    "...3% every quarter" can sound like 12% a year to new investors. Maybe try rewording like 3% annual dividend, paid out quarterly ;) Pleasure to watch otherwise and good luck with the channel!

    • @CanadianTShirt

    If it's possible, can you please tell what are the demerits of owning a US dividend or growth etf in the Canadian market? What kind of fees or taxes will it attract? How will the dividend be deposited in Canadian dollars? My understanding is that the US market is more exposed to a variety of industries and that its a good idea to invest in a mix of US and Canadian etfs.

    • @CanadianTShirt

      Perfect timing! I just released a video about the TFSA and the dangers of holding US dividend stocks in your TFSA so check this video out: th-cam.com/video/i_bWf1NyUbE/w-d-xo.html
      Essentially, if you hold a US dividend stock or a US ETF inside your TFSA, you WILL be charged a 15% US Withholding Tax on these US dividends, even in a TFSA. The TFSA is tax-free but ONLY for Canadian investments. The ONLY way to avoid paying a US Withholding tax on US dividends is to hold your US investments in an RRSP

    • @CanadianTShirt
      @CanadianTShirt  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Also you are totally right! The US market is over 10 times the size of the Canadian market with far greater diversification and varied industries so it is very important to invest in the US market. I will be releasing a video very soon on a step-by-step guide on how to buy US stocks in Canada using Questrade. I recommend Questrade for your US investments since you are allowed to hold US dollars in Questrade. Whereas something like WealthSimple Trade can ONLY hold Canadian dollars so you will be losing money with a currency conversion fee EVERY single time you receive a US dividend... I hope that helps and stay tuned for my upcoming video! =)

    • @humblehooligan
      @humblehooligan 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That video would be very helpful.. Thanks a tonne for your reply.. It's very useful.. I'm not very clear on the cross currency conversion and how it can be avoided in Questrade since I need to buy with USD, but pay with CAD and this will be subject to cross currency conversion anyways, if I'm not wrong..

    Any thoughts on VFV? It's an S&P 500 Index ETF but in Canadian dollars. I'm not entirely sure if the dividends will then also be in Canadian dollars as well. Kind of confusing

    • @Fendy54
      @Fendy54 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I believe the dividends are paid in USD and there will also be withholding tax (15%). Best to keep that in your RRSP to avoid that tax.

    • @seedymcfly5013
      @seedymcfly5013 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Canadian ETFs containing foreign stocks will be subject to a 15% tax only on your dividends. This applies to VFV, VGRO, VEQT, etc. Any ETF that contains any us or foreign stocks will be subject to this tax

    • @CanadianTShirt
      @CanadianTShirt  3 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      @@seedymcfly5013 So for maximum tax efficiency, you would save money holding VOO in your RRSP since you won't be paying any taxes. If you hold VFV in your TFSA, you WILL be charged those 15% US Withholding taxes on those dividends since VFV holds US companies. That being said, VFV barely pays a dividend at all, about 1.2% so a 15% tax on this tiny amount is almost negligible! The main benefit of VFV and VOO is the capital gains which ARE tax-free in a TFSA. It's really up to you... if it was an ETF with a higher yield above 3% then yes, I would definitely buy the US equivalent ETF and hold it in an RRSP to avoid this withholding tax. I hope that helps! =)

    I used your referral link and I am planning to invest my first three hundred dollars in an ETF. The VRE seems to be the route that interests me the most. I am 18 now, and when I was fifteen or so my grandmother brought me to Primerica to begin investing because her friend worked there. I invested in total around 600 in mutual funds, but in hindsight it was poor choice. Watching your videos made it clear to me that a TFSA is a better route, so thank you very much. I have now stopped contributing to the mutual fund, and I was wondering if I should withdraw the money from Primerica, or just let is sit.

    • @CanadianTShirt
      @CanadianTShirt  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Way to go buddy! I wish I had started investing when I was 18, you are way ahead of me brother! That depends, if you sell your mutual funds right now, will you make a profit? I would guess that your mutual funds are probably down right now these past 3 months so I would wait until the mutual funds recover their value, then sell them since you don't want to keep paying those expensive management fees and then invest that money into ETFs or dividend stocks in your TFSA =)

      That's what I love to hear!!! I'm so happy that my videos are binge-worthy! As long as you have a long-term investing horizon, meaning that you won't be touching this money until retirement, I suggest that you hold your US dividend stocks and ETFs in your RRSP to avoid the US withholding taxes and then hold your Canadian dividend stocks and ETFs in your TFSA. Once those are both maxed out, then it's time to invest in your margin account. I go into more detail in my TFSA and RRSP videos so make sure you check those out! =)

    Hey Adrian, thanks for answering my questions. I was curious though, you hold both XIC etfs as well as Enbridge stock, but XIC seems to have Enbridge as a holding, so I was wondering if there was any basis or advantage for having 2 of the same stock?

    • @CanadianTShirt
      @CanadianTShirt  4 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      Excellent question! You are correct, by investing in XIC I am investing in Enbridge along with 230 other companies. However, Enbridge only makes up 4.3% of XIC so if I really want to reap the benefits of investing in Enbridge, I get more of an advantage by investing in Enbridge stock directly. But I also get more of the risk, if Enbridge does poorly, my stock does poorly. But if the other 230 Canadian companies do well, my XIC ETF will do well even if Enbridge suffers. The main reason I invest with Enbridge is to take advantage of its large dividends, currently a 7% dividend yield. XIC's dividend contains this Enbridge dividend but it is diluted by the 230 other companies which don't pay as much of a dividend so XIC only has a dividend of about 3%. In summary, it is wise to invest in ETFs to obtain diversification but if there are particular companies you believe in, invest directly in those stocks as well to obtain the most growth. I hope that helps! =)

    Great video! How do you compare ETF's to index funds like the TD E-series?

    • @CanadianTShirt
      @CanadianTShirt  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Index funds are just cheaper Mutual Funds that track an index, which is exactly what an ETF does. Index funds are definitely cheaper than traditional, actively managed mutual funds but they're still more expensive than a comparable ETF

    • @CanadianTShirt
      @CanadianTShirt  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The average mutual fund has an MER between 2% and 3%, index funds have an MER between 0.6% and 1.5% and ETFs are usually between 0.05% and 0.8%. And they are usually made up of the exact same equities and in roughly the same proportion. Mutual funds and index funds just cost more because they have to pay for an "expert" to manage your fund

    • @CanadianTShirt
      @CanadianTShirt  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Let's look at a TD E-Series index fund like the TD Canadian Index Fund -e. This fund tracks the Canadian stock market, the same index that the XIC ETF tracks. And if you look at the holdings and industry breakdown of this e-series fund, it is very, very close to XIC. But XIC only charges an MER of 0.06% whereas the TD e-series charges 0.33%, over FIVE TIMES the fee!

    • @CanadianTShirt
      @CanadianTShirt  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      And this e-series index fund is the cheapest e-series fund that TD offers. All of the others have MERs above 1%. I would be fine paying this fee if I felt that I was getting measurable, value from it. But if you look at the breakdown of the fund, it's essentially the exact same as an ETF but far more expensive... I'll be making a whole video about why I avoid mutual funds and how much money ETFs can save you over your lifetime, so stay tuned for that. And thank you for that excellent question! =)

  • @GenZInvestor
    @GenZInvestor 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I had a question regarding foreign withholding tax on US dividends payed through a Canadian ETF. I understand that in a TFSA/RRSP the withholding tax is nonrecoverable, compared to a non-registered account where it is recoverable. I have no interest in currency conversion at this moment, and I have ample room in my TSFA/RRSP. I am in a 30% tax bracket, so my question is would it not be more tax efficient to hold VFV (tsx S&P 500 etf) in my TFSA and lose the 15% withholding tax, instead of holding in my non-registered where of course I could recover that 15% tax but it would be taxed at my full tax rate of 30% and be subject to capital gains tax when I sell

    • @CanadianTShirt
      @CanadianTShirt  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's an excellent question! I'm going to be making a video all about taxes on investment income, including withholding taxes very soon. It can be complicated but I'll try to address it in a short comment. Since you're in a 30% tax bracket, I'm going to assume that you have an income around $70,000. You're correct that you pay 30% tax on US and foreign dividends but you only pay half of that (15%) on capital gains, whether they are Canadian or US capital gains

    • @CanadianTShirt
      @CanadianTShirt  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      My general strategy is to reserve my TFSA and RRSP for high-yield dividend investments. If I hold purely Canadian dividends in my TFSA and purely US dividends (in USD) in my RRSP, I do not pay any taxes at all (until you eventually withdraw from the RRSP at retirement) That's because on dividend investments, you pay tax every single year so that really cuts down on your expected exponential growth. With capital gains however, you do not pay any taxes until you sell and I most of my growth stocks are things that I want to hold for decades. So for me, keeping a growth stock in a TFSA is a bit of a waste. Sure, I won't pay any tax on those capital gains I make 20 years later when I sell but during those 20 years, the TFSA hasn't given any benefit. But keeping dividend stocks in that TFSA gives me actual benefits every single year

    • @CanadianTShirt
      @CanadianTShirt  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      In the case of VFV, I would consider the goal of that ETF to be capital appreciation over dividend income, since most of its holdings are big tech companies and this ETF has a very small yield around 1.5%. In that case, keeping it in a TFSA or RRSP doesn't make full use of those accounts. I would keep it in a non-registered account where yes, you pay 30% on those very small dividends and you will pay 15% withholding tax, all of which should be recovered with the Foreign Tax Credit and when you finally sell VFV, you only pay 15% on the capital gains. Save that TFSA room for high yield Canadian ETFs and dividends and save that RRSP for high yield USD holdings

    • @CanadianTShirt
      @CanadianTShirt  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I'm curious why you have no interest in currency conversion? Currency conversion into USD is a one-time 2% fee, or only a $10 commission fee if you use Norbert's Gambit (I will make a whole video on this very soon) Even if you just convert to USD the easy way, I would rather pay a one-time 2% conversion fee and hold US dividends in my RRSP rather than pay a 15% withholding tax EVERY YEAR. Anyway, sorry for the long-winded answer, I hope that helps and thanks for the great question! =)

    Another very informative video! I'll have to look into VRE... appreciate the tip.
    I've also been looking at ZDV for a 4.38% dividend.
    Also.. In this current market, I've been thinking of Low Volatility ETF's like ZLB... would appreciate your thoughts.
    Thanks again for this great video.

    • @CanadianTShirt
      @CanadianTShirt  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ZDV looks very interesting. It seems to me like a mix between XIC and XEI. That 4.38% dividend yield is great and it's industry breakdown is very similar to that of XIC, other than low exposure to Materials. Also similar to XEI, all of its holdings are fairly evenly weighted. About half of ZDV's holdings have a weight between 2.5% and 3% which is nice. It doesn't have one stock dominating the weight the way that VDY does

    • @CanadianTShirt
      @CanadianTShirt  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Overall, ZDV looks like a really strong Canadian dividend ETF! My biggest complaint is that the MER is quite high with 0.39%. That's almost double the MER of XEI and ZDV has a lower yield. XEI's net income is 4.5% whereas ZDV's is only 4%. Still, this is definitely an ETF that I will keep an eye on. Thank you for the tip!

    • @CanadianTShirt
      @CanadianTShirt  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ZLB is definitely more conservative. My investments always have a long term time frame of 20+ years so I don't worry about short term volatility. I want high yield passive income or large growth potential, or both! ZLB definitely has consistent and steady growth but it's nothing too exciting. And in terms of income, it has a dividend yield of 2.4% but an MER of 0.39% so a net income of only 2%. That basically cancels out inflation

    • @CanadianTShirt
      @CanadianTShirt  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      So after inflation, you're basically not gaining any income, you're just relying on the small but reliable growth. This isn't the kind of ETF that I am looking for, in my long term horizons but if you're looking for something in a short time frame, less than two years, it looks like a pretty decent choice

    • @CanadianTShirt
      @CanadianTShirt  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Also, since it pays such low income and most of it's value is going to be in capital gains, I wouldn't keep it in your TFSA. I would keep it in your taxable account since you won't be paying very much taxes on this investment. I would rather reserve my TFSA room for HIGH YIELD dividend stocks and ETFs. I'll be making a whole video about what goes in my TFSA vs RRSP vs taxable accounts to minimize taxes so check that out! And sorry for the huge answer.... I got a little excited haha. But thank you for the excellent question! 😄

      Your TFSA should be reserved for Canadian investments. Once your TFSA is maxed out, these Canadian investments could also go into your RESP or RRSP to take advantage of the tax sheltered growth! Personally, I reserve most of my RRSP contribution room for US dividend stocks and ETFs (to avoid the US withholding tax) but I also hold Canadian stocks in my RRSP! This is because for most people, especially after years of working under their belt have far greater RRSP room than TFSA room. I hope that helps! =)

      Watching all the stock market videos, the credit card ones are also informative but I never paid interest on any of my cards ever. Drilled into me at a young age. If anyone carries a balance on their CC’s monthly. Watch those to learn how your getting milked by big companies. Forwarded a few videos to my buddies, hopefully they enjoy and subscribe! Keep up the great work.

    Adrian there is a bmo etf with ~7% yield that uses the covered call method. So its like collecting high compounding interest with little exposure to growth/depreciation of the market. I know you're one for dividend collection which is why i brought it up.
    P.S: 0.72 MER not sure if that breaks the deal. Still higher dividend and less exposure to risk than other etfs on the list.

      Hey Abdulla! Personally I avoid options trading entirely including covered calls. I understand the temptation especially with such high yields but options trading and covered calls are significantly riskier than pure stock and ETF ownership and I don't recommend them especially for beginners! But if you want to experiment with them and if you're okay with that risk, then go for it! It just doesn't fit with my personal strategy =)

    Recently, I’ve been buying DFN and DIV. They aren’t ETF’s but they are currently high yield dividend stocks that pay a consistent dividend. When I looked at the history, they have seldom ever missed a dividend and seldom raise or decrease it, regardless of the price. I’m buying them up as quick as I can because the yield will go down when they go up in value, but if I can build a sizeable position before then, I’ll be better off than those buying in later when the price goes up and the dividend stays the same. I know a lot of investors look for something where they see the dividend increase; but I see potential in these shares that aren’t necessarily growing the dividend, but remain consistent through both low and high share prices so long as you buy them while they’re cheap.

      The only period where dividends were suspended that I noticed with these stocks is during the 2020 pandemic, when most companies had stopped or cut their dividend anyway.

Just be cautious, don't invest with serious money that you are counting on. When doing speculative, riskier investments only play with money you won't be needing =)

      Question! Do I have this correct: In a RESP you recommend Canadian investments and no US Investments because of the withholding tax on US capital gains? Unless you investing in an RRSP.
      So would you recommend purchasing all of these ETFs in equal proportions in a RESP? Also what about BONDS as the RESP comes closer to the time the beneficiary may pursue higher education. Thanks! Learning lots!
