    Definitely the most underrated band in history. How are these guys not in the Rock and roll hall of fame with their massive following and massive hit albums and almost a dozen hit songs and of course their unique sound!

      Not by a long shot. You must not have grown up around these times? The band is amazing and very respected. Not to mention one of the most influential bands of the time.

      The term "underrated" is the most overrated term in the English dictionary. People typically use it when they mean something else. Example: they mean they like something but they say it's "underrated". Supertramp literally blew up radio back in the day. They were one of the most "rated" bands at that time and even much later. So they can't be referred to as underrated. Since they were very rated. Hope that helps.

    • @ricomajestic
      @ricomajestic 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      @@danroberts9050 By underrated I mean that they are not as popular and overplayed as some of the other bands that came out of that era like Queen and Styx for example. A lot of people seem to forget how great they were. I think it was partly due to the two main guys in the band never really liking each other.

    • @ofdrumsandchords
      @ofdrumsandchords 5 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      No, we knew them, but in the seventies there were so much incredible good rock bands, Yes, Genesis, ELP, Led Zep, Toto ... As a drummer, I was listening to jazz-rock, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Miles Davis, Santana, Weather Report, Return to forever, Frank Zappa, stuff with odd time signatures and strange chords.
      I wasn't much interested in Supertramp, they wrote good compositions but it lacked of groove. Good songs for students, as Bob C.'s drum parts were very clean and well built, not enough action for my taste.

      @@samuelechiarelli9594 I never heard a drummer saying the rythm section of Supertramp was fantastic. Compare to Toto. All drummers are fans of Jeff Porcaro's work. It's obvious when you play along the records, Jeff had a phenomenal groove, like Simon Phillips with Toto after his death or Vinnie Colaiuta with Sting. But I agree, Supertramp wrote and played very good music.

    • @samuelechiarelli9594
      @samuelechiarelli9594 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Philippe Chevaut yeah I totally agree with you, in terms of drumming, supertramp don’t excel or can’t be considered better than lots of other band just like of course Jeff’s Toto and all the bands you mentioned. I was talking in general about the songwriting side of supertramp, mainly about Roger and Rick’s work. On the other side, as a drummer too, I can’t agree more with you!

    • @thatmatt41

      It was shot on film so it was able to re-scanned and upscaled. Oh, the magic of 16mm film. (Edit: The Paris 79' show was shot on 16mm rather than 35mm)

    • @thatmatt41
      @thatmatt41 4 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      @Mick Nilsen Even videos shot onto tape look really good for the time. The problem with tape vs film is that there was no use for HD excluding movie theatres or early adopters of HD, so the high quality image would have been downgraded to SD and then broadcast, and the issue with tape is that it can't be upscaled to HD like 35mm (or even 16mm, check out the Genesis 1973 Shepperton Video, shot on 16mm and upscaled to 1080p). However if one has the original master HD tapes it could be rescanned from the tapes (for example Pink Floyd's The Wall tour, the Nassau Coliseum shows are in possession of waters in full hd on tape rather than film)
      edit: me from whenever I first posted this comment doesn't know what he's really talking about. Stuff shot to tape before the sony hdvs system (early version of hd for the Japanese muse system, equivalent to 1030 lines) were always 480 lines for NTSC or 576 lines for PAL, I believe without exception. The Nassau Collesium shows of the wall tour were shot at 480 lines. 1080 lines couldn't be viewed on any equipment, and wouldn't have made sense to do at the time. Should also note that this paris show was shot on 16mm, NOT 35mm as I originally thought.

And think about the competition in 1979- AC/DC Highway To Hell, Pink Floyd The Wall, Led Zep In Through The Outdoor, Van Halen II, Fleetwood Mac Tusk, Michael Jackson Off The Wall, The Eagles The Long Run, The Clash London Calling, The Pretenders, Neil Young Rust Never Sleeps, Cheap Trick Dream Police, etc. etc. Not counting all of the New Wave and punk albums. 1979 was an insane year for music.

      @@christiancristof491 FYI, I am a huge Supertramp fan and Paris was the first LP record I ever owned, but (apparently unlike you) I am not so narrow minded that I cannot see the artistry in some of the current music. It's not even a comparison by the way, it was a statement that 'music is still good if you are listening to the right music' and your only argument is to insult me? Not much of an argument then, is it?

    Huge band... I worked with a bloke in Ontario and had a music convo with him one night...his family was from England and he tells me his cousin is in a popular band...he was a total square and I asked him who he was...blown away it was John Helliwell LOL. I gave him a CD of Supertramp's Greatest Hits and he was blown away too! He'd never listened to them!
