“Someone despises me. That’s their problem.” | How to Build Stoic Fortitude

  • What exactly does ‘fortitude’ mean? The definition of fortitude according to the online dictionary Merriam Webster is: “strength of mind that enables a person to encounter danger or bear pain or adversity with courage.”
Stoic fortitude, therefore, is the art of strengthening the mind with Stoic principles, so we become less inclined to hide away in our fortresses, and live life more fully.
According to the Stoics, we can’t change the world, but we can change our mindset and, thus, the position we take towards the world. With the right mindset, we can overcome any adversity. Of course, this isn’t easy. It takes a lot of practice.

This is great if you wish to keep the engagement short. But if you have the time and the person in question is willing, I think it's best to start a Socratic dialogue, starting with the question, "What makes you think that?" This fosters introspection, and may not only help them re-evaluate their "stupid" way of thinking, but help correct errors in your thinking as well. After all, you've already admitted that they "could be right."

My isolation comes from, yes, a desire to separate from the evil world, but also because I have never felt a part of the world anyway. At 63 I am tired of partaking in something that I see no purpose in fitting into. As far as a happy life - I honestly don't know what that means. I have had periods of excitement and anticipation, but for the most part I have endured life. I am in the middle of purchasing a remote, small house to live out the balance of my life, confronting only what I absolutely have to, which will be minimal. I will not have Internet or phone access and my vision is to fill my days with taking care of what I need to survive and filling my mind with positivity. I want watching a bee to be as interesting as watching a video. I am building a small library of the best things to fill my mind with and a music collection that I will never get tired of. Nothing to do with the topic at hand, I suppose, but I started typing and began rambling.

I simply don't believe in forcing anything. If it flows then great but if I feel myself trying to paddle upstream I stop and visualize letting go of the paddles, then the kayak naturally turns itself back into flow. Making myself actually visualize this really helps bring me back to the present moment. This also extends to people and things outside of my control in that, since I know I can't control them, then I redirect my focus back to how I can best manage myself in the situation to achieve the most peaceful outcome. This helps me ensure that those things don't push or pull me out of my calm because I remember that they aren't my source of it in the first place.

I had this the other day when some dude trashed my TH-cam channel and ripped on me hard. It felt kind of extreme as I'm a small channel with a niche following talking about issues that have strongly affected me and even killed friends and family (addiction, lack of fathers, purposeless, etc).
Anyway, I've been engaging in spiritual detachment / stoicism for a while so could see the guy clearly had anger issues so I responded with zero aggression/ego (the temptation was there tho, believe me) giving him full right to his opinion that I'm a total shit, but then explaining my backstory and passion for what I do calmly, clearly and with no judgement. The dude just deleted his comment and never wrote back.
It was a good part of growth for me as the anger was still there inside to 'defend' my own ego and fight back, yet the inner stillness I've been focusing on has taught me just enough patience to be calm/assertive/loving in response. I think I have to accept some people will just dislike you and others will warm to you, and that's more to do with them than you. I kind of think that's maybe something like what Jesus meant when he said 'turn the other cheek' - not to literally accept violence, but to see anger and aggression and let it pass, as indulging in it creates such a toxic cycle.
Anyway, great content on this channel. Einzelganger is an inspiration.

I can't even have pictures of myself displayed on facebook or mention my successes because I expect and know that people, even those closest to me, grow envious in an instant and contemptuous at the first sign of failure. Idiots and lunatics are not beyond bludgeoning you to death simply because you possess something they would want for themselves. And the more attention you draw to yourself, the more at risk you are.
Invisibility is the way. Why make great efforts to relate and associate with disgusting people who care not for your best interest and would slander you with any and all information you provide? Consider isolation and privacy just another sacrifice for the greater good.

I am a naturally defiant person so when my mom said not to do something I always asked why I could not understand why I should care about what random strangers thought about me. maybe it's more something taught generationally maybe all children were like me and I just resisted the culture.
