    Rum is honestly the best place to start for collectable spirits. My experience has shown me that you'll get rums of comparable age/quality for a fraction the price of Whiskies.

      @pyotrilyichtchaikovsky3733 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      The age on rum however has no legal binding. In most of the rum producing countries the distillers can decide for themselves how and why they stage certain rums certain ages, sometimes its a average age of all the barrels, sometimes they have integrity and use the whiskey method (lowest age barrel that went in there counts), often its the age of the oldest barrel that went into the blend. You have quite a few brands who put drops of old rum (like 21 or 18 or 25 yr old rum) and then call the whole blend 25 years of age.

      @@pyotrilyichtchaikovsky3733exactly, and on top of that Rum producers don't need to disclose flavouring additives, whereas Scotch and American straight whiskey can't even have any additives other than caramel colouring.

      Been trying rum for years now just like the taste had both of these besides four square and flora de Cana 18yr isn't the best go either their 25yr or just buy the12yr not getting much better with the 18yr compared to 12yr but the 25 yr will make you believe your not drinking rum. Next one if you want a mixing rum or just a fooler tasting rum might be a little harsh unless your a sriaght drinker is 896 8yr cost about 22 to 25 us dollar. Great rum very full flavor but not overly sweet and good oak. Last would be El Pasador De Oro Rum XO about 30 to 40 should be in a white box very addicting nose and the taste fantastic so much going on there fruits Carmel vanilla and oak goes smooth and you will love sniffing this rum.

    Not a rum drinker previously, but recently returned from a trip to Cuba where we drank Santiago de Cuba 11 year almost exclusively. I'm a rum drinker now! Upon returning home, I've compared it to Appleton Estate 12 year and Diplomatico. The Diplomatico comes close but falls short. The Appleton Estate not even close. If you get the chance to try Cuban rum, take it!

      Cuban Rum is so different than others, smooth like silk. Havana Club is the export, but there are many domestic brands. Ron Mulata Is very popular on the island and Cosario is another fine mixing rum. Whenever I am overseas, I always look for Cuban Rums to bring home

      Can't go wrong with Cuban rums for sipping. Though as a Jamaican (albeit a prideful one) if you do wanna delve into more Jamaican rums I'd say most of the Hampden distillery products are very good (specifically Trelawny Endemic Birds series or HPDN Book Edition) Smith and Cross is another good one (especially for whiskey sippers). But for Appleton Estate and Plantation it's kind of hit or miss. The AE 15 year aged Black River casks are pretty decent, but the older 21 yr and up are really what you want if you can find them. I haven't tried them yet, but I've also been told some SE Asian and Polynesian rums are very good for sipping: Don Papa from the Philippines and Manawa from Fiji.

    I explored rum a few years ago and had some good fun learning about the different kinds (English, French, Spanish traditions) and made some poor purchases before I found out about the lack of "rules" in this world of spirits. At the end of the day I settled on Foursquare rums as my preference because Richard Seale is a distiller who keeps it real and the exceptional cask series is awesome. And I have also discovered how well rum goes with a Padron...Come to think of it its time for both right now! Dig the leaf and barrel. Cheers.

Foursquare for sure, Ron Zacapa XO as mentioned above, Don Q Gran Anejo is a nice dry rum that would go well with your cigars, and Havana club Maestro from Cuba. You do have to get the last one while out of the country. I've been exploring all of these delicious spirits for the last 5 or so years. Smith and Cross is the most high-falutin' one I've tried so far, though.

    El Dorado 12 year is a good intro to sipping rums for whiskey drinkers. I've started going down the rabbit hole and it turns out I might be first and foremost an aged rum fan. That bottle of Diplomatico is infamous in rum circles - I believe it was their first rum, and they added the sugar and coloring to get by until their barrels aged, but it took off so fast that the demand has never tapered off. The heavy sugar smoothes out the rough edges that unaged rums have to make them more appealing neat.
    Almost all rums in the French tradition have sugar added (called "dossage"), but it's typically a very small amount - the rum equivalent of the chef finishing off a soup with a sprinkle of salt.

    Jeremy, I'm glad that you recognized your own biases! Of course you would choose FourSquare... you're a Kentuckian whiskey/bourbon drinker. It's only natural that you would pick the most bourbon-like tasting rum. Which is plain WRONG! That being said let me recognize my own biases.... I'm Nicaraguan! He he. So naturally the best rum is Flor de Caña. Naturally. If you want a bourbon-like tasting rum I would strongly recommend Flor de Caña Perfect 10 (although it's only currently available in Nicaragua) which is especially aged in bourbon barrels for... you guess it, 10 years. I also recommend trying the Flor de Caña Centenario 25 Slow Aged, winner of the 2017 Best Rum of the Year from the International Rum Conference. Now if you have a pretty penny to spend (at the tune of $1,200 to $1,600) I highly recommend the truly 30 years old Flor de Caña V Generaciones!

    Hey man, I really enjoy your videos. Take it from a Nicaraguan, you went wrong to pick the 18 years Flor de Caña. I enjoy Pussers or Prichard's Private Stock for straight sipping. Pussers uses wood pot stills, and Prichards is aged in charred oak. Both are exceptional, but different, with the the former being pure traditional rum, and the latter having some bourbon hints, and lovely buttery vanilla and caramel notes.

    You have not tried Rum until sipped a taste of Zacapa from Guatemala. It was so good when I was introduced to it, I stopped drinking whisky for like a year. Had one of it into my bottles since then.

    I just watched this because I got talked into one of those Camachos. I never smoked flavored cigars until now. Short story, you are absolutely right about the Four Square. I was able to get some 2010 at a local place for $85 and it is delicious. I found it to really open up with in a rocks glass with an ice cube in it. Lots of fabulous flavors in this stuff. Thanks for the info.

    I have all three of these, all very good (Diplomatico is quite sweet tho). By far (in my humble opinion) the best rum is El Dorado. Get yourself a bottle of El Dorado 15, it's incredible and around the price of Flor de Caña 18.

Didn't know there was such a thing as sipping rum till about 10 years ago when I was on tour doing a musical (I'm a musician) with a bunch of ex-navy guys who put me on to GOOD rum. Cheers!

    There are some Plantation Rums that I really like. They age theirs in cognac barrels. The XO 20th anniversary is really good. The Xaymaca is newer and pretty decent also. If you like it strong, the O.F.T.D is great too.

    • @jacobleyba4180
      @jacobleyba4180 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 5 year is also great, and if I don't feel like splurging on Probitas, I'll get their 3 star. Great rum for daiquiris. They do add sugar to their products, though.

    • @CorySchoolland
      @CorySchoolland 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah the 20th Anniversary is far too sweet for my tastes, and the 5 year is borderline. Xaymaca and OFTD are fantastic. But Plantation is also fighting against the type of strong identity protection enjoyed by Bourbon and Scotch, for Barbados and Jamaica, so that's turned a lot of people (myself included) off the brand.

  • @Old_SnakeTwitch
    @Old_SnakeTwitch 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great vid, you might like Appleton Estate. No sugar, their age statements are minimum age, they use jack daniel's casks, and they use a massive on site natural limestone water creek for their water just like JD

    You should try Guatamalan rum. There is only one (1) distillery there, and they craft Zacapa and Botran. And, they use the solera method of aging, and their barrels are stored at a facility that is a mile above sea level. A superior product.

    On the affordable range, you should add in Plantation XO and Zafra 21. Both are consistently rated as two of the better rums under $100. If you want to go higher end, then Centenario 30 and Zafra 30 are good choices. They range between $150 to $200 per bottle. These give some contrast of the sweeter and less sweet rums as well.

      I find sugar added & especially color isn't an authentic rum imo. A spicy rum on the other hand is still a real rum imo, but theoretically even that isn't "rum" anymore but a spirit drink then.
