- MaXXXine has been my most anticipated movie of the year. As a conclusion to the X trilogy, I found it to be a stylish and blood-soaked good time that cements this trilogy as one of the best ever!

Check out my ranking of the X trilogy!: th-cam.com/video/mzcBP6-yspA/w-d-xo.html
Maybe I'm weird but to me Pearl is a masterpiece.
I agree 100%
Nothing weird. It is a masterpiece.
I agree. Pearl was transformative.
I agree! My favorite of the trilogy!
Facts Only
Finally found out Pearl and Howard’s last name is Douglas 😂
That was the only development on those characters we got lol
It started off brilliantly, loved the sleazy 80s aesthetic but the third act was a complete letdown for me. I felt there was no real tension at all. There was some great set piece kills but ultimately seemed disjointed and a bit rushed. Felt the tone went too goofy toward the end and I feel slightly unsatisfied with how it unfolded.
X, Pearl L, Maxxxine in that order, although I still think Maxxxine would probably be the most rewatch able out of the three as I liked hanging out in that time period more.
For me, the tone of the third act was there from the opening scenes.
I felt the movie needed 15 more minutes at the end there. It started very good you have a porn actress working in 1980s Hollywood and then we learn of these killings that are linked to porn stars and somehow Maxine could be tied to them. That was interesting plus when Maxine destroyed that guys testicles in the ally it made you think is she behind the killings. It was cool seeing Kevin Bacon but his character was badly written plus the two detectives had barely any screen time and we are suppose to care about them when they die really stupid deaths. The guy gets killed offscreen the chick gets stabbed by in the eye with a cross and rolls down the hill. That third act felt rushed and silly. I didn’t hate the film just thought the third act could have used some more time to be a better third act.
couldn’t agree with you more. the movie was visually stunning, with an amazing cast and stellar acting. However, this movies pacing felt extremely off, i kept waiting for something to happen and not in a good way. When it was good, it was great, but overall it felt like kind of a dud to me.
You nailed it it was rushed and goofy.. why did the 2 cops all a sudden seem so cartoonish.. and the shoot out scene felt more like a silly comedy the tone just felt off in the 3rd act..
I'm actually surprised by all the positive reviews, totally respect your opinion Cody and I'm glad you enjoyed it! I loved the first two films a lot and was really excited for this one, but honestly it fell flat for me and I think it's by far the weakest of the trilogy. The twist at the end felt so cartoonish and ridiculous and the social commentary didn't really land for me whereas the previous two films nailed what they were going for. Unfortunately this finale didn't stick the landing but I'm glad a lot of people are enjoying it, I wish I did but oh well. Film is subjective after all, great review nonetheless!
Yeah. It was easily the worst of the three and a bit of a let down. But I think a second viewing may help (like it did with X)
I agree with you. X was a decent movie and Pearl is one of my favorite movies of all time (not just horror). I felt that Maxxxine had so much more potential, it felt rushed and I knew who the killer was pretty fast.
SAME!!!!! i did not enjoy it. by far the weakest of the 3. by far. critics agree as well and it currently has a 77% rating, whereas X and Pearl are both above 90.
Happy to see more people agree with me, this comment section doesn't seem to think the film was quite poor in comparison to the other two
Bottom of the trilogy for me for sure. Still glad I went to see it, but it was disappointing. Mia Goth was great as always though
I got my grandparents into the series with X and Pearl (they’re not your typical grandparents lmao. They’re a little younger and more “with it” culturally) and they really enjoyed them both. My Nana and I prefer Pearl, while my grandad prefers X. So I’m excited to see this with them and where we all land on it. No doubt in my mind we’ll all enjoy it on some level.
I just don't understand all the hype x got. Kills didn't start till nearly the end. Just glorified softcore shots and weird dynamic scenes with Maxine and pearl. And old ass pearl killing really didn't do it for me as a killer. I preferred the movie pearl infinitely more
Best comment ive read in a while
That's pretty wild honestly but I love that. My grandparents got into comic book movies a bit with Black Panther and now they'll watch them sometimes if they have a great older actor or some grounding like that. It's really cool that they can get into movies aimed at much younger audiences.
You’ve got some awesome grandparents❤
@@NYC_GoodyX is good as a standalone horror flick. Another film where the kills happen at the end was Late Night with the Devil but that film was great. Pearl was a good character study but its just as slow from what i recall. Also you could count on one hand how many people Pearl off’d
ByWhat happens to the mugger was gnarly, but slightly hilarious. The theater reaction was priceless, a mixture of laughter & "Pearl" clutching gasp, it was worth the $16 ticket.
I was an 80s kid and it truly was an awesome era. The movies, the music (the fashion left alot to be desired, but two out of three ain't bad) I loved the 80s. So any film that can scratch that nostalgic 80s itch for me, I'm there. X and Pearl were both awesome films and I can't wait to see this one.
You should do a top 10 video on horror trilogies. No one talks about horror trilogies that are out there only the franchises
Yes please!
Could you imagine if A Nightmare on Elm Street 2 was as good as 1 and 3? There would be no competition.😂🤣
The horror aspects were so good but I didn't feel there was nearly enough of that. And that final act......a complete circus. Not a bad movie but clearly a level below X and a few levels below Pearl.
same. hated the 3rd act, big letdown
Did you notice that during the protest in the movie, there is a guy with a sign that says “Hollywood stole my daughter” and he’s wearing a shirt with the face of Jenna Ortega ? I don’t remember the name of the character that she plays in X.
Yes and unfortunately I called it was her father about 5-10 minutes into the movie and that scene sealed it
I work at AMC as a 16 year old kid and you are right, the movie was great
The 80’s sucked. 70’s and 90’s/00’s/ 2010’s were better decades.
@@Dieafreak80s to early 2010 was the decades for best movies some 70s movies were great but most 70s and earlier had crap audio. thats just my taste. most new movies r just crap remakes/reboots. and comedy is dead cause everyone for whatever reason is way too sensitive. if u get ofended by comedy u dont understand comedy... comedy is MEANT to offend.
@@MicroLed4k I like the Crap audio though lol. Especially now a days it’s artsy now .. 70’s were one of the best decades for film internationally and in the USA. Next to the 1900’s-50’s. 90’s had great films too. I’m skipping the 2000’s haha
@@DieafreakThe seventies was the last great decade for American cinema. The sixties was the best decade for art cinema in Europe.
@@Dieafreakwtf you talking about, 90s fuckin sucked 😂
Just got out of the theatre. That movie was killer. Really loved the noir feel of it and especially the subtle film filter that gives it a more vintage look.
Maxxxine was soo goood. I honestly just love Mia Goth’s acting style she is perfect for these roles
I see you love this movie more that I did, Cody. My main problem with the film is the 3rd act, which I felt was too predictable and lackluster. They could have been a better way to Ti West to included that part in the movie as to what we saw in the 3rd act.
so glad it got the cody stamp of approval I'm so stoked to see it this weekend!
I live in a small town, so this movie didn't make it here, just like x and pearl.
So I traveled 4 hours to the closest location to see it and it was so worth it.
I had to see one of these in the theatre.
The 80s vibe and Mia Goth and Kevin Bacon were just amazing.
It really reminded me of movies like "pieces" which I consider giallo horror. The camera use and chase with Kevin and Mia reminded me of that kind of crime drama scene you see in Italian horror.
I love this so much.
I got home by almost 2 in the morning and binged x and pearl.
I think this trilogy is magnificent. I can't pick a favorite. So many versatile choices of film making through 3 different films and Eras.
Ti West is my most anticipated film maker today.
So happy you enjoyed it cody.
I’m a sucker for anything set in the 80s but that third act was rough.
I love how over the last 8 years or so especially since the massive success of Stranger Things there have been so many modern tv shows and movies etc either set in the ‘80’s, pay tribute to the ‘80’s or movies that came out in the ‘80’s are getting modern day sequels or legacy sequels like the Karate Kid, the Ghostbusters, Beverly Hills Cops and Top Gun.
Im going Monday, will def be back to check this review post screening. Happy 4th
Yes! 🙌🏻 it’s funny moment I got on TH-cam to check it was 7 seconds uploaded 😂❤ love your videos Cody!
Sorry I am gonna call a bit of a reviewer Bias on this one lol. It was not good unfortunately... & I went in with high expectations based off X & Pearl, and was so let down. I'm not alone, as a lot of ppl have said the same, and also critics agree, currently sitting at 75% Rotten Tomatoes, while Pearl & X both sit above 90%. The score & 80's Hollywood backdrop were the best part of the film, but the pacing & plot was all over the place & suffered from one of the worst 3rd acts i've seen in a while.
I agree wholeheartedly. It's not the worst movie in the world, but it definitely falls short of its predecessors.
Ti West, who typically knocks it out of the park, seems to be more interested in recreating the look and vibe of the Reagan-era than actually crafting a suspenseful and disturbing horror movie.
As I've said in my own post, "MaXXXine" can't make up its mind if it wants to be "Boogie Nights" or a horror movie.
On point, I was so let down.
It is doing very well on imdb, and the user review on RT is comparable, so it does have some pockets of success.
Reviewer bias is what a review is, though. It's okay if it doesn't work for you, but it's also okay if it did work for someone else.
The plot wasn’t all over the place it’s easy to follow but the third act was rough and silly.
Not gonna watch the full video cause I don’t want the movie to be spoiled, but I’m seeing her tomorrow and I’m so excited, I’m dressing up as Maxine and my friend is going as Bobby-Lynne lol
I have mix reviews, but I did enjoy it. The climax and the ending seemed rushed though. I loved we got Easter eggs in the movie reminding us of the past movies (alligator scene & ww1 soldiers). The killing scenes were brutal. I love how it ends where she wanted to be but again from the climax to the ending was abrupt.
If it wasn't for a little bit of a disappointing ending for me this might've been my favorite, but for now my ranking goes
3. Pearl
2. Maxxxine
1. X
Pearl is the best one come on
There was meant to be post credit scene but it was decided not to use it incase they want to do another, which I've heards in the works 👍😊💜🐾
Love the little monster shirt we need some kinda of continuation of that movie
I can't wait to see your ranking! And hopefully, a review for Longlegs.
LOVE your shirt! Between the Monster Squad, Beetlejuice, and Little Monsters, these movies started my love and interest into horror
I was waiting for you to post this review! I can’t wait to see Maxxxine!
Thank you for answering those questions. I haven't gotten around to seeing the first two movies yet and was thinking of seeing this at the show. I'm glad I saw this before I did. Love your channel!
Great video Cody, can’t wait for you to rank them 👍
Happy Fourth of July everyone and Cody
The trilogy I didn't even know existed. It must be good if everyone is talking about it.
Dude what!? X and Pearl came out same year 2022 when horror started a huge resurgence and it's one of the best most original twisted movies the tension the story characters acting it has everything you could want in a horror movie also a slow burn style that's so effective. I can't wait to see Maxxxine
I too didn't know of this trilogy so this is new to me as well
The first two movies have great critical acclaim too! Definitely check them out. As mentioned in this video, these movies are all different from each other but offer depth to familiar horror tropes
I went and saw this movie and didn’t even know it was a trilogy.
This is the first straight up positive review I have seen for this movie. Really looking forward to checking it out!!!
You get it the trilogy is one big masterpiece maXXXine is perfect i LOVED it mia goth is just a force be to wrecking with yet again another perfect performance by her i cant wait to own it and watch it 37636363 times and just throw it on on a rainy day
Want to see this but I'm working all weekend 😢 gotta wait
Going tomorrow. Can't wait. I love both X and Pearl. Keep up the great work Cody.
what did you think?
@@TheNetflixNook I liked it
Excellent review. I felt exactly the same way. I kept wishing they wouldn't go in the direction they were going with the killer, but that was kind of inevitable. All in all, I was pleasantly surprised. I really want to see all 3 back to back now.
I still like X better, but definitely second for me. Had a great time with this movie, a bit predictable. But I was there for the ride. The music was fantastic....a little Frankie goes yo Hollywood is never a bad thing
This might be unpopular but I thought it was just all right. I loved all the characters, i loved how the movie looked and the 80s aesthetic, but i thought the movie was kinda boring tbh. I liked Pearl so much better.
3:02 Wow I’m the exact opposite. I think pearl is by far the better of those two films, but to each their own.
I’m so happy to hear u had a good time with it. I thought pearl was good but loved x. Mia goth is surely making her way to stardom. Can’t wait to go watch this. Thanks for your hard work Cody and all you do for us fans
Didn’t she kick an extra in the face or something?? Highly overrated in my opinion.
Going to see it Friday evening. Loved the first two movies, hope X/Pearl/Maxxxine come out in a trilogy 4k blu-ray physical disc box set. I'll snatch that up!!!
You haven’t stirred me wrong Cody and as a fellow Cody, I trust your opinion and I just want to say that your video on horror directors man when you defended TommyLee Wallace I was smiling from ear to ear, cause I completely agree with you
I have heard you gush about these movies for a while now. I wanted to check them out, but I was waiting till Maxxxine dropped before I dipped my toe into this trilogy. Now that it is, once it comes out on Blu-Ray, I will most definitely check the trilogy out when I have the opportunity to do so.
Just left the theater from seeing MaXXXine…. Had high expectations & was disappointed. Obviously the bar was set super high with Pearl & X - I think MaXXXine was the weakest of the 3 films BY FAR… the music & 80s Hollywood background did a lot to help try to make the movie good - but it just wasn’t & the 3rd act was awful.
💯 I left depressed because I thought this one was gonna be epic especially after how great the first two are but this one was pretty boring
Same for my gf and I, dude. We liked it but felt it didn't really have a direction like the other 2 did. And felt disappointed.
Comes out on the 11th in Aus, and my recent rewatch of X and Pearl were interesting. I used to really like X and ADORE Pearl but when I watched X the other day, I really didn’t like it at all. I still really liked Pearl on rewatch but not as much as I used to.
But from what I can gather, Maxxxine follows suit as in neither 3 of the films are remotely alike, so I’m not sure what to expect. Hope I like it but keeping expectations realistic for myself. Glad you loved it though!
So glad to hear you enjoyed it so much. I loved it as well. I was hearing a lot of people giving it mediocre too poor reviews and I loved it. What a solid trilogy. Great review!
I enjoyed it too and was my most highly anticipated movie of this year. ❤❤❤❤
I can not wait for Nosferatu. That's my most anticipated this year. I'm hoping it brings back scary badass vampire films again. Did you see the trailer Cody?
Yes, that’s the one I can’t wait for. With loving the director and the original 1922 film I think this could be an excellent chilling movie.
Omg where did you get that t-shirt, Cody?!?! Little Monsters is one of my favorite movies ever!!
My ranking:
1. Pearl
2. X
3. MaXXXine
The "Little Monster's" such an awesome t-shirt! My nostalgia meter on overload😉
I’m a HUGE movie lover/fanatic and aspiring actress. I’ve already watched 21 new movie releases this year including Maxxxine which was my most highly anticipated movie of 2024. I throughly enjoyed Maxxxine! It’s now in my top five favorite movies of 2024 thus far along with Dune 2, Bad Boys 4 Ride or Die, Horizon: An American Saga: Chapter 1 and A Quiet Place Day One. This was another great movie review Cody. ❤❤❤❤
so excited to check it out tomorrow, easily my most anticipated film after X and Pearl blew me away ☺️
Great review Cody!
Personally really enjoyed it, though I'd have liked a bit bigger of a body count and more on screen kills. It's much more a thriller than the slasher I thought it would be and i wish i hadn't figured out the reveal, but I still had such a great time with this one and would absolutely add it to my collection.
I’m sooo relieved to hear this from you, Cody! 🙏 I’m from Denmark and this film won’t premiere here before September 1st 🙄 If it lands on streaming before that, I won’t be able to wait for the theater-experience, sadly.
Mia Goth is so incredible, and she SHOULD have been nominated for an Oscar with Pearl! It’s the EXACT same with Toni Collette in Hereditary! Such bull__SHIT, that the academy are ignoring such insane performances, just because they tend to ignore horror 🙄
Thanks for your work, Cody! You rock 💪🫶
Love this trilogy! Saw the first two at the Music Box in Chicago and seeing Maxxxine there tomorrow!
Happy 4th of July!
Well crap. Not released until 16th of August here in Sweden.
Great review. Just caught up to your channel and instant subscriber.
I really liked X and Pearl. But this was a huge disappointment. There was no tension it was a decent crime drama with gore. This barely felt like horror.
P.S love the shirt
My thoughts too. I'm sad because I had such high expectations and the hype was strong. The previews looked great but it never got out of first gear imo. So many duds this year in horror
Nice shirt buddy!!
I liked Pearl over X. Maybe bc I watched it backwards. Looking forward to the last of the trilogy
I was so damn enamored with all the difference styles of 80’s horror Ti West had weaved into this film. It’s incredible
Happy forth of July
Happy 4th of July, Johnny!! 🎉🎉🎉
@@rajramnarine123 thanks
Happy 4th to you! Just finished I Know What You Did Last Summer.

Hearing from your review confirming Maxxine is more Giallo inspired has made me much more hyped for it, thanks Corey
Love the review, just saw it last night and I loved it. My fiancé actually came up with an interesting theory of the whole trilogy overall that you may want to hear.
Cannot wait to see this movie this weekend!! So pumped!
I actually didn’t know this whole trilogy existed! I got pearl Blu-ray for Christmas but haven’t seen it yet so I guess I have to buy X and then go see Maxine😍❤️ so happy to hear people love these movie!
I loved his use of split screen in the movie
Very De Palma
I never comment on videos, just enjoy the content…. But imma make an exception, I F’n love you’re shirt!
got a early screening of this movie and i loved it and was so excited to see if got loved it or hated it and ….cody my man we finally have the greatest horror movie of 2024 i absolutely was not let down by this film i loved every second of it this sis the greatest horror trilogy ever imo .
i tried to not spoil the movie for everyone and i knew as soon as i left the theater that me and you were gonna have the greatest time with this movie and this trilogy me and you are never at a disagreement with these films and i love that we can share something together that is meaningful to us and that we love keep up the good work cody and remember she’s a fucking star!⭐️
only thing that disappointed me was the killer thought zach villa from ahs should have been him since he looks exactly like him and played him too other than that mia goth fucking rocks and this toothy will go down in the horror hall of fame for the best trilogy ever made imo 🖤🤘 rock on cody !.🤘
Really dug the movie. It’s my current best of the year.
As to your point on Maxine’s arc. I think the arc was sort of the inverse of Pearl. (Which is why I think Pearl is more crucial to this movie than a lot have said). In Pearl when faced with hardship and problems she buckles and regresses. She doesn’t achieve her goal of being a star because of it. When Pearl tells Maxine in X “You are gonna end up just like me” that’s sort of setting the table for MaXXXine. Maxine refuses to lose her shot or regress. She is gonna stick with what brought her to the dance and because she refuses to accept a life she doesn’t deserve. Where Pearl did. I honest to God think the trilogy is brilliant.
Great review as always, Cody.
My Ranking is
1. Pearl
2. X
3. Maxxxine
I thought Child's Play had the best trilogy in horror but this trilogy is great as well

Even more excited to see this tonight! Was so worried it was going to be a let down. While I do see some saying it’s just okay at least I know I’m going to at least like it. But more than likely love it.
Especially what you described about Kevin Bacon. I think I’m more excited to see him now than Mia 😅
First! 🎉happy 4th Cody!
Perfect review, man. My exact thoughts.
Maurice!!!! Little Monsters was one of my favorite movies as a kid!! Where did you get your shirt!
I can't wait to see this. Kevin Bacon is someone who has starred in so many things, but man if he isn't GREAT in the horror genre. His horror movies are some of my favorites of his. I think I may take myself on Sunday to see it.
I didn't like X but loved Pearl, so I wonder how this movie will measure up for me.
I’m so glad I’m slow because the ending surprised me 😂
I’ve been a huge TI West fan for over a decade now and I’m super happy for him that he is getting his flowers. The House of the Devil and Innkeepers being some of my favorites
I love the how the trilogy carries the theme of the horror genre and adult film industry rising towards public accessibility. The characters "Pearl x Maxine" where embodiments of this idea.
Evil Dead always had my favorite horror trilogy but now… I can’t decide between these too. These have been my favorite thing in movies for the longest time
Ohhhh shhiiiiiii been waiting for this!
Damn I didn't know this one was coming out. Can't wait to see it!
Can't wait to see this!
I'm highly anticipating this one!
Going to see this tomorrow 🍿
I saw Maxxxine last night. Though Pearl is still my favorite of the trilogy, I liked Maxxxine. The acting, the mystery, and some of the one liners and how they were executed really stood out. I can’t stop laughing at how (spoiler) pronounced the word deviants. 😂
Can’t wait to see it tomorrow-I’m most excited to see the Giallo homage and Kevin Bacon 🙌🏽
Wow I love a lot of early Argento and Malignant’s giallo influences so I’ll probably dig this. Thanks!
Kevin Bacon is great. I like the way he dies in this movie too.
Yesss. I can't wait to get off at 1 tomorrow and head straight to the my favorite theatre. Alamo Drafthouse legit 25 mins from me and see this. I looovee Mia Goth's performance in this.
I think this movie works best when you look at it more as an80s Hollywood satire than a horror and shouldn't be taken too seriously. Plus that car scene... one of the sickest kills I've ever seen
I cannot wait to see this! The first two movies are I think two best movies in series of movies that I might ever seen! Next to watch Longlegs!
I just finished watching it, and this was a satisfying conclusion for me. I'm happy there wasn't much to complain about. I too figured out who the killer was in the first 20 min, but it didn't hurt the movie for me. If anything, it helped build up my expectation on how the climax was going to go down!! I definetly love the trilogy as a whole, and i can't wait to see what's next for Mia Goth and Ti West!
I can't wait to see what West does next. I love that this exists; it's probably the best horror trilogy since Evil Dead and that's high praise. I may have liked this the most. The cast is great, the scale and scope is impressive, and I was surprised how onboard I got for the concept and the riffing on DePalma and Hitchcock was some of the best I've seen since at least Gone Girl. I really like the other two but don't have much rewatch value to them personally but this I'd happily see again. Don't know how a 4th movie comes but I can't wait. Goes on a few too many ending too long but top notch work. 9/10
Where can I find X now?
Dig the shirt 🤞🏽
About time. I thought original Scream trilogy would've been the perfect trilogy but they screwed up Scream 3. If you loved this trilogy, you should watch Ti West's underrated gem, The House of the Devil (2009). You won't regret it.
Brilliantly reviewed Cody 👍 👍 love to see Mia Goth play Pamela Voorhees I think she'd be awesome.
