Yams - With your triumph history, you are probably familiar with tuneecu. Assuming they support the ecu you can beef up throttle response to anything you like. Might be worth checking into while you guys are modding it out.
@@pax1980 That's my hope. I saw there are already some tunes out there for the Trident but (1) They don't provide details on if they address the throttle response issue and (2) I imagine that means bye bye warranty.
Love this bike, but being on disability and not having enough money to take care of myself let alone buy a bike I'll just have to settle for never having a motorcycle in my life, but I can always watch Yammie Noob ride'em and have fun on them, thanks
Just came back to this review with a smile on my face. I've had my Trident for 7 weeks and 1400 miles and absolutely love it. What a fun ride. No noticeable throttle lag. Flicks into corners. Torque everywhere. Quickshifter on order will make it even more fun. After being cooped up for two years, and having not ridden while raising kids, this bike is a gift from the heavens. Thanks Yam and crew for all the great content.
I test rode this today... still can’t believe how good this bike is, it fits my criteria perfectly on what I want on a motorcycle at the moment. Plus Yammie description of it is pretty accurate in most cases (I think he was a salesman or a real estate broker in a past life, this man knows how to sell stuff!). No frills, good looking, well made and a motorcycle brand with legendary reputation. I think we have a winner here.... love at first ride.
I own this bike. I’m a beginner rider and as my first bike, it works well for me. It has punchy power when you open the throttle but it is stable during take off for beginners. I ride it for fun and on Virginian roads, it works well. Highway wind is annoying. Crouching required.
@@utchabayski Yeah. I had one close call. I’m in my late 30s so I’m not an aggressive rider and when I do ride, I’m doing joy rides rather than for commuting. The bike is average in weight when turning with speed. Low speed maneuvering is always risky. The bikes turning circle is not great. Given I am a new rider I bought the frame protection kit. If buying brand new, during the break in period the onboard computer limits your bike so it will feel slower (but safer) to let you gain confidence (and to protect the engine). Once you complete your break in period, the limiters are automatically disabled and you can gain more speed at lower gears. It’s a really cool bike for beginners. I still ride once a week and having clocked 1033 miles in the last two months, I feel it’s pretty forgiving for beginners. The gear change is smooth. Neutral can sometimes be a pain to get to but gear up and down has been easy. I did change out the brake and clutch levers. The clutch lever was non-adjustable and it was pretty spaced out. It can be tiring pulling it in from afar as a beginner as your nerves insist that you keep your hand out there. Hope that helped. Stay safe.

For those wondering... the fast flashing of the RPMs is a "break-in mode" that will indicate when you either need to shift or chill on the revs during the break-in period. This can be disabled in the settings. The brake lever is adjustable, the clutch is NOT. That said, TEC is a UK parts maker that has a division in the US and offers a great set of black adjustable Clutch and Brake lever for about $70 and are excellent quality. the tank is metal but the cover is not, so if you wanted to change the look to a different version ( i wasnt fast enough to secure a matte black so I got the sapphire black same as this vid) I found out from Triumph parts you can swap the tank cover, rear under tail cover, radiator end panels and front fender should you want a different variant look
That front brake complaint is not uncommon for a lot of Triumphs with Nissin calipers. I think it’s the brake pads they use. A set of EBC HH pads improves them massively. This is a compelling bike even for guys like me who own four other Triumphs and have been riding for years. It seems like the perfect commuter bike and fun around-town transport. And I love how its design calls back to the ‘90s Trident, which was itself a more everyday-street-friendly variation on the original Speed Triple.
Honestly that is bullshit. It's ok. But the brake lever and clutch lever feels like it game from an oversized mountainbike. The fit om the japanese bike is better. Almost 3 times higher reliability speaks volumes. That said it's still a nice bike. But better it is not.

First time rider. Just took mine out for the very first time ever yesterday. I don’t have anything to compare it to because it’s my first bike, but it was a great experience. Handles amazingly. My only concern is that trucks looks massive on the road when you’re on a bike😂
Picked up a 2024 matte black a week ago and put 250 miles on it in the first week. First bike for me and I really enjoy this bike. Fantastic choice for me. Every time I take it out I get compliments on it. I agree with your entire review including the part about whether or not it's for a first rider-someone who is a bit older with more emotional control over their faculties and a higher level of maturity hits perfect for the first bike.
If the bike is brand new I am pretty sure that Triumph have a break in programme in the ECU that won't let you access full throttle opening or maximum power. A few more miles on the clock and it will go even better, the beakes might even improve.
Just one more reason I will not consider buying a modern Trumpet. The fake carbs on an EFI bike. That was too much for me. I will be a yeeting hooner til I die.

I've been racing cars for a bit now, and have a respect for power and not being dumb... I just got my permit today, and after I pass my test, I'm so tempted to get this bike in Crystal White for my first. I'll probably get someone's beater 250cc bike for this summer so I can save money and get some experience, but I really, really love how this bike looks, and others seem to be a fan of it, as well. I'm not looking to squid out and get something insane, I just want a peppy commuter that can take a curve, and will be kind to a beginner... bingo. Thank you Triumph and Yammie, you've got me sold.

I got to see two at the dealer when I was getting my new Tiger 900 last week. It was cool to compare the differences between my MT-07 and the Trident. Just from the appearances I really liked the look of the Trident. If I had stupid money I would have brought it home too!
I traded in my 2006 XL1200C for a Trident and man the improvement in technology and performance is almost funny. I did have 14” Ohlins in back and Race Tech springs up front on the Sporty, and clip ons, but it was so HEAVY and the battery drains itself and was cold-blooded, and was carbureted, the stupid battery cover has to be zip tied to stay closed, etc., just kind of a pain, like a young girlfriend. I wanted a basic bike that i could swing a leg over and just ride, that was as light as a 650cc bike could be. Man is this fun. I still have my gargantuan, loud, slow TC88 Road King, which i will never part with, but the Trident is a blast especially over 6K RPM. Just what i wanted. Reminds me of my old 2001 SV650, but even better.
Something sticks with me from your three-way comparo with this bike, the R6 and the ?650. You may not realize you do this, but you step on Whitney when she expresses an opinion you do not expect to hear. Spite will push back when you challenge him, but Whitney just goes quiet. Whitney has a distinct philosophy as a rider, even if she does not have your broad knowledge of motorcycles. I urge you to capitalize on that. Do a review one-on-one with her. Give her the opportunity to graduate to Spite status, doing an occasional review of her own. Your channel will win in the end.

Fml so i was just about to make my mind up between the cbr650r and the mt07 (cbr650r was taking my $ up till now), and now this beautiful trident 660 shows up aaaaahhhhh! So beautiful! Idk what to do now! 🤯🤯
I agree, with the price creep from the MT07 and sv650 over the years and the T660 coming in at 8k is making the cb650r look better and better with age.
I was just at a Triumph dealer buying a Street Triple about a month ago. While waiting on the back office to get the paperwork ready, the salesman tried to get me to test ride a Speed Triple and Daytona, trying to upset me. I took each in a lap around the parking lot as well as a Speed Twin and Tiger 900. But they wouldn't let me even swing a leg over the only Trident they had. If you want one, get yourself on an order list.
I went on Thursday to my local triumph dealer and rode the trident 660 and i must say its an interesting situation going from a traditional to a ride by wire never having ridden one. It seems like its an amazing motorcycle though would be much better with a more beefy sounding exhaust. Going from my ike with a full yoshi to the 660 was just a little quiet.
600 miles for the first service, every 10k for service intervals after the break in service, every 20k for valve clearance check/adjustments. I own a trident in crystal white. The brakes seem great to me but you have more experience with performance bikes with better braking abilities so my ignorance orlack of experience with other bikes may dictate my opinion. Everything else you said it spot on.
I paid cash for my CB650R and its been worth every penny. Been 1 year, and about 7000 miles with no regrets. If the price was maybe like $9500 out the door instead of $10,740 what I paid, definitely be way more of a competitor.
Tramp really got the engineering and styled down just take a look at the rocket 3..... Visited the triumph MW dealer recently and set on the rocket 3 really is balanced pretty well it does not seem that heavy.. Owned most models from speed triple to Daytona 955 speed triple 1050 and tiger 800 .. were all great possibly a minor wiring issue on 2 of them... But that whining sound as it's accelerating... Wonderful design smooth yet plenty of torque..
This could be my next bike.. after a new dual sport. ...I ended up with a Z650 .... I know I know.. but here's the thing... I stumbled across it last year.. 2017 with 10,000 miles(16000kms)... got it for 3500$ CDN $3100USD ... I couldn't pass it up... and to be honest.... the on off sucks and it feels like it handles better than it does.... Road 5 tires... the short wheel base makes it turn quick which fools you into thinking it it handles better than it does. Aside from that.. the power band it really good.. I've had everything from a Vulcan Nomad to a GSXR 750 .. ride what makes you smile... and remember.. it's better to ride a slow bike fast than a fast bike slow....... But you have me in love with the Aprilia... and I've not driven the beloved MT07 which is a good thing because it would ruin me if your blessings are correct!

Triumph really have designed this bike like a BIG bike (900+ccs). But it's a MIDLEWEIGHT. A 650 TRIDENT, WOOOHOOOO!!!! At LAST one of the manufacturers has made a MIDDLEWEIGHT bike that is as "premium" as a litre bike. I've been waiting about 35 years for that! WELL DONE TRIUMPH! And as a Brit myself, it's now a no-brainer. SV 650, Ninja 560, MT7, CB650R are in the weeds. I WANT ONE!!! It's only poverty and my 5+ years of tinnitus (wind noise from bike riding) keeping me off bikes comletely :-( :-( :-( Only one bad thing about this bike. THE SEAT HEIGHT IS TOO HIGH!!! This is a MIDDLEWEIGHT. The kind of thing women and smaller men (me -5'1") will want to ride. So WHY make the seat height the same as the litre bikes (805mm)??? Cue lectures from all and sundry about "cut-down seats" and "lowering links" and yatta yatta yatta........ IT SHOULD NOT NEED IT! Please Triumph, Lower the seat rails, and the seat height, then offer a THICKER SEAT for taller riders!!!!!!!!! Then you WON'T be cutting out a big demographic/market sector (short legs) like you ARE now, with an 805mm seat height.
after everything you said about mounting a windscreen, it could be a challenge for the upgrades: find and mount a nice aftermarket windscreen/shield without ruining the look of the bike :)

I agree. I much prefer to learn the machine and adapt, rather than trying to learn and adapt while the machine is constantly trying "adapt" for you. Leaves a really "muddy" feeling
This bike is what happens when you introduce a Bonneville T100 and a Street Triple 675 to each other at a party and they casually date for a few months.
It's funny when everyone says it's an $8K bike. I bought one completely kitted out and came in well over that. I've never seen the bike sell for only $8K, anywhere! More like $9-10K.
I think this bike is just massively misunderstood. To understand it, you have to answer the question "why?". I think a lot of people would have preferred they just went the honda route. ...just take the street tripple, make the handlebar mount about an inch taller, throw a round headlight on it, figure out a way to mount the dash and call it a day. called it like the street tripple S (for street) or something. ...and whala. channels like this would have loved loved loved it. but they didn't. instead they completely designed it from the ground up. Why? If you understand that, you understand this bike.
Most riders can not tell the difference between Brembo or Nissin brakes. Most people never touch their suspension. It is important for that 1% of racers that are taking bikes to their very limits and then sum. The professional Rider uses the bike as a tool. All the GP bikes make about the same horsepower, the rider brings home the ribbon. This bike is perfect the way it comes from the factory. No stage 4 needed.
I think something like this makes a great 2nd bike coming from a 250. I test rode one today and it felt like a rocket ship. It was the 2nd vehicle to make me scream in exhilaration from the acceleration--first was a C7 Corvette stingray--except the stingray needed full throttle in first gear for that while 75% throttle in 2nd gear on this bike had the same effect.
are you steering with your throttle hand or clutch hand? I dont, on the throttle hand, as twisting can be a problem... so I use the left grip as my steer. :) cheers
I just bought a 2018 Street Triple RS last month and it does have a little bit of throttle slop. Bought a spacer for it from Ducati Spacers and its fine now.
It's probably such a good motorcycle, because when they designed it, they DIDN'T fall prey to the ultra-irritating thing of thinking of it as a "BEGINNER" bike (because it's a 650). They treated it as what it IS, which is what they USED to be called; a M I D D L E W E I G H T bike! N O T a "Beginner" bike. Why does everyone on these videos think that anything less than 1000cc is a "beginner" bike, just because it has a smaller capacity????? Hopefully, Triumph will now lead the way towards lots more MIDDLEWEIGHT bikes being treated as legitimate bikes of DESIRE, rather than something you start on, then ditch, once you've got the money for a "Litre Bike". Okay, when I was learning in the UK, as a learner, you were restricted to 125cc, before you got your licence. Then you got what you wanted - step through, small bike, middleweight or BIG bike (1000cc +). Now the law seems to have changed and you can get middleweight bikes on a learner licence. So there should be specifically designed "beginner" bikes in the middleweight class. But middleweights SHOULD NOT be totally restricted to being designed specifically for learners. And the 660, is not designed primarily for beginners (like teh Ninja 650). But as a MIDDLEWEIGHT bike you truly WANT. EXCELLENT Triumph! I WANT one!!!
Yeah this does my head in too. I have a 1250gs and a ninja 1000 and I'm looking to pick up a 650 naked of some sort because they are fun at road legal speeds and great for filtering through traffic and riding round town. 650cc bikes are just super fun and more affordable. I'd argue the 250-500cc bikes are more beginner specific bikes.
Regarding the front brake, I thought the same as you when I first rode my bike but when the pads bed-in different story. How many miles had you on the clock when this was recorded, not many by the look of the flashing rev counter!!!!!
@@NatsocRevolutionary Dude, it is not, the 660 Aprilia is somewhere between, definately not the MT-09 level, tuono makes around 90hp, which is right around CB650R
@@jirimollin8638 It makes 100hp, while the MT09 makes 115, my point is that comparing a 660 to anything other than a street triple like bike is doing a disservice to the 660, that's like saying "My suped up miata can smoke your Ferrari so its better" well yes but what about the feel of the drive, the cars accessories, the look of the car, etc etc. Anyone whos ever seen a video of how the 660 rolls is kidding themselves if they think it needs to be stacking up against a trident or mt07.

I am hoping for the Daytona 660, with a bit more RPM the engine should be good for 90 HP. And it should fit nicely inbetween the R7 and CBR650R. And they should definitely work on the throttle response!
Throttle spacers might help with the slack. Not sure if this throttle is the same type, but it made a world of difference on my speed twin. TMF did a great video about it.
i just tested the trident this last weekend and i noticed the throttle delay. thought i was crazy. overall, it's a really good bike, but i wasn't blown away by it. very comfortable, great features, handles well, but it feels muted and soulless. while it's a good "beginner bike", i think a more experienced rider who has had bigger bikes will appreciate it more. i can see beginners still wanted more. i'm a beginner with only about 4 months of experience at this point so this is just a newbie opinion.
Dear Yam, I own a Svartpilen 401 now and absolutely love it, but am suitably interested in the Trident. But I just can't get over how bland it looks compared to the 401. As a urban commuter, I think I'll stick to the Husqy (for now).

If the bike is brand new I am pretty sure that Triumph have a break in programme in the ECU that won't let you access full throttle opening or maximum power. A few more miles on the clock and it will go even better, the beakes might even improve.

I've been racing cars for a bit now, and have a respect for power and not being dumb... I just got my permit today, and after I pass my test, I'm so tempted to get this bike in Crystal White for my first. I'll probably get someone's beater 250cc bike for this summer so I can save money and get some experience, but I really, really love how this bike looks, and others seem to be a fan of it, as well. I'm not looking to squid out and get something insane, I just want a peppy commuter that can take a curve, and will be kind to a beginner... bingo. Thank you Triumph and Yammie, you've got me sold.

I got to see two at the dealer when I was getting my new Tiger 900 last week. It was cool to compare the differences between my MT-07 and the Trident. Just from the appearances I really liked the look of the Trident. If I had stupid money I would have brought it home too!

I traded in my 2006 XL1200C for a Trident and man the improvement in technology and performance is almost funny. I did have 14” Ohlins in back and Race Tech springs up front on the Sporty, and clip ons, but it was so HEAVY and the battery drains itself and was cold-blooded, and was carbureted, the stupid battery cover has to be zip tied to stay closed, etc., just kind of a pain, like a young girlfriend. I wanted a basic bike that i could swing a leg over and just ride, that was as light as a 650cc bike could be. Man is this fun. I still have my gargantuan, loud, slow TC88 Road King, which i will never part with, but the Trident is a blast especially over 6K RPM. Just what i wanted. Reminds me of my old 2001 SV650, but even better.

I was just at a Triumph dealer buying a Street Triple about a month ago. While waiting on the back office to get the paperwork ready, the salesman tried to get me to test ride a Speed Triple and Daytona, trying to upset me. I took each in a lap around the parking lot as well as a Speed Twin and Tiger 900. But they wouldn't let me even swing a leg over the only Trident they had. If you want one, get yourself on an order list.

I went on Thursday to my local triumph dealer and rode the trident 660 and i must say its an interesting situation going from a traditional to a ride by wire never having ridden one. It seems like its an amazing motorcycle though would be much better with a more beefy sounding exhaust. Going from my ike with a full yoshi to the 660 was just a little quiet.

600 miles for the first service, every 10k for service intervals after the break in service, every 20k for valve clearance check/adjustments. I own a trident in crystal white. The brakes seem great to me but you have more experience with performance bikes with better braking abilities so my ignorance orlack of experience with other bikes may dictate my opinion. Everything else you said it spot on.
Hopefully u can find a louder underbelly exhaust vs a huge muffler on the side of the bike!

I paid cash for my CB650R and its been worth every penny. Been 1 year, and about 7000 miles with no regrets. If the price was maybe like $9500 out the door instead of $10,740 what I paid, definitely be way more of a competitor.

Tramp really got the engineering and styled down just take a look at the rocket 3..... Visited the triumph MW dealer recently and set on the rocket 3 really is balanced pretty well it does not seem that heavy.. Owned most models from speed triple to Daytona 955 speed triple 1050 and tiger 800 .. were all great possibly a minor wiring issue on 2 of them... But that whining sound as it's accelerating... Wonderful design smooth yet plenty of torque..
This could be my next bike.. after a new dual sport. ...I ended up with a Z650 .... I know I know.. but here's the thing... I stumbled across it last year.. 2017 with 10,000 miles(16000kms)... got it for 3500$ CDN $3100USD ... I couldn't pass it up... and to be honest.... the on off sucks and it feels like it handles better than it does.... Road 5 tires... the short wheel base makes it turn quick which fools you into thinking it it handles better than it does. Aside from that.. the power band it really good.. I've had everything from a Vulcan Nomad to a GSXR 750 .. ride what makes you smile... and remember.. it's better to ride a slow bike fast than a fast bike slow....... But you have me in love with the Aprilia... and I've not driven the beloved MT07 which is a good thing because it would ruin me if your blessings are correct!

Only one bad thing about this bike. THE SEAT HEIGHT IS TOO HIGH!!! This is a MIDDLEWEIGHT. The kind of thing women and smaller men (me -5'1") will want to ride. So WHY make the seat height the same as the litre bikes (805mm)??? Cue lectures from all and sundry about "cut-down seats" and "lowering links" and yatta yatta yatta........ IT SHOULD NOT NEED IT! Please Triumph, Lower the seat rails, and the seat height, then offer a THICKER SEAT for taller riders!!!!!!!!! Then you WON'T be cutting out a big demographic/market sector (short legs) like you ARE now, with an 805mm seat height.

This bike is what happens when you introduce a Bonneville T100 and a Street Triple 675 to each other at a party and they casually date for a few months.
It's funny when everyone says it's an $8K bike. I bought one completely kitted out and came in well over that. I've never seen the bike sell for only $8K, anywhere! More like $9-10K.

I think this bike is just massively misunderstood. To understand it, you have to answer the question "why?". I think a lot of people would have preferred they just went the honda route. ...just take the street tripple, make the handlebar mount about an inch taller, throw a round headlight on it, figure out a way to mount the dash and call it a day. called it like the street tripple S (for street) or something. ...and whala. channels like this would have loved loved loved it. but they didn't. instead they completely designed it from the ground up. Why? If you understand that, you understand this bike.

Most riders can not tell the difference between Brembo or Nissin brakes. Most people never touch their suspension. It is important for that 1% of racers that are taking bikes to their very limits and then sum. The professional Rider uses the bike as a tool. All the GP bikes make about the same horsepower, the rider brings home the ribbon. This bike is perfect the way it comes from the factory. No stage 4 needed.
I think something like this makes a great 2nd bike coming from a 250. I test rode one today and it felt like a rocket ship. It was the 2nd vehicle to make me scream in exhilaration from the acceleration--first was a C7 Corvette stingray--except the stingray needed full throttle in first gear for that while 75% throttle in 2nd gear on this bike had the same effect.
are you steering with your throttle hand or clutch hand? I dont, on the throttle hand, as twisting can be a problem... so I use the left grip as my steer. :) cheers

I just bought a 2018 Street Triple RS last month and it does have a little bit of throttle slop. Bought a spacer for it from Ducati Spacers and its fine now.
It's probably such a good motorcycle, because when they designed it, they DIDN'T fall prey to the ultra-irritating thing of thinking of it as a "BEGINNER" bike (because it's a 650). They treated it as what it IS, which is what they USED to be called; a M I D D L E W E I G H T bike! N O T a "Beginner" bike. Why does everyone on these videos think that anything less than 1000cc is a "beginner" bike, just because it has a smaller capacity????? Hopefully, Triumph will now lead the way towards lots more MIDDLEWEIGHT bikes being treated as legitimate bikes of DESIRE, rather than something you start on, then ditch, once you've got the money for a "Litre Bike".
Okay, when I was learning in the UK, as a learner, you were restricted to 125cc, before you got your licence. Then you got what you wanted - step through, small bike, middleweight or BIG bike (1000cc +). Now the law seems to have changed and you can get middleweight bikes on a learner licence. So there should be specifically designed "beginner" bikes in the middleweight class. But middleweights SHOULD NOT be totally restricted to being designed specifically for learners. And the 660, is not designed primarily for beginners (like teh Ninja 650). But as a MIDDLEWEIGHT bike you truly WANT. EXCELLENT Triumph!

I have a 1250gs and a ninja 1000 and I'm looking to pick up a 650 naked of some sort because they are fun at road legal speeds and great for filtering through traffic and riding round town.
650cc bikes are just super fun and more affordable. I'd argue the 250-500cc bikes are more beginner specific bikes.
Regarding the front brake, I thought the same as you when I first rode my bike but when the pads bed-in different story. How many miles had you on the clock when this was recorded, not many by the look of the flashing rev counter!!!!!

@@jirimollin8638 It makes 100hp, while the MT09 makes 115, my point is that comparing a 660 to anything other than a street triple like bike is doing a disservice to the 660, that's like saying "My suped up miata can smoke your Ferrari so its better" well yes but what about the feel of the drive, the cars accessories, the look of the car, etc etc. Anyone whos ever seen a video of how the 660 rolls is kidding themselves if they think it needs to be stacking up against a trident or mt07.

I am hoping for the Daytona 660, with a bit more RPM the engine should be good for 90 HP. And it should fit nicely inbetween the R7 and CBR650R. And they should definitely work on the throttle response!
Take whichever you find at a good price ,used.
Throttle spacers might help with the slack. Not sure if this throttle is the same type, but it made a world of difference on my speed twin. TMF did a great video about it.

Couldn’t agree more on the throttle delay, I test rode one and I thought there was something wrong with it.
i just tested the trident this last weekend and i noticed the throttle delay. thought i was crazy. overall, it's a really good bike, but i wasn't blown away by it. very comfortable, great features, handles well, but it feels muted and soulless. while it's a good "beginner bike", i think a more experienced rider who has had bigger bikes will appreciate it more. i can see beginners still wanted more. i'm a beginner with only about 4 months of experience at this point so this is just a newbie opinion.
