I knew someone who crewed for Alan Kulwicki in his ASA days. We became a good friends and he always spilled the beans. I think that is why he stayed sane. Alan was was driven by success and at times was tough to work for. He wanted everything his way or the highway. He was very conceited in those days but when he moved to cup he got humbled very quickly. He was very intelligent and had an engineering degree. He understood everything about the car, and was also a great driver. His team was run on a shoestring in the early years, often wondering how he was going to pay for everything. Sometimes his mood wasn't great because of the lack of funds. At the same time, if he won he would give the guys a bonus, or take them out for dinner. Unfortunately my friend got crushed between the two 18 wheelers at the side of the road, while trying to break up a fight between the two drivers and died on the spot. RIP Jack. I don't fault Bill Ingles opinion, but there is two sides to every story. Most such as Paul Andrews was loyal to Alan and still chokes up when talking about him.
Absolutely. Nobody's perfect. We all have our moments. The fact that he won a championship doing it his way while spurning top rides will NEVER be duplicated. But, if he did say that to Bill, that is totally uncalled for. When Bill told him it was just a job. Amen.
I think Bill said that, and knew that. He was telling the other side. He never faulted AK's abilities. He faulted his ethics behind money. When he didn't have any, he was humble. When he did have money, he was conceited. Bill wasn't going to work for two people in the same body. You should be who you are, always. I think that's the point he was driving. I don't think he meant any ill will, he just didn't like AK's stance on things. Sorry about your buddy Brother!
Even Alan admitted that he was hard to work for. He held himself to such high standards and sometimes forgot that he couldn’t hold others to those same standards.
In Alan's defense, drinking and partying can affect your personality. I had a drinking problem for a long time, and I'm usually a nice guy even when I drank. Sometimes though, it can cause even the nicest people to be a prick.
It was Alan's drive to be successful with a quarter of the resources the rest had. Hooters finally funded the team sufficiently to build more cars and have better engines. The fans loved him because he was the underdog and won a championship.
Thats all well and good... except kulwicki was one of the hardest working people in racing... ingle saying alan was out drinkin ect... full of shit is the nice way to put it...
I've read a few articles that said Kulwicki and Evernham got into a heated argument and had to be pulled apart before they started swinging. Ray quit and started taking his stuff to his car to head back home. Gordon heard what was happening and talked him into working with him and BDR the rest of Speedweeks. From that day on they were a package deal.
I heard bad things about Senior as a youngster. His dirty driving from a semi famous dirt driver thar my Dad knew. But Senior was a real puzzle. He would take liberties with other drivers lives, but at the same time having a small town churches parking lot paved and so on. Those are personality traits of people that make race car drivers and fighter pilots, etc.
In the mid 90's, I worked for a VERY old school shop (on Old Concord road) that had some very big names come through it including Alan... and I heard some stories about Alan... I'm going to side with Bill...
A lot of people making comments that has never been around the Cup back in the day. Lots of things things happened and lots of stories to tell. Some good, some funny and some, not so good.

@@J.P.207 he joined Hass and got 50% ownership for no dollar commitment I did not include him because he was already a champion he didn't start out as an owner driver he did after having a ton of money
There's story telling and then there's too much detail. This is too much detail. True or not, it just ends up being a soundbite nugget for the Internet to judge. All Bill had to say was that Alan told him he expected the team to come first before everything else. Alan was difficult, would scream, was demanding, etc...ok. That doesn't necessarily mean that the one on one conversation went down that day exactly as Bill says it did. It's a telling sign when the storyteller's story places so much emphasis on what the other guy said over and over. The gaps in the stories are the things in-between that Bill said and did to prompt those responses.
After you listen to enough of the interviews becomes obvious that most of these guys are VERY proud of their ability. Not so much of anyone else. I remember the boxer that said. "Marciano couldn't carry my jockstrap". Lost everyone's respect on the spot. But popular opinion seems to be, men are SUPPOSED to be arrogant assholes.

Kulwicki didn't owe Bill or anybody else an explanation of his actions. That was a cheap shot at a dead man. I thought Bill Ingle was better than that.

That’s a lot of BS flung in under 10 minutes. When the guy has to tell you just how important he was, he usually wasn’t.

I about fell out the chair laughing. "Hey Ray, where's your AK shirt..hhhmmm".

Kulwicki the last owner champion

I have always heard Alan was a very religious guy. I have a very hard time believing he told someone he needed to put him before god.
Please get a clue
Get a clue about why
do you people treat the deceased

Wow :(
@StanleyCarr17 Ingle has always been delusional and full of himself. What a load of you know what
