They deal with pests of all sizes and have to deal with everything Mother Nature throws at them.....AND YET...if I water them on a Wednesday instead of a Thursday, they fucking die. Had to get a smaller one to fill in the ugly lanky trunk looks a beat up helicopter. M. Grow also killed severely a beautiful umbrella tree which was doing so well and all glossy. Never again M. Grow on inside plants hate it as well. 🤣

    • @amunetamun-ra7947
      @amunetamun-ra7947 4 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      They need as much light as possible, (south facing window) so if you don't have that and can't supplement with a grow light many of them with start to etiolate and look a little crappy although some like aloe vera, sanseveria and rhipsalis can take lower light. They need incredibly well draining soil, 70% perlite some can even live in entirely pumice or an equivalent gritty mix and lastly they like lots of neglect. I love my succulent and cacti collection and have been appreciating them more and more this spring as everything else in my house is so demanding. My succulent collection is in a room I don't spend a lot of time in and I tend to forget about them but they continue to thrive on my neglect. I water them maybe once every 3-4 weeks. They could do with a little more in summer but they will survive, they'll just get shrivelled and are usually revived quite easily. They need way less water in winter, almost none for cacti. They come in such a huge range of interesting shapes, it might be worth another go at some point given the right light and soil.

      One of my very first plants was a pretty large fiddle feaf fig and it is still going strong in my bedroom and putting out big new leaves. Lol maybe you all have such problems because of too much water+too little fertilizer? Mine is in a large plastic pot and has a thick layer of expanded clay aggregate under the dirt layer. I water it with fertilized water every 7-10 days depending on how warm the time of year is and occasionally spray the leaves, especially the growing point on the top with fresh water.

      I slightly disagree with some of his “opinions” becouse they are based in that he cant keep alive the plant,take the ficus benjamina for example ,he has lost leaves an most surely died,but only becouse its a plant that LOVES direct sunligh,mine is in my balcony(west facing)and it thrives ..its also a plant you should proon ,like roses... so basing an opinion in not being informed of the care ,or triying to make it grow somewhere it shouldnt ,I dont think that gives the right to say its not a good plant .Will still keep watching his videos ,and have learned a lot from him..but many coments on this video,are clearly based on plats he has killed due to not caring for them correctly 😩❤️

      Hey, everyone has his/her plants that one does not like. I have Opuntias and don't like them for the same reason you don't like them. Still, they're a great pest deterrent in my front yard, and I do like the blooms. I also hear you on the Ficus set: I have the variegated Ficus Benjamina -that someone threw away- and thankfully, I was able to wrap it in plastic to get it home and it sits above my humidifier, and loves where it is. Nevertheless, if there was an overrated plant that I don't like, it is the Alpheandra squarosa - the Zebra plant! Buy cut flowers instead! Thank you, Nick!

If the super colorful variegation was a sure thing for the life the the plant it would make a little more sense to me. On a good specimen all those colors can look beautiful and really unique, but considering the high chances of degradation, reverting to all green, or turning all pink and therefore no chlorophyll, it's literally not worth the high price tag. I just don't think most of the people paying this prices understand the problems inherent in that plant. I'll take my chances and wait to see if a better, more stable version can be tissue cultured en masse and get one for cheap or maybe trade for something else in my collection, but I have better, more rare plants to spend my money on!

So after trying all ways to keep it alive, I chopped it down and put it outside because I couldn't stand looking at it die a slow death. I put it on my front porch (I live in a warm climate state) and within months the little thing started to revive and it's now about 3ft tall with healthy looking leaves. It's so interesting how some plants just take to the conditions you provide and give you no troubles whether or not they are hard plants to grow and then others will hate you no matter what you do! I have a watermelon peperomia that has been dying since the day I bought it almost three years ago. No matter what conditions I give it, it'll perk up a little bit and then spiral down again. It's down to two leaves and I have one other healthy least hopefully propagating in water but that has never worked for me before. Maybe I should have thrown it out before now, but I don't like giving up on plants! People say it's so easy to care for and grow and propagate, but I'm doing everything as by the books as I can and it still hates me!

    In Germany, you can currently get Philodendron birkin for as little as 78 cents, which is roughly a american dollar. They're small then, sold in like 1-2 inch pots I believe would be the equivalent, but you can also bigger ones in these standard medium pots for 5€, which is like $6,50. I don't know where it is know elsewhere, bit they where always really cheap here

      Wow, that's one of the easiest plants for me.
      We even had one that was neglected and looked completely brown, dry, and dead, but we figured--why not try watering it? And it came back. We started calling it the Lazareth plant.
      If it's droopy & you've been watering it, stop watering for a while. If you haven't been watering it, give it a drink & it perks back up within an hour or two. (At least in my experience.) You can check the soil to see if it needs watering by sticking your finger down in the soil 1 or 2 inches. If it's wet, wait. And if it's dry go ahead and water. Make sure it has good drainage.
      You can also check to see if there are roots growing out of the bottom. If there are, you can either trim the roots (if you like the size & don't want it to get bigger), or you can split the plant & put them into multiple pots, or you can put the whole thing into a bigger pot.
      They like indirect light. In a window, or by glass doors that get a lot of indirect light has been a good spot.
      Another thing you can do for them is to wipe the leaves off with a damp cloth to remove dust from the air & pollen (or whatever it is) if it's flowering.
      Sometimes they are grown in water, but I think they do better in potting soil. (I don't have any experience with other mediums.)
      Good luck, to you guys!

  • @sazji

    Being "of a certain age," I was really surprised when Ficus lyrata suddenly became an "it plant." I always thought of it as a bank lobby plant...big and green but without all that much character. It's a tree that looks wonderful when it's huge, if you're fortunate enough to see it in a tropical habitat, but otherwise...meh. Ficus benjamina may be more common, but it's graceful even as a smaller plant; it's temperamental until it's settled but leaves you lose will grow back. With lyrata, you screw up and you have a butt-ugly plant for a long time.
    One thing I notice as an outdoor gardener as well, is that there are many plants that I'd definitely grow as part of a tropical garden, but they just don't really impress me as single specimen plants. (Similarly, I can think of plenty of garden plants that work well in conjunction with other plants, but I wouldn't be interested in having them as single specimens.)
    Yes, Opuntias are evil. Especially O. microdasys. I'm forever putting them back into the back of the displays after people pull them out to look at them.
    I think the "fish hook" Mamillarias are almost equally horrible tho!

    • @HowardSalinger
      @HowardSalinger 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Agreed. I’m sure ficus lyrata is gorgeous in its native habitat but as a house plant it just looks like MS Word clip art of a tree to me. I’ve never really understood the appeal.

  • @danielkwood

    I've had the complete opposite experience with my Ficus Lyrata and I barely give it any attention. Out of all my house plants, it is given the least amount of attention and is completely thriving. I have used the most budget potting mix available, never fertilised it, give it about one or two cups of water a week and it gets a moderate amount of indirect sunlight in the corner of a room away from windows. Yet it keeps growing and putting out lush new leaves. I even left it outside for a month over summer while I was travelling and it survived (got a bit of shock and browning on the edges of a couple of leaves but bounced back very quickly). I absolutely love this plant! By far the easiest non-cactus plant that I've ever looked after.
