    On the stealing cuttings topic : there is a great nursery a few miles away from my house, I really wanted to get a plant from them (i don't remember which one) but they were in huge pots and too pricey for me, so I just went up to the owner and explained this to him and asked if I could take a few cuttings. He gave me 5 small cuttings that I paid 10 dollars and he was super nice about it, and was really happy that I asked and he even gave me a small cactus for free. Always ask when in a small business

    Would you consider doing a video talking about stress. Like if you feel stressed sometimes at the amount of plants you have to care for. I know you love them, but I’m sure it gets stressful. Or talking about if you do have to go somewhere just that kind of thing in general.

    • @DeaDiabola

      In regard to plant care anxiety in general - I experience agoraphobia, severe ptsd and depression, and oftentimes crippling anxiety (I am also slowly dying from EDS, lol) - and for me? The plants get me out of bed. I love my dogs more than I love myself, but even they couldn't get me in the right headspace for a schedule outside of taking care of them.
      Plants have given me discipline, focus, and, funnily enough: more energy and willpower (not to mention physical strength) to take care of my dogs!
      I know for some people it may make anxiety worse having to worry about living things while they are unwell, so that is something to keep in mind. But I know that a lot of plant-obsessed people are kind of the same way as me, although there are of course plenty of us who just go "OOO PLANT PRETTY" and buy stuff impulsively and later realize we've made a terrible mistake lmao (I'm lookin' at you, cactus people XD)

    Glad you brought up the “stealing” topic. Anything that belongs to any stores if we take it without asking permission is simply “stealing”. Anyways, interesting plants suggestions for beginners.

      I agree…. I don’t understand people just taking things… I have asked once or twice if the business would consider selling me a cutting of a large plant and it’s been a 50/50 split on their answer …. Just ask! Or if you cannot afford it… then wait and save!!

    • @888fluffy
      @888fluffy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      tbf I think the 'everything belongs to the store' argument is a bit weak. All plants were originally just stolen from the wild. A stolen painting doesn't become yours if you buy it, it's still stolen. And yes, some of these plants haven't been wild in a very long time, but if propagating a wild plant gives you full ownership of the new plant, then by that logic, propagating someone else's plant gives you full ownership of your new plant.
      To be clear I don't think taking things from the wild is inherently immoral, I don't think taking anything is inherently immoral. What i'm saying is it's unclear whether we actually own nature or just use it, so really property rights are a bad standard to base your moral judgments around. It's much easier to judge whether you should take a plant cutting on whether it could hurt someone else. Is it likely to harm a small business? or even just ruin someone's day? Yes? then don't do it.

      It’s not right because the store needs to make money. That’s why I feel like stealing from a big box store is better than a small business. Also stealing from peoples yard is so wrong because they put a lot of effort and money into their plants

    Monstera siltepecana looks like a weed and grows like a weed - I think it's my fastest growing plant right now as I bought a two leaf cutting last year and already have a full basket although I have traded many cuttings, too. And I love rhipsalis - definitely in my top 3 genus of plants. Not to mention their natural habitats are disappearing so having them as houseplants is literally saving the species from extinction.

    I work at a bog box store garden centre (in canada) and let me tell you there’s some weird plant theft. Like, cacti pulled out of mixed planters and raven ZZ’s pulled out at the root bulb. I have come across several plants pulled out of their nursery pots and even some empty nursery pots.
    The cacti theft is more like why and how. Cause ouch.
    But seeing people do those black ZZs done so dirty was super not fun to deal with. And even though we are a big box store and don’t hike our prices up that much, those 4” raven ZZs are still 50$ so it really hurts me to see them treated so poorly by customers.

    Hi Nick! Those are some really pretty plants. I especially like the Monstera siltepecana, Dischidia oiantha, Sansevieria "Fernwood" and Rhipsalis pentaptera. The peperomia are pretty, too, but I don't have good luck with peperomias. The Peperomia viridis "Variegata" kinda reminds me of a Philodendron Brasil. I have the Fernwood, but I think it's a Mikado. I would love to find a Monstera siltepecana, Dischidia oiantha and Rhipsalis pentaptera. I recently found a Philodendron Birkin for $5.99 at Trader Joe's and was very excited! It's in a 5-6" pot, but not very big, but I'm excited to watch it grow. Thank you so much for sharing and please give Muffin a love!

    I agree with you about clippings, anyone who comes to a store with scissors or just rips live stems/leaves off a plant is stealing 100%. But if I find a piece on the floor or some knocked off succulent leaves there should be no issue taking those. I especially make sure I buy something if I see some fallen succulent leaves and want to take them. Lost respect for my local greenhouse when they put signs up saying it was theft and they would charge you for taking a fallen leaf from a plant. Like come on guys you already charge insane prices for some of your plants and ALL you plants have pests. Let me take a fallen jade leaf when I buy the pepperomia next to it.

    • @myconfusedmerriment
      @myconfusedmerriment 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My personal policy is to only take fallen bits from the big box stores, just because small nurseries might actually take the time to root that cutting if they find it, but in a big store, it’s bound for the trash. Just my 2 cents tho.

    • @SohiHien
      @SohiHien 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@myconfusedmerriment the nurseries here don't root cuttings they get all their plants from shipments. They are big enough they also supply the greenhouse of local stores so they are just destined for the trash.

  • @eggzakly
    @eggzakly 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hahaha! I actually stole a cutting from a store just yesterday! However, it was a leaf from a very beat up, slightly too big for me, and slightly overpriced peperomia in a big box store - if it hadn't been the last one left I would have probably just bought it in spite of the price tag and size, but I couldn't bring myself to pay that price for a plant that had been treated that way, so I nipped a small piece off the interior of the plant instead. I feel like I can forgive myself, though, as the mother plant probably went in the trash upon closing. I agree that it's really shitty to take a cutting in a visible spot and/or in a small business, though.

    Stealing cuttings from plant shops is horrible! Picking stuff that's already fallen off is great though 😂 I'm growing peperomia rosso from a leaf that I just found on the ground in a garden center. And a few other plants. I'm such a criminal, lol. I also frequently buy trashed plants that people have obviously been stealing cuttings from in the discount section, so consider me the savior of the dying.

    I always enjoy Nick's video's. However, I usually have to fast forward because he talks way to much. Still, a knowledgeable guy, which I truly appreciate.

    Anything that falls in the ground I’ll propagate. Just make sure it’s not diseased, or an old leaf or node. :)

    Merriam-Webster says pothos is pronounced POE-thawss (rhymes with “boss”), but no one ever says it that way lol

      It feels awful in the mouth to say that way, and phonetically doesn’t look like that, which may be why

      @@mstickney6612 once you understand it's Greek origins, it becomes easier. It's actually got a cool meaning, too.
