  • Spider-Man launched on September 7th on the PS4 to critical acclaim thanks to its engaging story, phenomenal swinging system, and endearing characters. While I agree with most of these praises, I do think there's a lot of issues here, and we're going to go through these issues one by one in this video. Enjoy!

Damn, it's so frustrating when people talk about the Peter Parker aspect of the character as if it was a drag for the Spider-Man aspect, when both are equally important.
It's when you fail to portray that dichotomy when you have no right to handle the property, not when you fail to portray a cool fight scene.

In Batman, he's Batman the whole game because Bruce Wayne died in the alley with his parents, Bruce is just another resource for Batman. Bruce is his mask.
Spider-Man is opposite. Peter Parker has a life to balance, people to be there for. If anything my complaint would be that there wasn't enough peter parker, more of him missing commitments and regular struggle to do what he does while building a life

I agree with you. I don’t think we have been spoilt though, I just think people wrongly gauge a game by how many hours it takes instead of how good the game actually is. Don’t get me wrong, if it’s a $60 game then 6 hours isn’t going to cut it. Like Hellblade; Senuas Sacrifice is a small, 8 hour game for like $20 which is fine because it’s a high quality game. Yet 30 hours of quality is absolutely fine in a $60 game. I’d prefer that than 60 hours of mediocre, boring content.

To say that Assassin's Creed games arent beautifuly crafted also is just flat out wrong. There is a lot more fluff there too but the world especially are one of the best ones in gaming. 30 hours to 100% an open world game IS kinda bad. Its not a big gripe but most people want more when buying this type of game. Its perfectly acceptable for a game like God of War to have that runtime since there are only a few sidequests and the map is only a tad open.

    • @chrishavoc1744

Perhaps I phrased it wrong..the just for the sake of it and not beautifully crafted was about the side quests in ACO that contributed to the overall of a 100 hours..they were laughably plain and almost the same in terms of approach (find him, kill him) which resulted in them being a drag. In contrast the backpacks or the research stations for example added new layers to the game. The former adding to the lore with past situations Peter has been in and the latter to the variety of missions in game. And these are just two examples.

How is your interpretation of the Peter & MJ scene at the end so wrong?!
Clearly she meant that she had never stopped wanting to be with Peter but they had never found a way to make their relationship work. Like you said, the reason their relationship hadn’t worked was because she wanted to be treated more as an equal than as a “damsel in distress”. Peter letting her be more involved in things during the game, allowing her to be a lot more privy to what he is doing and allowing her to use her skill set as a journalist to take an active role in his life as Spider-Man proves his (somewhat reluctant) acknowledgement of this. With this change then leading to her promotion at work, she now literally and figuratively is a lot more empowered and taken seriously by Peter, and this is why she is now willing to give their relationship another shot. That’s what I got from the story anyway!

I have to completely disagree with you on the boss fight criticisms, especially the Doc Ock fight.
Boss fights can be made by the gameplay. But, they can also be made by their context. To make an amazing one you need to do both. The Doc Ock fight does this.
It's very difficult for free-flow combat systems to do boss fights because it is so clearly not built for that. It's built to be able to manage multiple enemies at once, without being ungodly difficult. Which is why the boss fights are so impressive from that point. But they are actually good fights (ignoring the Li fight on the train which is just a watered down QTE).
Less so on the side of the building but the rooftop fight is brilliant. You can swing around the central tower to dodge his attacks, you can straight up dodge his attacks, you can use the environment, your gadgets can be used to either disable his arms or stun him, you can use regular attacks and you can use finishers. The final fight allows us to use everything the game has given us to fight the biggest enemy.
On the side of the building this is different. Because of the narrative we have only our powers to rely on. Strictly as gameplay this is bad. It would suck to play Spider-Man without webs. BUT as a narrative point it is perfect. You are forced into an un-ideal situation and you feel it. But more importantly it allows the emotions to fuel the scene. Peter is forced to use fists, he puts all of his weight into each punch and the camera is much closer. Everything is done to bring the fight closer and ground it. No more cool flips or acrobatic manoeuvres just two men coming to blows.
Not to mention this entire point in the video rests on what feels like a very snooty view of boss fights and how they SHOULD be. Unfortunately I can't speak directly to the creator as he didn't give an example of what a good boss fight looks and plays like, so I'm forced to use examples of games and fights regarded to have good bosses.
Dark Souls is all about bosses. But in my opinion they have awful boss fights. Not because they're too easy, hell no, but because they're bland, visually and mechanically. You hit or you dodge and that's it. The difficulty comes entirely from your opponent, not you. You have to read the opponent, wait until safe then strike. Rinse and repeat.
With the Ock fight you have a variety of ways to steer the fight through your actions. You can be passive by waiting for attacks to dodge OR you can be aggressive by throwing the environment or using gadgets to disable him.
Another, in my opinion better, boss fight comes from God of War where you fight The Stranger. Like Dark Souls the opponent has a set amount of attacks with tells that allow you to dodge in time but none too overt that it's child's play to avoid. However, the player also has a wide array of ways to dictate the course of the fight, throwing the axe and melee attacking to disrupt the opponent as well as parrying attacks to leave the opponent open. These are all things that the Ock fight and so both should be praised similarly.
But that's the rooftop section of the fight. What about fighting him on the side of a building? Is there anything similar to that?
Well, yeah. Returning to God of War the final fight with Baldur, as well as when he is escaping on his dragon, is very much like that. Both give you limited options in order to focus on the scene and the moment rather than the "play" aspect. It works fantastically in God of War in both examples. The first is when you and Baldur grapple with each other, having to dodge left or right, regaining top mount position and pummeling them. It takes your options away to pull you into a much closer and devastating fight. The other example is free falling with Atreus and Baldur. This is a QTE which everyone screams is BAD NO GOOD LAZY but here is used well. It gives us a clear way to see Kratos and Atreus are working together. This is not possible to do feasibly in gameplay. Up to this point they had hoped that you learned to use Atreus well but because he is largely AI and fallible making you reliant on him is a huge gamble. So, of course, it's completely possible to best Baldur without using Atreus. But the QTE means that even if you don't want to use him you see that the two have grown.
Specifically this is a case that shows us an element of character that cannot be specifically SHOWN in gameplay alone because players DO NOT act they way they are "supposed to." They miss hints, forget mechanics and are stubborn to being told how to play. So to express a point it often has to be forced to make the story.
This is what Spider-Man does excellently. They force the player to leave Peters acrobatic finesse to deliver what would be knockout blows to a person he loved and trusted. They couldn't show this any other way. The camera is thrown right into Peter's back and you feel the exhaustion: emotional and physical. You can't do that any other way. And yes it's repetitive. Almost every boss fight is to some degree (excluding Arkham's Mr. Freeze fight) but sometimes gameplay has to take a step back to make the story shine.
To draw a well-known film comparison to...well compare, let's look at Star Wars. Which fight is better? Obi-Wan vs Anakin, or Luke vs. Vader? Most people would say Luke vs. Vader. Why? Is it the choreography? Of course not. Ep 3 had amazing and visually impressive choreography. Was it setting? Not likely. It's hard to top fighting on a volcano planet with collapsing structures. No it's good because of the context and emotions that we see.
The Doc Ock fight keeps the setting and spectacle: a battle on the side of a building, rain buffeting each man. But they strip away the flashy crap to give us a grounded (or walled) emotional battle between a former colleague, mentor and father-figure. That's what makes it a fantastic boss fight. You got your cake: an acrobatic dance atop a skyscraper, slinging webs and pylons at a foe. But you can eat it too: a stripped down slug fest on the side of a building.
Sorry for the mini-essay but I had to post.

I get what your saying but at the same time you don't have to be creative at all to win the boss fight, you can basically do the same things over and over again and still win, even on the hardest difficulty its like that. Now if it was kinda like the freeze fight in arkham city but a head on fight then that would be really cool cuz you can't just repeat the same things over and over again.

The real issue is the misinformation based on either not doing the research or not actually paying attention to the game. When he says Doc Ock's plans and fall were not set up well and that it would have been better if we could for example see something in the lab that would show us how he prepared for all of that stuff - even claiming we only get some exposition in the place where the Sinister Six gear was made - I had to facepalm.

A collectible placed in a lived in and pretty damned good representation of New York with a fast paced and really fun system of maneuvering through it topped off with a collectible that offers you a little piece of history of Spider-Man and the New York he lives in every single time you get one? That collectible sounds better than almost anything in any open world game released in the past few years. I know this video is old so this comment will probably go unnoticed but I had a few thoughts I wanted to share to give a different outlook
I really like your channel and think you do a great job overall analyzing games but there are a few things here that I wanted to point out that I personally disagree with, although to make things clear I do agree with a lot of your points, I just wanted to offer a few counters just for the sake of friendly discussion and to maybe help you see things in a different light
    1. people have already mentioned in the comments how the last scene with MJ and Peter is more nuanced than you may have initially believed, as it indicates that their desires remained constant since whenever they first started dating, they never stopped WANTING to be together, but the conflicts that are addressed in the game were the reason they NEEDED to not be together
    2. I think Otto knew Peter was spiderman since the beginning, when he saw Peter working on the suit, but he made the conscious decision to not let on and instead act like he thinks peter is spiderman's suit designer because its clear to him that its important to Peter that his identity remains a secret, so to give Peter peace of mind he decides to act oblivious. The reason he doesnt bring it up until the end is because telling peter he knows hes spiderman would cause peter to be less trusting towards him (since peter would wonder why doc initially acted like he didnt know anything) and would also make peter feel more threatened by the mere existence of Otto as his personal stakes would now be higher. Essentially, bringing it up would do Otto no good and could potentially cause peter to lose sympathy for him, so Doc had absolutely no reason to let on. At the end he loses all reservations and sees peter isnt gonna let up regardless so he lets him know as a method of getting into peters head. Thats my take at least
    3. I agree that the bosses were lackluster for the most part, although that did almost nothing to ruin my enjoyment of the game (improved bosses would still obviously be a very welcome addition to the next game however), but in my mind the fight with Otto is supposed to be more intellectual than physical. It would have been nice to have a more enjoyable final boss fight mechanically but I see Doc as an intellectual rival to peter, as well as a test of his morals. The real fight is the emotions peter goes through (which is why I believe they put so much emphasis on story and dialogue when the fight is going on) and the REAL real fight is their discussion at the end after Otto has already been defeated physically. I think the emotional side accounts to over half the "boss battle" and although its not what one typically thinks of while thinking of what a boss battle should be, I think this is pretty unique in that sense and that shouldn't be overlooked.
The biggest thing I can agree with when mentioning the flaws of the game btw is the endgame content/side stuff, the endgame is bare and I wish there was more to do because I love almost every mechanic the game has and wanted a better excuse to continue playing than "punch a handful of thugs who are committing crimes, by the way it basically accomplishes nothing". All the collectibles and such are not terrible in my opinion, and I don't find it boring because the traversal is so fun, but I'd rather have more side content thats genuinely enjoyable rather than simply "not boring", especially since for some people it does cross the line to boring which is a shame. They almost shot themselves in the foot cause they made something so enjoyable to play but only gave you a reason to play it for a dozen or so hours. I don't need a super long main game, I like the length of the story, but if they find a way to make non-main game stuff more exciting it would be really appreciated (the exception in this game is the properly fleshed out side missions, those are fun and have enjoyable villains). Oh, also, I agree secret photo ops are not an enjoyable endgame thing but considering theyre, well, secret, I don't think it makes sense to critique the game on not making it obvious where they are. Just wanted to point that out cause it was the only point you made that flat out didnt make any sense to me
Overall I think the video is still great and it's a bit of a shame it got dragged in the comments since I don't think people quite realize how difficult it is to make an hour long critique of the game based mainly on your experience and to not miss any small details or misread a few things, its totally fair for people to point out their issues with the video but I think it's irrational to be so harsh and upset at a few mistakes and not acknowledge the 50+ minutes of the video that didnt include those issues. Again, not sure if this'll be noticed but Just had a few thoughts and wanted to both let you know what I think you may have overlooked but also that I think you're doing a great job and you're clearly getting better and better as this channel goes on, and I wish you all the best

Swagruto Uzumaki no they didn’t. The Spider-Man 2 system was a combo based system. You’d mix your combos (as in button combos) that you unlocked throughout the game. In fact the counter button was a dodge button that you’d get the option to counter by buying it. The Arkham system is based on Rhythm. It gives you automatic counters and you really only have to press one button to do everything automatically. In spiderman 2 pressing one button would only lead to a simple 3 hit combo. Seriously did you even play the game? It’s nothing close to the Arkham games.

That doesn't mean the whole thing was for nothing. Like you said they learned how to deal with the issue and now that there's nothing holding them back their relationship can blossom again.

Luke, just wanted to reach out and say I really enjoy your critique videos. I enjoy how you look at the games in depth and provide your own perspective also while staying at an objective point of view. I do my own sort of examining and exploring a game and its systems and story and characters the way you do, I just do not make videos about it. So I think it is great that someone else shares their thoughts and opinions on a game at a deeper level and taking a look at why it is that way. Not just like most other reviews or commentaries that say something sucks but do not give a legit reason why other than it being stupid. You do all of this while still being entertaining and fun to listen to, and I applaud you for that. For me, these critique video allow to connect with a game on an even deeper level, and also point out to me some things I may have missed in my play through or multiple playthroughs of a game. All in all, I really enjoy the critique videos and I know they take lots of time and effort to make, and that does not go unnoticed. Keep up the great work and thank you once again. I also have a few ideas for critique videos if you were looking for some.

And I wish there was a way to improve spiderman's health, even on normal mode he dies way too easy sometimes. The silver sable soldiers are especially dangerous and when they take up positions on towers, they can interfere a little too often with the fun of swinging around.

And like I think that's where most of the difference of my opinion with this videos is tbh. You certainly sound like you're trying to be professional, but instead you come off as pretentious and spouting a bunch of empty words. You clearly didn't look very deep into this game and say many things that are flat out wrong, like the game trying to make you think the side quests will make you progress the main plot when that's never implied or that Spider-Man will make a remark if you ignore crimes which isn't true either. You clearly don't understand the audience this game was aimed at and the fact that treat side activities like you HAVE to do them even though you can just ignore them if you want. The fact that you complain about the game having enough content to last 30 hours just boggles my mind. You're upset that the game has enough stuff to do to give players the incentive to play longer.
You take your own personal little gripes and blow them way out of proportion, making them out to be these objective flaws when they're so incredibly subjective.
Oh yeah, you also go back to Spider-Man 2 on PS2, play it for half an hour and think you know enough to make a valid comparison with the latest game. You'll dodge am attack towards another enemy and its instinctual to dodge again even if no attack was made. 2) spider man in combat flips around and uses his agility as a weapon. • @Frank-kq4te
      @Frank-kq4te 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

sorry but i fail to understand, from when an action game that is basically story driven, must have a end game? End game is something that mmorpg or such had, or rpg after completing the main story because you have so much to explore. But this is spiderman, a very straight forward action game that once you complete, is over. What's strange in that? You don't seek an "end game" in uncharted, you don't seek an end game in souls series, or god of war, or Shadow of war, or Prototype, or Infamous. This is not the Division or Destiny, where the story purpose is upping you to the end game level requirement. This is Spiderman; the game is over, move on. Just because is open world, does not mean you must have an end game. That's a stupid criticism to say "it lacks an end game".

    • @Herodegon
      @Herodegon 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Shadow of war has an endgame (Finding new orc captains, collectables, side quests, etc.). Web of Shadows has an endgame (NG+). God of War PS4 has an endgame (NG+). Uncharted has an endgame (NG+). The souls franchise has extensive endgames (Bosses, DLC areas, Items, Quests, etc.). Even Spider Man PS4 has an endgame, just not one as extensive as the aforementioned games. I really was more just stressing my excitement for NG+, but I think that all games should have an end game to them, wether replayability, continuation of progress (such as the Arkham franchise), or otherwise. Games like Devil May Cry, while not long, establishes a good end game with it's immense amount of replayability. Spider Man PS4 has a decent end game, but it's lacking in comparison to the main story, with very few truly interesting side quests and little incentive to strive for collectibles. That said, I love Spider Man PS4, and I can't wait for the future updates and DLC.
Sorry, I went on a bit of a rant there :)

I think the final boss had enough emotional weight to essentially make it great and conclude the story tragically and beautifully. The stakes are incredibly high as you see how devils breath is affecting his friends, family and innocents(through cutscenes and phonecalls). The gameplay was not the focus of the last boss, as Peter didn't want to fight otto ( which is made evidently clear in dialogue and music) but does what he must to save the people he cares about. That's how you make a final boss in a spiderman game
