      That episode implied that Carlos also had toxic friends and only brought him along to make themselves look better in front of girls. If the creators weren't so intent on torturing penny for drama, bringing back Carlos would have been a good idea because he could understand what penny is going thru regarding her toxic friendships and convince her to dump her toxic friends. [It seems like Carlos and his teammates went to a different school, hence why he was never brought back. But that could have been easily fixed if the reboot/sequel was set in high school instead of middle school and there are teens that date teens from different schools.]

    It kind of rubbed me the wrong way how the episode (and really most shows/movies in that time) had an episode centered around learning to not treat a fat character poorly because they're fat but then the script also makes it so said fat character is OBSESSED with food and the humor comes from how they just can't stop shoveling food into their face.

    Fat phobia and also Skinny shaming are things that need to be talked about! As someone who’s always been bigger I’ve been ridiculed my entire life for just existing..as a kid they never talked to us about “Make sure you exercise regularly!” Like I genuinely didn’t know what a calorie was until I was 13. Michelle Obama changed the lunches and told us to eat healthy but adults don’t talk about weight. I feel like weight loss and weight in general is not talked about. Just “eat vegetables and exercise!” When there is so much more to it then that. I couldn’t have been the only kid who ate my broccoli and my bananas and thought “what am I doing different from the other kids” kids are developing eating disorders so young now. It’s just really sad. And the whole thing around skinny shaming sucks too. Like people ENCOURAGE being unhealthily thin..very concerning..

    • @nuclearseahorse
      @nuclearseahorse 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

      I think there's a slight difference tho cuz skinny shaming comes from real health concerns, meanwhile fat shaming hides behind health concerns but is actually just fear, hatred, and/or a superiority complex against something seen as undesirable. The roots are too different to cover as if they are the same problem, me thinks.

    • @tsukitanuki101
      @tsukitanuki101 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +26

      @@nuclearseahorse Skinny shaming CAN be from health Concerns but it's normally people just calling someone undesirable because they have gone past the "desirable" mark of skinny-ness. Fat shaming is very rarely rooted in "health concerns". People who feel superior will berate and belittle fat people for just existing..but mask it as "I'm just trying to help". A fat women can post a picture of a salad and she will be told she shouldn't eat at all even if she's trying to do better. But a skinny girl can post a salad and will be told she's doing amazing, and it looks tasty and she's a higher tier of women for eating lettuce and cheese. I agree they are too different to compare, but you are just wrong when it comes to the details.

I get A LOT of hate from just being skinny surprisingly, it's like no one stops to think like "hmm maybe they don't actually want to be skinny." People think it's as simple as me eating more but its not because its unhealthy to literally shovel down food in hopes of gaining weight and it makes you sick too.

    • @ReleaseTheBatz
      @ReleaseTheBatz 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      I agree. Especially now since in the U.S. since being “thick” is becoming more and more desirable I see more skinny women who don’t have a huge butt and super heavy curves, thick thighs, etc are viewed as undesirable now. So it seems like overweight and skinny people are getting the shit end of the stick too at this point. Eating disorders definitely need to be talked about more. We know about the ones that make you skinny but no one talks about the one that does the opposite that I suffer with and that’s Binge Eating Disorder. People aren’t aware it exists so a lot of these overweight people have it and don’t know it.

    I typically don’t comment, but there was a thing I feel you missed in the video, wonderful video by the way! But what I think you missed is the fact that he was only respected by Penny after he saved her siblings, which is a thing in our society where the ‘rejected’ or non typical are only accepted after they do something good for society, otherwise it’s okay to crap on them, so imo, I feel that they should’ve shown more of his personality, a lot less fat jokes, unless it’s for understanding what fat people go through

    What bothers me here how the episode followed the common pattern of "person is seen in an unfairly negative light" -> "person is useful to protagonist" -> "person is seen positively now".
    But fat people shouldn't have to "make up" for their fatness to be treated with basic decency and respect.
    I mean, yeah, this shows kids that fat people can be useful, kind, brave and so on, but they shouldn't *have* to be those things in order to deserve to be treated well.
    I think what would've possibly been a better approach is to have Penny and Carlos actually have a heart to heart, where, instead of Carlos just taking the abuse, he stands up for himself and calls Penny out, putting her on the spot for how she's kinda ruining the day for him by being so negative.
    She could then get flustered and realise that she's being unkind to him and apologize, and then if the writers really wanted the action in there, they could still have his heroic saving of her siblings, interrupting the end of the hear to heart.
    Alternatively they could've done that first, and then have Carlos call Penny out for suddenly treating him decently now that he was useful to her, making it clear that her and her friend's comments don't just run off of him and that their sudden change of heart doesn't undo their attitude at the beginning of the trip.
    I also dislike that they had to underline Carlos' redemption by having the buff guys blow off the other girls just because, kinda pitting the fat guy and the buff guys against each other.
    I think here it would've had a better message if the buff guys blew off their dates because of how they treated his pal.
    That would then also give more weight to the other girls' behaviour, because as it is, the only reason they had a bad day is because their dates happen to be jerks, rather than being a direct cause of their own shitty actions. (And preferring to spend the day with the person you find more attractive isn't an inherently shitty action imho. Being mean to someone over their body however is.)
    Idk, I just really do not like this narrative of a character having to do something to deserve basic human decency, as well as randomly tearing characters down just to make another character look better, even though there's no connection as to why they are percieved negatively in the first place.

    Something else I’d like to add is Why is it that in all of these “Don’t judge a book by its cover” esq episodes the character that is judged has to be some type of knight in shining armor behind the scenes! Like..dude even if he WAS scared to go on the ride because he didn’t wanna risk his own life that doesn’t give them permission to make fun of him??? He could be the biggest coward in the world and that still doesn’t warrant the hate he got 🤷🏽‍♀️ like in kids tv they have to find a reason why you should like a character. It can never just be “He’s fat, and you should be nice” it had to be “he’s fat, but he’s a hero! So be nice because look at what he did FOR ME”

    As someone who is bigger, my weight issues come from medical problems (PCOS amongst other things personally) and genetics. I wasn't so lucky to remain skinnier like my other family members and it doesn't matter what I do. Eating habits, diets, exercise, nothing works. It makes me feel embarassed because I feel like I am doing something wrong. Even still, people brush off how I feel and I actually am fairly active. I am doing everything I can think of to try and be healthy, but nothing changes.
    For a while (and I still do), I didn't really each a lot in a day. I felt like if I didn't eat, maybe I would lose weight and such. Obviously, that is not a healthy thing to think at all. I just wished people wouldn't be so closed-minded about how this stuff works because a lot of the times, people don't want to have weight problems. 11:13 what a lot of people don't think about before commenting on a bigger person is that there's always a reason behind it. There's a huge amount of bigger people who have an eating disorder, disabilities or just generally something wrong with their body. Most of these things start early in childhood and it's hard/sometimes even impossible to work against it. People should just stop and think before commenting on someone else (no matter what they're talking about)

    Acting like every fat person is fat because they eat all the time ignores the lived experience of many fat people.
    Also, acting like fat people aren't extremely aware of the effect their size has on situations really de-centers fat people in their own story. The moment when Carlos broke the ride they were on and just smiled like nothing happened is almost certainly not what would happen.

It's delusional to think that everyone in the world should look the same.

      I think that’s accurate, since most people who were skinny all their lives don’t actually know how to lose weight. They just assume exercise and cutting calories should work for everybody, and since _they_ aren’t overweight, they feel qualified in handing that out as advice. People don’t research it or accept any of the science that came out about it after the 1980’s. Speaking as someone who’s jumped from diet to diet and dealt with EDs on and off throughout my life, it’s really not that simple.

      I mean I'll never bully someone for their weight because that's just cruel and no one's perfect that can't be denied. But I do think the fat positivity movement can get really toxic and delude themselves that being overweight or morbidly obese is somehow healthy when being underweight or overweight can have extremely negative consequences on health. So if we pretend that's not unhealthy then we set up the illusion that it's a good idea to either starve oneself or regularly eat junk and not exercise, which can encourage unhealthy lifestyles. People shouldn't be judged for how look and life gets busy, and we don't always have time to workout or have access to healthy foods and in rarer cases hormones can make weight loss more difficult. However if /when people take charge of their health, they end being happier and healthier for it. And it should be for themselves,not anyone else.

    I am a person whose medical diagnosis is morbidly obese and I HATE people who say “just lose weight, diet and exercise.” I’m scheduled to have surgery January 10th to lose enough weight to even START exercising because I’m so big, I get pain in my lower back and legs if I exercise or even just STAND for 5 minutes. I can walk 6 yards and then I’m whipped out.
    As for dieting, I’m 28 and only JUST learning how to diet right. Growing up, my mom would make meals that were either fried in oil, carb heavy, or just high in calories, and/or starch. She always used canned vegetables, so even those had high sodium contents. But having grown up with the food pyramid being shoved down my throat, I didn’t know pasta 2-3 nights a week, salty canned veggies every night, and chicken fried in oil twice a week was BAD. I tried talking to a nutritionist, but she was a friend of my moms and so my mom INSISTED she be there for those appointments. The were 30 minute sessions and only 5 minutes was spent on and off talking to me about my diet, the rest was my mom and her chatting. When I went back to her as an adult, I just couldn’t take her seriously because of that. And she was the on,y nutritionist in my small town, so I couldn’t just get another.
    I also have a medical condition that makes me insulin resistant. I’m not diabetic, my body can make insulin it just can’t absorb it well. Because of that, my body craves sugary food. And it takes more for me to work off calories. As a child, I ran around the yard like a maniac and took Karate. As a teen, I worked at an animal shelter where I was expected to keep busy and active. All any of that did was slow down my weight gain or just keep me from gaining weight, but I was never able to actually lose weight. Because of how incompetent the doctors I had back then were, no one told me about my medical condition making me insulin resistant. I literally just learned that this past summer when I saw the nutritionist for my weight loss surger and she said “I noticed your file says you have poly cystic ovarian syndrome? Do you know that that could be making you insulin resistant? I’m going to have to run blood tests to be certain, but it’s highly likely.” And guess what? She was right. Years of my general doctors (both of whom KNEW I had this condition) telling me to just “diet and exercise” and neither one ever thought it important to mention this to me. Like, it would have helped to know I can’t JUST cut back on carbs (which includes sugar and pretty much every fruit I like) but that I had to all but cut them completely out of my diet! Not one of them thought to actually relay that important bit of information to me and left me to struggle for years. And my constantly failing diets were always a source of anxiety for me.
    Like I said, I’m getting everything done to qualify for weight loss surgery (I was 370+ pounds when I started over 4 months ago, not I’m around 357). I’m told that my weight will come off fast in the beginning and I’m glad because I plan to start walking once I’ve fully recovered. But it’s sucks that it took me so long to learn what I needed to be able to start losing weight. It took moving to another state and looking into a surgery to cut up one of my organs for me to get anywhere! I’ve lost time doing a lot of fun things because I didn’t have the energy or was too big to do them. If I had been given the guidance and information I have now from the start, things could have been different.

With some people (like myself) it's genetics. And there's other issues that can be the case. Even seeing this episode as a kid, I would keep muting the characters when they had the nerve to talk smack about Carlos. Carlos was such a gentleman, and as someone else down here said, a real hero. I would have loved to see more of him. Honestly, characters that were like him/looked like him in general on these shows. I have some personal experience with being a fat kid, and I got bullied for... I'm sure quite a few things but my weight was one point. Kids would even joke that I was as big as a planet with a gravitational pull. It hurt... because I was treated as inhuman and they went out of their way to throw their insults in my face a lot of the time.
    Now I'm slimming down, actually at a faster rate as of late, and a very nice woman in my community took notice. She commented a few times, and told me not to disappear (mind you, I'm still actually overweight, it's just that it's not immediately apparent and I'm in decent athletic shape, definitely better than I was as a young kid in third grade) and when I tried to assure her "I've got meat, I'm still overweight" she started telling me to keep that meat for winter : )
    So it felt positive toward having weight for one's comfort, health, that sort. I wanted to lose weight to improve my physical stamina and overall ability because I was not an athletic fat kid. Losing weight over my life has benefited me, I feel. When I see an overweight person I of course hope that they're healthy. While I'm dispositioned to think of weight loss as the inherent right choice, I do at least try to recognize it could be the best for that person. Are they healthy? It seems like it. Can they do stuff? Yeah. They might be strong, they might be in hard physical labor, they might just be comfortable and perfectly fine having extra meat. I've also heard plenty about eating disorders being produced within people for having extra gut or for not being super skinny even when ten pounds would have made them, in that particular position, much healthier. And I think I've gotten better at seeing extra weight as normal and even with biological advantage. Everything has its pros and cons after all.
    Another thing that affected me, too, was how you see all of these success stories, or at least I know I have early 2010's and maybe even late 2000's, about people going from 200lb to 150lb or something like that and they're treated as living their best life, or even painted in a heroic light, and this is compounded with the sad backstories of how people suffered things like bullying and sometimes even just plain sadness for being overweight. Again, while I'm happy to have lost weight, I will say two things: 1) Body Positivity is a good thing, because being mentally safe and knowing how your own body works and what it needs are more beneficial to your health than starving or otherwise depriving yourself for some ideal, and healthy overweight people exist, they still take good care of themselves; and 2) for me, losing weight slowly has helped me keep more and more of it off toward a body I can feel comfortable in for myself, and I've grown comfortable with myself over time.

    Something that I've learned in HR classes is that body weight is not considered a protected class, so if you are discriminated (Overlooked for being hired because your over or underweight) while it's unfair, legally the company wouldn't get in trouble.
    I think there's some cities that prevent that, but for most of the US weight is not a protected class. I hope that this gets changed because for a lot of jobs how much you weigh doesn't affect how well you perform.

  • @RosemaryWilliams49fruits
    @RosemaryWilliams49fruits 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    I think another important point that you just sort of touched on, is that pat phobia in our society makes people think there's some kind of moral obligation for everyone's bodies to look a certain way, and that, that way is the only acceptable or good way to be. Because of this mindset people are afraid of having a body that doesn't fit that look. People have made "health" a moral obligation, but have a very narrow definition of health that allows people to make judgements about other's health strictly on how well they fit into that preferred physical appearance and thus they are making judgements about that person's morality. People tend to think that fat people are "unhealthy" and "amoral" "lazy" etc when a lot of people are just fat, even while having what would be considered to be really healthy lifestyles, being vegetarian, going to the gym regularly, doing cardio etc, and they aren't fat because of a medical condition, they just are fat. And these fat people will be given dirty looks, or accused of being unhealthy if they even so much as get near a food court at a shopping mall. Of course being obese has been shown to contribute to negative health outcomes, but being ostracized and unfairly judged and criticized everywhere you go also leads to lower health outcomes. Then there are other people who have what would be considered unhealthy lifestyles, eating microwave pizzas and candy all week every week but they are skinny so no one bats an eye at them if they eat a burger, or gets fast food. There's so much evidence that people are making judgements and assumptions about people's lives and health based on a factor (physical appearance) that has been shown to be a very poor indicator of actual health and wellness, and having extremely unfair expectations, of what amounts to food and behavior piety, placed on fat people that skinny people don't have to meet. If you're skinny you can do all the unhealthy things in public and no one notices, or cares, because being skinny is all that matters, and people use "being healthy" as an excuse to bully others about their appearance. Fat people can't even try to engage in "healthy" activities without other people being cruel to them. That's the extent of what it means in our society to be fat phobic. I do think this episode does a great job of showing the negative stereotypes, and saying that a person can be big, and can enjoy eating, and that isn't a bad thing, and it doesn't make them a bad or boring person. It would've been really cool if Carlos had been a reoccurring character because he was interesting and gave the show the potential to take this dialog further and help Penny's friends also start to open up and understand that while looks can be nice, they don't have anything to do with how well you'll get along with someone, or what's in their heart.

    i love seeing this talked about! i was never fat, but for some reason i was always perceived as chubby growing up. the way people treated me will always affect my self image. even now, as an underweight adult, i have days where i still see that chubby kid in the mirror, and i fear the treatment of others. the craziest thing is how people treat me now when they find out i used to be chubby! i’ve learned to hide that part of my past because people see it as some kind of moral failing, if they found me attractive before suddenly they don’t when they find out i was chubby. it’s crazy. people always think they’re being slick with their fatphobia, but we always know. i wish more media would talk about it, and talk about the realities of what it’s like. fat people are deemed crazy and unreasonable for want accessibility and for wanting to be treated as people, yet those are things that, at the end of the day, would do no harm to middle sized or thin people. no one wants the world to revolve around obesity, people just wanna be able to live their lives like any other person.

    Imagine if Louder and Prouder really was a time skip (like let's say to the girls' freshman year in high school or that summer before freshman year?) and Penny 's current boyfriend, Kareem was actually a fitter Carlos who had lost weight and got fit/healthy because he had played basketball at a sports summer camp (and possibly during middle school). He still had the same interests Kareem does and he actually works with younger kids to help them lose weight and he always sticks up for those who are bullied for being fat/different? One can only dream cause Carlos having lost a great deal of weight and coming back to Proud Family, saying he lost weight because he turned that chubbiness into muscles and he wanted to do it for himself would've been a great glow up and story arc tbh.
    I actually loved this episode because Carlos was one of those rare people who put others before himself and lets all the fatphobic/fatshaming comments roll off his shoulders (tho you can't sit there and tell me it still didn't affect him in the end tho) and he actually did something redeemable like save Bebe and CiCi (I'm sorry if I spelled their names wrong ^^; ) and put Penny's wants/needs before himself (save for getting food obviously).

    This is my preference, but I couldn't care less how attractive people see my body. That's not what I'm looking for anyway. My problem comes from doctors who think everything wrong with my body is because I'm right on the margin of overweight/obese. I agree that obesity is a disease meant to be treated, and I am on an exercise and diet regime that works for me. But, assuming that my weight is the source of what's wrong with me all the time is lazy. It took me almost ten years to be diagnosed with a biological chronic illness because my GPs kept telling me my pain would get better if I lost weight. Look for all the factors and don't jump to conclusions. You don't know what goes on in someone's life.

    Growing up during this time was terrible for body image. It was normal to shame people if they didn't have that Lindsey Lohan or Britney Spears body.
    I think pennys father ruined the message. It was like a backhanded compliment. Doesnt matter what you look like, but still make jokes about what ppl look like.

      exactly. its like the show wanted to teach its young audience a lesson, but couldnt let it go without making sure there was one last dig at a fat person- and by an adult mind you who should be a model of maturity.

    I know he was probably just a one-off character, but I always LOVED Carlos' character when I was a kid watching this show. He was such a sweetheart and looked like he would have been super fun to hang out with regardless if they went on rides or not. And I was glad that they found things to do at the fair/carnival? whatever it was-- been a while since I've watched this episode-- but they found things to do together without having to worry about his size.

    Tbh, I ship Carlos with Olei for some reason. Wish they'd let those two end up together in the reboot. I mean, Olei could get over KG's rejection once and for all and Carlos would have a girl on his side that doesn't judge his appearance and, considering his upbeat "funny fat guy" nature, she might be happier and more talkative in general.

    Okay first of all it's not fat phobia it's fat and tolerance. I'm on the heavy side as well and even I know that it's unhealthy for me to be that way I just work a lot.
    And two I thought that this episode was very wholesome because even though that penny did not end up with him as a boyfriend it's nice to see her being open-minded to that it's more about personality and character than just looks.
    Don't get me wrong I'm all for a healthy lifestyle I really am but character is more important than looks

    This might be a odd thing to talk about with fatphobia, but from what I realized that for girls it's much worse. There will be girls who are chubby not fat, and by default they are called fat, and people do not want to give the the time of day. Like, talk to them, know them, they are just not worth these people's time.
    But if a guy is chubby they are not seen as fat. They are seen as normal, and people will talk to them, find them funny or be there friend. These are things I've noticed early on, and as someone who was a chubby kid I was always given fat jokes by a lot of guys. Didn't matter if I ran faster then most guys who where skinnier then me. Didn't matter if I could touch my toes with out bending my knees, while most kids couldn't, or it didn't matter that I could go up the stairs and down the stairs no problem in highschool just fine, while most of my skinny friends or classmates had to take a moment to breathe cause it was too much on them. It didn't matter. I was fat no matter what, and this effected me a lot, but now I am bigger then ever before and love myself.
    Also helps that my mom doesn't steal my clothes anymore, and people don't think I am like 18 years old. That's a plus too.

    Man I've been without any power for a bit, missed a bit.
    I remember this episode and it totally changed the way I viewed larger people. It gave me more empathy toward them. I grew up with a fat shaming mother and I've struggled with eating disorders. I do not find fat jokes funny, At. All.
    Bigger people, sure, they might "choose" to eat a lot, but that shouldn't condem people to a life of being teased.
    I'm constantly seeing people say awful things about fat people, and some people can't wrap their heads around, like you said, thyroid or any health conditions. Likewise, lipoedema is a problem but it's still not really medically recognized in the USA as it is elsewhere.
    The hate and ridicule that fat people get is unnecessary, rude, it's bullying, plain and simple, and it is unhelpful for them to lose weight, and conversely it makes people who are like me, having struggled with anorexia, afraid to *gain* weight.
    I feel that it affects people from every walk of life, and it's not cool.

    Talking about obesity in any negative way nowadays is considered "fatphobic". Just saying that there's an obesity crisis in America is enough to get called fatphobic. Rebel Wilson (there was another actor too) got called fatphobic just for losing weight and getting into shape. People were mad that she got healthy.
    Look, I don't think people should be bullied or made fun of for being fat. Do I still think they should get into better shape? Yes. I acknowledge that losing weight is difficult. I've never had to, but I have seen family members try. Mental health, addiction, and disease can also be factors. But this doesn't change that being overweight is unhealthy. I've watched family members struggle with these health problems cause by weight. My aunt is overweight, and she can't stand up. She's in the hospital at least every month- sometimes more.
    I'm an honest person and in all honesty, I wouldn't date someone who was overweight. I don't find fat women attractive. I wouldn't find a woman with a beard or body odor attractive either. It's just preference. But besides that, I'm also a skinny person; I want to be with someone the same size as me. Lastly, as I've said, I've seen family members like my aunt struggle with weight related health problems. I wouldn't wanna watch someone else deal with that.

    ok what if the new version of the proud family, louder and prouder, is about how other people view the black experience? maybe that is why some of these topics like the colorism episode fell short, because thats whats closer to reality. i wonder how the new show would handle fat phobia he was a cool guy.
