I was looking for Gardner's and I looked right past the single line of "Panel Channels" enough times that it made me want to comment about it. Love the channel!

The Asus thing was about asus inventing charges, looking for anything to charge them for and hold the customer at ransom. They didn't even address the actual repair claim. Its def not them just being bad at their jobs or using google translate, they are actively looking for charges

Yes. Seems like it's totally a scam. Instead of issuing a recall you're making the customer subsidize the recall.
I RMA a motherboard with ASUS but that was back in the Pentium 4 era. They just sent me a refurb board, no questions asked. Obviously, their policy has changed since then. Their network products so far have been amazing so far too. Most network products I buy usually burn up after a year or two. I have three asus routers and they've been running for over 4 years so far.

I feel like retro needs to take in elements of what everyone said.
In the early 2000s, there were huge technological leaps between games made then and 10 years prior. So the combination of games not being new along with giant leaps in technology made it easy to call 10 year old games retro.
Fast forward to today, and we have diminishing returns on technology and what humans can perceive, so the technological leap is far important in the retro distinction because some games may still feel retro without those huge technological leaps.
Now Russ said availability, which I feel is another factor, but not the end all be all. For instance, we can still get the origional Morrowind, Daggerfall, and some Valve games made in the late 90s on Steam. While many games from their eras (console generations) are not available, that is more of an indication of a failure to preserve games that could easily have be preserved if not for greedy corporations.
Now the first two conceptual ideas that were shared were about how Dark Souls 2 is very similar to modern souls-like games and how average game aethetics and mechanics have changed. I feel like this is getting at the core of it.
When we look at physical print books, the technology is all pretty similar. It is all words on a page. But style, themes, and changes in cultures can separate what stories are deemed classics and what stories are seen as modern or contemporary.
Of course, some games go for a retro feel and some games are ahead of their time, but if we look at common styles, themes, and gameplay mechanics for a console generation and compare it to now, if it seems simalar and feels similar then maybe it should be called a modern game and if it feels old or dated, it should be seen as retro.
I also wonder if remakes can also alter our idea of retro. Like some games 15 years ago may have only been in 720 p and then the games get remade for 4k screens, helping to make the old (old mechanics, old art styles, but newer graphics and game rendering) feel modern again. For example, thaje Skyrim. Should Skyrim, which came out in 2011 be seen as retro? And does the fact that Bethesda made minor improvements with the Special Editions and then the Anniversary Edition affect that? And does games which get updated to an HD version affect if we see the original game as retro or not? (on the one hand, there is a remake, on the other hand, it is bringing outdated styles and game play to the modern era so it may make the original game feel retro while making games from the same era feel more modern if gameplay was not improved)
I feel like we may have retro gray areas where some games from certain eras may both feel a little dated (especially with gameplay mechanics), but, at the same time, not feel so dated as the games we firmly think about as "retro".
Then there are different generations of people. Young adults now may see any game from their childhood (or earlier ... i.e. before they were born) as retro, but I am a Millenial and I think all the podcasters are Millenials too? And I feel like home consoles (especially 3-D gaming at least) really took off when we were kids, and we may look at any game that came out in our adulthood, especially if it came out on Steam, as feeling like it was not that long ago. So, on average, a Gen X, a Millenial, and a Gen Z may have different cut offs for retro gaming simply because our different life milestones happened at different times and the games we associate with milestones, like childhood, teen years, early adulthood, ... are different.

It's funny, but "retro" in gaming has a different meaning than in other contexts. In other contexts, "retro" means something new that has something about it that is like something old, while "vintage" is usually used to describe something old. In gaming, they call both actually old games and games that are new but are like old games "retro." I feel like the way the terminology has developed is unfortunate in lacking that distinction.

I was born in the early 2000s. I can't have nostalgia for "retro" games because I did not grow up with them so my concept of a "retro game" became any game that was released before I personally got into gaming. For me that's anything before the Wii/Xbox 360/PlayStation 3. I know it's a self-centered definition, but because it fits pretty well with other people's "retro" definition, my concept developed that way naturally.

ASUS' RMA is a QC issue after purchase, and for most devices they sell it's def going to affect your ownership of anything you buy from them if it breaks you essentially don't get a warranty with it unless you jump through their hoops and hope it's smooth and is sorted out.
My standpoint is buy (insert product here) with the assumption that I'm not going to get to use the warranty and am I going to be ok with that.
Buddy of mine had their flow z13 tablet pc and they refuse to sell the ***DETACHABLE*** keyboard separately and for him to get his fixed he has to go through an out of warranty repair and pay hundreds of $$ to replace it. literally inexcusable in regards of hardware support for their devices.

I'm glad you didn't say it is a scam, but you and Russ should be careful saying it's not a scam also. Because theres a LOT of evidence that is is indeed a scam. You're giving a lot of credit to a billion dollar corporation and making excuses for them, that's a bad look.

I haven't experienced the terrible RMA process that others have. Because of that I don't feel like I can level accusations at ASUS. We're also not Gamers Nexus who has resources and lawyers to defend themselves against giant corporations.
All I'm saying is I judge the hardware based on my experience with it. I think the RMA issues that GN has shown are absolutely terrible. But I can't prove that they are intentional or accidental. Because of that I'll stick to just reviewing the hardware in front of me.

I trust valve ;-D and the past shows that it's a trustful company! Sadly the word monopoly is again used wrong in this podcast! A monopoly would be if valve would be the only company which sells games on the pc. But it's not like that... there are many game stores on the pc, including the windows built in microsoft store! If someone has a monopoly it's apple, microsoft, nintendo or sony. Valve's steam is more successful than other game stores on the pc, but that doesn't mean it's a monopoly. It's called competition.

46:01 - For me retro is defined by the hardware. Any console designed or UI for consumer/prosumer analog CRTs 240p, 480i, 480p, 1080i is retro hardware through either composite, svideo, RGB through either SCART or dsub or component. That's everything up to 6th gen with 7th gen as partial. Then as things switch to 1080p through HDMI as a standard, that's a shift in technology. Computers, digital CRTs, arcades and handhelds complicate this example. Though PC CRTs even with higher resolutions still use an analog signal. Handhelds have always used LCDs. The consumer TVs that use a digital chassis are maybe the odd example but fits within that transitional 6-7th gen. So I'd agree 6th gen with 360/PS3/Wii is the last half step generation before the shift to modern standards.

  • @angrygnome4304
    @angrygnome4304 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

Retro typically starts around 20 years in the past and the 7th gen is already hitting retro status with some consoles like the DS and PSP which released in 2004 conveniently 20 years ago. This means the 360, Wii and PS3 will all start feeling retro within the next few years.

    • @jimdoom2276

I dunno abt that so much, I still have my 360 connected to a TV in the spare room, play it now and then and there doesn't feel nearly as big of a gap as previous gen consoles. Gaming hasn't advanced linearly, like at all. Massive jumps early on, but slowed to incremental progress now.

Ten years has been a more common definition of retro in the past (q.v. Retronauts), but I do think most people intuitively extend that definition as the overall life of video games extends. I guess what we need is to hear from someone who is 25 about whether they think of a childhood system for them is retro, because that would speak to whether the ten-year gap still makes sense.

    • @jeremy__hopkins
      @jeremy__hopkins 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

The nostalgia element of games shifts over time but the standards that physical standards that define gaming haven't really changed in the past 15 years. It's a smaller jump from 720p - 4k through HDMI on a flat panel versus RF on a 14 inch CRT to 32 inch CRT with component. Then the 25-30 year jump from a CRT in the 80's to the early OLEDs is significant.

On the Steam library & monopoly conversation... Ever since I got into PC handhelds, and because of the Sony censorships that have been happening to Asian/Japanese games (also the PS5 doesn't get anything notable outside of Demon's Souls Remake)... the majority of my purchases now, like 99.9% of my purchases are now on PC... especially Steam.
Same as it was said on the show, Steam is very convenient... I have multiple PC devices: a ASUS ROG Gaming High-end Laptop, the Lenovo Legion Go, and a HP Elite Mini PC with a dedicated Nvidia card. One purchase allows me to use and play all those games in any of these different form factors/devices, don't have to worry about backwards compatibility, I have PS3/X360 era games that I have access too... and even older Floppy Disk games from like 30 years that run fantastic through something like DOSBOX, Emulation is best on PC, the diversity in gaming on PC outside & with Steam is just so much better, also fan-made games, mods for already existing games that expand them, Parsec online solid multiplayer streaming/remote play with very low latency with friends for games that have no netplay including emulation that either the netplay isn't as good or glitchy, etc.
Now with the Steam Family beta plan and being able to share my purchases with 5 other people in my family group, it saves me money, and allows me to share my joyous library to others... especially people that I have added to my family that are just getting into PC gaming to have a complete food buffet and start really engaging with PC gaming, and even push them to get their own copy of a game in my Library if it has Online Multiplayer... we'll need 2 copies in the family group to play together... it's such a good idea. Ever since I got the Asus ROG Ally (gave it to my brother) and now that I have the Lenovo Legion Go... I've spent over $1k in Steam games... I've grown my collection by like 200+ games because of these devices, and will spend more now... because of the incentive of Family Sharing beta... now I always think: "If I buy it here instead of another storefront or on console... 1. Library becomes bigger, all in one place & 2. other people get to enjoy and benefit from these purchases in my Family Sharing beta group + -> Extra reason #3. It's PC, and there's mods or there will be mods at some point + parsec remote play online for those local couch only games".
On the Moderation or lack of it part with Rich, don't know what he means by that... if he means what gets in their store and what's not... I prefer lack of moderation and don't care too much about curation... the filters are there for that, I don't want a filter that some good/unique games might get caught in the net and are unable to publish because of some weird nebulous reason, I don't want them to start refusing games because they don't have a ESRB rating, or only limit them up to M for mature games... with no inclusion of Adult Only games that push the boundaries a bit more, and no... it doesn't have to be sex & porn games when I mean by Adult Only... just like having all of the choices... because as the biggest digital PC store... the moment they start making arbitrary decisions like that based on content (outside of Scams & stolen IPs/Content being published by people that don't own it) is when I will start losing trust on Steam... as a monopoly (which it already is) that no longer has free choice & consumer friendly at the forefront of their philosophy.
Let there be shovelware if it means no games get left behind... I know what I want, word of mouth and shows like this from content creators keep me aware enough that I won't miss the good games, but I don't want the moderation filter to catch some good/unique games for weird, mysterious, nebulous arbitrary reasons. So I'm fine without official moderation/curation... we have filters and steam curating groups made by customers who use the service already that you can follow and be on top of what are the big highlights in gaming depending on the genre or if it you're looking for stuff that was made in the east.
Let the free open market decide what is successful and what it's not... and because of the Steam Family sharing beta... I want to make these purchases on Steam. Don't care if the games are memes, garbage, Adults only including extreme gore beyond M-rated nature or porn, unrated, controversial topics in the game, etc... let me have the choice as a free thinker of what I can & will not support with my money, the market will decide in the end. Just have the proper filters for those that don't want to see certain content and scams+stolen games outside of Steam and you're gucci. Don't bar games because of weird, unexplained, behind the scenes personal politics... because then I will start to question my trust on Steam and my future purchases. Also don't force censorship on games, let it release as it is... no need to get a so called Hentai Patch outside of Steam, those games should just have a toggle or have the so called Hentai Patch as a free DLC option. Accommodate all of your customers and player bases when it comes to having no limitations on what can be published on Steam... as long as it's not illegal (can make stuff regional if the laws change from country to country that make some publishing illegal on Steam... just don't allow that content on that regional store, but don't punish the whole world for it), clear scams & stolen IP/Content games being published. That's it... anything else, you're doing too much.

Steam or Valve are not a monopoly at all. They are the most successful company in digital gaming marketplace right now. But, there are plenty of other stores. And we have to think a little more broadly than just the PC space here. There's Xbox / Microsoft game store. Epic. Amazon. GOG. Google Play. Apples app store... Indie game stores exist as well. There's a ton of options. Most importantly, Valve has been very open to having other game stores on its steam deck. If, for example, they refuse to allow installation of other products or products not directly on steam on the steam deck then we would have a point of frustration there. But the fact again that steam deck is not a dominant piece of hardware, there is no monopoly. There's a huge difference between being wildly successful and being a monopoly. We could argue that Nintendo has a monopoly on handhelds because they're wildly successful. But that would be untrue. Similarly, steam is widly successful but not a monopoly within the digital marketplace space.

the likes of google/facebook/etc can and have been actioned as a monopoly because in their cases there is monetary rewards/incentives to use them and that is why they end up monopolys, valve does no such thing, they are just "the better choice" for gamers so they choose it, they also have perfectly healthy competition, if that competition is failing then thats due to their own practices which gamers do not always like.

I would say that the 20 years of gaming has continued the same style.
Take Unmetal is a retro game made in 2021. This can be said because it reflects a style modern games don't tend to use. But many AAA games today play close enough to the games 20 years ago, we can't state these new games to be retro.
Maybe if Xbox had new controller designs like Nintendo we would have a different story.
Or another example. I wouldn't call Fallout 3 retro, except there has been a shift in PC gaming to be more controller friendly, so there is a style to controls and gameplay which you don't find today.

with regards to ASUS, i feel you are wrong about the whole intentional moustache twirling thing, they arent incompetent, they are indeed the moustache twirling bad guys, gamers nexus only covered that whole rma process in such detail because of numerous complaints from users about a wide range of asus products, not just the ally and in all those cases asus was trying quite intentionally to try and bully people into giving them money, this is why gamers nexus mentioned numerous times they see that as blatant ASUS Policy, and not some poorly trained asus employees doing their own thing. From the tech people examining the equipment, to the people writing up those obviously threatening letters, thats a whole chain of bad, not 1 poorly trained individual spoiling it for the rest.

yeah, I also thought they were to generous to them. As this is an ongoing thing for more than a year now and this is still happening on an appaertenly broader scale, at the very least ASUS doesn't seem to be eager to change things, instead they tried to bury it under marketing speech. Is that an evil thing to do in the sense of a villain? No. Is it disingenious and untrustworthy? Yes.

No you guys are definitely missing the point. The fact is there's a soft recall going on right now with Asus if you look at the end of The Gamers Nexus video it ended up where they got an entirely new ally with only their shell left over. Because Jesus has to replace the faulty SD card reader on most of these units when they get it for RMA so in order to save money they try to find something wrong with the shell that way they can charge $200 if not they're basically just out for the entire price of an Rog Ally every time somebody submits an RMA for a free issue.

Valve is not a monopoly on the traditional sense. Do more people use it then other pc game platforms? Yes. But that is not because there are no other options, it is because Valve as a privately owned, player centric service serve the pc gaming community in a way that a greedy shareholder driven companies never could. These companies don't know what gamers want because they don't listen. And why don't they listen? Because it is not their job, or part of the plan to listen. Like the movie industry and tv, they will continue to take as little risk as possible and make 1000 more spiderman, call of duty and pay to win games. Indie may not be able to take them down with one game. Instead it's like death from 1000 cuts. We are seeing indy studios dominate the top charts with games like palworld because a need is not being met. Valve meets gamers needs, therefore people use them.

The lack of a moderation policy seems like a good thing, kinda like Valve is giving its customers free speech, but sure: frame it as a bad thing 'cause free speech can be used abusively.
Just because people have gotten use to the totalitarian control that corporations like to exercise over their platforms doesn't mean it's something that should be encouraged.
The more power people have, the more "damage" they can do with it, just be glad that TH-cam is as lax with their moderation policies as they are.
I'm more concerned about the concentration of power that Microsoft, Apple, Facebook, Amazon, and Google have over the power that Valve has.
As a Linux gamer, Valve has made it so I can play more games with Proton while Microsoft has been buying game development studios up meaning that if I want to play those games, I have to support Microsoft --something I don't want to do but at least it's not the entire stack that they own with me.
If you think Valve has more power than Microsoft when it comes to PC gaming, I question you: what is PC gaming synonymous with? Windows or Linux?
Follow up question: How many people that use Steam are even willing to use the Steam Deck when they have other handheld options which run Windows and "will allow them to play all the games vs just most of the games"?
Sure, Valve is the storefront but Microsoft owns the products that the store is selling, they own the lions share of the OSes people use to play games on, the only thing they don't own is people's willingness to use their storefront which goes to Valve for the feature completeness that they created with Steam.
If Epic ever pulls their head out of the sand and fixes their platforms lack of features, they wouldn't have to be relying on buying exclusives as people would just stop complaining about their biggest issue.
The only thing Valve has a monopoly over is the attention of their customers and that's not a hard asset.

I take back my original statement and believe Nintendo 64 should be the line where "Retro" begins. LoZ: OoT is widely labelled a retro game already. Goldeneye was severely limited in gameplay based on the N64s controller, which explains why gamers place a demarcation between Goldeneye and Halo for the first console FPS. Regarding, SMB 64, you can make a solid argument that 3D platformers are a retro genre in and of themselves.
