This might seem too basic but it isn't. Nowhere does anyone actually physically demonstrate watering houseplants. So a huge thank you for doing this Summer. It's very helpful and the visual makes it so much easier to understand.

I can't say enough how much I love the more scientific approach you give in all of your videos. I have such a hard time when I'm looking up care tips for a new type of plant and videos come up with suggestions like "I've never fertilized this plant and I don't really know how much light it gets but it does great in this area of my house!"
I feel no shame that I just watched 30 minutes about plant watering! I learned stuff and I've been keeping plants for years!

@@salpon hello! I'm not trying to create any confrontation at all, but I did want to mention that Summer did study ecology and entomology at Cornell so I would be inclined to believe that she's a bit scientifically minded.

You probably already know this, but to be safe, I'll mention it. Solely drinking distilled water for long periods of time can eventually can lead health disorders due to mineral leaching through osmosis. Harder/mineral water is better for one's health and for me, tastes better :P. In any case, great information and clear presentation - as always :)

Oversized pots can also be a problem. There aren't enough roots to soak up the extra moisture, so the soil doesn't dry out.

oh my goodness! Thank you so much for this tip, I keep on wondering why small plants must be on a small pots while they could jst plant it in a bigger pots right away, to skip the hassle of repotting. 😂😂😂 Now know why 😆

    • @jerrywhidby.
      @jerrywhidby. 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

@@agegraciously6926 you're welcome. It is also bad to put rocks in the bottom of your pots. Gravity will only pish so much water out of the soil. The very bottom of the soil will stay wet. You move that water line up when you add rocks. This can cause root rot, because your plant is sitting in water.

I have a lot of spider plants with brown, dry tips. I always wondered why they have them, because I water enough and spray them regularly. Now I learned that it may actually be my water that's the problem! We have pretty hard water with a lot of minerals in it. So this may be the reason they have those dry tips, from too much minerals?

Hey Summer! I LOVE your videos. Wish I found these years ago, because I killed a lot of plants learning the hard way, LOL. I have a watering tip I thought I would share! I have 44 houseplants at the moment and I have had as many as 70 I think. I always water my plants in the kitchen sink so I can be sure to water all of the surface area in the pots, and then I can let the water completely drain out before returning it back to its home in the house. I also place a large towel on the counter next to the sink where I place the pots after watering to catch any remaining water drops left in the pot. Sometimes it takes me an hour to do water all of them, but they all stay nice and hydrated, and it is very rare now that I have a plant die on me now! I hope that helps anyone who is concerned with under or over-watering their plants :)

ive never had any luck with water meters, if i touch the soil and its cool, then its moist, if its room temp then its dry or if dirt sticks to your finger usually its moist and if none or very little sticks to my finger its dry, but of course it depends on how much water your plant needs, not many but some do actually want to have a toe in water all the time (like venus fly traps)

Some plants like fittonias are very visually demanding plants. They will let you know when to water it as soon as the leaves curl, wrinkle, or sag. Another way is to stick your finger in the soil. You will definitely know when its dry. Think of it like cereal.

might be a silly question but is there a lot of ammonia in the water then from the fish poo? And if so, do plants like that?

    • @24gr87

@@richardtaylor3471 in some country they grow veggie in the lake, its help control amonia level for the fish to live. Some people called this aquaponic

@@richardtaylor3471: It depends on the fish you keep. Goldfish for example are messy and need more water changes than fish such as paradise fish. If you are concerned about the amount of ammonia build up in your tank water, keep an eye on it by using an ammonia indicator. Once the indicator changes ever so slightly, do a water change and use that for watering plants. Very slight ammonia levels won't harm your plants.

@@richardtaylor3471 Aquariums should not have much if any ammonia which is harmful to fish. The filter should turn it into nitrates.

With succulents, especially in winter, I do not recommend waterin throughoutly because they will start rotting. If you have a lot of warm sun exposure you can, but if you dont have very bright days or just not that much sun exsposurex I give mine a teaspoon to a tablespoon a week, when its warmer, more often.

I have 7 hanging plants. It’s impossible to remove the saucers from them to dump the excess water off, so I use a turkey baster to remove it.

I live and work in Riyadh and have some sun-loving plants on my window sill but the soil can become over-dry in between watering so that when it is time to water it runs right through and the soil doesn't have the ability to soak or retain. I try to counter this by using a watering can with fine rose (very small holes) and I also make a mental note of how heavy my pots feel if the soil retains water (and how light they feel when in need of water). LOVE your videos by the way! Love, love, love them! Thank you oh ye plant whisperer xxx

This series could not have come at a better time. My fiancee and I have recently been bitten by the plant bug and we've been buying plants like crazy. I don't have the best track record with keeping plants alive and this is helping me learn why! Thank you for explaining things in a way that's easy to understand and telling us why something is good or bad instead of just saying "do this, don't do that", it really helps narrow down the best ways to take care of all our new plant babies. :)

That's either a christmas or thanksgiving cactus. My guess is that this one is a thanksgiving cactus (a schlumbergera truncata).

Brilliant video and so informative. I now understand the why between top and bottom watering. Ps my very first houseplants I planted straight into the decorative pots.Summer time I was fine managing water, winter came and oh my, almost lost my string of pearls. Lucky for me they were mostly pottery pots and my husband drilled a hole at the bottom. Only one pot cracked and I repotted it.

Thanks for the information. I’ve started collecting rain water to water my plants because I was a bit hesitant to give them tap. My plants all love them. My hubby also told me that starch water is great for plants too. I’ve given it a try on a few and haven’t had any adverse effects.
