  • There have been a ton of remakes to horror classics released over the past few decades. Many of which are some of my favorites while just as many are crimes against the horror genre. Here is how I rank 50 of the most prominent remakes in horror.

It’s so sad that you have to say that in the beginning of your video. I know that it is your opinion. Just like I say is that I love Freddy’s Dead The Final nightmare. That’s my opinion.

Completely agree on Friday the 13th remake and Amityville Horror. Ryan Reynolds and Melissa George are really good as is the creepy little girl. I actually really enjoy the Friday the 13th franchise even with as stupid as it gets but the remake was actually a good horror movie and easily the best of the lot. So pissed we didn't get a sequel to it. The Jason in that one absolutely dominates and is truly terrifying in his size and relentlessness.
While i do agree that the Texas Chainsaw remake is very good and enjoyable, i do still prefer the original by a slight edge. Rewatching that remake, it did totally creep me out that he was walking around with her boyfriend's face on. Other remakes i really like are Evil Dead, It Chapter 1(though i maintain that Tim Curry is still the Pennywise that gives me nightmares), Thirteen Ghosts, The Thing, The Fly, and The Blob. Red Dragon is...ok. Manhunter is so much better, imo. I am also probably the only person on the planet to think this but i vastly prefer Ringu to The Ring. I am not necessarily against American remakes but the original there just created an unnerving mood better to me.
Best horror remake, imo, is Let Me In. Matt Reeves has done no wrong as a film director and only appears to improve as he goes. His version of the vampire tale had me interested from the out.

I think Evil Dead 2013 is a good stand alone film on its own. Having said that, I did not think it was a good remake because I couldn't care less about any of the characters and how stupid they were. Where as, I think The Hills Have Eyes 2006 remake is the best remake period, because I have never cared more about a family in a film then I did watching that film. I also felt that way in both The Night of the Living Dead 1990 and Dawn of the Dead 2004 remakes. Evil Dead had a great opening scene but it was just too much with the excessive gore and blood trying to 1up the original and its sequel. It actually made me sick to watch and I didn't care for the ending or the pointless cameo by Bruce Campbell, he deserved more than what they gave him. When I met him at an evening with Bruce in 2021 with a Q&A session with him and a 4K Theatrical restoration of The Evil dead 1981, he hinted at Evil Dead Rise 2023 and spoke vaguely about it which excited me. I asked him what he thought about the remake and his reply was, "As a producer on the film with Rob and Sam, I can say it made enough money to put my snot nosed kids through college." I take it he was not overwhelmed by the remake.

THOSE, however, are OLDER ones, having nothing to do with this $h!tty current Hollywood remake trend, which I pretty well detest.

This video gets an immediate like for putting the 2003 Texas Chainsaw Massacre at #1 GOAT. I have been saying it for 20 years since I saw it in theaters that it is one of the greatest horror movies and easily the greatest remake ever made. I think it's 10X better than the original and the film is an absolute step up in every way. The cast and acting is phenomenal, the settings are drenched in pure dread and suspense and R. Lee Ermey as the Sheriff is the cherry on the cake. He is absolutely phenomenal and truly terrifying. The gun scene with him and Morgan in the van is one of the greatest and most tense horror movie scenes ever created. This movie is a instant classic and will always be endlessly rewatchable.

The whole Freddy being a YOU KNOW...people argue with me about that as if he was YOU KNOW the whole time.
Slightly hinted at...maybe...but that was NEVER established in the original films!
I feel so validated right now. Cody my friend...THANK you.

The SA scene in Last House on the Left is hard to watch. I honestly tend to skip over it, but only because I just don't like seeing that stuff. When I was an edgy teenager it didn't bother me, but these days... not so much. But I absolutely love the rest of the movie and really liked how in this version the daughter actually survives unlike the original.

I remember when the Friday remake came out, I was going through a horror movie phase and catching up on some of the franchises I was terrified of as a kid. I finally went through the Ft13th movies and when I finally gave the remake a go I was honestly really impressed with it. Taking the first three movies and condensing them into a modern day telling of the Crystal lake killer worked really well and fleshing out Jason and giving the audience explanations on how he's able to get around the camp grounds was a clever idea gave us something new while being faithful to the original. I really liked this one!
... I also kind of blame it for setting my expectations to high for the Nightmare on elm street remake...
The nightmare series, next to Chucky, was my favorite horror franchise when I was a teen. It was a free canvas to let the creators go wild and let their twisted imaginations go wild.
... And they did NOTHING WITH IT! I loved seeing a serious Freddy again, the kills were either pale cgi imatations of the originals or just boring. On top of that, the heavy implications of Freddy... Doing things to his victims and toying with the audience if he was guilty or not was a horrible decision. Save for the micronap concept and (imo) a good redesign and casting for Freddy, this was absolutely disappointing.
Oh, and then there's Child's Play 2019.... I liked it. Chucky is my favorite horror villain and I thought this was an interesting modern day spin on the character without stepping on the toes of the original series. They don't create Charles Lee Ray, they don't recreate a 6 year old with tricked by a possessed doll, they don't recreate a mother trying to save her son from a vengeful spirit, they set out to do their own thing yet it gets piled on.
Meanwhile, M3gan comes along with the same idea minus the blood and gore and it's a run away success. That's just how it goes, I guess.

Your arguments about the nightmare remake make absolutely no sense lol.
So, they did nothing with it, but you liked the new additions of the micro naps and hated the new backstory? Y'ou're okay with Freddy being a child murderer but him doing things before he murders them is where you draw the line? Like are y'all listening to yourselves when saying that? (and i specifically mean all of you cause almost everyone has this complaint)
You wanted to root for a child killer, and the filmmaker reminded you that it's not normal or sane to do that, and instead people criticised him for it lmao and that's why y'all will never get another Nightmare movie, because people want to root for him and realistically the studios would get into too much trouble nowadays if they made the audience root for an actual child murderer lmao....

@@zaldigr863 I was just trying to be a smart ass! But if you want a more articulate retort....
The difference is that a child KILLER is a pretty typical slasher trope. Part of the reason people like 80's slashers is that it's fun to sometimes "cheer" for the villain.
Although child murder is obviously an unforgivable act, in the original franchise all of the pedophile stuff was subtext. Plus, eventually Freddy was presented in a "cool" way that made him a pop culture icon!
Most slasher villains kill teenagers, children are just one step up in depravity. No child is ever SEEN being murdered in the original franchise, so it's really just an extension on a trope that fans are used to.
It's impossible to "cheer" for Freddy when the remake puts the fact that he has sex with CHILDREN front and center!
My sincere apologies if my first reply bothered you. There's a much better one that proves that I can get a little long winded sometimes, too!

I would also add Funny Games and put it in Better than the original, i just prefer it...i think as a movie it's very effective and disturbing, it's frustrating and you just know the director is toying with us as viewers, like the original as it''s pretty much shot for shot but in English.. It just goes there and has the balls to do it.. It has my high respect.

Thank you for ripping into that Pet Sematary remake! Switching the kids had potential, because it completely changes how the third act plays out, but yes, it is weirdly rushed and they do little with it. The ending . . . UGH! It is dark and bleak, sure, but to what end? At the end of the movie, it has nothing to say. How can you make a movie about the horrors of losing your child and being unable to move on . . . and have nothing to say?
    SPOILER FOR THE ORIGINAL
In this one, dad basically succeeds in stopping this, and effectively has to kill gauge himself, which re-traumatizes him, but makes it so much worse than his first death. Unfortunately, he doesn't learn from it, repeats it with his wife, and she comes back and kills him. He could not let them go . . . he could not realize that "sometimes dead is better" . . . better than being stuck and unable to accept said death.
Unfortunately, my wife saw the remake first, and now refuses to watch the original, and I understand why. They have done legitimate harm to the original.

I remember being a 12/13 yr old girl on a family trip stopping at a random theater and my dad & stepmom were trying to take my younger brother, younger stepbrother and me to see some kids movie called good boy and I begged them to let me watch the Texas chainsaw massacre. I was in the theater alone shitting my pants but when I got out I acted like it didn't scare me half to death cause I begged to see it ha. I'm still obsessed with it to this day one of the best remakes/ horror movies in general ❤

    Great video.
I do have a theory about the Psycho remake (probably wrong, but run with it); Van Sant was conducting an experiment in film-making. In essence, he was trying to find out what makes a movie. By repeating the scenes as Hitchcock filmed them, he essentially took himself out of the director position and sought to find out whether Psycho (and by extension, movies in general) was a product of its time, whether it was the actors that made the difference or whether there was any difference at all.
Of course, we found out that there is a lot of difference despite repeating the same shots.

And as you have said so many times, it is your list and it is based on your opunion and tast etc. And people need to stop with the unnecessaryhate towards people on Youtibe making tier lists, because it will always be a matter of own personal taste and opinion.
