Shiki is a genuine vampire horror anime that builds up the story slowly and steady to a horrifying ending. I honestly feel this show is criminally underrated and it deserves more appreciation.

If my kid suddenly died from something unknown, I'd want the doctors to do any and all tests. Closed coffin funeral is fine so long as her body contributes to stopping whatever caused her death.
I wouldn't want anyone else to go through losing someone, especially their child.
If that would happen to me, and I wouldn't get any closure, and it looked like nothing was being done or that investigation was being impeded... vampires would be the last thing the village would have to worry about. I would honestly go insane.
Some religions and practices condemn any kind of tampering with a corpse, for any reason, even an autopsy. They regard it as a form of defiling the physical form or soul or something or other. They differ in the details. Doesn't seem to be wise to me. Nonetheless, religion.

One thing that never made sense to me is that the vampires would drain their victims of blood to death. Wouldn’t it make more sense to alternate victims so they would individually replenish themselves?
It depends on manty factors like if they can resist (in multiple adaptations most or all can't when they start sucking they lost control and suck dry as urge is too much) or what are consequences of bite like that. If human can survive bite it makes much sense. If slightest bite turns human into another Vampire it's best to suck dry.

The vampires wanted to do this. The alternate feeding method was proposed but they denied it. Basically the blue haired guy and his family or whatever wanted to do this
The Shiki "Leader" wanted to create a Shiki only village, it have come to a point where they made up a new funerary just to deal with the logistics of storing the corpses and seeing if they would return as a Shiki
This is based on one of the earlier form of vampires. The belief is they would only attack family members since they were easier targets

Shiki is a series that is CRIMINALLY underrated. It's one of the few pieces of media that is genuinely horrifying to me.
Also if I were one of the shiki I'd not have drained people to the point of death it's not like you couldn't rotate people.
While it would be the smart thing to do (and it's even proposed to them), the whole point of the conflict is that they could, but they don't want to.
They want to convert the whole town into undead so they can have a safe haven of sort. And I agree this is way too underrated. It’s my favorite anime
Ah I see. I been thinking they could drink from different targets every night so nobody dies and if the humans still discovered them,they should know it's not a problem.
I would say also stick to drinking from the elderly so the doctors assume it's just a very weak disease or mosquitoes not strong enough to effect young people and not strong enough to indanger the old.
But it would be nice to have a vampire army so they can stop any foolish humans who try to hunt them not listening to reason or common sense.
Also work to find out if wild animal blood works or turn a scientist so he or she can create artificial blood.
Maybe even send a few Shiki and jinro into a big city with the same survival plans.
Also I wonder what vampire hunters would do after being forced to survive as vampires themselves.

The ironic thing is"how to beat the Shiki" is a major plot point of the anime. Oh sure the first few chapters are all scary and the vampires are very proud of how clever and powerful they are...... But the last half is them realizing just how vulnerable in the modern day they've truly become. Also kudos to this being one of the very few sources of vampire fiction where you literally have protagonist characters that are turned and literally have the willpower to just NOT EAT.... Literally preferring to starve to death rather than predate on others. It's always been a mildly annoying facet of Western vampire myth that once your turn willpower really isn't an issue anymore... at best it's just a matter of time.... And not much time at that
To be fair?
For humans, it is incredibly difficult to starve themselves. It requires willpower that most people don't have, nor do they want to have it, because your survival instincts kick in.
@@toolatetothestory actually, i'd argue we do it on a fairly regular basis all things considered..even before you stack self preservation against the urge to murder. but due to drama,/pacing, that whole "must kill" thing gets accelerated a LOT.
tbh European ones were never super powerful as they can;t enter w/o invitation. You literally didn't have to beat them. Simply don't let them in and you don't even have to secure doors or sth. They couldn't cross empty door frame.

@@Petaurista13 but that can be gotten around. the Fright night remake did a lovely job of pointing out some of the loopholes. for example: 1.) it has to be an actual, lived in house. buildings still under construction don't count. 2.) it has to be INTACT. burn down the house, no barrier. 3.) mental compulsion or exploitation of trauma to convince someone to extend an invitation works just fine.
Shiki is one of my favorite horror animes, the pacing and symbolism is amazing. The “if we kill them all, are we just as bad as them?” And the right and wrong being justifiable as a moral conflict is fantastically done
I honestly saw no moral conflict because the vampires came there and started eating people and killing them against their will and even stated they don’t have to necessarily do this the town went in hysterics due to something mythical and genocidal happening and barely got out
Yeah I mean it seemed pretty clear cut that you have to destroy these vampires out of self defense lol, they’re basically apex predators that seem to be willing to kill to simply try and keep their existence a secret. Can’t coexist with that.

I watched this anime last Halloween, and it became one of my favorite anime. From the very first episode until the last one, it kept me at the edge of my seat. As a fan of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, Shiki satisfied my love for a good mystery that a big cast of characters tries to solve before it's too late for them. Shiki does even more surprising thing than Higurashi does, and that is introducing moral dilemmas. I wholeheartedly recommend this anime to any lover of horror/thriller genre.

I always disliked how the Anime wanted you to have sympathy for the vampires in the second hand of the show. To my knowledge, while its true vampires feel a strong blood lust when first turned, such as they cannot control themselves, there is nothing stopping them from seeking medical attention from the Japanese government later. Pretty sure if they had turned themselves over to the government, they could then either buy or be given blood from hospitals to stay alive. Thus eliminating the need to kill anyone. I can't really sympathize with the vampires when they don't even try to figure out a solution that won't kill their friends or families.
That entire idea boils down to utter nonsense. It wouldn't have a chance of working out. Humans are instinctively adverse to anything different from them, even when it comes to differences between themselves. If society's laws didn't restrict people's actions, they'd be killing each other for just about anything. And the vampire's very existence takes difference to the extreme. So, they'd be killed on sight just for being what they are. What humans do to each other on a regular basis and what they would do further without legislative interference is enough evidence to prove that a coexistence with a non-human species, let alone a peaceful one, would never work.
@@shawnbenjamin9636 I don't really get your point here, first off we do live in a society of law, and the characters in the show live in a society of law. So talking about what would happen in a society without laws seem irrelevant to my point.
Also you just seem to be just asserting it couldn't work here, but if people are as bad as you are saying, how did early humanity coexist well enough to inter breed with Neanderthals, or even survive long enough to even establish societies. Seems to me they would have never formed a society and be stuck in endless tribal war. Could you elaborate on that?
@@LordOfLuck Probably because they weren't yet driven by a conflict that they would be willing to tear each other apart. Humans are basically volatile creatures on a hair trigger. It doesn't much to cause full blown pandemonium. Otherwise, forms of civil unrest such as riots wouldn't be known concepts.

Also you seem to have a flaw in your logic, just because you can point to humans acting violently throughout history and in different situations, doesn't mean that such violence is inherent to the human condition. All you can conclude is that some people are violent. The level of violence and causes for them have fluctuated way too much through history, societies and cultures, as well have had too many causes to nail down so simply.
I'm a human therefore I wouldn't want vampires to be given rights by the government because they would overwhelm us very quickly, humans has always been the dominant and superior species in this planet since the dawn of time and I want it to stay that way.
Let's say the government gave the vampires rights nothing bad would happen right? Nope, in the next few months the vampire population has skyrocketed because of careless feeding frenzies, saving loved ones form death, "who wouldn't say no to immortality?", and just vampires who want to turn people for no reason. In the next dacade most of the human population has become vampires and they would be selling blood instead of food and humans would be hunted down to be offered to join back society and become a vampire or become a blood farm. And as the human population decreases we would ignore all projects and prioritize searching for an alternative blood source and if they don't let the humans repopulate everyone would go extinct.

Now we need one more from vampire perspective. Since their plan was doomed from the start, they'd just get nuked, there's no way government wouldn't notice that noone comes back from that village.
You wouldn't even need that. Just a battalion of tanks and a few UCAVs. Perhaps the M2 Bradley due to its fast firing main gun (that being a 25mm chaingun) and secondary 7.62 NATO machine gun. Pack the rear with an infantry cleanup crew to double-tap the vampires and set them ablaze.
Though if we want to go the "fun" route, we could always go with the AC-130U. Then send in the tanks and cleanup crew.

The shiki would be pretty resilient to conventional military assault because of their regenerative abilities, unless you impale their heart or sever the head they stay active. Punctures anywhere else or brain damage are only temporary, so unless an armed force came in with the proper equipment it would take a while to get any results. Plus they wouldn't show up on thermal imaging and for all intents and purposes appear dead unless closely examined.
The blood samples would reveal that the blood was being removed instead of the red blood cells being lysed because of the lack of significant cellular debris. The presence of high levels of naive blood cell precursors mean it isn't a disease that interferes with blood production most likely, so the doctor should've figured things out earlier.
Yes, but then we whould not have this anime. The author twisted some things to make the story work how he wanted.

People were annoyed about previous entries being less "Survival Guide" and more recap/summary, but it seems they got the message with this episode
I really love this breakdown however I will say I don't think the point about putting a stake through the heart is one to take in this scenario. I mean yeah legends say that's how to deal with a vampire, but we've just noted that they have no pulse and still rise from the dead. No pulse means no beating heart. Odds are they don't need their heart to function if it's not doing anything for them anyways.
If I had to pick between one of the two split second options- going for the head is the better bet. As you said, you can't operate your body without a head. You need your brain for all of the functions they do. No brain, no moving. That and fire if I was able to knock one out again. Can't regenerate if you're literally ashes in the wind and water.

I read a lot about european legends about vampires, werewolf and witches, and you would be surprised about how movies and legends are different. For example, vampires do not die with a stake in their heart, and can walk in sunlight. The stake is to paralise then while the head is severed or destroyed. In legends vampires die when the head is destroyed. Also, silver weapons are good against werewolfs, vampires and witches(Who are under spells that grant invulnerability)

Megumi made me so angry that I couldn't get past episode 5. I just could not stand her behavior and crap she does. So thanks for the recap. I never would've known this much of the story otherwise.
Thanks. I did think she and Natsuno would've made a cute couple in the very beginning, but dropped that thought as soon as I realised Natsuno probably hated her since she was spying on him outside his bedroom window every evening. Chick was a total yandere.
As a second thought, do watch the entire anime. (If it helps, Megumi gets what she deserves)

Don't sleep on Megumi's death scene in *Shiki.* Megumi is one of the 1st victims to "die" during the vampire outbreak. But she doesn't stay that way.
Megumi stalks her school crush every night, since her death. She looks down on all the townsfolk. She wears inappropriate clothing daily. Her preference is lastest fashions in a small rural farming community. And on &:on.
If Megumi forced you to quit the anime a few episodes in. Do not stress. Check out Megumi's death scene. It's quite brutal, thorough & very creative.

It was a small traditional village and it was one of the few Japanese places in the story that still buries their dead instead of cremation that is why the Shikis moved to that village

Rewatching Shiki right now and wow... still 10/10. In my top 5 animes of all time. Several moments that affect my nights sleep, lots of haunting visuals, several episodes that are really hard to watch to this day... masterful horror. I was afraid of the dark and vampires specifically as a kid, so this anime brought me right back to those feelings.
Does the anime end when this video ends or is there more afterwards?

Well to survive the first thing to do is not travel alone at night, notice most of the shiki only hunt at night. And then there are the special cases where there are a few shiki who can come out in the night and day time. Second thing to do is always try to travel with someone

I understood that no one really wants to be a shiki, they drink blood to survive and that is not their fault. However, in Toshio’s side, looking back, innocent people and even children had been murdered to satisfy their hunger without mercy. Due to his frustration as a doctor, he fights to live together with his people. Now for Seishin’s side, he value both lives of humans and shiki and all deserve to live, but when Seishin meet Sunako, he understood himself more and that encounter made him a shiki. Actually, both humans and shiki has a monstrous side. I was also shocked when the villagers killed Seishin’s family even if they are not shikis. Toshio also experienced the same thing when his mother died without biting her making sure she will not rise to be a shiki.
But I concluded that this cycle of madness must stop. It was heartbreaking to see Tooru (Natsuno’s bestfriend) struggling to live because he’s afraid to die and don’t want his family to die as well, that’s why he killed Natsuno. But that consequence, led him to experience guilt and despair. If I become a shiki, I don’t want to kill my friends, family and innocent people to fight for my hunger, that’s why, when I saw the nurse struggling and decided not to eat her co-nurse is a bit heroic because she already accepted death and chose to be good. Now for my side as well, I personally agree with Toshio. If I were a villager, I rather kill people that died than be a shiki who will soon kill innocent people. This is a matter of choosing what is less disastrous.
Me as a human: "Let me rot in my throne."
Me as a Shiki: "Let me burn in my throne."
Me as Death: "Leave my throne and never return."

Honestly I would be sooooooooooo screwed in a zombie apocalypse unless by some miracle I'm either immune to the infection oooooooooor I keep my mind straight even after the transformation. Either way I would surely at least go down fighting even though I know I'm getting the zombie infection no matter what I do.
Or maybe I would somehow just happen to have all scientist knowledge before the zombie infection is born,in which case I would get some body guards,put on some armor probably straight from Dark Souls, capture some zombies,do my undead research, and create a different infection that makes me a smart zombie that will never decompose. So excited to see this up! Some interesting facts about "Shiki". It was created by Fuyumi Ono, the wife of "Another" author Yukito Ayatsuji. Being created by a woman many people attempted to boycott "Shiki" because at the time manga/anime creators were "made for men". This happened to "Full Metal Alchemist" author as well (hence the reason why she used a male pen name). Decades after the release of "Shiki" its finally getting the recognition as a literary work of art.

@@omivnr3858 I don't think it's necessarily that they didn't like women participating as mangaka. I grew up in Southeast Asia (where my mom is from) and currently live here. Many Asian countries were extremely conservative (some still are), so men had their place in the workforce while women stayed at home or did smaller jobs. But when women wanted jobs men were traditionally known for some people were hesitant because it was a new way of life. That's why the 80s through '90s were tougher for female mangaka to write outside of the romance genre, which was traditionally female. Even in 2019, Shonen Jump made comments about why they wouldn't hire a female editor right off the bat for Shonen Jump Weekly. That's why they never had a female editor, ever.
UCLA did a study about how shonen manga authors have changed over time. Still, the shonen genre has 75% male authorship/editors (I'll link the article if you ever want to read it). However, there was plenty of anime/manga produced by female authors, especially in the early 2000s. But they didn't receive a big hype or recognition until several years later, or it became popular overseas. The big one is Full Metal Alchemist. There have been interviews with Hiromu Arakawa about when it leaked that he was she. And the reasons why she used a male pen name. With the creation of FMA came D.Gray Man and Demon Slayer. Dorohedoro was created a little before FMA, but it wasn't as popular.
Women over time were given a fair shot in shonen manga/anime, which is great because, like you said, some of the manga created by women are killers! But "Shiki" was made in the 90s but didn't get one once of attention until the mid-2000s when we saw the sudden incline of female mangaka/authors/editors going mainstream. That's why FMA is considered a breakthrough for female mangaka/editors.
In general, no matter where you look, there will always be gender disparities in the workforce. No matter if you're a doctor, mangaka, or office worker. There are a lot of interesting articles and legitimate studies done by universities on the internet. If this topic interests you, I would definitely recommend reading them!
What? Fuyumi Ono was already well known for having written Ghost Hunt and The Twelve Kingdoms and has been published since the 80s. Moreover, she's a novelist, not a mangaka, so you won't see her work on Jump magazines unless someone decided they want an adaptation like they did here. Shiki's mangaka is a man, Ryuu Fujisaki.
Moreover there's been female mangaka publishing in shounen magazines far longer than Shiki's manga publishing (2007): Pretty much anything by Rumiko Takahashi (Urusei Yatsura dates to 1978), Angelic Layer by CLAMP (1999), Doroherdoro (2000), D.Grey-Man (2004), Pandora Hearts (2006) and even Fullmetal Alchemist itself (2001). It wouldn't make sense for people to complain so late down the lane.

I think shiki can be classified as somewhat of a medical anime. Didn't realize it in my first viewing.
By far one of my favorite horror anime I have ever watched.
It may take a while to get going until it gets exciting, but it is worth it.
Kinda wish the video kept going to show Toshio getting his hands on his wife who turns into a Shiki then perform experiments on her to figure out what Shikis are, how to kill them, etc.
And of course the massive raid on the Kirishiki Castle.

I hate that I work in the medical field cuz I can't help but clock some of the explanations in this video. The infos are not necessarily wrong but they just are almost there (but not quite there).
For example in 7:56, he is correct in saying that reticulocyte are released when the ptx (patient) is experiencing low blood count, he is also correct when he said that nRBC and hyperplasia of erythroblast are observed in ptx when there's lack of rbc. But he just didn't correlation these two infos, he could have easily correlated these infos by saying that "due to reticulocyte the ptx's body will try to compensate for the loss blood by releasing young/immature rbcs (aka reticulocyte) hence rRBC and erythroblast are observed in peripheral circulation to try to maintain normal RBC count but experience hemorrhagic shock if it fails to do so".
Also, physicians are not really allowed to use jargons when talking to ptxs, jargons like reticulocyte, nRBC or erythroblast. We use young red cells, immature/mature red cells, and instead of "hyperplasia" we simply say "increase in number" for the ptxs to understand easily the diagnosis.
Again, I'm not hating, just a bomber that the explanation is almost tiny bit there but just lack a little something to tie it all in... idk maybe I'm too much I'm sorry can't help myself ~_~

Nothing has sent shivers down my spine, my stomach churn or made me cry like this anime.
The slow burn and development of both sides made the losses and torment all the more agonizing. I normally have a tough stomach for gruesome stuff (not claiming to be some kind of hardcore edgelord, just that I like the gorey genres), especially if it's 2D, but this anime is so well-written that the horror and gorey elements got to me way more than I thought it would.

The nanosecond I heard the new couple was eternally youthful and live on a hill: "vampires? Vampires."
One thing I always noticed, is that Seishin's eyes go from grey to yellow in episode 6, I think. If that is true it means he was one of the few not reported as dying or had kept himself hidden enough to not be detected.

One of the best things about this show was that most people in the show made pretty logical and believable mistakes. While some decisions were frustrating as a viewer, I could still understand why the parents didn’t want the autopsy for the first victim. The small village hospitality would probably have really polite people that would invite someone they don’t know over. Yeah Megumi was a bitch. Ignoring the stalker stuff, I hated when she begged for her life at the end after killing people herself. That steamroller squashing her face was so satisfying. I think you're not supposed to like her.
Seishin I didn't mind. He was conflicted about what he should be doing and was suffering from depression. Then at the last pivotal moment, he made a choice for once in his life and now he has something to live for.
@@aeroga2383 my main issue with Seishin was that he knew what was happening, chose to do nothing, while chastising the one person who was willing to do what needed to be done to save the village. His one choice to save that Shiki girl is going to ultimately lead to more deaths…which he supposedly wanted to avoid, hence saving her from being killed.

Shiki is great. The real horror of the story is knowing that you could just as easily be the one getting a stake driven through your heart as it could be you're the one driving it in what was once your friend or neighbor.

But I'm usually long gone from this existence once things truly begin. If I stay, then the Horsemen will ride again.
The show is very well written (For most things...) and the doctor very realistically figured out what was going on at the same time as you'd imagine a real doctor would. Its not impossible for a young woman to die from kidney failure. Its very unusual for sure, but it wouldn't make you jump to paranormal conclusions. It happening again and again though... that'd start making you paranoid.

discover them donate blood to the local hospital, give the blood to the shiki, the plague wont grow every body works together no execution problem solved
I'm so glad that shiki's fandom is still alive, I really love the moral dilemma of who gets more of a right to survive. After my watch I was just stunned how realistic this show was and I was generally desperate to see if I can find an answer to their problem. I just love how much this show has to offer the bone chilling screams and numbness after my watch is something almost never to be able to find ever again.

@@unlicenseddoctor3863 I feel the shiki's actions are quite justifiable, its not just because they are evil, but more of they think of the humans as a wall that they need to overcome to create a better society where they can live. Just like how humans need to overcome the barriers of nature to live better. You can totally disagree but that's just my opinion.
