If only you could some how feel how much your efforts make a big impact in our problem solving, I bet you will have wings 😄.
In some cases where I know the stuff and procedures, I always feel happy to relearn the things from you.
    Much appreciated as always.

Every great video starts with an innuendo. Happy new year Mike.

I have a Mitotoyo height gauge where, when you press the button to zero it, it takes about 5 seconds before it zeroes.
I thought this was a bit odd until the first time I used it properly. ;-)

This one is quite accurate - I bought one of those snake type mag mounts and sent it right back - they move all over the place!

@@BritannicaRestorations a sled gauge is much easier to use, it is just a flat machined bar that holds a dial gauge which you then zero to the deck and then slide (or sled) across onto the piston when it is at TDC.

Mike, would it be acceptable to machine the piston crowns if for some reason the block had been too vigorously decked, say to repair some severe damage to the sealing surface, if there was no possibility of getting a replacement block and as a last resort.

Ok, I'm not Mike. Within reason there shouldn't be a problem, there is a lot of meat in the crown. If i was doing my own engine I'd do it, but for a customer?? Dunno.

@@greebo7857 I was considering doing this to a friend's TDI engine where the block surface has severe corrosion issues and no reasonable replacement engine block available.
I figure the pistons and bores are still ok and we have more time than money available to do the job.

In the old days they used to do this - they called them pre topped pistons
It was a bit of a faff about but there was only one gasket size available

Would measuring the pistons show any discrepancies, would conrod bearings thickness, seating, shaft straightness etc, a bit but not a lot!

    • @BritannicaRestorations
      @BritannicaRestorations  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The big end bearings will be uniform - however fitting the little end bushes can be slightly out when reaming due to the oil ways in the top of the bush end up with less material to cut, so if the rods are not clamped in a jig and reamed, then the piston heights can vary

I do not get why you took the piston rings off ok its a bit harder to move the piston up and down but at least the rings would have held the piston in the proper place but what do I now.

I wanted to show in a later video how to measure bore wear and you need to put the pistons in upside down

Think we take reliability and longevity for granted these days . Spare a thought , however, for my friend who’s 70,000 mile Isuzu has just thrown a leg out of bed .😳

Piston rock counts for a lot of piston height
