    Roth's movies don't always hit, but at least three of them are some of the best horror films of the last 25 years and his passion and talent for filmmaking are evident in all of his work. The style and technique in the Hostel films are undeniable.

    Hostel is his most impactful in my opinion. His movies always give me try-too-hard vibes. Like he's trying to sit at the same table as Tarantino and Rodriguez but can never quite cut it.

    • @user-dx1jb4zq9e
      @user-dx1jb4zq9e 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I used to think this but not anymore. I think Roth has a sense of irony about what he's doing because it's almost impossible for modern viewers not to have that when they watch 70s gore and exploitation, but Roth is less of a hipster about it, which is actually kind of great. In Tarantino's hands, everything is an art house movie. It's never actually a gangster movie, it's a movie about gangster movies. But Roth isn't making an exploitation film about exploitation films -- he legit wants to make an actual exploitation film. If you think about it this way, the humor actually isn't out of place because it's just him riffing on that genre of movie and leaning into what makes movies of that kind fun. Their appeal is the gross out, the awkward, the weird -- this is what makes audiences laugh when the director isn't in on the joke. Roth is in on the joke but he's willing to be laughed at because this is what makes the movie fun to watch.

    The content of this channel is the best on TH-cam! I think Eli Roth is way better than most people give him credit for and haven’t make a real stinker in my opinion. Also, I think that the movies he wrote but didn’t direct(The Man With The Iron Fists and Aftershock) are pretty great! Here is my list(I’ll have a more detailed list at the first comment):
    8. The House With A Clock On Its Walls.
    7. Death Wish.
    6. The Green Inferno.
    5. Knock Knock.
    4. Hostel Part 2.
    3. Thanksgiving.
    2. Hostel.
    1. Cabin Fever.

    • @wardenmagellan2643
      @wardenmagellan2643 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      This detailed list will have a big spoiler for Hostel part 2 and a minor more vague spoiler for Thanksgiving.
      8. The House With A Clock On Its Walls. It’s a nice movie but it’s just not my type and I found it kind of boring. I do like Jack Black and the movie has a unique look to it. 5.2/10.
      7. Death Wish. I liked it more than most. Really liked the cast here and there are some badass scenes but most of the movie is kind of generic. It’s a 6/10 for me.
      6. The Green Inferno. I liked most of it but it failed to reach its potential. Also, the characters were really flat, even by Eli Roth standards. But the gore here is awesome and as a fan of Cannibal Holocaust I really liked how Eli paid Homage here. It’s a 6.2/10 for me. From here on, I Really like all of his movies.
      5. Knock Knock. Thuis movie is so bad that it’s amazing. Keanu’s acting here is hilariously bad. Lorenza was great and I loved Ana De Armas in her American film debut role. The ending is so funny! The dialogue is so funny!! I think Eli Roth was really High when he wrote it. It’s a 8.1/10 for me.
      4. Hostel Part 2. I think it’s a good sequel but other than 2 kills that I loved the rest of the gore was less better for me. Most of the characters are decent enough. The final act is truly great but the first two are less interesting, other than the Blood Bath kill. But this movie kills off Paxton from the last movie which I really hate! 8.3/10 for me.
      3. Thanksgiving. I really liked this movie and I know it will have a high rewatch value for me. The kills are great and I liked most of the gore. The grownups were good but some of the teenagers were really flat. However, I didn’t liked the killer reveal, his or her motives, and most of all the high amount of named characters that have survived!!! I counted like 10 of them. It could be fixed if it gets a sequel but for now it’s a 8.4/10 for me.
      2. Hostel. This movie is really special to me. I saw it on the theatre and really enjoyed this “EuroTrip” meets “Saw” version of the movie. I liked the characters and really fell in love with the Eastern European vibe of the movie. The torture scenes are great and Paxton did rise up to be a great character. It’s a 9.1/10 for me and in my top 40 favourite horror movies.
      1. Cabin Fever. I really love this movie. The characters are good versions of their stereotypes and I really liked the balance between humour and horror. I loves how balls to the wall this movie can get, specially at the ending. But the best two things about the movie are the atmosphere and gore! It’s in my top 30 favourite horror movies and a 9.6/10 for me.

      It’s a movie that could’ve been sooo good. Unfortunately, things happen for no reason, there’s no flow in the narrative and the movie strains wayyyy too much credibility and Keanu Reeves is really dumb in this movie. The ways he gets captured again after breaking free is the most hilarious stuff I’ve ever seen. I thought he was bad in Bram Stroker’s Dracula. He was Oscar worthy in that movie compared to Knock Knock.

    You should try watching another film of his that completely went under the radar. It’s called Clown. It has the vibe of David Cronenburgs The Fly. Unfortunately it has weak writing character development like all his movies. But for the most part, it is entertaining and watchable at least for me.

    I remember seeing Cabin Fever in the theater when it came out and by the end of it, half the audience were yelling funning shit at the screen. Midway through the movie, everybody just gave up and it basically turned into Rocky Horror. I was totally confused by the humor in it and the whiplash tonal shift it created, as was everybody else. I revisited it recently and I actually kind of appreciate it more now. Some of it is legitimately funny because it's so weird and so out of place. I'm sorry, but the "party man" cop is legitimately funny for reasons that are almost impossible to explain -- it's totally stoner comedy that makes a lot more sense after doing bong rips. I also think there's something clever about it because it really does stick with you after you watch the movie and lends itself to inside jokes among your friends. I originally thought this was a failure on the part of the director, but watching it now, I realize it's intentional. I'm kind of impressed by it now that I get it. Looking back on it, yelling stuff at the screen made it one of the more memorable moviegoing experiences.
    I think Roth's whole thing is just tapping into the fun factor of 70s exploitation and grindhouse. Above everything else, those movies are *fun* because of the weird, the gross out, the perverted, the over the top and so on. It's so gross or so out there in WTF land that you laugh -- that's the whole idea. That's actually what he was going for in Green Inferno. If you think about it, the humor has a kind of a meta quality or ironic distance, but he doesn't go so far with it the way other directors do where they turn the exploitation or gore film into an arthouse film because Roth isn't a hipster about it. It seems like an over the top gore film -- and it is that -- but the guy making it knows that the extremity and gross out is also funny and that this is its appeal, so he leans into it. That's why the tone is so weird. It's actually kind of a smart. It's much more interesting than the standard farcical horror comedy that at no point takes itself seriously.
    It makes sense when you realize it's really just about the fun factor of that kind of movie. Roth is in on the joke, but he's also a legitimate fan of those films, so he actually wants to make a legit exploitation film, even if he has a modern viewer's unavoidable sense of irony about it. In the end, it's like you and friends screaming "nooo!" during the build up to the wood splinter-in-the-eye scene in Fulci's Zombi, for instance. That's kind of the essence of it. I'd even go so far as to say that Roth may have pointed the way towards a kind of neo-exploitation film.

    So my favorite movie that Eli Roth has been involved in, while not a director or writer on it, he was a producer is The Sacrament. It is sort of a found footage horror film. It is based on the whole Jim Jones cult/mass suicide/murders in South America. The reason I like it is because it is realistic horror.
