In this episode, we show how to measure the piston protrusion in order to determine the head gasket thickness of a TDV6 Land Rover Discovery 3 engine. In this video we show how to measure the piston protrusion in accordance with the Ford specification. We also show how to make such a measuring tool and how to select the correct head gasket thickness.

When I was an apprentice we called this type of meticulous engine build "blue printing" when the engine was built to a much tighter tolerance than normal engines, this was done for trucks going out on demonstration to potential fleet buyers, now "blueprinting" has lost its meaning, but glad to see you are keeping up the old school standard, so well done.

A day late, but Merry Christmas. I could sit and watch Christian machine parts all day. You could start a business machining high quality precision tools for us DIY guys. Why buy Chinese when we can buy LRTime tools. lol. Vera, put those boys to work and make them fetch the wood for you.

You use dial gauge very good well made, I used edge of steel rule and feeler gauge to check old td5 engine 😂 seemed to work 😬

Amazing🙂👍 That band saw just boggles the mind. You just cut the band, make that slot and weld it back together again a couple of times😳👍. Wonder If the compression ratio is affected by choosing gasket no. 2 compared to gasket no.3?

Happy New Year, Vera & Christian. Excellent video as usual. What a huge effort to make this special once in the lifetime tool, including cutting your band saw blade twice for this slot. I just wonder if you could just used a precision steel ruler on top of the piston and then measured the gap with a feeler gauge. You should get a measurement to 0.05mm, good enough for this job. If you simply fit the #3 head gasket, no damage will happen, only compression will be slightly lower. But it's a turbo, so no problem. But this wouldn't be the Christian & Vera way and way less entertaining. 🙂 Greetings from the What Cruiser country.
Hello Alex, I ended up installing a no. 3 gasket. I made the tool for fun becaue I had nothing else to do. So far, the engine still runs. Christian

You guys are awesome. :) That's really a beautifully made gauge mount block Christian - cool technique to cut the bandsaw blade. Which bandsaw brand is it, out of interest?. Hey - it might be interesting to see how repeatable a cheap British 3D printed ripoff of such a quality German tool would be ;) ...especially considering the limited use it's ever likely to received (though maybe not in your case ;). If you care to publish a drawing with dimensions, I can whip it up in Onshape and share a link for anyone to download, print and try.

The LR3 has multiple temp sensors: ambient outside (front), coolant, oil sump, diesel return, intake air temp and interior temp. I suggest to read the engine controls and sensor section of the LR3 workshop manual. You find it at disco3.co.uk. Christian

I wish I was my age but had your skills. I think my Disco 4 head gasket is failing. My coolant is being blown out of the expansion tank due to some high pressure in the system. I have heard changing the head gasket is a nightmare on these cars. Oddly enough though, the car does not overheat but will show a “low coolant level” warning but the coolant never completely runs out

When you torque the heads down, that will compress the gaskets - I suppose the thickness dimension of the gaskets are based on compressed thickness at recommended head bolt torque settings and procedure?

Ich finde Euch klasse - eine Frage habe ich als Besitzer eines Discovery4 mit mittlerweile neuem Motor. Könnt Ihr mir sagen wie ich an die Anleitung komme die ihr auf dem Rechner hattet bei der Reparatur des Ölsensors der schon ab Werk nicht richtig eingebaut war. Über Hilfe würde ich mich freuen. Are you referring to the crossover pipe behind/above the engine? If so, it can be removed with the engine in place from below. The procedure is in the workshop manual. It’s a difficulty of 11 on a scale of 10. There are some points of no return if something breaks. The exhaust bolts/studs of the turbo or of the crossover pipe connection to the manifold. There are some bolts so difficult to reach that you want to shredder the car in pieces. Christian

If Ford had paid as much attention to making a good crankshaft as they did to gasket thickness you wouldn't have had to make that High Quality Instrument, because the engine wouldn't have needed a rebuild :)

Ich hätte jetzt Mal eine Frage: Ich bin ein sehr großer LandRover Fan und für mich würde kein anderer Geländewagen in Frage kommen. Mein erster Landi war ein Disco 2 TD5, mein absoluter Favorit ist der Disco 3. Eigentlich wollte ich mir damals einen 4er kaufen aber habe so viel negatives darüber gehört (z.B Kurbelwellenbrüche, TwinTurbo Schäden, uvm.) das ich mich dann für einen 3er entschieden habe.... Aber nicht irgendeinen, sondern einen aus 2005 ohne Rußpartikelfilter und Euro3 gelb. Ich würde dieses Fahrzeug gegen keinen 4er tauschen. Jetzt ist die Frage warum!? Meiner Meinung nach sind die ganzen Euro4er mit Rußpartikelfilter zum Tode verurteilt, selten das diese Fahrzeuge die 200.000 km auf dem Tacho erreichen ohne größeren Schaden. Wenn man Spaßhalber im Netz Mal schaut findet man sogut wie nur Fahrzeuge der ersten Generation mit teilweise um die 500.000 km Laufleistung und Top Zustand. Ich habe sogar einen mit 650.000 km ohne Beschädigungen gefunden, welcher noch weiter verkauft wurde 😅. Wäre Mal cool zu hören was ihr von meiner Theorie haltet. Viele Lieben Grüße und macht weiter so!
Hallo, erst mal schön das dir unsere Videos gefallen. Wir können in unserer Gegend, Rhein-Main Gebiet und Darmstadt natürlich kein Auto mit Gelber Plakette fahren. Das hatten wir an meinem Freelander und ging gar nicht. Allerdings ist mein Disco 3 noch einer ohne original DPF, der wurde vom Vorbesitzer nachgerüsted. Wir wohnen im Rhein-Main Gebiet, hier kann man natürlich kein Fahrzeug mit Gleber Plakette fahren, wir hatten es probiert mit meinem Freelander, ging aber nicht. Christian muss täglich nach Darmstadt und auch ich muss in der Lage sein überall hinzufahren. Wir habe ja auch schon für Diesel gesperrte Straßen. Aber dadurch das wir auf dem Land, mit riesigem Grundstück und Holzmachen und was nicht, wohnen, brauchen wir einen Allrad. Und komm jetzt nicht mit einem cityhopper für die Arbeit, darauf haben wir keine Lust.😅😉 TH-cam ist nur unser Hobby. Aber die Videos kosten so viel Geld in Teile, und Aufwand, gerade beim editieren das sich das schon irgendwann rentieren muss. Da kommt ja von TH-cam kaum Geld rüber, deshalb haben wir auch mit Patreon angefangen. Auf Deutsch werden wir keine Videos machen, das schauen sich keine 500 Leute an, wir sind ja hier in Deutschland und unser Kontent dreht sich um Geländewagen, passt ja leider nicht so ganz. Die meisten verstehen aber gut genug Englisch das sie uns folgen können. Ich stehe im regen Kontakt mit den meisten. Aber du siehst ja wie viele Klicks der Altblech-Schrauber bekommt mit seinem Disco 3 Kontent. Der macht ja nur Deutsche Videos und die sind informativ. Und ein einziges Video was keine Klicks bekommt ruiniert dir so den TH-cam Algorythmus das die nächsten 2 bis 3 Videos darunter leiden.... Es gibt natürlich einige Fahrzeuge die so viele Km haben, wir planen unseren auch so lange zu fahren. Aber ein Auto besteht ja nicht nur aus einer Kurbelwelle, die nicht gerissen ist. Unser Plan ist es dieses Jahr einen Land Rover mit Motorschaden zu kaufen und als Projekt zu reparieren. Mal sehen was sich da ergibt. Viele Grüße Vera
Danke für eure Antwort. Mit der gelben Plakette habt ihr natürlich vollkommen Recht. Ich wohne im Allgäu, grenznah zu Österreich und bin ansonsten sehr viel im Wald oder Offroad unterwegs (vor allem in Griechenland). Das mit den Videos macht natürlich viel Sinn ... Und ihr habt Recht, dass man das meiste auch sehr gut versteht (bis auf manche spezifischen Begriffe). Auf das Video mit dem Motorschaden bin ich natürlich sehr gespannt. Ihr seid auf jeden Fall Klasse, macht weiter so!

Did you compare the two measuring methods? How incorrect would Christian's first method have been?
The first gauge did not produce repeatable readings. The stress level back then was just too much for me to allow anything that could potentially cause the pistons to crash and the engine to die during the start up. 😅👍 🙋♀️ Vera
