1:18:13 I'm kinda late to the party.. but it sounds like you could use a Rii i4 mini. Wireless or Bluetooth, back-lit keys, trackpad, all the media controls for windows, type c rechargeable, and replaceable l-ion battery. I love this thing. And they're like $35 on amazon.
Thankfully Sony has stated they're not going through with the mandatory account update.
I saw that too. This is good news 😂
Yeah we recorded this yesterday
@@NerdNest no worries at all. They announced it suppppper late like...2-3am on Monday morning so it's not something everyone has covered yet but I'm happy they did a backpedal on this
Same
Crazy how fame can be ruined by overwhelming boycott ratings... PC users doooo not PLAY!!😂❤🎉
If Valve ships a Steam Machine, I want it to be a Full 4K VR kit, with eye tracking+foveated rendering, knuckles, base stations, Steam controllerV2, SteamLink, and Integrated Deck dock.
But if they just release SteamOS as standalone software, I'd be happy with that.
Id also really love to see them collaborate with Framework, to make a board that's interchangeable between Steam Decks and Framework machines, and FW machines shipping with SteamOS.
Also, i know I'm really getting out there, but with Valve getting so focused on mobility, what if they made a gaming phone with a mobile SteamOS. I would be all over a repair friendly, open source, Steam ecosystem. Console, handheld, phone, VR/AR, watch, etc. Gimmee all of it.
Love seeing Gardiner on the Stream, btw.
Love that steam phone idea
Sony said that they're not going to follow through with the PSN requirement. But they still havent unlocked the other countries on the steam store.
Aka making it real easy to try the same thing again later. It's a lot easier to rip that band aid off quick then to face backlash AGAIN if they go to remove the games again when they have already taken them once. It would make sense to keep those games removed in those countries if this backpedal wasn't intended to last...
This is why Valve is not a monopoly. They can frustrate and annoy publishers and developers who have no choice on PC, but they can't mess with the consumer.
Valve goes beyond this and puts power in the hands of the consumer. That is what the Free market is about. Valve didn't stand by, they made it possible to vote with your wallet, not with future purchases but right there with the issue at hand.
For a general use SteamOS iso to be made available valve has to not only makes sure it has reasonable hardware support (i.e. all the NVK work that's being done this year), but also feature complete. Unfortunately not everything on steam works perfectly (or at all) on linux, another thing that has had big progress is SteamVR on linux.
Basically, just like valve had to do with proton, they have to make steamos more than just a "good enough" alternative to windows, and if the features users are using on windows are unreliable or straight up non-existent on linux then it's just going to be a no-go and turn people off.
Gardiner ABSOLUTELY needs to be a part of this, on a regular basis as well as Kyle (cryobyte33)… they are OGs.
Kyle's schedule doesn't match with my schedule these days. But he has a podcast of his own! I posted about it a few days ago.
IMO Valve should add an option to rate the publisher separately instead of the game
Seriously, Valve should make a console that looks like the Steam Machine in their marketing back in 2012 with a Ryzen 9 and the top Radeon discrete gpu.
My guess is they would use Mobile Laptop parts for that to be in their next console (Like the 7900M 4070m, 4080m for the higher price end and cheaper price range would be 6600m/7600M or any cheap Nvidia Mobile GPU in the console for their to be a good 1080/1440P High settings console.
(Possibly Handheld but that'll be more hard to do)
But we'll see what happens in the coming years 🙏🏽
The Nerd Test is what the segment should be called and it should also include 1 retro and 1 modernish sound to decipher
The crazy thing is that I don't buy games that require external launchers, and I hope I'm not alone on this. I have nothing against external launchers as long as they are in fact "optional", add value or extra services to the enduser. But ultimately they should be optional by default, and should be somewhat easy to disable them as well.... I haven't bought EA or Ubisoft games in ages. I was kind of excited to play Titanfall 2 on the Steam Deck until I realized that it required the EA app. It ran great, but I ended up only playing it once since the next time EA app wasn't working and required internet... So now I am actually leaning towards piracy instead. It's just so much more convenient.
How do you feel about just having to solely create a seperate account for the publisher?
I watched a few of Brodie Robertson's videos who is a Linux TH-camr about how Nvidia is opening up a bit more with Linux and they might be helping with the Nouveau open source drivers for Nvidia cards since a former maintainer of the project is working for Nvidia now. So this is a huge step for gamescope. NVK supports Turing GPUs (GTX 16XX, RTX 20XX) and newer cards right now. Also Bill if you think having ads below the Start Menu is bad then you are in for a real surprise because the Next Windows 11 update 24H2 is going to be turning on Bit Locker Drive Encryption by default for those systems running Pro versions of Windows 11.
Just bought Dudelings. Looking forward to it.
1:03:30 NVK will work on Turing GPU Architecture, which is from GTX 1650 to newer nvidia GPUs
Finally GAR-DEEEEN-ER... been asking to have him on for a while!
Just purchased and remotely installed Dudelings. Please support Gardiner. 😊
You know what I want? A Steam Deck "Mini" or an AYN Odin 2 with SteamOS. I like the smaller form factor, but SteamOS is my preferred handheld OS.
Sony backtracked their fiasco!
I know this won't apply to most folks, but once I got my Deck and saw just what could be done with Linux, I decided not to wait and just learned how to install and use Arch Linux. And honestly, as someone who started PC gaming on DOS, I found it extremely rewarding and refreshing to learn.
Gardiner was a great guest!
The Sounds of Gaming Quizz
What about, instead of releasing a Steam Machine, Valve sells a dock with an external GPU for the Deck 2?
That way they only need to maintain software for one SKU but it allows couch gaming at higher resolutions.
Thanks for having Gardiner on!!
Yes please invite him more often!! I watch his channel regularly!!
y but then again i don't think that AH knew where was/wasn't PSN Available cause as they said when a guy asked them "what to do if PSN ain't available in my countrie" and they said "I don't know"
My dad used to make us play a similar game on long road trips. The only hard rule was that all the questions had to be answered by a yes or no. We would pick the number of guesses at the start, state generally what the thing is (movie, appliance, sport etc.) and we were off, it was soo much fun!
I would also love to see the guys bring their own games and the rest to try their best to guess it, variety is always nice.
Super fun episode, Sony still has a long way to go before they will earn back any form of real trust after this whole thing tbh.
This chapter is GOLD. Also adding Gardiner's AI to my cart, rn.
I did the same thing Russ did after my deck's RB button died and I got a legion go, I permanently docked it and it's a great console in my bedroom that I run emulation off of, from SNES to switch it's an all in one system.
What site do you use for the switch emu now
@@Cpt_Sai I'm running archived yuzu and Ryu I dual boot Batocera on deck. Keep in mind my Batocera never goes online. I will not allow any changes to accidentally be made, I have over 350 switch games that work perfectly.
Great Episode, Bill! And ofc all the others! You guys make my week!
I always love special guests, so happy to see Bryant, I watched a lot of his content on my Linux Journey!
Thanks Ora!
If Valve wants to go beyond handheld and create a traditional console I don't see how they are doing this unless they pull a rabbit out of the hat. What I'd like to see is something never done before like two chips: upcoming ryzen r6 8600x(or 9600x) with NPU plus Radeon 8700xt both welded to one board, put a massive radiator on top, make RAM and nvme modular and call it an ultimate PC-AI-pre build- console-hybrid, than sell it for $999-1399 depending on ram-nvme amount.
Unpopular opinion, but if it was a rug pull they would not have had the account linking requirement active in the first days of launch, and they would not have mentioned on the store page, in the trailer, and in-game that account linking was required. The only real issue is that they had no solution for regions where they don't have PSN, and decided to just sell it anyway.

I'm part of the niche group that has their PC hooked up to a TV. I've been working towards full omission of keyboard and mouse, while only using a Dualsense controller, but would love a Steam controller V2. I use the reWASD software to incorporate a Windows layer into all of my controller configs, so that I can use all the main functions and keys (windows keys, alt, tab, etc.). I have also built in shortcuts like the on-screen keyboard, and have bound a gyro toggle which helps a lot for precise mouse needs.
Its been a bit of an experiment but I feel like I'm pretty close to figuring out how to only use my Dualsense controller for almost everything.
There are of course times where I just need a proper keyboard and mouse though, (typing documents, video editing, etc.). I do have a workaround for those, which is to keep a rollable desk off to the side that I can wheel up to the couch.
It's been an uphill trek, but I'm looking very much forward to more innovations and tools to enhance the 'couch PC' experience! I think open SteamOS or a dedicated Steam machine would be awesome though!
30:30 I've become a fan of scanlines recently, but only just lines no extra effects and pixel perfect aspect ratio. I tweaked it to be only just noticeable and it makes a huge difference, everything looks like it has 2x the detail and dithered transparency as well as flashing/flicking sprites blend together like composite output, but much sharper. 3D games also get the same benefits, masking the imperfections and limitations.
looks fun... Just bought the game. good luck @GardinerBryant!!!
Lol. I was actually kinda disappointed that Russ and Richard did not know Metal Gear....but then again, it is just a video game.
I love u all guys.
I actually love the design of the orange pi neo. It looks great in terms of design, ergonomics and esthetic, to me. Also, i love the way it just looks.
I will buy one definitely.
Gardiner, i love your deck vids.😂
Dudelings: Arcade Sportsball
i never though i would like footbal games
im glad i was wrong i loved this one
There MUST be parity between the steam deck’s controls and the steam controller 2. They’ve set a precedent, not just with the software, but with the deck’s hardware
Oooh congrats on the Hades ending, Russ!!
The steam controller 2 could include a mini keyboard in the centre replacing where the screen is on the Deck? This could then give you that Keyboard/Mouse combo for those times you need it?
Great way to kick off the week
So it's pong mixed with foosball?
Lets GOOO!
Isn't the name Godot a reference to the Irish playwright Samuel Beckett's play 'Waiting for Godot'
So proud of you, Gardiner!!
Soon as the second part of the audio played, the radio transmission to Snake, I was instantly transported to my child self sitting in front of my wood paneled TV 😊
Ostriv is also worth checking out if you like Manor Lords. Another long run early access project along the same lines.
Please add rich for .99 cent DLC 😅
I'm ready to install Steam OS on my desktop as soon as they release it.
The next gen Steam machines should also be compatible with the future valve VR systems....
Wait he made a game 🎮 😳
I don’t think a lot of people are considering the fact that Valve may just make a Steam Deck 2 with Optilink (and a Dock that has a custom GPU)
I watch Gardiner also so this is cool but Im missing Kerry! I hope hes still a regular guest in the future.
He is, he was busy working this weekend.
@@NerdNest awesome 😎
Yeah I’ve been waiting for steam os for desktop PCs. With windows 10 EOL coming soon. And yes I hope both Nvidia GTX/RTX Gpu work on steam os. I still have GTX 1080ti. I would love to upgrade to better and newer gpu. But even 6900xt here in Canada is still going for $1200+ Canadian.
I am hoping once steam os comes out. More devs will support it instead bloated windows. Also hoping Valve also release 4k/60/VR capable steam box or steam console. Something with zen 3, or better, 8c/16t, 16 GB DDR5, with RDNA 3, with proper dedicated 16 GB GDDR6 (256 bit bus or better), with 3 HDMI out and of course 2.5 Ethernet, and USB 4.x and blue tooth.
More Gardiner please!!!
Steam Machine (with SteamOs) + Steam Controller 2 bundle would be really good (and some pepole love the SD's sound so much, that they want a Steam headphone/headset (i would only buy a wired version(and i would prefer it, with a 3.5 jack option)), so this could be in the bundle too.).
And maybe, with their upcoming VR set.
But i really want a new steamcontroller.
I just bought the rog ally z1 extreme last week cause it went on sale and ordered accessories, did I make a mistake? I thought that they were just revealing the rog ally 2 in june but releasing more towards the end of the year, should I return it?
TBH I feel like Bazzite and other Fedora based immutable systems are better for generic PCs just due to the fact you can layer packages from the fedora/RPMFusion repos with rpm-ostree that stick with every update.. tbh SteamOS 4.0 or w/e needs to move to that or someone needs to implement ostree with pacman with a extension called pacman-ostree or something
OMG I was driving, screaming Metal Gear at my freaking phone!!! 🤣😭
How did they not know this?!! 🤷♂️😂
Glad to see that Gardener Bryant made an appearance. He's one of my favorite streamers. I'd love to see him participate as a regular member of the Nerd Nest team.
The cards supported by NVK is kinda foggy thing. Technically there's patches that make it work with older cards (6 series, 9 series and 10 series), but I believe it's primarily focused on 16 and 20, as well as 30 series cards; I believe it also works with 40 series cards but I'm not certain on that. It's all very work in progress though!
a Steam controller w/a SD layout would be great. i frequently use my SD as a controller (remote play) for PC bcuz of muscle memory.
I am so curious about Russ’s black screen. Don’t give up on it. Mine was also stuck and after trying many things it was forcing recovery mode several times that fixed it and my screen was revived!!!
Oh, congrats to Russ for finally finishing Hades!
From what i tried there still some issue with alot of gpu and that alone is maybe stopping them from releasing steam os for pc devices
I feel like they already need another category of "verified". I think if they had a "Deck Verified" and a "Deck Verified (Docked)" for keybaord/mouse, then there'd be a lot more games getting green checks.
Is manor lords, can you play it on the deck
I feel like Gardiner has been missing from this from the very beginning. Very nice to see him here.
I guess I'll have to wait another week to try and ask a question
Gardiner on here was long overdue lets gooo
Make a problem, create a solution. Then look good for the public after making "compromises"
Can't wait to flash my old laptop with SteamOS
100% agree. Glad I’ve found people who have the same problem as me. I want a to build my own SteamOS home console !
Can’t wait for a stand alone steam OS all I want is steam on my mini pc for the future.
I'd also rather see Valve release a first party device. We all see the result of multi-device compatibility with Windows and Linux distros. There's always going to be issues between the software and hardware. While closed ecosystems like Apples Os in comparison, most of the time, it just works. Samme goes for consoles. Way easier optimization foor the companies. One software, 1-3 devices to make it work on.
playstation just annouced account link is not happening! well done everyone!!!
I care so much about 4 Paddles..
Sameeeee
I really want to see more devices running SteamOS now! I'd love to see a console, something the size of a Series X maybe that's running SteamOS out of the box, That would be the ultimate consumer level gaming PC. If it performs close to a PS5 or Series X why would you buy a console when instead you can enjoy Steam and other PC stores and not be locked into a console ecosystem? Mini PCs are great! But I'd like something a little more powerful.
To me the box doesn't need to come from Valve, but it does need to be properly supported. I don't want to deal with it breaking after updates, etc...
I'm tempted to say that Valve already needs to produce a Steam controller, it needs to becasically be the Steam Deck without the screen.
Whats all the hype about the manjaro gaming edition vs what currently chimeraOS, bazzite and nobara offer ?
And why so much hype about the orange device when pretty similar (without the trackpads) are already on the market with any of the OS above available and with all the issues sorted out ?
Is it just the OOB experience ?
If thats the case nothing will ever beat steam deck on linux devices imo
Personally I am getting anxious waiting for steam os, I'm currently on win 10 which has just been announced is being killed off. MS won't even allow me to use windows 11 even if I wanted it because my PC is too old (2014 for the cpu) but I don't even want win11 or win12 because they make windows worse with every new edition since win7... So please Valve let me use steam OS on my PC ASAP, I love it on my deck and that's enough for me to fully commit on my main PC as well.
Take a look into one of the Linux distributions. I am looking at going into Linux mint to start and maybe working my way to some of the others eventually. I don't want to wait on Microsoft to decide for me.
@@AgentKenshin Mint is exactly what i'll use if Steam OS isn't available, it's a very polished little OS.
@@demonhighwayman9403 if you want too, in case you are not gonna tinker a lot and have like a distro that has snapshots built in, and the option to have gamescope(steam gaming mode), unless you dont have AMD gpu that is, well mb consider giving bazzite a try😅😉😉
I am new in this geek world, but I am fascinated by your work, NerdNest. Greetings from México
Welcome aboard!
Orange pi neo needs at least 2 buttons in the back, not having them is a big bummer
it was driving me crazy. I was screaming metal Gear, the NES version. The codec noise gave it away for me
Gardiner is the man! Like that smash button
Is that young Andy Reid on the NerdNest? What a crossover!
I don't know who Andy Reid is.
Segment name: Midi-aged games
power hdmi hub brought my ps2 to the big screen, yea boi
If SteamOS finally gets ported.............I may need to upgrade my Steam Deck setup. Plenty of power on the table with SteamOS, minimal bullshit. Love me some SteamOS.
We can fight this but not micro transactions? What about taxes?
Those are equally bad for all. The helldivers fiasco was bad for some making it unfair.
End the FED 🤣 Gamers can change the world!
PC gamers might be a little above average on knowing what's up and what's good and bad for them. Most normal people can barely drive.
Great episode guys.
Sony probably just wants to add software analysis perhaps understand how they can open the PC version of the Sony Playstation store.
I think a lot of people "shit" on running a windeck vs an ally or a legion go. While I haven't used either of those I'd say if steamos is that person's barrier to playing games. I'd installed windows 10, get playnite, and download handheld companion and or rts and the windows experience on deck is good imo
I want windows support on OLED deck and or official dual boot support…
I'm basically ANGRY that I don't have Steam OS for PC already at this point. It is ridiculous how well it runs, and sure - I can run HoloISO or what have you, but there will always be those few little hiccups that you 'just can't have' because there is no official path, and I'm not advanced enough of a user to go diving in without breaking something. So boo-hoo, stamp my feet, I want my Steam OS already! lol
I think you want a Vbox (Vulkan box). Or a Obox (OpenGL box).
I tried to install steam os on my laptop last weekend , I haven't given up yet but I think my bios is set wrong.
Anyone here checked out EmuVR?
Call the segment "Retro repost"
I get that enthusiasts want a powerful console, but I don't think that is the right move for Valve. If they want to make a splash, they should release a low power system that undercuts the Series S and Switch. A $500+ box is something that will likely only bring in people who already use and trust Steam. A $199-$269 box is more likely to get people to take a chance and dip their toes into the Steam ecosystem. This means new customers. Valve is trying to sell more software on Steam, and their hardware is there to support those sales, not to profit on hardware. So selling hardware to the consumer base they already have, isn't fruitful. That is one of the major reasons the Steam Deck was somewhat successful. It could have been more powerful, but it would have cost $999 and no one would have jumped on it outside of a few hardcore Valve and Linux fans.
They could offer something like a GPU you can dock the console into for those who want a premium experience.
Give me that steam machine 2, just don’t give us multiple SKU’s. Just 1 or 2 with maybe different storage options.
I want valve to do the heavy lifting, pricing and optimization. I’ll pay a slightly steeper price. Maybe $700 max
Rather than releasing an entire new console, I'd like to see valve take the docked experience more seriously for the Steam Deck 2. Give it a thunderbolt port. The Valve offical dock should be the premium expierence. Currently, it is not really any better than 3rd party, and there are actually multiple 3rd party docks that are better. If they upgraded the dock to contain an EGPU and expandable storage along with giving us a steam controller 2, it would greatly enhance the docked expierence. Valve can form steam OS to function with their specific EGPU and allow the community to work with devloping combatibility with 3rd party EGPUs. Rather than a whole new console, this would give it a Switch like expierence, where the steam deck can act as both your mobile and home console, without Valve having to take the risk to support multiple devices.
