    My Mom called herself a stoic. She was a uniquely calm, wise, and effective individual who projected her boundless positive worldxiew through a quiet internal power. Thanks, Dude, for posting something of value I can share with my own kids.

    This is why I love this channel so much. The unfiltered, brutal honesty about who we really are & our place in the grand scheme of things is truly liberating & refreshing. I'm very happy to be a modern day stoic, it makes life so much more enjoyable & fulfilling. It's true when they say that the truth shall set you free. Thank you for sharing this incredibly deep wisdom with all of us!

      @Time to Reason Thank you. I suppose as for my family, it's just too much to ask them to think for themselves. They are classic Southern Baptists and they can keep clinging to their Gawd. I intend to enjoy a fresh and realistic outlook on life.

      Bravo, for leaving illusion. Welcome to the real world, you are on your way to your awakening, eternal peace within yourselves by understanding the true reality of nature. Live here not with mythical ghosts who never existed or never will return. All dead men are DEAD. For more than 2,000 years we waited for a promise of return which initially promised to return in one's life time, yes keep on dreaming.

    @appuntiamaca6995 5 ปีที่แล้ว +28

    “What place do we occupy in the "universe"? A point, if that! Why reproach ourselves when we are evidently so insignificant? Once we make this observation, we grow calm at once: henceforth, no more bother, no more frenzy, metaphysical or otherwise. And then that point dilates, swells, substitutes itself for space. And everything begins all over again.”
    Emil Cioran

    • @lovepeaceisneverguaranteed7385
      @lovepeaceisneverguaranteed7385 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Can u explain by what u that everything begins again?

    • @appuntiamaca6995
      @appuntiamaca6995 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think Cioran means that, despite being able to achieve a state of calm through this stoic truth (we are only one point, etc.), after all we are too attached to our ego. Therefore what begins again is the old and known suffering.

    Thanks for this excellent video. It is nice to notice how Lucian of Samosata, contemporary of Marcus Aurelius, deals with this view from above placing the legendary Menippus at the moon. Over there he looks at the Earth and endlessly laughs at the vanity of human affairs and their ridiculous theatre. In many ways this approach seems to be an welcome humorous complement to the Stoic one. Best wishes.

      We are still part of the cosmos, even if a very small part. In fact, our smallness is kind of the point. You may say we’re too small to be concerned with the cosmos, but then our problems are also small.

      Think of it this way... There’s the great big big big world and even that is just a small little blue dot way out in one galaxy, just one galaxy in many many more. And in this great and chaotic and orderly beautiful bigness with all the nebulae and solar systems and what not... you’re it too. You are the very same universe. You grew out of it like an apple does a tree. You’re not insignificant. You’re it.
      I recommend some of Alan Watts lectures. They’re phenomenal.

    Remember that this philosophy is a view of a single person, not all philosophies are to be embraced!

  • @SoulsOfWisdom
    @SoulsOfWisdom 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    The only thing I don't like about this view of ourselves is that it is dehumanizing, not that this is not a realistic stance, don't get me wrong. But, it's like, I'm a single father, I wouldn't be a good father if I just said "Well, my son's a spec in the universe, let him fend for himself", there are aspects to us, what makes us what we are, that cannot truly adapt to this grasp of mentality. Otherwise, we could just justify serial killers, they're just erasing specs in the Universe, afterall. lol
    That said, to sometimes dive into this realm of realization is humbling and healthy, just don't let it make us heartless beings.

      Yeas and no
      1st point its not to look at yourself as insignificant but to look at your problems to see how insignificant they are, this will allow you to be happier and pursue things you enjoy
      2nd point you are not insignificant to the people who love or rely on you, which always give us purpose
      3rd point I don't believe in an after life so I believe that the most important thing in this life is not to waste it and live it to the fullest, and try to live a healthy lifestyle just now so that I can reduce my chance of chronic injury and disease as I age.

    I disagree. If this little place and this little moment is all we have, it is all the more important to us. Think of the life of an ant or a tardigrade. It doesn't matter how insignificant their lives are to us. For them, their little place is all that will ever matter (if they were able to think about these things, of course). I agree with your point of using a wider perspective for things that unduly burden us, but this perspective should encompass our time in the world and what little we can affect beyond it, not more. Today's altercation can be meaningless in the big scheme of our lives. However, things like a divorce do deserve all the energy and consideration we can give them, as they will change how we live the rest of our lives. It doesn't matter if they are insignificant in the history of Earth or of the solar system.
