    I'm fine with it in theory, but I do think the russian criminal tattoo shirt is pretty tacky, and shock-valuey. dig the Gucci gloves though, and I think if an artist did a collab with one of these companies, and I could justify the price I would consider adding it to my wardrode

    My mom actually hates that I get tattoos because they remind her of my grandpa who had a lot of russian prison tattoos and was a pretty shitty guy in general (I actually never met him but I wonder what prison tattoos he had)
    Oh and btw that's not a castle. It's a church and the number of domes represent how many times you've been sentenced.

    I like the idea of tattoo clothing. It allows people to give it a try, let them understand why we “tattooed people” have tattoos. I’d like to get the gloves just to see what a hand tattoo would look like. Side note, is it bad to think it would be funny if they made a face mask thing for face tattoos?
    Thanks for the video.

    • @americarex4461
      @americarex4461 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Would be more suitable showing our own tattoos in my opinion. I started a company that does that. Your tattoos embroidered onto clothing. Not some images you don't understand, don't know the artist... but YOUR tattoos.

    I actually think it's a good idea for non tattooed people who want tattoos to try having them on their body non permanently before they commit to a lifetime commitment of getting tattoos. Also if people want tattoos but can't get visable tattoos due to jobs etc I don't see a problem with them wearing tattoo clothing

  • @MonsterXfoxy

    I think this fashion trend is harmless tbh as long as it isn't designed with shitty symbolism/hate speech or copying real tattoos that are on others unless they gave permission. I can see where it might be weird to people with tattoos, but you have to think about perspectives on why people would wear it.
    A lot of westerners are privileged to be able to cover their body in tattoos, especially places where everyone can project being an individual and also still get a job with them. Like in Japan or any other Asian countries where openly being an individual comes with judgment in their society; tattoos are seen as taboo, though it has gotten a lot better, still they can't get a job with visible tattoos (heck even dying their hair a lighter brown is seen as a delinquency), can't go to some beaches or onsens, their parents see it as such a devastating thing what they did to their bodies and could even get shunned out of the family.
    Skin conditions can also be another reason, they can be allergic to ink or basically any sort of thing where their skin can't take the process of a needle constantly going over the same area of skin without it causing immense damage.
    I think it's cool and maybe even a chance for independent artists that design/manufacture clothes with their art to have another opportunity to have a different kind of merch. They could even take commissions, like custom "tattoo" design mesh shirts of tattoos for people that have tattoo art in mind that they would get on their bodies if they were able.

    I only have one issue/frustration with high end brands doing this. I’m a fashion model that has tattoos including a sleeve, and I have gotten fired or given a really hard time for my tattoos by high end companies. But if this trend allows models with tattoos to be more of the norm, that’ll be really great.

    In New Zealand you often see Maori tattoo designs on clothing especially sports wear and tourist clothing. In fact air New Zealand was in some controversy recently when it came out that they had a “no visible tamoko “ policy and yet their uniforms always have tamoko designs on them. The airline did say this policy was up for review (tamoko is the Maori tattoo that shows your family and life story etc).

    Yesterday I got a very traditional rose tattoo. I was pretty shocked I found myself attracted to this style. Upon some reflection I realized those awful Ed Hardy tee shirts (and some lame episodes of tattoo competition shows) were why I was kind of rejected the American traditional style for so long. I thought they were kind of gaudy because the association was so strong. I guess the moral of this story is if you're going to merchandise the tattooed aesthetic, make sure you're designing cool clothes. If you don't you might just ruin a wonderful style of art for someone.

    The first (modern, mechanised) tattoo shop was in New York and belonged to an Irish fellow named Sam O'Reilly. He saw a new invention of Thomas Edison's, the electric pen, which did largely the same thing that a tattoo machine does with the needle moving in and out through several sheets of paper to make weird perforated duplicates and thought that it would be much easier than old-fashioned hand tattooing. With a bit of a redesign, he had his first tattoo machine and began tattooing sailors coming into port in New York!

    So the skintight tattoo top trend in high fashion happened a looong time ago. Maison Margiela did it in 1989, then reprinted them for H&M in 2012. This kind of showed up again on runways a couple seasons ago. Now that influencers have latched on it will be dead in a few months, you’ve got nothing to worry about

    I’m Russian and live in Moscow and I’d say that there aren’t that many people who have prison tattoos, but I’ve definitely come across a few of them. Normally it’s very heavily tattooed elderly men and honestly they look kinda scary. I would maybe get one myself but I wouldn’t want them to recognize it so I either won’t do it at all or maybe do it in an easily covered place. But also, I do live in Moscow and it is possible that there are more actual people from prison with those tats in other parts of the country. Also, most of the tattoo shops I’ve been to have the books you’ve shown (idk if this is a thing in the US but in Russia tattoo shops usually have a little book shelf with books about tattoos or other interesting visual things that inspire some of the artists). Anyway, good vid as usual!

    I think Issey Miyake was first to create this type of tattoo clothing, since he created a "tattoo dress" for his 1971 collection inspirerd by his native Japan Irezumi culture, and was extremly taboo. Kansai Yamamoto should also be mentioned here (who was the creator of various Ziggy Stardust/David Bowie performance costumes).
    But two designer that came after (that both were inspired by the Avantgarde fashion that Issey Miyake is known for) is Masion Martin Margiela and Jean Paul Gaultier. Masion Martin Margiela (known for his deconstruction and ahead-of-his-time creations) presented at his 1989 ss show, a "tromp l'oeil tattoo top", and later in 2012 - in collaboration with H&M- they made among other clothing pieces a re-edition of the tattoo top, but instead of the original semi-sheer printed silk, this was made in cheaper non-transparent material.
    Jean Paul Gaultier called his 1994 ss collection "Les Tatouages", and feautered various tattoo styles and also referenced Margielas own version. Also Gaultier made a collaboration, but instead with Lindex in 2014, in which a few tattoo printed items were included.
    This new version of tattoo clothing that the brand Vetements (creator is Demna Gvasalia - a former employee at Margiela) created for their 2019 ss, is a form of hommage to Margiela but at the same time making a reference to Gvasalias own Georgian heritage, and that's why there is prints of Russian prison tattoos. But needed to be said, Vetements is known for copying or mimicing Margielas great design, for example the famous tabi shoe.

    I actually have and Ed Hardy jacket that I get so many compliments for. I love it too. It doesn't have the crazy rhinestones though. I think if more items looked like my jacket it would be cooler.... I think as you said the type of people who are imagined to wear it more often are more disliked than the actual clothing.
    I think the tattoo skin shirts are a little weird. Not weird like ew that is lame, but just kind of weird to look at at first because of the flesh color sort of thing.
    I actually has not seen this around until this video... I am not interested in this trend. This seems like a funny halloween costume.

    I'm going to answer this as a tattoo artist. At first i thought ''I don' t care''. But then I realized what does it mean that Gucci and other big names started to do this kind of tattoo related accesories. As always in few months big fast fashion companies orobably are going to copy this trend. And these people are not stupid, they know how tattoos are popular now. How is that problematic (in my opinion)? One of the major reasons why I love my job is that it's not a modern way to make money on art. Think about it. Usually when modern artist are creating their stuff, its to buy it and sell with a profit. Like for example cool illustrations in magazines or posters or commercial. You don't create personal piece, you are selling it to somebody who will use it somehow to make more money. I'm not saying its wrong but personally i prefer to work with tattoos. It's a slow, personal process. You are working with one client at a time, creating unique pieces for them. And then the final result of this is not something that later they can make money on. And with no big companies involved! Another thing is that me and many many tattoo artist i know from Europe are people of good ethics and are kind of against all the shit of this world . To think that fast fashion brands that we hate would create tattoo related product its just... Disgusting to me. Another problem is that VERY often those brands are stealing designs from young illustrators on instagram. I hope they will not focus their attention on tattoo artists accounts now... I guess I'm against situation in which fast fashion brands copy this trend and start making their dirty money on it. As long as it stays on a high fashion shelf I guess Im ok. Sorry for language mistakes, english is not my first language. Heyy, if you want to see cool polish tattoos made in France check my instagram agatazlotko.tattoo

      @americarex4461 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree 100% "It's a slow, personal process. You are working with one client at a time, creating unique pieces for them." I make tattoo clothing. Embroidered shirts. One shirt, one customer. And I make them... I don't send them away to be made. I do my embroidery designs from a person's current tattoos. They get to wear the shirt and show their tattoos to the world (great for winter, office life, family gatherings, etc.) Great for sideboob or back tattoos so you are not always taking your shirt off and on. I don't like this Big Business version of tattooing. But working one on one with a client and producing one high quality piece of art.... feels great. IG @inksideoutapparel

    I completely forgot about those Ed Hardy shirt trend. I freaking loved those shirts as a kid. My parents have a strong hate for tattoos but those shirts they didn't mind so I had several. It is so funny how completely tacky those shirts are but I loved them so much as they were the only ties I had to tattoos. That and temporary tattoos. Of course it made sense for me to not be allowed to have tattoos back then, but I think from then on I knew one day I wanted tattoos. Not necessarily even in that style, just tattoos in general.

    Please do a Russian prison tattoo talk Tuesday 🖤🖤🖤
    Also: i have family members as well not chill with my tats. The one whose feeling i care about i just bring a pineapple to her whenever i get one. She seems pretty chill with the trade off.

    I live in an ex USSR country and I have a bunch of traditional tattoos like roses, skulls, and stuff like that and one time a heavily tattooed homeless man took out a knife on me yelling i shouldn't get tattoos if i don't know what they mean lol so yeah being tattooed in Russia could potentially be dangerous and you shouldn't be showing off too much

    I think it's too soon to really know whether we should embrace or disown this trend and for right now we should just keep our minds open. I think there are both positive and negative ways these clothes can be represented but I'm hoping that in this day and age it'll be overwhelming positive.

    Nice video 👋🏻👍🏻As a very tattooed woman "fully sleeved and a few on my lower legs,shoulder blades,fingers,base of my neck"🙈I love showing them off when I feel like it or covering them up ...Tattoo clothing is cool ,but the industry goes a little crazy with designs sometimes"Tacky or cliche" ,or charging ridiculous prices 🤦😓You might as well get real ones ...lol I love me a hint of a tattoo inspired image on clothing"like your top" 😎🖤✍🏼My opinion though.✌🏻

    The playboy reaper may be the same image.... but you don't have it on your stomach and chest. My company embroiders your tattoos where they are on your skin. So when people see you wearing it. It's not for everyone. But for people wanting to show their ink all the time.... this is the way. Called Inkside Out Apparel
