    Go Tell Aunt Rhody fits in perfectly because it has that “childhood” vibe, the thought of being at my grandma’s in the village pops up in my mind every time i hear it.
    So that’s more of a psychological horror approach they did by using this particular song.
    Btw i really liked that you used it at the end even though you didn’t want to because of copyright stuff during the video

    A bit late to the party, but I can explain the choice of song for RE7. There is a NPR podcast called Music Respawn that interviews composers for video games, which they did with the creative mind behind this rendition of "Go Tell Aunt Rhody". The reason they chose this song is because the melody is well known in English and in Japanese, where it is known as "Musunde Hiraite". In both cases, it is a children's song that has been re-purposed into a more disturbing version (though the original English version is pretty dark itself).

    Luke, I’ve been watching video game analysis videos on TH-cam for a while. Just wanted to tell you that yours are simply the best, you take your opinion and not only give it but really do find the sweet spot of being biased on things you like and being balanced with things you don’t like but are subjectively bad. The research, the editing, I mean even the script is well written. Super awesome man, I feel like I’m getting away with something watching these for free with an ad, I’m donating to a patron if you have one, keep being awesome man, looking forward to all your new videos.

    I love your definition of Outlast 2 as a chore. You're stuck in that shit, constantly anxious, the boss ""fights"" make you sweat, cry. You, exactly like the main character, only want to get it over with, get the fuck outta there. It's almost always no fun; You are not just going around shooting monsters with shotguns. It is actually, ironically, the very reason I love it and it works for me, if not for a big audience of players just wanting to enjoy themselves.
    It's the only videogame that actually made me feel the lost of hope, the despair, the HORROR, especially in the Permadeath difficulty.
    Still, I agree on many of your points, there is a lot they could have done different, but as someone who doesn't play many videogames, that was an experience I'll never forget.

    When you talked about RE7's problem with the uncanny valley following thought crossed my mind: The animation itself looks believable, however, since it was developed in Japan, they probably used Japanese actors for the motion capture. Putting Japanese mimic and gesture, as well as certain behaviours on Caucasian people looks really off, as if they put on an act… I think that's what's the biggest issue concerning the uncanny problem.

    RE7 is a good survival horror but it doesn't feel like a Resident Evil. I've been playing RE since 99. I was 7 years old when I first played it, believe it or not. This game didn't look or played like a Resident Evil and that was really disappointing. RE6 was also a completely different game and RE5 for the most part too. I still believe RE Revelations 1 and 2 are the true successors to RE4.

    • @kouvue9830
      @kouvue9830 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'll agree it's not the traditional RE games that we've had before. But RE7 is definitely good in its own rights. And did what it was meant to. A return to horror that the past couple RE has been missing. It's immersive, horrifying, and keeps you on your feet with the dark areas (which sets up for RE2 remake). I myself will say that I've scorned RE7 when I saw the trailer along with some of the play through and said that it's another failure until playing. RE7>RE6/5.

  • @Templarfreak
    @Templarfreak 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Just being able to fight back is inherently less scary to me. If it's like Resident Evil 2, fighting back isn't just something you can do. It's a conscious decision you have to make. This decision in of itself is what's scary about RE2, because the more you fight back the progressively weaker and weaker you get because you have highly limited resources.
    This is part of my major complaints with The Evil Within. It's just got tense themes and some scary moments, but that dread of running out of ammo or health or otherwise not being able to fight back anymore because you messed up earlier is just not there, period. Unfortunately, people spoiled by modern "optimized," "smoother," games with "better UI and controls" have to ruin that instead of dealing with the consequences of their actions by lowering the standard of the game by making resources much more plentiful and having you always have more then enough you need and being able to instantly react to, aim at, attack, and fight back against something instead of having to worry about your positioning and the time it would take to fight back against something and being caught off guard by something and so many other cool and fun elements that are completely abandoned by "improving" upon the formula in those ways.
    RE7 fixes a lot of the problems in The Evil Within in those ways. There's more limited resources, the combat and UI management feels slower and clunkier (and this is a good thing), but I do actually think all the combat being highly scripted does ruin the experience some. Of course, in RE2 every enemy was pre-placed, not randomly generated at all, so you could memorize them and work around them and such. However the gimmicky aspect of what is effectively the same thing in RE2 in RE7 I feel like is unnecessary and pointless and trying too hard to include these so they're more shocking and more reminiscent of actiony set pieces which ruins the horror for me. It also removes most of the most important aspects that made RE2 so fucking scary, that I had already mentioned: The choice of fighting back. Most encounters in RE7 do not end unless you successfully fend them off (This is actually also a problem in RE4 and why I don't think it's as scary as 2). You can't just say "fuck it" and leave streaming urine and poo down your pantlegs as you do so most of the time. This helped out RE2 so much, because if you had to come back through that area you had to risk encountering them again. In the RE1 remake they added Crimson Heads which further cemented this idea that fighting back is something you need to make very conscious decisions about. This decision is ultimately what makes any of the good RE games scary. The dread that you might regret it later. The crazed and panicked motions of aiming the gun and firing. Seeing that you're using so many bullets on a single zombie and they just keep slowly shuffling toward you, and then when they do die it's horribly dissatisfying by just casually and softly falling over limp adding to the dread that fighting these things may not be worth it. You don't actually have that in RE7 (and, to an extent, RE4 too).
    You also seem to have this notion that nobody can possibly find the horror elements themselves in a game to be gamey and fun. I would not say Outlast 2 is better than the first one, but Outlast 2 is still a fun game for this reason. The horror aspect is the game and you fundamentally don't understand that. It's not that the game that is bad or doesn't let you play a game, you just don't find the elements that make it a game fun. Outlast uses far more gore and other horror tropes, but you didn't hear anybody complain about it there because the horror as a game was delivered so flawlessly that you didn't really notice the game manipulating you in that way. In Outlast 2 it's not delivered so flawlessly. It is not a good sequel, but it's not that much of a lower quality game overall as you are suggesting. The problem with people complaining about getting lost in Outlast 2 and all the "trial-and-error" stuff in it is that is a pretty subjective experience. A lot of people did not have those problems or they were very infrequent for others.
    Also, Outlast 2 at the bare minimum had a pretty mixed reception. You are outright lying when you say things like most people didn't like it.

    • @DAmaterasa
      @DAmaterasa 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it comes down to two things. 1) it's a game and people have varing levels of intrest or investment in horror so to maximize their audience and playablilty, naturally companies will adjust things for light players or beginner players so they can enjoy it like guaranteeing a flashlight or weapons. 2) this is why adjustable difficulty exists, so more hardcore horror gamers can have the restricted ammo and weapons, greater weakness, stronger enemies that intensify the horror. At the end of the day you have to ask yourself is it really worth knocking on a game that's more widely accessible just because it's adapted and changed to better fit an entry level player. Games are meant to be enjoyed and wider accessibility for enjoyment isn't bad. (Also the RE7 DLC Ethan Must Die is everything you could ask for and I think the fighting in both RE2 and The Evil Within, are actually quite similar)

    • @Templarfreak
      @Templarfreak 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DAmaterasa Ultimately what you are talking about is addressing a minor thing I said and is not really about the rest of my post. While I can certainly agree with the position of getting a bigger more expanded audience, I think generally most genres in video games are just not widely accessible and to try and force that lowers the quality of the game IMO by trying to make it something it's not (more like an action game, or more casual, or whatever). I am not saying RE7 or RE4 are bad games because of this one problem, they certainly have way way more good than bad to them (although I am saying The Evil Within is a bad game, but that's just my opinion).

    • @DAmaterasa
      @DAmaterasa 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Templarfreak I understood your post: you think that a horror game where fighting back is a necessity or is made too easy for the player makes for a less fun game and that the pure essence of horror can be fun. Those are your opinions and I shouldn't fight them, I was simply explaining the rationale for why survival horror games have changed the way that they have (emphasizing the "survival" versus the "horror") and that I don't think these changes are bad ones and that more hardcore horror hasn't been lost.
      (It's great that you like the Resident Evil games, The Evil Within was my first horror game experience and I would consider it a good foyer because I grew up with First Person Shooters)

    • @DAmaterasa
      @DAmaterasa 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Templarfreak I've thought on this for a while now, and though I still think that wider accessibility in games is a good thing I can appreciate why genre savys like you want games to stick to their guns: because it can lead to poorer quality or even censorship, and nobody wants that. So thank you, I understand things a little better now
