From what I recall, instead of a VP70, Leon has a Desert Eagle in .50AE and gathered a shit ton of ammo from the Kendo gun shop and then later gets the shotgun. Claire has the Browning Hi-Power and later gets the VP70 from Chief Irons. I think that's how it went in the book.

Leon wasn't issued the matilda as his standard police pistol. It was his first day on the job and he doesn't get his police gear until he is at the RPD. The matilda was his personal side arm that he carried for self defense. the browning HP is the RPD's standard handgun.

One thing a lot of people don't know, is Leon was never meant to be a regular patrolman type cop. He was trained to be a member of the RPD Select Police Force, Created to replace the now disbanded S.T.A.R.S. He wasn't a regular cop, he was a Police Special Forces Officer, and was given advanced firearms and hand-to-hand training. Technically the SPF was basically just SWAT (but then basically so was STARS) and was created by Irons to fail (hence why you only see Leon wearing the special uniform, cause the rest were sent to the most dangerous places to die) but it makes sense he would be given special treatment, cause he wasn't just a regular cop.

One thing to keep in mind if you see something obviously switched around in a model is that because Japan has really strict and weird copyright laws, they will tend to do tiny and noticeable changes just in case(which is why the names may reference the originals, but never be exactly that).
Usually if you see something wrong and could be described as "marginal-but-obvious" it's to avoid licensing and copyright issues. Doubly so if other aspects of the material have clearly had a lot of work put into them.
39:40 I'd also like to mention the general profile of the gun is based off of a gun in the game, y'know Killer7, where Kaede Smith's gun is an M1911 with a massive sniper scope on it. During the Original RE4 however it was replaced with a laser sight because all guns needed a laser sight due to that being your crosshair. I really like Killer7, I had to bring it up.

The VP-70 is Leon’s own personal handgun. In resident evil 2 the standard issue pistol for the Raccoon city police department was the browning hi power, however in 3 you can get the Glock 19 as your starting gun off of a police officer, so maybe the RPD was trying to replace the hi power with the Glock 19 or it was that officers carry weapon. Also the W in W-870 most likely stands for Wing Master, based off of the Remington 870 Wing Master.
2:54 You're referring to Robert Kendo. He has a brother named Joseph Kendo, who is still very much alive. In fact, Joseph Kendo is the one that designs the guns. He made the Samurai Edge for S.T.A.R.S. and the Silver Ghost for Leon. 14:58 I believe in the RE2 remake, it's established that the Matilda is Leon's personal pistol. Not his standard issue police sidearm. And yeah, the standard issue RPD sidearm is supposed to be the Browning Hi-Power. Don't know why that one officer in the RE3 remake has a Glock 19 though. Maybe the RPD allows some officers to request a different firearm as their standard issue. Some of the weapons are reused assets from the previous games as well. The Matilda, the W-870, the Riot Gun, the LE 5, the CQBR, and any other gun that I happen to miss. Those guns are from the RE2 and RE3 remake.

@Poteto Bloke it can be a plethora of reasons, and any of them can make sense. Even big budget LE agencies have their weird transition periods and oddities if you look into their histories far enough. In my headcanon, the Brownings were clapped out, and they were transitioning to Glocks like most LE agencies would have still in the late 1990s.
IIRC Police Officers, at least in the past, were allowed to carry their own personal sidearm instead of the standard issue if they were given permission Just as Leon might've planned to carry his Matilda instead of a Browning Hi-Power, that Cop in RE3R might've asked and been given permission to carry a Glock 19

Hey Zach, I belive that 1903 might be modeled after the sniper versions. They were built and issued with the irons removed and a scope mount bridging the reciever. All they appeared to do for the game version was replace the optic specific mount for a picatinny rail. And if the rifle is shooting actual M2 ball(or equivalent spec), a .308 Acog reticle would be close enough in calibration to work.
Only issue with that... Is that the box for the rifle ammo is a 5.56 NATO ammo box. It fires 5.56... unless we're intended to discount that info, it's likely chambered in 5.56
The reason the red 9 in the remake does less damage overall is because it lacks the of red dot, The game will give a big increase in crit chance if you let your reticle focus, but with any weapon with the red dot equipped it automatically gets 100% accuracy and the crit chance bonus on each shot, so if you could put it onto the Red it would turn into sniper 9
It also just does less damage in general. The exclusive upgrade for the Red9 only brings it up to 4.05 (Blacktail maxes out a 3.6, where the original Red9 with exclusive brought it up to 6.5. Fully upgraded, it was exactly half the power of a stock Broken Butterfly.) I feel it was such a braindead pick in the original game that when they tried to balance the handguns out, they way over corrected on the Red9. It's already a hit that you can't put the laser sight on it, and the precision is on the poor side too. Just seems like they didn't leave enough meat on the Red9 to let it be the powerhouse the Remake wants to claim it is
@@DrWolfensteinz Well I chop up the idea of the red 9 not being able to have a laser dot in the remake is more or less because it was probably owned by someone in the village who got it and never tuned it up like leon will do through the merchant while in the original it was a gun that was modified by the merchant that you bought exclusively from the merchant. It would make sense that the merchant had modified it to make it stronger and precise with the laser dot than a standard red 9 like in the remake.
I love listening to these kinds of videos, its always neat to see how close some in-game weapons are to their IRL counterparts. As for guns i used, being as boring as i am, i used the Silver Ghost, Riot Shotgun, Stingray, and the Terminator Magnum.
It is kinda cool how RE games often don't go for the most common guns to include in their games so sometimes you get stuff like VP70 which I don't think I have seen in anything else than in Aliens.
And in case you wanted to know, the Killer7 pistols name is also a reference to the game Killer7 itself. Kaede uses the gun that you showed off in the game.
About the Kendo engraving, there's actually two Kendo brothers, Robert and Joseph Kendo. Robert is the one you meet in Raccoon City, Joseph was out of town during the events of RE2-3, but you find a fax he sent to the STARS office in the original RE3 about the Samurai Edge version of the M92FS.
I'd love to hear Zach's thoughts on the ammo choices in this and the original game. The "magnum" ammo in the remake is .45 ACP, the shotgun shells in the original were labelled as sabot slugs, and the smg ammo in the remake is also 9mm like the pistol ammo, just to name some things I found funny.
The reason for the cutouts on the foregrip of the TMP is that it was modeled after a VERY early model of grip for the B&T MP9, which never made it into full production. As far as I know, there are none in existence anymore, and the only evidence I've found that they ever existed are a few pictures of early models of MP9 from old gun magazines.

My in universe reason for the Silver Ghosts serial number was that Leon kept pointing the barrel right at his face every time he read the serial number where it was originally placed. Also, i dont care if he dies. Kendos ghost survivors level is canon in my heart.

I just had this thought as a theory. I wonder if the CQBR and LE5 you find are Krauser's. Especially the CQBR. Maybe his old military rifle? Just a theory, probably not correct but, would be cool. The C96 is my favorite handgun. It’s so cool! iirc it was the first commercially successful semi auto handgun (since the borchardt c-93 didn’t do so well). Also, there was a magazine variant created in called the Schnellfeuer M170 which had a magazine well and the ability to fire in full auto. There’s also a carbine version called the m1917 Mauser trench carbine with a longer barrel and front grip (meant to be used with the stock), 40 round magazine, and full auto. It was supposed to be a replacement for the Luger carbine, but was deemed too expensive and wasn’t made en masse. It’s a badass gun and I hope I’m able to shoot one some day! I have 2 models of the C96, a crappy plastic dart shooter I got at a yard sale and plan to convert into a DL-44 (Han solo’s blaster) and a really nice metal replica, which is hollow but has a functioning slide, hammer, and trigger. I kinda wish I got the one with the stock, but oh well. It is a gorgeous pistol and I wish it wasn’t so fucking expensive (cursory googling I did a few years ago put $15,000 as the LOW end of prices for them)
Oh hey, that's my shotgun at 17:12! I recognize the wear on the barrel from the aftermarket bayonet lug I run sometimes for giggles. That photo was one I took for a review I wrote years back. Neat. In addition to the issues you mentioned, that "870" also has no slide release, and the shell carrier seems to be either too high or completely absent. And that ejection port is entirely too squared-off. The 870's ejection port is very distinctively rounded-off at each end. Actually, that squared-off ejection port kinda makes it look more like one of the S&W 3000 copies than an actual Remington 870 (although all the other issues still stand).
the VP70 was adopted as a handgun for colonial marine officers (and I think WY executive types) as well as a modified futuristic version being the default handgun for the 2010 AVP game and a sidegrade pistol for aliens: colonial marines

You actually can remove an 870's safety button, and the gun will work fine. But there'll be a pretty obvious hole left behind in the guard behind the trigger.
so, at one point, Zack, you ask about the VP70 being RPD issued. It's not. It's Leon's personal pistol. Standard RPD issued pistols are Browning Hi-Powers. The Glock 19 from RE3 seems to have also been that fallen officer's personal pistol, because any and all officers ever shown in the franchise seem to carry the Browning.
So a couple things to note about the usp they have. 1- in freecam shots you can see the sg-09 uses a metal magazine with ribs similar to the 45cal mag or a uspc/p30 mag 2- while it seems like it would work on the surface the attachment of the compensator is actually pretty bad and would lead to premature frame cracking due to a screw vertically compromising the polymer frame at its structurally weakest spot, in addition the downward force of the expelling gases on the port of the comp onto that screw connection point would eventually lead to a catastrophic shearing of the polymer. Now you can see this was done as a creative license on the idea of the match weights that are commercially available to hk pistols that attach to the rail, but since their connection is laterally across the rail surfaces the polymer frame is able to absorb the downward forces imparted on them across a greater surface area. Now the change in weight dynamics in the front end of the frame will usually lead to a slowing of the cycling action of the slide due to geometry changes interacting with the recoil spring assembly. While with light usage with the right loads this is not a problem especially to a design as overbuilt as the usp, the better method would actually be to use the tactical model's threaded barrel and attach a comp directly to the barrel. In this instance a standard usp recoil spring assembly would be adequate as the comp would reduce the stress on the recoil spring unlike a suppressor which does require the tactical model rsa to run suppressed. 3- after closely looking at my gameplay and cutscenes the usp muzzle flips far more than it should for a compensated 9mm. My theory is that very early on they played with the idea of making the usp a 45 and then changed it back to 9mm and never bothered to remodel the magazine back to a polymer mag or change the muzzle flip animation to something flatter more fitting a compensated 9mm. Overall the guys at Capcom did a great job tweaking the usp design most likely not even having access to a live fire version most likely only using airsoft replicas for reference

As a firearm and military history nerd/fan I love listening to these "rants" they are very entertaining to my lizard brain. Also as someone who has just built my first AR platform i can really appreciate the detail Zach goes into with this one
7:30 This is very true; I am fortunate enough to own a real Mauser C96 with "Waffenfabrik Mauser" markings and all, but it is so worn out, either from improper care over the years, or just being fired so much, that the magazine spring is so weak that you are able to load the weapon without the use of clips (which should not be possible normally) and the rifling in the barrel is now non-existent, and the gun keyholes at 10 yards; all that aside, the gun still cost $800 in it's current condition. I am still very grateful to be able to own one, as I was always fascinated with the C96 because it's such a unique handgun and a massive part of firearms history.
15:02 I don't remember where, but OG RE2 actually addresses the fact that the VP70 is Leon's personal carry gun, which Raccoon City PD officers are allowed to use in service. The standard issue firearm is the Hi-Power as you said, which Claire finds in the glovebox of the patrol car in the intro of OG RE2 - kinda neat attention to detail, especially for 1998. The item description even mentions that the VP70 is an "unconventional" gun. So yeah, Leon confirmed gun nerd/dumbass.

One thing to keep in mind if you see something obviously switched around in a model is that because Japan has really strict and weird copyright laws, they will tend to do tiny and noticeable changes just in case(which is why the names may reference the originals, but never be exactly that).
It's also why Nintendo shuts down fan games. Which is shit mind you, but it's just normal to do that in Japan I believe

Usually if you see something wrong and could be described as "marginal-but-obvious" it's to avoid licensing and copyright issues. Doubly so if other aspects of the material have clearly had a lot of work put into them.
39:40 I'd also like to mention the general profile of the gun is based off of a gun in the game, y'know Killer7, where Kaede Smith's gun is an M1911 with a massive sniper scope on it. During the Original RE4 however it was replaced with a laser sight because all guns needed a laser sight due to that being your crosshair.

Sadly in the remake the killer 7 logo isn't engraved on the slide, loses a bit of the charm.

I was merely making a poor taste joke about a gun, for all the minute differences and varying degrees of complexity, is simply propellant, toob, and projectile. Where there is a will, there is a way, and ideas can't be regulated.
Tokyo Marui also made a few airsoft versions of RE guns, such as the albert samurai edge which was available for a limited time.

The VP-70 is Leon’s own personal handgun. In resident evil 2 the standard issue pistol for the Raccoon city police department was the browning hi power, however in 3 you can get the Glock 19 as your starting gun off of a police officer, so maybe the RPD was trying to replace the hi power with the Glock 19 or it was that officers carry weapon. Also the W in W-870 most likely stands for Wing Master, based off of the Remington 870 Wing Master.

2:54 You're referring to Robert Kendo. He has a brother named Joseph Kendo, who is still very much alive. In fact, Joseph Kendo is the one that designs the guns. He made the Samurai Edge for S.T.A.R.S. and the Silver Ghost for Leon.
14:58 I believe in the RE2 remake, it's established that the Matilda is Leon's personal pistol. Not his standard issue police sidearm. And yeah, the standard issue RPD sidearm is supposed to be the Browning Hi-Power. Don't know why that one officer in the RE3 remake has a Glock 19 though. Maybe the RPD allows some officers to request a different firearm as their standard issue.
Some of the weapons are reused assets from the previous games as well. The Matilda, the W-870, the Riot Gun, the LE 5, the CQBR, and any other gun that I happen to miss. Those guns are from the RE2 and RE3 remake.

@Poteto Bloke it can be a plethora of reasons, and any of them can make sense. Even big budget LE agencies have their weird transition periods and oddities if you look into their histories far enough.
In my headcanon, the Brownings were clapped out, and they were transitioning to Glocks like most LE agencies would have still in the late 1990s.
IIRC Police Officers, at least in the past, were allowed to carry their own personal sidearm instead of the standard issue if they were given permission

Hey Zach, I belive that 1903 might be modeled after the sniper versions. They were built and issued with the irons removed and a scope mount bridging the reciever.
All they appeared to do for the game version was replace the optic specific mount for a picatinny rail.
And if the rifle is shooting actual M2 ball(or equivalent spec), a .308 Acog reticle would be close enough in calibration to work.
Only issue with that... Is that the box for the rifle ammo is a 5.56 NATO ammo box. It fires 5.56... unless we're intended to discount that info, it's likely chambered in 5.56
The reason the red 9 in the remake does less damage overall is because it lacks the of red dot,
The game will give a big increase in crit chance if you let your reticle focus,
but with any weapon with the red dot equipped it automatically gets 100% accuracy and the crit chance bonus on each shot,
so if you could put it onto the Red it would turn into sniper 9
It also just does less damage in general. The exclusive upgrade for the Red9 only brings it up to 4.05 (Blacktail maxes out a 3.6, where the original Red9 with exclusive brought it up to 6.5. Fully upgraded, it was exactly half the power of a stock Broken Butterfly.)
I feel it was such a braindead pick in the original game that when they tried to balance the handguns out, they way over corrected on the Red9. It's already a hit that you can't put the laser sight on it, and the precision is on the poor side too. Just seems like they didn't leave enough meat on the Red9 to let it be the powerhouse the Remake wants to claim it is
@@DrWolfensteinz Well I chop up the idea of the red 9 not being able to have a laser dot in the remake is more or less because it was probably owned by someone in the village who got it and never tuned it up like leon will do through the merchant while in the original it was a gun that was modified by the merchant that you bought exclusively from the merchant. It would make sense that the merchant had modified it to make it stronger and precise with the laser dot than a standard red 9 like in the remake.

I love listening to these kinds of videos, its always neat to see how close some in-game weapons are to their IRL counterparts.
As for guns i used, being as boring as i am, i used the Silver Ghost, Riot Shotgun, Stingray, and the Terminator Magnum.
It is kinda cool how RE games often don't go for the most common guns to include in their games so sometimes you get stuff like VP70 which I don't think I have seen in anything else than in Aliens.
And in case you wanted to know, the Killer7 pistols name is also a reference to the game Killer7 itself.
Kaede uses the gun that you showed off in the game.
And it was also developed by Capcom

About the Kendo engraving, there's actually two Kendo brothers, Robert and Joseph Kendo. Robert is the one you meet in Raccoon City, Joseph was out of town during the events of RE2-3, but you find a fax he sent to the STARS office in the original RE3 about the Samurai Edge version of the M92FS.

I'd love to hear Zach's thoughts on the ammo choices in this and the original game. The "magnum" ammo in the remake is .45 ACP, the shotgun shells in the original were labelled as sabot slugs, and the smg ammo in the remake is also 9mm like the pistol ammo, just to name some things I found funny.
The reason for the cutouts on the foregrip of the TMP is that it was modeled after a VERY early model of grip for the B&T MP9, which never made it into full production. As far as I know, there are none in existence anymore, and the only evidence I've found that they ever existed are a few pictures of early models of MP9 from old gun magazines.

My in universe reason for the Silver Ghosts serial number was that Leon kept pointing the barrel right at his face every time he read the serial number where it was originally placed. Also, i dont care if he dies. Kendos ghost survivors level is canon in my heart.

Hearing you talk about these guns for nearly an hour did alot to help me sleep, very appreciated.
The C96 is my favorite handgun. It’s so cool! iirc it was the first commercially successful semi auto handgun (since the borchardt c-93 didn’t do so well). Also, there was a magazine variant created in called the Schnellfeuer M170 which had a magazine well and the ability to fire in full auto. There’s also a carbine version called the m1917 Mauser trench carbine with a longer barrel and front grip (meant to be used with the stock), 40 round magazine, and full auto. It was supposed to be a replacement for the Luger carbine, but was deemed too expensive and wasn’t made en masse. It’s a badass gun and I hope I’m able to shoot one some day!
I have 2 models of the C96, a crappy plastic dart shooter I got at a yard sale and plan to convert into a DL-44 (Han solo’s blaster) and a really nice metal replica, which is hollow but has a functioning slide, hammer, and trigger. I kinda wish I got the one with the stock, but oh well. It is a gorgeous pistol and I wish it wasn’t so fucking expensive (cursory googling I did a few years ago put $15,000 as the LOW end of prices for them)

Oh hey, that's my shotgun at 17:12! I recognize the wear on the barrel from the aftermarket bayonet lug I run sometimes for giggles. That photo was one I took for a review I wrote years back. Neat.
In addition to the issues you mentioned, that "870" also has no slide release, and the shell carrier seems to be either too high or completely absent. And that ejection port is entirely too squared-off. The 870's ejection port is very distinctively rounded-off at each end. Actually, that squared-off ejection port kinda makes it look more like one of the S&W 3000 copies than an actual Remington 870 (although all the other issues still stand).

so, at one point, Zack, you ask about the VP70 being RPD issued. It's not. It's Leon's personal pistol. Standard RPD issued pistols are Browning Hi-Powers. The Glock 19 from RE3 seems to have also been that fallen officer's personal pistol, because any and all officers ever shown in the franchise seem to carry the Browning.
What if that cop had a NEW standard weapon? Leon's RPD armor is actually a new issue - they were probably trying to outfit their cops with better gear

So a couple things to note about the usp they have.
1- in freecam shots you can see the sg-09 uses a metal magazine with ribs similar to the 45cal mag or a uspc/p30 mag
2- while it seems like it would work on the surface the attachment of the compensator is actually pretty bad and would lead to premature frame cracking due to a screw vertically compromising the polymer frame at its structurally weakest spot, in addition the downward force of the expelling gases on the port of the comp onto that screw connection point would eventually lead to a catastrophic shearing of the polymer. Now you can see this was done as a creative license on the idea of the match weights that are commercially available to hk pistols that attach to the rail, but since their connection is laterally across the rail surfaces the polymer frame is able to absorb the downward forces imparted on them across a greater surface area. Now the change in weight dynamics in the front end of the frame will usually lead to a slowing of the cycling action of the slide due to geometry changes interacting with the recoil spring assembly. While with light usage with the right loads this is not a problem especially to a design as overbuilt as the usp, the better method would actually be to use the tactical model's threaded barrel and attach a comp directly to the barrel. In this instance a standard usp recoil spring assembly would be adequate as the comp would reduce the stress on the recoil spring unlike a suppressor which does require the tactical model rsa to run suppressed.
3- after closely looking at my gameplay and cutscenes the usp muzzle flips far more than it should for a compensated 9mm. My theory is that very early on they played with the idea of making the usp a 45 and then changed it back to 9mm and never bothered to remodel the magazine back to a polymer mag or change the muzzle flip animation to something flatter more fitting a compensated 9mm.
Overall the guys at Capcom did a great job tweaking the usp design most likely not even having access to a live fire version most likely only using airsoft replicas for reference
I love these videos. I dont know what it is but i like listening to people who know a lot infodump about mechanical stuff like guns or when engineers talk about the physics behind bridges and stuff like that. Just cool for some reason

7:30 This is very true; I am fortunate enough to own a real Mauser C96 with "Waffenfabrik Mauser" markings and all, but it is so worn out, either from improper care over the years, or just being fired so much, that the magazine spring is so weak that you are able to load the weapon without the use of clips (which should not be possible normally) and the rifling in the barrel is now non-existent, and the gun keyholes at 10 yards; all that aside, the gun still cost $800 in it's current condition. I am still very grateful to be able to own one, as I was always fascinated with the C96 because it's such a unique handgun and a massive part of firearms history.

15:02 I don't remember where, but OG RE2 actually addresses the fact that the VP70 is Leon's personal carry gun, which Raccoon City PD officers are allowed to use in service. The standard issue firearm is the Hi-Power as you said, which Claire finds in the glovebox of the patrol car in the intro of OG RE2 - kinda neat attention to detail, especially for 1998. The item description even mentions that the VP70 is an "unconventional" gun. So yeah, Leon confirmed gun nerd/dumbass.
