Hey vsauce. Do you think human intelligence can be boiled down to a single number like IQ? Does it even make sense to try and quantify it? I know these questions are extremely vague but you are such a great guy. Keep up the videos!
Humanity is created by nature. Even if humans gets extinct another intelligent specie could raise. So extinction is not the answer. Cultures rise and disappear but they let a legacy. Neanderthal men got extinguish but our ancestors probably took their culture with them to us. Let's life hopefully, let's try to survive.
@ISometimesExist Honestly ? I forgot ever writing that. But seriously, doing pretty great, I'm at a place in my life that I didn't think possible for me 7 years ago, yet here I am.
Two aliens are flying through the solar system. One turns to the other and says "The third planet has life which has figured out interplanetary travel and nuclear weaponry!" The second alien asks "Are they intelligent life?" The first alien replies "I don't think so. All the weapons are pointed at themselves."
Not gonna lie, that first part were you told us that at some point humans could just use 3D printing to mass produce devastating viruses and such and possibly use them for...nefarious deeds... yeah, scared the crap outta me. Now, before I go change my underwear, I was just say thanks again, Michael, for another awesome video =) I always get so excited when I see these in my sub feed. Also, I'm sure you probably won't see this comment amongst the 2k+ others. Just typing this in the off chance ^_^
Well, if it's 3D printable, that'd prob mean it's already existed. And i think majority of the diseases that have existed prob have vaccines and cures by now.
You don't need every resource in the world to create Ebola, though. You just need the few chemicals that it's made out of, most of which exist in common cells. It's the arrangement of the materials that make it deadly.
Ryanator well all you need is all the elements used to make a substance, then something to assemble them the correct way to make whatever you want. While still science fiction I don't think it's impossible.

Believe it or not, the government actually did experiment the effects of nuclear bombs by using enlisted soldiers. Sometimes, they would set off a nuke and then order the soldiers to look at it.
The answer to the Fermi paradox is self destruction, after the invention of space flight and nuclear weaponry. Humans have also been subtly hinting at it in film and pop culture unknowingly for decades. Get your bomb shelter, because when one goes off they all go off, and it's coming sooner than you would like to believe. In a world shrouded in hysteria and identity politics, we are going to hit a boiling point. The next war to end all wars will end all wars, we have made sure of that by turning self defense and weaponry into abominations, device made only to kill more and more. This unfortunately may have been the double edged sword that will take its toll on our species.
I have never really watched vsauce, so when I as a doomsayer start hearing my theories being read back to me in a vsauce video, I think it makes this a bit more worrysome. I had to step away from the computer because, ya know, understanding we are all about to be wiped, and cataloguing will have amounted to nothing is quite scary and hard to stomach. I just hope humanity realizes I've been preaching the same rhetoric, and scientific lingo for about 2-3 years now, and I'm only 21 and fresh out of high school, so I can get a noble peace prize, for 21 years of trauma and life expierence that got me to this conclusion. Also, Hawking is right when he says "global warming is irreversible." Also if you really think shit isn't getting that bad here, tell me why all the billionaires are tying to fly to mars, and known billionaires in America and other countries engrossed in political hysteria are fleeing to remote countries, and locations. I think some wealthy people are already in their bomb shelters.
Also I don't know how many content creators I have to watch that share my worldviews that look just unnerved as myself. H3h3 I'm sure has had similar thoughts, and post Malone
All the evidence is there too, I also think I have the majority of scientific consensus on my side. Humans are just naturally self destructive to the planet, and our untapped potential is not a good thing. We started out taking dirt to make structures, then we used wood when we started cutting trees. For every success we have had, we had to directly take from the planet, we are now at a point of overgrazing all of our resources, not just that but we pollute; our oceans are filled with plastic, the once corral read, no a giant corral corpse. I may sound like your average alex Jones, but seriously, I'm a bit more grounded than you think, and I have every reason to believe, we are going to be gone within the next 50 years, and if we are still around, we will be barley hanging on, as the mental health issues that already plague the population will be worse, and we will all just be accusing everyone and anyone over everything.
They would very probably analyze or run a computer simulation on the genome sequence you sent, to see if it is dangerous, and that considering they would consider ethical doing it (printing a living being) at all. About 3d printing other stuff, they would also put similar security measures.
One part of my brain kept trying to anthropomorphize the computer's action, reasoning that the computer saw losing the game as "death" and thus pausing was its desperate attempt to stay alive. In reality it's just the most logical choice: losing the game is inevitable if you play long enough so the only way to avoid losing at Tetris is to pause and never resume.
I keep seeing people comment that and I don't understand why. To me the computer's idea just annoyed me and was stupid. It makes sense but I think is a stupid decision. Of course the computer was programmed to not lose so it would lose its entire meaning by losing so in that way it is smart but it failed to take into account that by pausing the game it isn't winning. In a weird way that computer has already failed it is one purpose: to win. I wonder if the computer had been programmed differently if it would have just restarted the game over until it eventually won. By programming it to focus on not losing the creator inhibited what it can do.
YingofDarkness I think in this case the limitation is not so much on the computer's part but on the game's part. Tetris cannot be won. You can finish one stage or level, then you move on to the next one with higher difficulty and so on but at no point do you reach an end. The computer was specifically programmed to ignore long-term effects (that is, simply playing perfectly for all eternity) so the only short-term strategy to avoid losing is to avoid playing.
***** The programme was designed to win, but it couldn't win, so instead of losing, it gave up. It stopped playing. Its creepy because its like you or I saying "screw this game! I give up!" and turning it off. If a computer will do that, what does it say about us? If we can't 'win', should we just give up?
If you have the ability to 3d print anything you want and you decide to use it to start an ebola pandemic, you're kinda fucked up. I'd be 3d printing cheetos and fleshlights before that.
The fact that intelligent life seems to have a hard time not going extinct in our universe should make us try to give ourselves the besst fighting chance at beating the odds and not just give up and fade away. The extremely unlikely event that is human existence should be cherished.
+gerard adams Haha, yes! Just nudge em and be like, "Hey Michael, tell us a Story" "Okay. .. Heeey! V-sauce!- Michael here" *effortlessly goes off on mindblowing 15 minute life lesson.*
"Hey Vsauce, Michael here. We're smoking blunts. But what is a blunt? And where do they come from? What is 'from' and who created it? Who are YOU..??????"
What's I've Learned! • I'm not special • Extinction is Likely • Continued expansion of human knowledge will kill us • but who know lmao Goddamn, I love Vsauce.
Extinction will happen to everything, everybody and everywhere. Our existence doesnt represent even 0.1% of the earth or universe's age The 21st century aint nothing but a really small time of human history
The way Michael gave reasons to live on and continue humanity using a mind boggling example of a video game playing program and comparing it to us was outstanding! That's why I love Vsauce...! He's mind boggling.
That's only if we assume there is a solution. If the computer would have been right and there would have been no way to "figure it out", it's move would have been the best one possible. Besides, it seems questionable whether a better distant future would justify suffer suffering and death in the immediate future. I don't see an obligation to go extinct, but I don't see one not to go extinct either.
I have a very fitting quote for this “Let’s be clear. The planet is not in jeopardy. We are in jeopardy. We haven’t got the power to destroy the planet-or to save it. But we might have the power to save ourselves." -Ian Malcolm
George Stockbridge Wargames. Its a movie where a computer has a game named "Global Thermonuclear War" but is accidentally connected to NORAD therefore triggering an actual nuclear launch and they have to stop the launches. If I can remember the movie. Watched it a long time ago.
Vsauce (Michael): "Can you catch a tiger by the toe? Well, a toe is made of bone and muscle, and muscle has the letter E in it, but did you know that E is also in the word Eggs. Eggs were first..." WTF JUST HAPPENED??
I don’t think people understand how fucking smart this guy is and why he doesn’t have more subscribers on TH-cam he might be absolutely out of his mind and confusing sometimes but there’s really nothing wrong with that I don’t know why am commenting on his eight-year-old video but a lot of his older videos keep coming up and As always thanks for reading
David Byrne I don't know much about programming so you can entirely dismiss what I say if you'd like but, if it was programmed to pass the game, in a way failing to do this would be like dying, as we're programmed to survive. Then suddenly something comes along that stops it from doing the thing it is dedicated to doing, the thing it is made to do, sounds like someone throwing themselves into a cryogenic freezer because they know they'll die otherwise. I'm wondering if the computer ever did it again.
I'd rather die at 40 if it was a super rare astronomical cause and by that i mean a neutron star collision, a meteor collision, alien invasion etc. than to die at 80 by a "boring" cause. I'm not suicidal, but i'd die to see a super rare astronomical event.
I love the Vsauce crew because they always tend to end things on a positive optimistic note, even when dealing with dark topics like Human Extinction, Nuclear Weapons, and Dissapearences.
I’ve noticed that the general trend is that the darker the video is, the more excited he is in the intro.

Also doomsday prepping is a very popular hobby among the rich :3

This just made me realize how dangerous 3d printing would be in the hands of say.. a serial killer?
If you kill everyone at the same time then you are technically not a serial killer
They would very probably analyze or run a computer simulation on the genome sequence you sent, to see if it is dangerous, and that considering they would consider ethical doing it (printing a living being) at all. About 3d printing other stuff, they would also put similar security measures.

Ok thanks
Ok no that computer pausing the game thing was creepy af
It raised the hairs on my neck, and for some reason my eyes started watering... creepy
Anyone think he's on a watch list or something after researching tons of stuff like this?

That's only if we assume there is a solution. If the computer would have been right and there would have been no way to "figure it out", it's move would have been the best one possible. Besides, it seems questionable whether a better distant future would justify suffer suffering and death in the immediate future.
