Personally my headcannon for Mr. and Mrs. Blight's personalities is that Mrs. Blight is obsessed with status while Mr. Blight is obsessed with power and they have to respect than other's obsession to maintain their family's influence. Mr. Blight's power keeps them above the other high society families while Mrs. Blight maintains their image and prestige. I also get the sneaking suspicion Mr. Blight is the current head of the Abomination coven which is yet another reason Amity is in that track. Their kids are color-coordinated because Mrs. Blight wants it while Mr. Blight could care less since it doesn't strengthen or weaken them so he let's Mrs. Blight do as she wishes. Edric and Emira are allowed to run amok because they're both naturally talented and everyone knows their powerful, despite them not going out of their way to try to make a name for themselves or make high society connections like Amity training under Lilith and being associated with Skara and Boscha and even being miscreants which would normally reflect badly on a prestigious family like the Blights. This is because Mr. Blight is satisfied with their power and doesn't want Mrs. Blight doing anything to impede that prowess so they get free reign in that regard while Amity has all the attention of both Blight parents for not being as talented and needing to live up to high society standards as a result. Amity was allowed to have Willow as a friend for a while because Mr. Blight wanted to see if she'd become powerful despite Willow not being of high status. When Willow didn't develop her powers right away, they then decided to make Amity cut ties and go the social status route instead. Tl;dr the Blight parents have an equal relationship built around power and status and expect their children to exemplify at least one of these aspects. He's not submissive to Mrs. Blight but also does not care if her actions scar their children as long as their magical prowess is preserved. And if they meet or learn of Luz, there is a good chance she might get the favor of Mr. Blight (whether she wants it or not considering how he treats Amity). Of course this is all just headcanon lol.
I can see that being the case. Mr. Blight respects power, Mrs. Blight prestige, and Amity hard work. That leaves the twins respecting fun, left to their own devices because they're just so good at what they do.
If Mrs. Blight picks out Ed an Em's outfits it adds another layer to Em's fear of being stuck with her brother forever. Not being able to express her individuality, but being made to fit better into the role of twin sister. Love your videos!
This could also be a reason why Ed is worried about being alone forever because this same action has the opposite affect on him. He feels like that he has a place with his mom/family choosing things for him and being there with him. If they suddenly stop then he might not be able to cope and might freak out.
I think the thing that REALLY pisses me off about the Blight parents is how they seem to be above the law. If they can stop Willow from being admitted to Hexside, they can probably get away with all sorts of things. It's like how Umbridge basically tortured Harry and no one in Hogwarts could do anything about it.

i REALLY believe that Mr. Blight isn’t a bad parent imagine him seeing Amity for the first time and realizing she has his hair color while the twins had his wife’s color. Maybe he is especially close with Amity and he wants to be a good parent but his wife is forcing/ blackmailing him into acting like that. maybe she told him she was going to something horrible to her. basically i am saying that i REALLY hope he isn’t bad. (also Dana did say he was a lot of fun to write so that gives me hope-)
I don't think he is a good parent or close to Amity, but from the way Dana framed the fact that Amity dyes her hair because of Mrs. Blight and how many times she mentioned how Mr. Blight was really interesting/fun to write, I really have high hope he is more then just a typical bad parent.
I suppose so but I want to see how it turns out. Granted the blights seem unlikable and rather abusive to their kids (or one of them), I'd like to see more layers to them. Sometimes parents do things cuz they believe it's best n it was probably how they were also raised, so growing up with similar rules n mentality is likely to carry on to the next generation. Because the Blight family is so popular, it's safe to assume that it has been that way for generations along with some outdated beliefs n traditions. Not to excuse the parents negative influence on their kids, but it helps to explore the concept of the toxic family circle n how it's probably more complex than just picking one or two people to blame. So I'm interested to see how Dana portrays. Also cuz I want to see more than just a bad parent evil parent dynamic all the time. I want to see a different take on the matter maybe a grey area with the blights character like Malory from Archer. No doubt she wasn't the best mum, but u can still see that she cared for Sterling.....in her own way n was still a fun character
@@kmmk5022 I'm not very invested on the lore of the show, but I am speculating a complex interaction or maybe a confrontation between Amity n Lilith due to their former relationship as student n mentor. After the finale fiasco, it's safe to say that Lilith's reputation n status plummeted n she'll have to go into hiding with Eda leaving Amity confused n probably hurt, while her parents would probably not even want their daughter associating with her anymore. But that may not stop Amity cuz she would still interact with Lillith via Luz n Eda. There's also going to be a clash of ideals between Amity n Luz, especially Amity n her view of the Emperor's coven. I won't be surprised that she joins Luz's side eventually, but that is where her parents come to play
Dana said in the reddit AMA that Boscha and Amity's moms probably had a childhood rivalry that they kept going by trying to one up each other with their kids accomplishments
If you look you see that only main background characters (Parents) can be seen in the background of the scene. If you watch closely you can see two girls who are POSSIBLY boschas parents. They both look like her (3 eyes, pink hair)
I dream about The Owl House more often than most people probably do. Just the other night I had this dream about an alternate version of Young Blood, Old Souls where at the end Luz fought Emperor Belos hanging off that tall stage thing that they were gonna petrify Eda on in the Conformitorium and defeated him, but she went back to the Human Realm, Eda and some other characters following her into her house, which her mom didn't seem phased by. Luz talked to her mom, who seemed aware of the Demon Realm and might've outright said so, on their porch, which was sorta reddish orange, and it had little symbols all over it that looked like glyphs, and Luz's mom tapped one and it glowed, and then all the glyphs started zapping electricity, and she might've drawn a yellow spell circle in the air. They went inside and the principal from the first episode was there because Luz's mom was apparently dating him, but Luz realized that it was just Emperor Belos disguised as the principal, and she'd have to live with him. I'm sure you were all just dying to hear that.
I'm not sad, what with rechecking the Arkham games, rereading the Sherlock Holmes books, and waiting for Star Wars: Squadrons and The Mandalorian Season 2. Edit as of October 1, 2020: Well, I finished Arkham Asylum, City, Origins, and Knight, I'm already at the Mazarin Stone case, and it won't be long before I can either be impressed and/or disappointed by Squadrons and The Mandalorian S2.
I hope at least one of them doesn’t change their ways whether it be both or just Mrs. Blight. If you keep giving characters that are linked to each other redemption arcs then it’s just a never ending cycle of redemption. And while I do think Amity had an amazing redemption arc I don’t know if I wanna see a cycle of that through the family past the twins. Sometimes parents are just jerks naturally and are too stubborn to change their ways. I can’t wait to see the Blight parents but I also hope Willow is involved somehow because I want my girl to get the attention she deserves dang it!!! 🤣💙💖 one more thing I wonder if Amity will eventually get rid of the green dye once she strays far enough from her parents’ control. That would be some cool symbolism.
I’d actually like to see the if the Blights are heads of both the Abomination and Oracle covens, since thats what their tracks were. I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s how they have connections to Lilith
Ava while i don’t think the northwest’s were just plot devices, i do agree that pacifica wasn’t as important to our main characters but she was influenced by her parents with a lot of pressure on her. still love her and i think she had a lovely redemption💞

I didn't need her to date Dipper or anything like that, but I really wish they had done more with her character instead of basically writing her out of the show. I feel like Amity's story took inspiration from Pacifica, but with a ton more development and relevance to the MC. She's everything that I wanted to see out of Pacifica and more. And we're only one season in; I can't wait to see where her storyline will go from here.
Well the northwest’s are mostly your typical one dimensional rich parents. The blights have more layers to them, which is why there’s more attention on them.
Also Luz saying "It doesn't come naturally, like it does to you..." must have resonated with Amity and made her sympathetic towards Luz. Because even if she is naturally magical, Ed and Em are more naturally talented, so Amity had to work harder to get even close to their level, just how Luz has to work harder to get even close to other witches's levels. So I guess Amity related to her in that scene. It's just a theory tho.
One thing I really liked about the flashbacks are just how bleak Amity's are compared to Willows once they're fixed. Not only is Amity the only one in colour, but even her colours are very flat, having a slight grey tint to it compared to the memories of both Willow and Lilith, not to forget the rest of the show. This is how Amity remembers her parents, like they drain the very colour and joy from the room.
Thanks for this video. All the hints at Amity's home life are a huge part of what made her such a compelling character for me. My heart broke a little at the diary scene where she went "I called my teacher Mom again" cause that's just such a familiar trope that's always played for laughs and yet always signals parental disconnect. Happy to see so much appreciation for the writing in this show.
This reminds me of what it may have been like for people who initially watched ATLA back in 2007 when learning about Ozai. Same with White Diamond never being mentioned but only having glimpses of her being seen until she debuted
I actually have a theory that ms blight was the one who is the more abusive in the relationship and more controlling i look at their uniforms and ms.blights uniform back them was like amity they are both on the abomination tract so i think ms blight wants to control her daughter to become like her,mr.blight seems to focus more on his work than their family because of his strict voice and appearance which could mean he would focus on other things and when dealing on the family he would just tell them off or usually follow ms.blight orders but its just my theory
There is a saying that "the apple doesn't fall far from the tree" since Amity has a soft side I think she got that from her father since the mother did most of the lecturing on the episode 'understanding willow' and if you see in the flash back on the episode 'young blood old souls' there faces are very different, mrs. blight's face was looking very interested in the fight mr. blight's face was the opposite, I think this has something to do with arranged marriage if my theory is correct Mr and Mrs blight's parents kind of forced them into an arranged marriage since it was very common for two powerful families to connect each other for the sake of power In conclusion: Mr blight's the soft parent :>

So I say that they probably made Amity join it because they are convinced that she'll have more opportunities and be the most successful and powerful if her hard work pays off.
Honestly, I feel like Mrs Blight is the powerful of the two in the relationship. If you look back in the flashback Mr Blight is scruffy and slouched over, whereas Mrs Blight is sat up straight and neat indicating that she is probably of a far better family than he is. I also think this because Amity has Mr Blights hair colour, however, Mrs Blight forces her to dye it or dyes it for her (why shouldn’t Amity be proud of being like her father looks wise??) and in Understanding Willow, never once is Mr Blight the leader of the conversation, nor does he begin any sentences with “I”. They are all started with “we”, so we can assume that both of them had a say in the decision. However, going back to my first point, we can assume that Me Blight is just a messy bastard with bad posture, or he is from a not so well off family but is powerful enough to associate with Mr Blight, and I feel like this would be a big factor in their relationship. Both of them are obviously powerful, however, if he really is from a family that just doesn’t give a hoot, Mrs Blight would clearly be far more superior in the social hierarchy of witches since she is higher up in society, and marry Mr Blight would have seemed like a step in the RIGHT direction, because he is powerful, after all”Blights only associate with the most powerful of witches”.It should also be safe to assume that since Mrs Blight and Boschas mom had a rivalry, that Mrs Blight would obviously arrange to have her rivals daughter be Amity’s “friend”, to carry on the rivalry, again indicating that she may have had more of a say than Mr Blight did in the choice of Amity’s friend. Also would personally like to see Mr Blight get a slight redemption arc, even if it’s just a small but reassuring hand on the shoulder when she comes out (bitch has gotta tell them she’s gay at some point seriously). For a possibly mentally abusive character like him, I don’t think he should get some big redemption arc seeing as you know, it’s not like he was Lilith who cursed her sister ACCIDENTALLY (because she says she thought it would only take away Edas powers for a day) he is still a shitbag who is letting his daughter get abused mentally and is even possibly partaking in that abuse. Anyway my thumbs hurt but seriously if their names aren’t Karen and Chad I’m going to stab myself 27 times.

One thing I really liked is that Amity says "You think it's so easy but I have been working my whole life to get to the top" Which heavily implies A, all the pressure from her parents, and B, that Amity has WORKED to become one of the top students in the whole school (and as she was chosen to be Grom Queen perhaps even THE BEST student in the school). It's not from being "Born better" or what the high class Blights probably like to say they are. She has WORKED HARD, and she continues to work hard. It doesn't all come easily for her, she has pressure and has to work to be the best. And in "Adventures in the Elements" we can see her trying to beat her siblings score, which they tease her saying that it's not possible and that she still has to use a "training wand" to learn the spell. So we see Amity, who's ""supposed to be"" endlessly talented and better, struggle. I just think it's such a good characterization that Amity's greatest power isn't ""talent she's born with"", it's how hard she works. Which you can compare to Willow and how she was a "late bloomer" but now, as Luz said, "a great bloomer". That Willow has problems with other forms of magic but either seems to be born with a talent for plant magic or once again has worked to be that good. I just think it's very interesting and great writing that the "super talented Miss Perfect" probably doesn't have it as easy as people might think, that it's not ""talent"" that makes her good but the fact that she works SO HARD. Sorry this is pretty much what you said, I wrote this before I watched the whole video cause I got excited xD
I'm not sure if its significant but you realize in the youth picture of Ms. and Mr. Blight that she's smiling and he's not. I feel like this is worth mention because it's been suggested that Ms. Blights smug smile, along with the fact that the Blight family symbol appeared on the door portal Lilith used, is a sign that they might have had a secret hand behind the curse. Possibly in tricking Lilith into thinking it was less dangerous than it was. If this really is a sign that she's happy about the events, but that he does not care, you go to wonder if he really is quite as obsessed with status as hear.
Honestly, I wasn't even surprised that they're stuck up rich parents who are mean to their kids; been there, done that a couple of times. But denying said child a friendship just because it's not beneficial... that's a whole new level.
What I think a lot of people won't realize that Edric and Emira are also likely under the same pressures that Amity is. While they get more leniency, also think: They're older. They tend to act out more, which is a sign that they want attention of any kind, possibly because their parents focus more on work or on their covens rather than on their children, who are expected to be great and do great things, given their status. Acting out by causing disruptions is one of the most notable things that happens when a child is neglected or abused at home -- Or simply doesn't *like* being at home. While their plans to spread Amity's diary around the school is harsh and unacceptable, I think that people need to keep in mind that they're also under pressure. While Amity is getting more pressure on her, that means the attention is taken off the twins. They also have their own fears, expressed in the Grom Episode: Emira is afraid of being stuck with him forever, which could be wanting to express individuality, and Edric is scared of being alone (without his twin) forever, which could be him just not having anyone else to turn to.
i really like the theory that mrs. Blight was the one who purposefully misinformed lilith on what the curse would do to eda, idk why it just seems to plausible i believe it was the roundtable that came up with that

I think that Emira is more responsible than Edric because in the Blight family, women take more responsibility. I also think that maybe Mrs. Blight was the original Blight because she’s regarded more highly, and everyone wants to take on the Blight name. Plus, Mrs. Blight gives more of her features to her children than Mr. Blight, including green hair, golden eyes, pale skin, and her hair line. And I think that green hair might be a blight trade mark, and that’s why she wanted Amity to dye her hair. Just Radom theories I came up with on the spot.

One thing I have been confused about is that there are other covens besides the main ones, like the tiny cat coven of the bakeing coven. What do they restrict there members to? Bakeing magic? Cat magic? I don't get it.
Instead of covens the schools have tracks, one track for each coven besides the Emperor's coven, and the detention coven, so I don't see why the other schools will have different tracks
First of all,, man I can’t wait for season 2, I’m so excited to know more about the Blight family (and why Amity’s nickname is Mittens, according to the stream) I personally think that Mr Blight is not as bad as he lets on, it’s just the feeling I get. My feeling is that he’s just being roped into that kind of behavior towards Amity by Mrs Blight. I’m not saying he’s a good parent at all, he was equally as abusive as Mrs Blight when it came to cutting ties with Willow, but I feel like there is especially more to him. Also, the thing about the Blight parents playing favorites does make sense especially with Mrs Blight since Ed and Em both got her natural hair color,,
Hmm considering Dana's choice of words about Mr.Blight, I get the feeling Amity may get her dorky or more understanding side from her father whilst her mother tried to make Amity a carbon copy of herself overshadowing her husband's traits in their daughter till she met Luz and began to open up. I mean seriously, Ed an Em are hardcore jokers/pranksters, and they probably didn't get that trait from their mother, who seems uptight, prim and proper obsessed.
I just noticed this Whenever Amity is with Boscha,Skara and their friends she always a stern look on her face indicating that she’s not happy being around them but now that Amity is friends with Luz,Willow and Gus she’s seen smiling indicating that she is finally being with friends who care about her and not forced into a friendship
I would rather see how Dana plays out the Blights parents. Since in her ama they could be good or bad for the protagonists. So I am going to wait and see before disliking them
My personal prediction (which I got from a dream last night): What if Mr. Blight (I'm just call him Viren, because he kinda looks like Viren) is the bully that stole Lily's lunch money in the school records. The one that Eda was will to release Abomination's on then had to work together to clean up the mess. Yeah, they all got in trouble, but I think Viren could've gained some-sort of respect for Eda. And maybe a crush. Plus maybe he heard about how the sisters want to join the Emperor's Coven and thinks that if he and Eda were to get together in the future, the Blight family would be even more powerful than it is. Anyway, maybe Mrs. Blight (who I'm just gonna call Karen) was jealous that Viren had eyes for Eda and wanted to take her out of the picture. She learned that there was only one spot left to join the Emperor's Coven and played on Lily's insecurities to make her curse her sister. (I'm basing this off how Karen had a "all according to plan" look on her face during the flashback.) And obviously, since Lily had no interest in Viren, he ended up with Karen. The only thing that doesn't make this work is that Viren in the flashback had a bored look on his face; but that could be that he was disappointed there was no fight.
I have a theory that amity’s mom might be “Good witch Azura” , who’s referenced in the first few episodes as a book character, but what is if was based on someone real? It would be an interesting plot twist, and they both share the same hairstyle and color.
I think we hate Ms and Mr Blight so much because for now, they are just Amity's parents, but in season 2 I hope we can see a different perspective and a bigger role than just being parents. Since Dana said that Mr Blighy is an interesting character , I bet we'll see more about him, and how that can affect Luz in a good or a bad way
I definitely agree with you about Mrs. Blight being the one who calls the shots in the family/relationship. One thing that I don’t think I’ve seen anyone talk about that is potentially related to this idea is how they appear in YBOS. Mrs. Blight is far more expressive in that one image, very clearly having a smug evil smile, while Mr. Blight looks almost apathetic and deadpan and I think this could be an indicator of how their characters will appear when they’re officially introduced. Perhaps Mr. Blight is in most cases a much less commanding force in the family and more of an enabler for his much more assertive wife.
It seems most people are gravitating toward the idea that Mrs. Blight is the political schemer, focused on social standing and manipulation of others, while Mr. Blight is generally okay with a wider variety of behavior so long as a person is powerful. It would explain why Ed and Em have free reign to goof off, and why Mr. Blight seemed bored with the non-battle between Lilith and Eda.
I wonder if now with Willow having grown into her power and becoming a really powerful witch, Mr and Mrs Blight will be like "Oh sure you can hang out with her now", which I feel would be really upsetting for both Amity and Willow. That they literally give Amity permission to see her childhood BEST FRIEND because they now think Willow is "good enough". It would just be messed up. The whole thing is messed up.
I can already see a lot of seeds as to why Mr. Blight may be fun to write. I could see him taking his wife dyeing the hair of the one kid who's hair resembles his personally. his bored and disinterested expression as teen had a LOT of personality for a brief background still. And what if he makes the cute lunches?
Something about Em and Ed, they could be trouble-makers and cut class, as a way to deal with the pressure of the parent, that we don't see them under such pressure or expectations donsn't mean they didin't suffer it. Especialy now that we know that Mrs. Blight even chose their clothing. Other thing is we know the people they invitated to prom did not make it, maybe, and just maybe, that could be related to their parents. We also know they are part of the ilusion track and they could have pick up that track as a way to show something they are not, they know how to put a false image of themself to their parents (and others).
I'm wondering if Lilith is training Amity not so much because she's the best of the best of her generation but because of family connections. If those two kids in the flashback are the Blights, and in all likelihood they are, then they attended school with Lilith. They might of been "friends" with her back then, or at least glomped onto her once she made it into the emperor's coven. Coupled with their clear wealth and connections, they likely pulled some strings to arrange it. Granted Amity has a certain level of natural talent and skill, which likely helped it, but it could be another thing her mother is doing to one up Boscha's mother, which is why she is doing this for Amity rather then the twins. We actually don't see much of Lilith being a mentor to Amity. It was only in her debut episode that those two had any interaction and Lilith just used her as a show piece and pawn in her rivalry with her sister. Most of her screen time has been trying to bring in/one up her sister or a side quest for the emperor. I'm looking forward to seeing Lilith and Amity interact in season 2 after so much of them has changed.
For the lunch box, I’m sorry if I’m stupid, but I also think they cute lunch box could be a way that Mrs. Blight controls amity. Since the lunch box is so cute and kid like, it could be way to keep amity thinking she’s a baby and keeping her in line. As it seems they would want to control her, it would make sense that they want her to think she is powerful. I’m sorry if I’m dumb but I like this theory I case up with. C:
I think, Mr Blight is not as bad as he seems. Neither the shadow nor in the flashback is he smiling, while Mrs Blight is smiling in an unpleasant way in both scenes. Probably, Amity has to work harder than her siblings because she comes after her father and hasn't got the innate talent. Also, in the shadow scene, Mr Blight is merely following Mrs Blight's lead, not initiating the threat. So, either, the Blight family is not inherently that bad, which might be seen when Amity's grandparents from the Blight side of the family show up, or her father wasn't a Blight and he took his wife's name when they married. Personally, I believe, the mother was not a born Blight and the father was made to marry her due to politics, either because the mother's family held great influence as well or because the mother showed extraordinary aptitude for magic and the Blights wanted to get an extraordinarily talented witch under their banner. Mrs Blight's smile indicates that she was happy (or at the very least content) with the situation. either she had genuine affection for Mr Blight (unlikely, giving her personality) or a political match making suited her own personal ambitions, she was not pressured by her own parents. This might also be the root of the rivalry between Mrs Blight and Bosha's mother. Maybe Bosha's mother also wanted to marry into the Blight family, either due to pressure from her parents, personal ambition or genuine affection for Mr Blight.
The way that the Blights are written is very similar to Firelord Ozai in TLA. We only know to hate them through their actions, but at the same time, that is all we need to know. That being said, it would be an interesting twist if they were more nuanced then just "bad, snooty parents"
Amity’s mom is going to be the new villain, she’s the one in the owl mask and her name will be Athena Blight, I’m probably wrong but if she does have an owl motif then she must be named Athena
My theory is that mr blight is turning a blind eye but throughout the season the guilt of what he’s allowing will give way and he’ll betray his wife and help his daughter and her friends
What if Boscha's mother went against Amity's mother to join the emperor's coven and Mrs. Blight lost so that's why she is pressuring Amity to join the coven and is getting taught by the leader of the coven. I noticed that in Lilith's flashback, both Alador and Odalia were wearing Abomination track uniforms (though Odalia is much less obvious, the shadow is darkening the magenta color) Initially I thought one of them would have been in illusions due to the twins being in illusions, but apparently not. This leads to the conclusion that they are playing favorites because the twins got to choose what they wanted, unlike Amity who _coincidentally_ has the same track as her parents. I think that since Em and Ed had strong magic and had much skill, to the delight of their parents, they got placed in the track they wanted, knowing they'd be good at it. I could be wrong but these were my speculations don't mind me!

I see a lot of myself in Amity and I also see my parents in her's. It's almost scary but not uncommon. Many kid's feel immense pressure from their parents and is something I really want to see more in cartoon's.
Okay I haven't seen many people mention this but I thought it was interesting in the flashback where we see young Mr and Mrs blight you can see that they are the only students in the crowd meaning that they probably have some special connection that allows them into emperor covenant business
I get the impression that, if not both, one of the Blight parents would be more than willing to force an unbreakable oath on Luz or anyone they deem "unworthy" of being around any of their children.
TL;DR Mr. and Mrs. Blight have already had a lot of character development that we've seen from how their kids behave despite not being onscreen yet. Also, Mrs. Blight has green pubic hair.
Willows family HAS to be of higher status as well. For her to even be amitys friend to begin with. Alador and Odalia didn't like their daughter being associated with a "late bloomer".
It's said that the Blights are more complex than the Northwest. The Northwest were cruel to Pacifica simply because she had to be like them. The Blights, considering how this show highlights the toxic impact an hierarchy can have on the people, must do this because just as they were taught that consorting with the strongest ensures you a good and prosperous future, they now want their daughter to be like them believing this is the only way for her to acquire a worthy lifestyle. However, considering that they're over-zealous regarding this phylosophy of theirs, something tells me they tried to consort also with outcasts, and it almost backfired on them.
I feel like amity father will be the nicer parent, he might just go along with his wife's manipulative ways. He Might stand up to ms.blight. objecting to the way she acts, and finally, protect his daughter.
I like Amity and she's not really a bully I can't really blame her for being upset. I mean loose pretty much cheated I'd be really angry too if someone cheated.

Threw season 1 it hints that Amity's parents see Amity as the runt of the family being the weakest and most vulnerable out of there three children and in "young blood old souls" Luz takes down pretty much all of the guards in the cunformatoriom like a Bada*s and even went against the emperor without being that badly injured probably just scrapes and cuts but why was she so strong because of her anger and determination to save Eda just imagine if she was trained by mr and mrs Blight to use her anger properly she could be strong enough to kill Belose if she wanted to which is probably what they want her for and that would also explain why Amity was Grom queen maybe Edric or Emera were supposed to be Grom King or queen but when they saw the note they made it Amity so she wouldn't get in the way of there plans. what if they knew she was capable of this before she entered the Demon realm in the first place what if they were spying on her for years and on that fatal summer they planed to kidnap her but Eda beat them there first but they have a new plan a plan to get rid of Amity and replace her with Luz a plan to make Luz THE ULTIMATE BLIGHT
well I think it will play out like this there would be a day where the coven leader's would come to Hexside and I am pretty sure that the head of the abomination track is Mrs. Blight and since luz studies all magic she would be in the abomination track so maybe Mrs. Blight will bound with her maybe even train her after school hours and maybe Amity will notice and suspect something and Amity might try to distract her from training with her mom but it will fail and they will have a mentor, student relationship and Amity will half to get Lilith,Eda,Gus,Willow and King involved and maybe half to even fight Luz and then just go from there I think this would be a great episode or even a season finale.

Personally my headcannon for Mr. and Mrs. Blight's personalities is that Mrs. Blight is obsessed with status while Mr. Blight is obsessed with power and they have to respect than other's obsession to maintain their family's influence. Mr. Blight's power keeps them above the other high society families while Mrs. Blight maintains their image and prestige. I also get the sneaking suspicion Mr. Blight is the current head of the Abomination coven which is yet another reason Amity is in that track.
Their kids are color-coordinated because Mrs. Blight wants it while Mr. Blight could care less since it doesn't strengthen or weaken them so he let's Mrs. Blight do as she wishes.
Edric and Emira are allowed to run amok because they're both naturally talented and everyone knows their powerful, despite them not going out of their way to try to make a name for themselves or make high society connections like Amity training under Lilith and being associated with Skara and Boscha and even being miscreants which would normally reflect badly on a prestigious family like the Blights. This is because Mr. Blight is satisfied with their power and doesn't want Mrs. Blight doing anything to impede that prowess so they get free reign in that regard while Amity has all the attention of both Blight parents for not being as talented and needing to live up to high society standards as a result.
Amity was allowed to have Willow as a friend for a while because Mr. Blight wanted to see if she'd become powerful despite Willow not being of high status. When Willow didn't develop her powers right away, they then decided to make Amity cut ties and go the social status route instead.
Tl;dr the Blight parents have an equal relationship built around power and status and expect their children to exemplify at least one of these aspects. He's not submissive to Mrs. Blight but also does not care if her actions scar their children as long as their magical prowess is preserved. And if they meet or learn of Luz, there is a good chance she might get the favor of Mr. Blight (whether she wants it or not considering how he treats Amity).
Of course this is all just headcanon lol.

This could also be a reason why Ed is worried about being alone forever because this same action has the opposite affect on him. He feels like that he has a place with his mom/family choosing things for him and being there with him. If they suddenly stop then he might not be able to cope and might freak out.

imagine him seeing Amity for the first time and realizing she has his hair color while the twins had his wife’s color. Sometimes parents do things cuz they believe it's best n it was probably how they were also raised, so growing up with similar rules n mentality is likely to carry on to the next generation. Because the Blight family is so popular, it's safe to assume that it has been that way for generations along with some outdated beliefs n traditions. Not to excuse the parents negative influence on their kids, but it helps to explore the concept of the toxic family circle n how it's probably more complex than just picking one or two people to blame. So I'm interested to see how Dana portrays. Also cuz I want to see more than just a bad parent evil parent dynamic all the time. I want to see a different take on the matter maybe a grey area with the blights character like Malory from Archer. No doubt she wasn't the best mum, but u can still see that she cared for Sterling.....in her own way n was still a fun character

@@kmmk5022 I'm not very invested on the lore of the show, but I am speculating a complex interaction or maybe a confrontation between Amity n Lilith due to their former relationship as student n mentor.
After the finale fiasco, it's safe to say that Lilith's reputation n status plummeted n she'll have to go into hiding with Eda leaving Amity confused n probably hurt, while her parents would probably not even want their daughter associating with her anymore.
But that may not stop Amity cuz she would still interact with Lillith via Luz n Eda. There's also going to be a clash of ideals between Amity n Luz, especially Amity n her view of the Emperor's coven. I won't be surprised that she joins Luz's side eventually, but that is where her parents come to play

I dream about The Owl House more often than most people probably do. Just the other night I had this dream about an alternate version of Young Blood, Old Souls where at the end Luz fought Emperor Belos hanging off that tall stage thing that they were gonna petrify Eda on in the Conformitorium and defeated him, but she went back to the Human Realm, Eda and some other characters following her into her house, which her mom didn't seem phased by. Luz talked to her mom, who seemed aware of the Demon Realm and might've outright said so, on their porch, which was sorta reddish orange, and it had little symbols all over it that looked like glyphs, and Luz's mom tapped one and it glowed, and then all the glyphs started zapping electricity, and she might've drawn a yellow spell circle in the air. They went inside and the principal from the first episode was there because Luz's mom was apparently dating him, but Luz realized that it was just Emperor Belos disguised as the principal, and she'd have to live with him.

I'm not sad, what with rechecking the Arkham games, rereading the Sherlock Holmes books, and waiting for Star Wars: Squadrons and The Mandalorian Season 2.
Edit as of October 1, 2020: Well, I finished Arkham Asylum, City, Origins, and Knight, I'm already at the Mazarin Stone case, and it won't be long before I can either be impressed and/or disappointed by Squadrons and The Mandalorian S2.
I hope at least one of them doesn’t change their ways whether it be both or just Mrs. Blight. If you keep giving characters that are linked to each other redemption arcs then it’s just a never ending cycle of redemption. And while I do think Amity had an amazing redemption arc I don’t know if I wanna see a cycle of that through the family past the twins. Sometimes parents are just jerks naturally and are too stubborn to change their ways. I can’t wait to see the Blight parents but I also hope Willow is involved somehow because I want my girl to get the attention she deserves dang it!!! 🤣💙💖 one more thing I wonder if Amity will eventually get rid of the green dye once she strays far enough from her parents’ control. That would be some cool symbolism.

I didn't need her to date Dipper or anything like that, but I really wish they had done more with her character instead of basically writing her out of the show.
I feel like Amity's story took inspiration from Pacifica, but with a ton more development and relevance to the MC. She's everything that I wanted to see out of Pacifica and more. And we're only one season in; I can't wait to see where her storyline will go from here.
Well the northwest’s are mostly your typical one dimensional rich parents. The blights have more layers to them, which is why there’s more attention on them.

Also Luz saying "It doesn't come naturally, like it does to you..." must have resonated with Amity and made her sympathetic towards Luz. Because even if she is naturally magical, Ed and Em are more naturally talented, so Amity had to work harder to get even close to their level, just how Luz has to work harder to get even close to other witches's levels. So I guess Amity related to her in that scene. It's just a theory tho.
One thing I really liked about the flashbacks are just how bleak Amity's are compared to Willows once they're fixed. Not only is Amity the only one in colour, but even her colours are very flat, having a slight grey tint to it compared to the memories of both Willow and Lilith, not to forget the rest of the show. This is how Amity remembers her parents, like they drain the very colour and joy from the room.
Given green hair and terrible parenting, I'm just gonna assume Mrs Blight has a brother named Ghetsis

Thanks for this video. All the hints at Amity's home life are a huge part of what made her such a compelling character for me. My heart broke a little at the diary scene where she went "I called my teacher Mom again" cause that's just such a familiar trope that's always played for laughs and yet always signals parental disconnect. Happy to see so much appreciation for the writing in this show.

I actually have a theory that ms blight was the one who is the more abusive in the relationship and more controlling i look at their uniforms and ms.blights uniform back them was like amity they are both on the abomination tract so i think ms blight wants to control her daughter to become like her,mr.blight seems to focus more on his work than their family because of his strict voice and appearance which could mean he would focus on other things and when dealing on the family he would just tell them off or usually follow ms.blight orders but its just my theory

There is a saying that "the apple doesn't fall far from the tree" since Amity has a soft side I think she got that from her father since the mother did most of the lecturing on the episode 'understanding willow' and if you see in the flash back on the episode 'young blood old souls' there faces are very different, mrs. blight's face was looking very interested in the fight mr. blight's face was the opposite, I think this has something to do with arranged marriage if my theory is correct Mr and Mrs blight's parents kind of forced them into an arranged marriage since it was very common for two powerful families to connect each other for the sake of power
In conclusion: Mr blight's the soft parent :>
You know, I really hope Ms.Blight says something like this in a conversation with her husband after an argument the two had with her daughter:

13:14 Let's not forget that in I Was A Teenage Abomination, Willow says that there are better opportunities in the Abomination track. So I say that they probably made Amity join it because they are convinced that she'll have more opportunities and be the most successful and powerful if her hard work pays off.
Honestly, I feel like Mrs Blight is the powerful of the two in the relationship. If you look back in the flashback Mr Blight is scruffy and slouched over, whereas Mrs Blight is sat up straight and neat indicating that she is probably of a far better family than he is. I also think this because Amity has Mr Blights hair colour, however, Mrs Blight forces her to dye it or dyes it for her (why shouldn’t Amity be proud of being like her father looks wise??) and in Understanding Willow, never once is Mr Blight the leader of the conversation, nor does he begin any sentences with “I”. They are all started with “we”, so we can assume that both of them had a say in the decision. However, going back to my first point, we can assume that Me Blight is just a messy bastard with bad posture, or he is from a not so well off family but is powerful enough to associate with Mr Blight, and I feel like this would be a big factor in their relationship. Both of them are obviously powerful, however, if he really is from a family that just doesn’t give a hoot, Mrs Blight would clearly be far more superior in the social hierarchy of witches since she is higher up in society, and marry Mr Blight would have seemed like a step in the RIGHT direction, because he is powerful, after all”Blights only associate with the most powerful of witches”.It should also be safe to assume that since Mrs Blight and Boschas mom had a rivalry, that Mrs Blight would obviously arrange to have her rivals daughter be Amity’s “friend”, to carry on the rivalry, again indicating that she may have had more of a say than Mr Blight did in the choice of Amity’s friend.
Also would personally like to see Mr Blight get a slight redemption arc, even if it’s just a small but reassuring hand on the shoulder when she comes out (bitch has gotta tell them she’s gay at some point seriously). For a possibly mentally abusive character like him, I don’t think he should get some big redemption arc seeing as you know, it’s not like he was Lilith who cursed her sister ACCIDENTALLY (because she says she thought it would only take away Edas powers for a day) he is still a shitbag who is letting his daughter get abused mentally and is even possibly partaking in that abuse.

One thing I really liked is that Amity says "You think it's so easy but I have been working my whole life to get to the top" Which heavily implies A, all the pressure from her parents,
and B, that Amity has WORKED to become one of the top students in the whole school (and as she was chosen to be Grom Queen perhaps even THE BEST student in the school). It's not from being "Born better" or what the high class Blights probably like to say they are. She has WORKED HARD, and she continues to work hard. It doesn't all come easily for her, she has pressure and has to work to be the best.
And in "Adventures in the Elements" we can see her trying to beat her siblings score, which they tease her saying that it's not possible and that she still has to use a "training wand" to learn the spell. So we see Amity, who's ""supposed to be"" endlessly talented and better, struggle.
I just think it's such a good characterization that Amity's greatest power isn't ""talent she's born with"", it's how hard she works. Which you can compare to Willow and how she was a "late bloomer" but now, as Luz said, "a great bloomer". That Willow has problems with other forms of magic but either seems to be born with a talent for plant magic or once again has worked to be that good.
I just think it's very interesting and great writing that the "super talented Miss Perfect" probably doesn't have it as easy as people might think, that it's not ""talent"" that makes her good but the fact that she works SO HARD.

I'm not sure if its significant but you realize in the youth picture of Ms. and Mr. Blight that she's smiling and he's not. I feel like this is worth mention because it's been suggested that Ms. Blights smug smile, along with the fact that the Blight family symbol appeared on the door portal Lilith used, is a sign that they might have had a secret hand behind the curse. Possibly in tricking Lilith into thinking it was less dangerous than it was. If this really is a sign that she's happy about the events, but that he does not care, you go to wonder if he really is quite as obsessed with status as hear.
Honestly, I wasn't even surprised that they're stuck up rich parents who are mean to their kids; been there, done that a couple of times. But denying said child a friendship just because it's not beneficial... that's a whole new level.
What I think a lot of people won't realize that Edric and Emira are also likely under the same pressures that Amity is. While they get more leniency, also think: They're older. They tend to act out more, which is a sign that they want attention of any kind, possibly because their parents focus more on work or on their covens rather than on their children, who are expected to be great and do great things, given their status.
Acting out by causing disruptions is one of the most notable things that happens when a child is neglected or abused at home -- Or simply doesn't *like* being at home.
While their plans to spread Amity's diary around the school is harsh and unacceptable, I think that people need to keep in mind that they're also under pressure. While Amity is getting more pressure on her, that means the attention is taken off the twins.
They also have their own fears, expressed in the Grom Episode: Emira is afraid of being stuck with him forever, which could be wanting to express individuality, and Edric is scared of being alone (without his twin) forever, which could be him just not having anyone else to turn to.

I think that Emira is more responsible than Edric because in the Blight family, women take more responsibility. I also think that maybe Mrs. Blight was the original Blight because she’s regarded more highly, and everyone wants to take on the Blight name. Plus, Mrs. Blight gives more of her features to her children than Mr. Blight, including green hair, golden eyes, pale skin, and her hair line. And I think that green hair might be a blight trade mark, and that’s why she wanted Amity to dye her hair. Just Radom theories I came up with on the spot.

First of all,, man I can’t wait for season 2, I’m so excited to know more about the Blight family (and why Amity’s nickname is Mittens, according to the stream) I personally think that Mr Blight is not as bad as he lets on, it’s just the feeling I get. My feeling is that he’s just being roped into that kind of behavior towards Amity by Mrs Blight. I’m not saying he’s a good parent at all, he was equally as abusive as Mrs Blight when it came to cutting ties with Willow, but I feel like there is especially more to him. Also, the thing about the Blight parents playing favorites does make sense especially with Mrs Blight since Ed and Em both got her natural hair color,,
Hmm considering Dana's choice of words about Mr.Blight, I get the feeling Amity may get her dorky or more understanding side from her father whilst her mother tried to make Amity a carbon copy of herself overshadowing her husband's traits in their daughter till she met Luz and began to open up. I mean seriously, Ed an Em are hardcore jokers/pranksters, and they probably didn't get that trait from their mother, who seems uptight, prim and proper obsessed.

My personal prediction (which I got from a dream last night):
What if Mr. Blight (I'm just call him Viren, because he kinda looks like Viren) is the bully that stole Lily's lunch money in the school records. The one that Eda was will to release Abomination's on then had to work together to clean up the mess. Yeah, they all got in trouble, but I think Viren could've gained some-sort of respect for Eda. And maybe a crush. Plus maybe he heard about how the sisters want to join the Emperor's Coven and thinks that if he and Eda were to get together in the future, the Blight family would be even more powerful than it is. Anyway, maybe Mrs. Blight (who I'm just gonna call Karen) was jealous that Viren had eyes for Eda and wanted to take her out of the picture. She learned that there was only one spot left to join the Emperor's Coven and played on Lily's insecurities to make her curse her sister. (I'm basing this off how Karen had a "all according to plan" look on her face during the flashback.) And obviously, since Lily had no interest in Viren, he ended up with Karen.
The only thing that doesn't make this work is that Viren in the flashback had a bored look on his face; but that could be that he was disappointed there was no fight.

“Good witch Azura” , who’s referenced in the first few episodes as a book character, but what is if was based on someone real? It would be an interesting plot twist, and they both share the same hairstyle and color.

I think we hate Ms and Mr Blight so much because for now, they are just Amity's parents, but in season 2 I hope we can see a different perspective and a bigger role than just being parents. Since Dana said that Mr Blighy is an interesting character , I bet we'll see more about him, and how that can affect Luz in a good or a bad way

I definitely agree with you about Mrs. Blight being the one who calls the shots in the family/relationship. One thing that I don’t think I’ve seen anyone talk about that is potentially related to this idea is how they appear in YBOS. Mrs. Blight is far more expressive in that one image, very clearly having a smug evil smile, while Mr. Blight looks almost apathetic and deadpan and I think this could be an indicator of how their characters will appear when they’re officially introduced. Perhaps Mr. Blight is in most cases a much less commanding force in the family and more of an enabler for his much more assertive wife.
It seems most people are gravitating toward the idea that Mrs. Blight is the political schemer, focused on social standing and manipulation of others, while Mr. Blight is generally okay with a wider variety of behavior so long as a person is powerful. It would explain why Ed and Em have free reign to goof off, and why Mr. Blight seemed bored with the non-battle between Lilith and Eda.
I wonder if now with Willow having grown into her power and becoming a really powerful witch, Mr and Mrs Blight will be like "Oh sure you can hang out with her now", which I feel would be really upsetting for both Amity and Willow. That they literally give Amity permission to see her childhood BEST FRIEND because they now think Willow is "good enough". It would just be messed up. The whole thing is messed up.
I can already see a lot of seeds as to why Mr. Blight may be fun to write. I could see him taking his wife dyeing the hair of the one kid who's hair resembles his personally. his bored and disinterested expression as teen had a LOT of personality for a brief background still. And what if he makes the cute lunches?

Something about Em and Ed, they could be trouble-makers and cut class, as a way to deal with the pressure of the parent, that we don't see them under such pressure or expectations donsn't mean they didin't suffer it. Especialy now that we know that Mrs. Blight even chose their clothing.
Other thing is we know the people they invitated to prom did not make it, maybe, and just maybe, that could be related to their parents.
We also know they are part of the ilusion track and they could have pick up that track as a way to show something they are not, they know how to put a false image of themself to their parents (and others).
Amity Blight, from the bratty, over obsessive top student, to having one of the saddest backstory in cartoon history.
I'm wondering if Lilith is training Amity not so much because she's the best of the best of her generation but because of family connections. If those two kids in the flashback are the Blights, and in all likelihood they are, then they attended school with Lilith. They might of been "friends" with her back then, or at least glomped onto her once she made it into the emperor's coven. Coupled with their clear wealth and connections, they likely pulled some strings to arrange it. Granted Amity has a certain level of natural talent and skill, which likely helped it, but it could be another thing her mother is doing to one up Boscha's mother, which is why she is doing this for Amity rather then the twins.
We actually don't see much of Lilith being a mentor to Amity. It was only in her debut episode that those two had any interaction and Lilith just used her as a show piece and pawn in her rivalry with her sister. Most of her screen time has been trying to bring in/one up her sister or a side quest for the emperor. I'm looking forward to seeing Lilith and Amity interact in season 2 after so much of them has changed.
For the lunch box, I’m sorry if I’m stupid, but I also think they cute lunch box could be a way that Mrs. Blight controls amity. Since the lunch box is so cute and kid like, it could be way to keep amity thinking she’s a baby and keeping her in line. As it seems they would want to control her, it would make sense that they want her to think she is powerful. I’m sorry if I’m dumb but I like this theory I case up with. C:
I think, Mr Blight is not as bad as he seems. Neither the shadow nor in the flashback is he smiling, while Mrs Blight is smiling in an unpleasant way in both scenes. Probably, Amity has to work harder than her siblings because she comes after her father and hasn't got the innate talent. Also, in the shadow scene, Mr Blight is merely following Mrs Blight's lead, not initiating the threat.
So, either, the Blight family is not inherently that bad, which might be seen when Amity's grandparents from the Blight side of the family show up, or her father wasn't a Blight and he took his wife's name when they married.
Personally, I believe, the mother was not a born Blight and the father was made to marry her due to politics, either because the mother's family held great influence as well or because the mother showed extraordinary aptitude for magic and the Blights wanted to get an extraordinarily talented witch under their banner. Mrs Blight's smile indicates that she was happy (or at the very least content) with the situation. either she had genuine affection for Mr Blight (unlikely, giving her personality) or a political match making suited her own personal ambitions, she was not pressured by her own parents.
This might also be the root of the rivalry between Mrs Blight and Bosha's mother. Maybe Bosha's mother also wanted to marry into the Blight family, either due to pressure from her parents, personal ambition or genuine affection for Mr Blight.
I know everyone relates Amity and Luz with Catra and Adora but this video litterally just proved they are Mabel and Pacifica 😂
The way that the Blights are written is very similar to Firelord Ozai in TLA. We only know to hate them through their actions, but at the same time, that is all we need to know. That being said, it would be an interesting twist if they were more nuanced then just "bad, snooty parents"

What if Boscha's mother went against Amity's mother to join the emperor's coven and Mrs. Blight lost so that's why she is pressuring Amity to join the coven and is getting taught by the leader of the coven. It could be a reason why Boscha is considered of high esteem enough to be friends with. Keep your enemies close.

I noticed that in Lilith's flashback, both Alador and Odalia were wearing Abomination track uniforms (though Odalia is much less obvious, the shadow is darkening the magenta color) Initially I thought one of them would have been in illusions due to the twins being in illusions, but apparently not. This leads to the conclusion that they are playing favorites because the twins got to choose what they wanted, unlike Amity who _coincidentally_ has the same track as her parents. I think that since Em and Ed had strong magic and had much skill, to the delight of their parents, they got placed in the track they wanted, knowing they'd be good at it.
I could be wrong but these were my speculations don't mind me!

I see a lot of myself in Amity and I also see my parents in her's. It's almost scary but not uncommon. Many kid's feel immense pressure from their parents and is something I really want to see more in cartoon's.
Okay I haven't seen many people mention this but I thought it was interesting in the flashback where we see young Mr and Mrs blight you can see that they are the only students in the crowd meaning that they probably have some special connection that allows them into emperor covenant business

I get the impression that, if not both, one of the Blight parents would be more than willing to force an unbreakable oath on Luz or anyone they deem "unworthy" of being around any of their children.
TL;DR Mr. and Mrs. Blight have already had a lot of character development that we've seen from how their kids behave despite not being onscreen yet. Also, Mrs. Blight has green pubic hair.
Willows family HAS to be of higher status as well. For her to even be amitys friend to begin with. Alador and Odalia didn't like their daughter being associated with a "late bloomer".
It's said that the Blights are more complex than the Northwest. The Northwest were cruel to Pacifica simply because she had to be like them. The Blights, considering how this show highlights the toxic impact an hierarchy can have on the people, must do this because just as they were taught that consorting with the strongest ensures you a good and prosperous future, they now want their daughter to be like them believing this is the only way for her to acquire a worthy lifestyle. However, considering that they're over-zealous regarding this phylosophy of theirs, something tells me they tried to consort also with outcasts, and it almost backfired on them.
I feel like amity father will be the nicer parent, he might just go along with his wife's manipulative ways. He Might stand up to ms.blight. objecting to the way she acts, and finally, protect his daughter.

well I think it will play out like this
there would be a day where the coven
leader's would come to Hexside and
I am pretty sure that the head of the
abomination track is Mrs. Blight and
since luz studies all magic she would
be in the abomination track so maybe
Mrs. Blight will bound with her
maybe even train her after school
hours and maybe Amity will notice
and suspect something and Amity
might try to distract her from
training with her mom but it will fail
and they will have a mentor, student
relationship and Amity will half to
get Lilith,Eda,Gus,Willow and King
involved and maybe half to even
fight Luz and then just go from
there I think this would be a great
episode or even a season finale.
