When I first started I really over water my plants and I have so many plants that I sometimes underwater so resolution to overwatering is getting more plants
haha, water is seldom the problem, poor soil is. if your soil chokes your roots then the roots rot and there goes your plant. As long as you keep your soil changed water away.
@@SimranMurar that was kind of general, lol. its best to know your plant and its individual needs, but a lot of plants can be grown in just water, and if they can then its your soil is too broken down. Nick uses a lot of perlite which I don't really recommend because it can make your soil dry out too fast, a healthy mix of natural stuff is always good though, from orchid bark to tree fern to sphagnum, there are lots of ways to get healthier soils. If you have a botanical garden around there are usually people that answer community calls. In the vivarium world there is a mix called "ABG" (Atlanta Botanical Garden) that is a great substrate for terrariums, vivariums, etc. I think it was created for pitcher plants, but its good for most plants. Josh's Frogs sells it if you don' want to mix it yourself.

My current mix is roughly 30/30/30 regular potting mix/perlite/mini pine nuggets and 10% worm castings. The soil dries out a little faster than it might in a different mix, but I have to try to dummy-proof this stuff for myself because I'm a heavy-handed waterer, lol.

I’m a recent subscriber, so this just got recommended to me on my feed. This was the video that I needed, because I’m definitely a helicopter protective mom from my kids to my pets and now my plants 😂. Guilty as charged. I’m definitely fighting the urge to purge my plants with water. Now I know which can stand my overkill “caretaking” 👍

I recommend birdsnest fern! It can go without water for a week and you'll see the leaves getting droopy and get lighter in color when it needs water, but it will NOT die on you! Just bottomwater it and it will be good as new! I have 3 because they are so easy! Hope this encouraged someone to try!

I have a Homalomena rubescens ‘Maggie’ in a 45 cm (+/- 17”) pot that I water close to a quarter of a gallon every 2-3 days. When I underwater the leaves come out damaged because they have a hard time to unfurl. Repotted this beast 3 times in one year. Happy growing to all!
I think i might finally be balancing my overcare vs. neglect. Like I used to overwater my plants (drowned several), then I underwatered and now I think I found some balance in it. Except when the seasons change. It's hard to remember it's winter sometimes and plants need less water then. And in the beginning of summer it's hard to gauge how much more water they need at first. So yay, I'm learning!
Your plants look awesome as ever! Hoya 'Mathilde' is pronounced differently though ("Mah-Tild" or "Mah-Til-Dah"). It's named for the now queen of Belgium, back when she was a princess. She doesn't mind either of those two pronunciations.
I super recommend getting a sundew, it's a carnivorous plant that will eat anything from tiny to medium sized. Looks super cute with its dew drops and flowers several times a year for me!! They're bog plants so you can literally let them stand in an inch of water at all times without getting rot. Maybe you'll get a few fungus gnats but they'll just eat them lol (they do need distiled water otherwise their roots will die at some point)
I used to water my maidenhair fern every single day until I put it in a wicking system. Those nursery pots from Lowe’s that have the wick attacked may kill everything else eventually but ferns thrive in them lol
out of SOME reason a maiden hair fern has taken root in and is now growing inside my mom's orchid pot. We don't know how it got there but it seems to be doing really well lol
I feel like baby’s tears (soleirolia soleirolii) is very underrated as well! Its pretty cute and also on the thirsty side. I water mine either a little bit daily or a decent amount every 2-3 days. I just have it in the nursery pot, sitting in a plant tray/underpot. I only bottom water mine because it is so dense - you really can't see the pot and the tray is almost invisible as well. It has grown a lot, and it's very easy! It likes to stay moist but it doesn't die if you forget it for some days. They also don't mind if you must them, but it really isn't required. I once went away for a long weekend and gave it a lot of water so it could survive. I then panicked that I had over watered it, so came back the next day and it had sucked it all up...

I tend to swing between two extremes ie over ans under watering. I used to over water all the time, so after killing my plants with love I've learned over time......still it's always a challenge for me! I have a prayer plant out on my balcony that I almost killed with neglect, but after repotting it and watering it more often it's looking fabulous.
i had a fern a few years ago and i left it with my grandmother for two weeks and it was literally just dust when i got back. she felt really bad and bought me a new one and i have learned to never leave it alone lmao.
I had a stowaway on a recently purchased callisia repens bianca plant . Was going to pull it out and toss it but now I know it's a baby plectranthus Ernstii. So glad you talked about it! You literally just saved its life! And now I know how to take care of it.
Hi Nick! This was another fun video! I always enjoy your facial expressions and sense of humor. I really like your descriptions on these plants, especially the fern, "trash plant". I have 2 Kangaroo Paw Ferns and a Rabbits Foot Fern. So far they are doing pretty good. They do need more water than most of my other plants. My purple waffle, dragon's blood and fittonia need more water, too. I've had good luck with Peace Lily's, so would like to find a Homalomena "Emerald Gem". I'd like to find a Ctenanthe burle-marxii and Episcia cupreata, too. Thank you so much for sharing!

Yes...I tend to overwater my plants. I've killed a few, but now I water every other week....some once a month. I can't keep a fern, especially a Maidenhead fern alive...despite my watering it daily. It always crisps up. I enjoyed the video...thanks Nick!
For me the most obvious ones would be carnivorous plants. I know most of them need A LOT of water, but I can only really speak for some Nepenthes Hybrids I have owned. As long as you keep them moist and in fairly bright light they are easy aswell. (Bright window, some sun-hour but not too long) Never use fertilizer and you should be fine...
Hi Nick! Just get a ZERO WATER FILTER THE 30 CUP PITCHER like I did. And you, your pets and the plants can drink and live off of FILTERED WATER. It's sustainable and not very expensive at all. Buying water just was not sustainable for me and living things in my home. We, above creatures I mentioned are so happy. No brown edges on plants, water tastes good, uuumm, and Ittamar my cat is happy too, drinks water more often I've noticed and I do too. Blessings young Man.
I take a bottle of water to bed at night also and the next morning I water one of my plants with it. I have indoor and outdoor plants so I can usually find one that needs a drink. I enjoy your videos, thanks for sharing. I live in Houston where outside plants need the water. The humidity helps my houseplants thrive. I summer most of them on my NW facing covered patio.🍃🌱

Swedish Ivy is the only plant I have that I hate. I let my water rooting cuttings dry out. I planted it in the crappiest leftover soil i had and then didnt water that. 2 weeks later i finally felt bad and watered it. Havent touched it since, and here we are a month later and its still thriving 🙄
I have a 75 gallon fish tank in my bed room. Part of the reason I got in to plants is so I could use some of the fish water instead of having to haul it all outside. The water hungry the plant the better!
I don't have any experience with the plants in the latter part of the video, but those first few? Absolutely! I have a rabbit tracks maranta and a ctenanthe grey star, and I thought I was going crazy when I realized I was having to water them every couple days or so. They're so thirsty! Not as much as that damn fern, though. That fern is the bane of my existence. lol
I have a homalomena 'emerald gem' and it's about 4 ft wide and 3 foot tall at this point (no one told me they get this big when I got it) and the damn thing takes 1 litre of water every watering - and it still gets droopy less than a week later. It drinks like it's not been watered in months. I only give it rain water. Still, would recommend, I sort of love it.

Because I had never thought about it until you mentioned keeping your plant in a pot without drainage hole so it stays moist longer, that maybe the easiest way to keep a Maidenhair fern alive too?? My Plectranthus is a tomentosa aka the Vicks plant. It has a really nice, compact shape with chubsy wubsy leaves. It's pretty good about water; it takes rainforest or desert. I almost gave it away this week, but it's so darn cute, I decided to keep it. I have one Epsicia and I love it more than it loves me. It's become really stretched and ugly and I don't know what to do about it. It has the most wonderful hot pink flowers, when it's feeling better about life. It's the only one I've ever seen in person and I want it to be compact and cute again. I'm an underwaterer, as a cactus person, and my ferns thank you for reminding me to water them. I had no idea they had to be watered daily. Oops. My Boston waits for rain then goes outside to have the time of her life, but she had to settle for the sink tonight.
I have those exact marantaceaes and after my leuconeura was super happy she's just drying so I am really happy to hear she might come back XD. I've been searching for a maidenhair everywhere I really think we'll get along.
@@woofinka839 It looks like just the bottom leaves are dying off, which is typical for this plant because it vines like a cancer. I have 4 tetra's, I keep cutting mine to make them a hanging plant, so far so good, wish I could post a picture. I am rooting the cuttings in Lecca pebbles so I can sell them at a yard sale that I will be having, or give to my grand daughter.
I cannot remember to water plants more than 1-3 times a month. So far only my orchids and christmas cactus survive. I have a humidifier so my home stays at 50% humidity and the plants I do have seem very happy. They sit in my kitchen window.
Ernstii is super Hardy, super easy to make New plants of it. I got like 20 of Them out of 2 plants. Hardy down to 10c. I got it in a green house atm, flowering super beautiful and yes water water water heh.
My roommate almost drowned my ctenathe „burle-marxii“ (¿not sure it‘s written correctly?) 😂 fortunately I got back from Italy just in time to save her 🤞🏻

Ferns have spores. The tiniest leaf or a spore will grow in any soil. It used to piss off my mom.
I'm more hands off but I wanted to get my son his own plant and let's be honest he is gonna want to water it daily so this is a great video
I highly recommend putting rocks/gravel on top of the soil for plants that need to be watered a lot so the soil will stay moist much longer.

My ferns are all miniature and kept in closed terrariums for humidity, but I might try it now in a pot! Loooooove your videos so much 🥰

Swedish Ivy is the only plant I have that I hate. I let my water rooting cuttings dry out. I planted it in the crappiest leftover soil i had and then didnt water that. 2 weeks later i finally felt bad and watered it. Havent touched it since, and here we are a month later and its still thriving 🙄
Anthuriums loooovveeessss water. I water them every other day. then again, their soil is all chunky coconut husk - excellent drainage.

I have a 75 gallon fish tank in my bed room. Part of the reason I got in to plants is so I could use some of the fish water instead of having to haul it all outside. The water hungry the plant the better!
That Episcia guy would look real cool in my house riiiiiiiight next to the zz raven that gets watered with paying my rent. Best friends 😂😂😂

I don't have any experience with the plants in the latter part of the video, but those first few? Absolutely! I have a rabbit tracks maranta and a ctenanthe grey star, and I thought I was going crazy when I realized I was having to water them every couple days or so. They're so thirsty!
Not as much as that damn fern, though. That fern is the bane of my existence. lol

I have a homalomena 'emerald gem' and it's about 4 ft wide and 3 foot tall at this point (no one told me they get this big when I got it) and the damn thing takes 1 litre of water every watering - and it still gets droopy less than a week later. It drinks like it's not been watered in months. I only give it rain water. Still, would recommend, I sort of love it.

Because I had never thought about it until you mentioned keeping your plant in a pot without drainage hole so it stays moist longer, that maybe the easiest way to keep a Maidenhair fern alive too?? I am going to try one more time growing it that way!!! Thanks for the idea!!! 😀
My Plectranthus is a tomentosa aka the Vicks plant. It has a really nice, compact shape with chubsy wubsy leaves. It's pretty good about water; it takes rainforest or desert. I almost gave it away this week, but it's so darn cute, I decided to keep it. I have one Epsicia and I love it more than it loves me. It's become really stretched and ugly and I don't know what to do about it. It has the most wonderful hot pink flowers, when it's feeling better about life. It's the only one I've ever seen in person and I want it to be compact and cute again. I'm an underwaterer, as a cactus person, and my ferns thank you for reminding me to water them. I had no idea they had to be watered daily. Oops. My Boston waits for rain then goes outside to have the time of her life, but she had to settle for the sink tonight.
I just got two episcias and I love them!!!! I have two different varieties and they are both so silvery!

I have those exact marantaceaes and after my leuconeura was super happy she's just drying so I am really happy to hear she might come back XD. I've been searching for a maidenhair everywhere I really think we'll get along.

@@woofinka839 It looks like just the bottom leaves are dying off, which is typical for this plant because it vines like a cancer. I have 4 tetra's, I keep cutting mine to make them a hanging plant, so far so good, wish I could post a picture. I am rooting the cuttings in Lecca pebbles so I can sell them at a yard sale that I will be having, or give to my grand daughter.

I cannot remember to water plants more than 1-3 times a month. So far only my orchids and christmas cactus survive. I have a humidifier so my home stays at 50% humidity and the plants I do have seem very happy. They sit in my kitchen window.
Ernstii is super Hardy, super easy to make New plants of it. I got like 20 of Them out of 2 plants. Hardy down to 10c. I got it in a green house atm, flowering super beautiful and yes water water water heh.
