      @@smileyface112 I answered your same question in another comment below but basically, you just invest with whatever amount of cash you have available. If you have $1000, invest with $1000. The # of shares only really matter when you are trying to calculate how much you need to qualify for a DRIP. Check out my DRIP Explained video to see that calculation =)

    Apples are the one fruit that do not grow from seed. Orchards are built from grafting root stock. Apple seeds are not variety based genetically, they contain all apple genetics. Only an bitter crabapple tree can grow from an apple seed.. aside from that analogy..loved the video! Lol

    • @CanadianTShirt
      @CanadianTShirt  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I usually don't care about the # of shares, it's more how much money I have. If I have $1000 to invest, I simply divide $1000 by the share price to determine # of shares. However, if my plan is to setup a DRIP, then I perform a calculation to see how many shares I need to buy to qualify for a DRIP. Check out my DRIP Explained video where I go over this calculation =)

    Adrian you have the best and easiest learning tool for beginners. Thank you for sharing such important information. What would you tell a person who has $140,000.00 that needs to be invested for income. This person has zero dollars in their TFSA and is 60 yrs young. Help!

    • @CanadianTShirt
      @CanadianTShirt  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Thank you so much for those kind words! And wow! That is a great problem to have!! 😆
      First thing for sure would be to max out your TFSA. If you have never opened a TFSA you will have $69,500 of room right now, with another $6,000 coming in 2021. Check out my stock pick videos to see what stocks and ETFs you should put in your TFSA, mainly Canadian dividend assets =)
      th-cam.com/play/PLj8bU3AuW2qFD4sCsCxXdaAADlyiP8bqB.html
      Now you have $70K left, decide how much you should put into a savings account for emergencies and daily spending. I recommend a high interest savings account with EQ Bank or Alterna Bank or Motive Financial, they all offer about 2% interest rate on savings.
      Whatever is left over, will have to be invested in your margin account. You will have to pay taxes on all capital gains and dividends in your margin account that's why it's important to max out your TFSA first. In your situation, an RRSP isn't super useful since you will have to close your RRSP when you turn 71 and you will be taxed on those withdrawals....
      This is a huge question and impossible to answer in a small comment but I hope this was able to help somewhat =)

    ok everyone says put your emergency money or house money in a savings account at modest 2%. But where is this 2%????? Scotiabank pays like 0.05% and like on a savings accelerator promotion, it's like 1.5% ON PROMOTION.. regular rate is 0.30%. So where is this 2%? Which of the big 5 canadian bank offers this? The only bank i hear about is EQ which is an online bank. Is that your suggestion for the 2%?
    Anyways, thanks a lot for your videos. I think i'm commenting for the first time. But i've been binging on your videos since i discovered your channel. I've started investing on Questrade. I find you to be the most sensible from all the Canadian investment gurus here on TH-cam.

    • @CanadianTShirt

      This video was made before the market crash... back then there were dozens of banks offering interest rates around 2.5%....
      Unfortunately, since the crash the federal government slashed interest rates to all time lows.... The big banks will always offer the worst interest rates, instead look for the smaller digital banks. They offer better rates to compete with the big banks!
      Right now the best high interest savings account is EQ Bank which currently offers 1.5%. Feel free to use my referral link below if you want to open an account =)

      Another option is to shop around for promotional rates! Right now Tangerine is offering a promotional rate of 2% but only until the end of March.... after that promotion runs out, I'll move my savings back to EQ to get that 1.5%
      I hope that helps! =)

However, if you want a purely hands-off approach where you can just put money in and let them invest on your behalf, Questwealth or WealthSimple roboinvesting is a GREAT option and it will be MUCH cheaper than most Mutual Funds at the banks which also advertise the hands-off benefits. Hey I l;oe your video series and I think they will be great but I just had a question/something I wanted to clarify. Like from the segment around 3:15 , you advise long term investing and for the retirement which I totally agree but what if you are someone who already has a job with a decent retiremnt pension and my goal is more to, increase my yearly gains I guess you could say without having to do a second job. Like I still want to invest long term, but not towards retirement you know. More for fun projects and stuff that usually make you loose money (cars etc.). I still feel like growing my wealth and following your videos will lead me to there but do you have a different take for people who's goal is like that or you would say to still keep doing the same and I guess what would be different is taking money more often from your investments compared to someone who's goal is for retirement? For context just hit 24 here have a decent government job at around 70k a year.

    Love this channel, hate the ads though. For anyone who is wondering: any of those ads you see about amazon fda, day-to-day investing, etc.. don't sign up, it's not free, it asks for your credit card, it's a scam. I used my email to get past the first step.. asked for everything about you after that.

    • @CanadianTShirt
      @CanadianTShirt  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Unfortunately I have NO CONTROL over what ads show up in front of my videos... that's all handled by TH-cam and it is based on your search history etc... • @CanadianTShirt
      @CanadianTShirt  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes it would be nice to have a bit of a capital gain BUT investing in the short term is VERY RISKY!!! One year from now, you might make a profit but you are just as likely to LOSE money! Investing in the stock market is historically guaranteed to be profitable in the long term, 10+ years but one year from now, we have no idea if the stock market will be up or down... If you NEED that money to buy a house one year from now, do NOT risk that money in the stock market. Instead, hold it in a high interest savings account so that the money is 100% safe and you can earn some small interest as well!
      My favourite High Interest Savings Account in Canada right now is with EQ Bank, they offer 1.7% interest rate and no monthly fees! Use the link below!

    Good video, however its misleading to say money doesn't lose value when put in a savings account. If inflation is higher than the interest you get then by definition your money is losing value.

    • @CanadianTShirt
      @CanadianTShirt  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're absolutely right! A savings account ONLY protects you from inflation if the interest is higher, inflation is usually around 2% per year. Most of the online banks I mentioned (AlternaBank, EQ Bank, WealthSimple Cash and LBC Digital) offer savings accounts above 2.2%. Hopefully if inflation rises, these online banks would try to increase rates to keep up, but the big banks are always going to offer very low interest rates, well below inflation (around 1%)

    • @CanadianTShirt
      @CanadianTShirt  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CrispyAssasin_-td3rr ideally during retirement! The longer you hold your investments, the more they can grow and the longer you can take advantage of exponential growth! But again, you always have total control over your money. If you NEED this money to buy a house, you can sell your stocks and cash out! But I urge you to try to keep your investments untouched for years and years, that's how long term wealth is built! =)

    • @CanadianTShirt
      @CanadianTShirt  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I will be making a whole video on how the Margin account works! Basically, it allows you the CHOICE to borrow money and invest with these borrowed funds but you will have to pay interest on this loan. I do NOT recommend investing with borrowed money, it's not worth the risk! You should ONLY be investing with your own money! The good news is that if you only invest with the cash you have in your Margin account, that is only your money and so you won't be borrowing anything, it will be identical to any other cash account at another broker =)

    • @CanadianTShirt

      Or do you mean, why doe these huge companies still sell shares on the stock market? Once a company goes public, it's hard to go back and become private again. Unless one person would be able to buy the majority of the shares but that would take tens of billions of dollars!
