    I was born and raised in Cebu and its so odd to see Cebu blue with the juvenile leaves that I actually didn’t recognize them at first. They climb on trees back home and the leaves are so big and fenestrated.

    I looove aglaonema. They look like a piece of art. The funny thing ist, mine is placed in one of my darkest corners. All of the other plants I had there before, acted like they were ready to die. My aglaonema instead shoots out more leafs there than it did when I had it in bright light.

    • @preceptgal
      @preceptgal 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Is it mostly green without the pinks and other colors in it? They require less light (because more green = more chlorophyll??)
      Isn’t it nice to have such a showy plant further back in the house 🙂?

    • @TheConfusedhero
      @TheConfusedhero 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@preceptgal I own a relatively common aglaonema 'maria' wich has dark green foliage with spots of very light, almost greyish tint.. So your assumption about the more colourful varitions probably being less dark tolerant could be true?! I adore it and it is so low maintenance.

      What am I doing wrong? I have the same one as Nick, and I've had it over a year. When I bought it, it was a full beautiful pot. Now it's down to maybe one stalk. I do not overwater because I have a moisture meter, but suddenly one whole stalk will just turn yellow and die. It's like death by inches. It is just breaking my heart, but it is one of the hardest plants I have ever grown. No matter where I have it in my house, it is not happy. I'm so tempted to just throw it away now, but I keep thinking maybe I'll hit the right combination of light and water and it will start to grow again. Even though I know that's not going to happen!

      My grandmother had a beautiful Hoya plant (one of the white ones) that she loved. It took up residence in the fence and covered most of it. My grandfather hated it because he liked sitting in the patio to relax and look at the cars and people walking by and the plant was obstructing his view... so he snipped it, hoping she wouldn't notice, so it would die. It did... but she figured out what had happened and wanted to strangle him. HUGE fight! 😂

My fav is the Chocolate one. Hirts have the 6 inch for under $30. That was my first Hoya as well and also my fav Hoya. It grows like a bitch. I keep all mine in my green house in my apartment. The colorful Aglaonemas are my new favorites! I have a favonian, a siam aurora, and the pictum tricolor, and I have to admit that each of them bring a dramatic change to the corners they're placed in. My next aglaonemas I'm excited to buy are the blush and the lady valentine (maybe the lotus if the price on them ever drops).

    I'm in Australia and have several different varieties of Hoya (including a Pubicalyx) and each has its own growth pattern! They're endlessly interesting with flower shapes, leaf variety and the attitude of each plant. An amazingly diverse plant species that I am very hit and miss on growing but I continue to learn about them as I would love to grow a good size collection eventually.

    My Hoya didn't do anything for a year. And I have a whole bunch of them. Then I read that someone in my area, Houston, put hers outside in the summer, so I put mine outside but in the shade of course. Those little suckers took off! My Bella probably tripled in size. That was the biggest grower but they all took off and grew like crazy. I took them in a few weeks ago because it was supposed to freeze, but as soon as it warms up again, I'm putting them back outside. I miss having them in the house but they are so much happier outside, even in the hottest summer.

    I have a Cebu Blue and LOVE it! I got mine at Walmart last year. I had it just inside my front door and it ended up not being very happy there. I moved it onto my front porch for the warm weather and it enjoyed it there. I was worried about bringing it back inside for the Winter but I put it on top of a cabinet in my master bedroom where it doesn't get any direct light and it is doing very well, so well that I'm going to leave it there. It's gotten huge and trails down at least 4 feet. I also have one small plant I propagated from it and plan on taking a few more cuttings.

      Also for context, I have a tradescantia zebrina, tradescantia nanouk, tradescantia spathacea and tradescantia pallida. :)
      Also I have an aglaonema "sparkling Sarah" which looks similar to Nick's aglaonema "red emerald" and I can vouch, they are beautiful and easy to care for. :)

    I will say, as a person who was skeptical of neon colored plants, I am in love with them now . I had only seen neon pothos in videos or online . And then I found a local store that sells them so I went to check them out. So, I got a neon pothos. I saw it and I immediately fell in love NOW, I can't get enough neon colored plants . I highly recommend picking one up or going to see one in person . Before it had only had dark colored plants and so adding the neon gives (in my opinion) my collection a little more diversity and definitely breaks up the color scheme and makes EVERYTHING stand out a little bit more. It makes it easier on the eyes if you ask me .

    Hi Nick! That's a nice collection to show. I have one Aglaonema that I've had for quite a few years and it really hasn't done much. I bought one a few months ago, but the leaves are turning yellow, one by one. I don't know why. I'd love to find one with pink on the leaves. I think I have the Hoya pubicalyx. I've had it a long time, but for some reason it's been struggling for a while. I haven't changed the way I care for it, but it seems to be slowly dying back. It may just need to be repotted, but I may have to "chop and prop" it to save it. I love my Cebu Blue! Thank you so much for sharing! BTW, you can ramble as much as you want. I always enjoy your videos and your personality!

    I have the worst luck with Agleonemas...and Peperomia. They really do like to be left alone and forgotten about, in my care. And while I Love the few Hoya I have, the can take FOREVER to do anything, it seems like...except for my Obovata maybe...its not leaping but it's not sleeping either...and my Queen is finally pushing new leaves after 2 yrs. I've got them all squeezed into small, terra-cotta pots in the hopes they might thrive under a tighter fit.

      I completely agree. I bought a small one online for way too much. Then, naturally, I found a rack of full baskets at a big box store. So, of course I bought one and gave the small one to my daughter. That basket has grown and grown!! I cut it back for the second time yesterday. I rooted my cuttings the last time I trimmed it. But I don't need another so yesterday's trimmings went to waste. So, if these grow so easily and rapidly and propagate readily, why are they so expensive online??

    I agree with you Nick about Calatheas 1:40 - I managed to seemingly kill a beautiful purple one with orange flowers that I bought in memory of my late mother's birthday last summer. I don't know what I did wrong, possibly not a humid enough environment. So when the last leaves were clearly about to die, I cut it all back to the base and put it in the back room 'sick bay', next to a nicely recovering parlour palm. It was bone dry, so next time I was watering the palm I thought to give a bit of water to the 'dead' calathea. I also turned the heating on in that room when it started to get cold. Then a few weeks later - lo and behold, it's starting to sprout new leaves! So now I will be very careful - a bit of water, not too much. No direct sunlight, but not too dark. Keep her warm and sometimes let her hang out in the bathroom for some humidity (no natural light there though). Fingers crossed!

    I always try and recommend plants based on the persons habits. For example, do you want a plant you get forget about, have a snake plant, do you love loving your plants, get a myrtle.

    I must just be lucky enough to have the right conditions for calatheas in my house even though I live in Tasmania in a cool climate. They are one of my favourite plants. I know I lot of people find them difficult but I don't have to do anything to mine. They get watered and fed when necessary and routinely checked for pests as I do with all my houseplants but other than that I just leave them to their own devices and they go crazy and are looking beautiful. I do have humidifiers going, mainly for other plants so they likely benefit from that. Same with the hoyas. I grow mine in really small terracotta pots on a shelf over the kitchen sink where they don't get any direct light. I grow them in orchid mix which they absolutely love. They also love the worm juice from my worm farm mixed with a couple of drops of Charlie Carp. In fact, I'm either going to have to put up something for them to grow up, or move them because they grow so well they're getting too big for shelf in the sense they're hanging down on the bench and sink which is a total pain.

      @@laurachapin204 I have to confess that I'm an idiot. The plant is actually the Monstera siltepecana. I thought it was chlorotic from being inside the box it was shipped in, but no. Reb at Plantastica showed hers and I realized what I really had. Still looking for the Cebu Blue.
