Personally I prefer old fashioned analogue dials. They have.a more mechanical thing about them - the whole idea that your motorcycle is a piece of mechanical engineering that smells of oil and fuel as opposed to an electric computer game sort of appliance without character. But then I like the vintage smiths chronometric.speedos. When electric takes over, I'm out.

Can’t we just connect to an app to get that information, and just rely on a simple elegant display while riding

BMW have it sussed on the GS. I still reckon the BEST TFT around atm is the new Indian one! It's small and round, like the new Triumph one but is also touch screen (with gloves!). Uses large icons and just looks very nice and functional. Keep up the great work Andy!

The Trident TFT is just okay, which makes it a big improvement over its predecessors. Triumph should start with a BMW TFT and a Kawasaki Z650 TFT and pretty much copy them. A round shape works well on analog instruments but just looks strange on an MFD. All I want on my color TFT is large clear speed and rpm, with smaller gear indicator and fuel gauge in the corners, and a couple of warning lights. That's all. Nothing more.

  • @sv650nyc7
    @sv650nyc7 3 ปีที่แล้ว

That TFT is worse than an LCD made in 2006 and worse than even analog clocks. So much wasted space in an already small circumference. The tach and speedo displays are laughably tiny. And who really needs to see the current date?
All I want to see at one glance is RPMs, speed, gear, coolant temp, and either fuel level, distance to empty or trip counter. This needs to be visible without having to switch between screens, multiple times at that. The way it is on the Trident is so annoying, it seems it was designed by someone who's never ridden a motorcycle before.
Why not integrate the idiot lights in a bigger TFT display, and one that doesn't require constant switching to get all the info I'm getting now on my 2006 bike? Either make it look analog or fully digital. Doing it both ways just looks cheap.
How about having the brightness auto adjust as any cheap cell phone screen has been capable of for many years? The last thing I want to do is to have to adjust the brightness constantly. Design it so the display can be read well in all lighting conditions. Otherwise you might as well go back to analog clocks like on the Twins.
How about emulating some classic analog clocks that can be changed, similar to what's possible on the Tiger 900?

Not a fan of technology for technologies sake , what for instance would happen if that TFT went wrong out of warranty ? how much would it cost for a new one or get the old one repaired ? its not just a case of ordering a speedo cable from WEMOTO and that's it sorted is it . Remember when there was a horsepower war between manufacturers , R1s V GSXRs V ZX10s ect well this is the same thing but with tech , nobody really needs it , legally all you need is a speedo that works LOL I can see in the future there will be conversion kits back to analogue clocks for bikes like this . be interesting to see what happens down the road , maybe it would be interesting to ask the question to Triumph or BMW ect what would be the cost of replacement of a TFT in the event of a crash . Nowt wrong with a nice clock face , they've been around for hundreds of years , nice review Andy as always , this grumpy old git has had his rant , I'll get me coat LOL

  • @ccooper8785
    @ccooper8785 3 ปีที่แล้ว

At 2:20 you mention TFT's biggest downside; Reflections !!!!
If manufacturers insist on fitting these things then they should at least make their angle of tilt adjustable and provide surrounds that act as sunshades.
With the traditional twin-dial displays you just have to glance at them to see your speed and revs as opposed to the TFT where you actively have to read (decipher) the information.
As with many of the new "must haves" on bikes it is more often style over substance.

There's only so much information I want when I'm riding and I've never felt the need for rider aids and different modes but then again I've never owned a bike with more than 120HP.
Apart from speedo and rev counter I see a need for a clock and fuel level meter and maybe a gear indicator is sometimes useful but that's all I would ever want or need. If you need different modes for rain, track and road etc then you haven't mastered throttle control, not many people take high powered bikes out in the rain so I feel that mode is more of a 'safety net' for the inexperienced as is traction control.
All the extra buttons and switches on the bars and options on the dash add another level of complexity which could actually be a little distracting, in my opinion less is more !
I assume that analogue gauges are far too expensive to make these days in comparison to digital gauges so we are unlikely to see them on bikes anymore but it was always the best looking setup for displaying the relevant info so digital gauges should be arranged in the same format, they also need to be less cluttered, square screens look terrible IMO.

Hey Andy yep bloopers get worse with age my friend ! totally agree I also think less is more and pretty soon you will need a load of laptop programs to do anything on your bike , it looks like they are going the way of cars with service lights that you have to get turned off by the dealer, So when you service your own bike unless you have the necessary program you can not turn the warning light off even when you may have sorted the problem . Sorry not for me and forget the Euro five stuff as well I am happy being a dinosaur cheers . : D

The clicky buttons on the Trident do look better than the joystick on my Speed Triple, plus the Trident has an ignition KEY !
Your suggestion of twin round TFTs that can usually be analogue dials is pretty good, although I do like watching the physical needles on my Speed Twin.
I think the TFT on my Speed Triple is fine, and suits the bike, but for retro looking bikes it really needs to be a pair of physical dials, with small LCD inserts, like the Speed Twin / Thruxton. I guess the small LCD bits on the Speed Twin/Thruxton could go TFT.
When Triumph get their TFTs wrong, it's not so much the TFT, as it is the way they're displaying the information. Bars that expand out and look like a sound level meter from a 1980s Hi Fi.
I have to agree, and because they're "retro-ish" the Rocket 3 and big Scrambler would have looked a whole lot better with the pair of clocks off the Speed Twin or Thruxton.
The clocks on the Rocket and Scrambler do look a bit 1950s sci fi.
With bluethooth phone connectivity and an app, a lot of detailed information and twiddling that TFTs are needed for could really be done on a phone screen, and keep the dash nice and clean. It's not like you can really look at over complicated TFT minute details when riding. All you need then is speed, revs, fuel level and a few warning lights.
Not much consolation to Triumph, there are worse displays out there. Try the Honda CB inverted LCDs. Can't see them in bright sunlight. Although I do see Honda have fixed the 2021 CB1000R, with a TFT !
Finally I notice you're maximising making us watch to the end for the outtakes. As Denis Norden might have said "It'll be alright on the night !"

I guess it's horses for courses Mr Flyer. I agree that on some of the modern retro-style bikes, a set of clocks is more authentic than an full-on TFT display. That said, on my Tiger 1200 I really like the TFT, and the 'fiddliness' of the joystick only lasted a few weeks.
Ultimately I think it's all about context - what works on some bikes feels odd on others, but for me, on an adventure/tourer, I agree with the way the manufacturers have gone in putting more and more into the TFT modules (the one on the BMW R1250RT is amazing).

Hey, don't like this kind of display at all. Keeping it simple on a beginner bike is probably the best thing. My street tripple (2019) i leave in 1 mode unless it's raining or I'm racing. 90% of the time I'm looking at the speed, not revs. I'd like a more tactile indicator switch for sure. Whilst the old switching was a bit of fiddling, in reality you only adjust it before you set off. Doubt anyone who reads this who has 8 modes of traction control and 5 power modes adjusts more than 1 or 2 of them regularly whilst riding. A good clear speedo, tachometer and gear indicator are the essential things.... the TFT display should be capable of both analogy or digital display types surly. About time the consumer gets better value from the purchase of a premium priced bike. Just saying......

I agree and I disagree (what a shocker!) I agree that TFTs are here to stay, they are a clear improvement over LCDs (like laser printers vs needle printers) but not as nice to look at as analogs.
However - I think BMW have gone too far on some models (latest RT I believe) and they start looking like iPads. I am on my bike to ride, not to watch movies. I am honestly not impressed with the Trident. It reminds me a bit of a children's watch wanting to look adult - or a Chinese knock-off thingy ...
As a rider, what do you really need to see? Do you need to see today's date - NO? Air Temperature - I think is a good one; necessary, no. Incoming messages - BIG NO.
At start up you definitely need to know the status of things, but when riding, the more information there is on your screen the more it can (will?) distract you from the road ahead.

It's really good made looking bike , but even though I am not such a old dog , I don't like does electric dashes that some of em you just don't see really clear in a sun light or they just show too much useless information. We need to keep are eyes on the road not on the "TV" that they mostly put these days there in the middle of our handlebar. RPM,SPEED,FUEL,TEMP,VOLTS and Mileage (maybe and a clock soo you don't forget what time it is :) ) the rest is the advencher , you just don't need more than that !

I like the Trident and its TFT looks good. At the beginning you showed and mentioned the Street triple TFT but the one you showed is from the last model fitted to the R and RS. Only the RS now has a TFT and its changed from the last model and not in a good way. Its so bad its actually putting me off buying one. I really hope Triumph change this soon. I currently have a 390 Duke which has a good TFT and this is on a much cheaper bike. If KTM, Kawasaki and BMW can get it right why can't Triumph?

Yeah absolutely one up for the analog dials and alternative indicators. No need for traction control or reverse gear indicator like on your Goldwing ;-) haha. ABS ok but riding modes...?!. There is, for me, a particular intuitive feeling about speedometers and tachometers. The rest all look like digital dinky toys.

  • @Trevor_Austin

I agree with you regarding this bikes’ TFT display. It looks great. On a philosophical point there is an argument for analogue as well as digital representation of data. My preference for engine RPM is analogue (speed tape or dial) and both for speed. Other variables such as gear, date, time, range, tank contents are probably best shown differently. However, a TFT screen really should allow the rider to get the display they really want, no matter how bizarre, just so long as there is a “back to standard” switch. My suggestion is therefore for manufacturers to sell a TFT toolkit to give third party developers the ability to create their own presentations for their customers’ displays. Then everyone is a winner.
ps. I have been spoilt. Many years ago I flew Fokker 50s. On those Prop RPM, torque and N2 were shown both in sweep dial and digital form - perfection!

Many TFTs look a bit Mickey Mouse. I know there have been issues with Street Triple TFTs failing which is not so bad when the bike's under warranty but would cause me to think twice before buying second hand. I prefer a mix of analogue and TFT, a perfect example is the new Hayabusa.

It looks like two small tft areas in a large housing with glare, it might be a simple layout but if you compare to the full bmw equipment it is a very poor show. It’s not as well laid out or as clear as the Kawasaki tft’s in my opinion. Agree it’s better than the rockets, but apart from build quality as mine went wrong I liked the tiger800’s....but the joystick thing kept sticking...and in the end the 800 just had to many tiny failures.

Triumph have cracked it with this bike! It's the same response by the bike press as when the Street Twin was launched in 2008. Everyone gave it a deserved glowing report.
Incidentally my street twin has the same noise. Not sure whether it's the fuel pump priming. The noise is always there when the ignition is on, but you can't hear it when you start the bike (or it's drowned out by the engine / exhaust). Either way, it runs fine and has had two services with Triumph with no issues reported by the technicians. In all fairness I forgot to mentioned it to the dealer when I dropped the bike off. Hope it's not a warranty claim waiting in the wings....

Digitised analogue would look old. I really like what BMW have done.. it just needs a clever bunch of people and the development money to spend on iterating until you get it right. The cost vs volume of parts, is what drives this. BMW have spread out all the costs by fitting it on most of their bikes, with it minor variations.

Uffda, the joystick alas is not a joy...a bit of dirt on an off road scrambler and it sticks like an egg to a tattered frying pan. I am getting used to the display but wish I could get an update for the lagging gear shift animation especially in night mode. I can do without the animation and just leave the gears ⚙️. It cool on the showroom floor but is there any other time you really watch it? I think it’s more important to watch where I am going and have the right gear displayed when I have been looking around for deer and such and forgot to memorize which gear I’m in. I have tried the other display configuration but found I am not as fond of it for some reason. I reckon it’s some piece of information I desire but apparently not as easy to digest when riding. That’s what happens in winter you get a chance to fall in love with your motorcycle again in the spring. I hope the snow, rain, and temperatures get to a point where it’s not a freeze your junk to the tank ordeal to get out riding again soon.

I have just bought a Triumph Street Triple R, one of the reasons I chose this over the RS was that l much preferred the analogue taco and LCD display on the R. I had a test ride on the RS and found the TFT hard to read, especially at speed. The rev counter that moves out either side on the speed was impossible to see in your peripheral vision. The analogue taco with shift lights on the R is much better. I agree that a TFT replicating an analogue display would be great.
