Norman Jewison, the director, has talked about how when they were in the casting phase and were looking for the person to place Judas, they had auditioned 4 or 5 other men before Carl Anderson came along. He loved Carl's audition. He was worried though that if he cast Carl as Judas, it would be depicting white people as the Savior, and black people as the betrayers, since Ted Neely, who plays Jesus, is white. And Carl Anderson, who plays Judas, is black. So he was reluctant to cast Carl. But he ultimately came to the conclusion that he would not be able to live with himself if he did not cast Carl Anderson to play Judas because Carl gave the best audition out of everyone and was the best person to play Judas. So that it was he did. I am so glad he did, because Carl Anderson gave the best version of Judas in JCS history.
I can see that concern. The answer, truly, is just listen to the man sing. The role of Judas clearly had the best songs and the power and emotion in Carl's voice made him the right choice.

growing up, Jesus Christ Superstar was pretty heavily joked about. until recently, I wasn't really into musicals either, so I never really looked into it. I heard Ian Gillian sing Gethsemane and decided to look a bit into it; hearing Heaven on Their Minds, Gethsemane with Ted Neeley, and this, it's all truly something really special. Carl Anderson is such an insane talent. seeing him lowered from that chain with that insane bassline and funk backdrop to deliver this performance never fails to spark something in me. the camp, the glitz, the nerve to pull this off while singing about Jesus Christ from the perspective of Judas and showing images of his crucifixtion... not enough words to describe how amazing I find this.
Yep, there is something very special about this musical AND about this movie. The musical itself has amazing music and the lyrics are absolutely incredible. It's a timeless philosophical reflection on the character of Jesus and Christianity itself, as it began and how it developed throughout ages to become what it is today. The movie really is an incredible and unique piece of art. The cinematography, costumes, actors, sets... The psychedelic influence of the hippie era suits it just perfectly 😃
The scene begins with a shot of Jesus with his scourged back to the camera, then dissolves to a shot of him in his white garb, turning to the camera, and the instrumental overture is almost triumphant. I remember the first time I watched this movie as a kid (thanks, Mom) and interpreted the scene as Heaven getting ready for Christ to fulfill his destiny and come home...there's just one question left to be asked first.
Carl Anderson was amazing. It may sound silly but JCS helped kid me understand the passion better than church and is part of the reason why I'm a Christian
I saw this movie in the theaters with my parents. I was just a kid but it left a lasting impression on me. No other actor portraying Judas can match this performance. It still gives me chills.
Oh wow! Me too! Well, I didn’t play Judas- I was Mary Magdalene in my 8th grade (at Catholic school) production of it. We had a cool old hippy teacher who let us do it as our annual Passion Play at Eastertime.
@@christophercasey6775 agreed and he continuously warned jesus and he wouldn't listen... Jesus also however knew that he was supposed to die on the cross which is probably what caused him to continue to still act irrational.
There’s a lot of ways to interpret this song. I’m fascinated by the ending in this version. The visual of Jesus, beaten and tired from carrying the cross, Mary crying at his impending death, cut with Judas jamming out asking if he really meant to do all this. Was it worth it? Is this really part of the plan? No good answers but it’s a hell of a great representation of this song
Gamer's get it. The various Deities and Pantheons of that age often tortured, murdered, and abused humans. The old testament is filled with the slaughter of those who displeased various deities... Christ put ALL his skill points in healing and resurrection. The very worst the Romans, The Sadducees, the Gods could toss at Christ was DEATH on a Cross... Yeah. Many people would manage to sing this just as well as him, but Anderson is not just a singer, but an actor also and he took over Judas' concern, pain, grief and love... transformed into Judas like nobody else.

Not a Christian but this has got to be one of my favorite musicals. At least top five. And Carl Anderson, damn. He and Neeley were absolutely perfect ♥️
2:25 is such an amazing shot in my eyes. There’s so much imagery and representation. The sun is representing God and the hill top is death. Jesus is marching with the cross to God while facing certain death and God is there watching from afar. It’s kinda like a “call of light” or “light of life” or “follow the light” moment.
This isn't my go-to JCS, but I really love how clear-cut and sharp it is that Judas singing "Superstar" is a vision inside of Jesus' mind, both infinite and viscerally tied to the present moment.
“Did you mean to die like that? Was that a mistake? Or did you know your messy death would be a record breaker?” No matter who you think Jesus was, he died for us all. Breaks my heart and fills it at once.
I always thought the whole musical kinda pointed out that Jesus was just an ordinary man. This song literally asks, why would the son of God appear in a weird village in a place where there were messiahs and prophets dropping out of every corner, but avoid appearing in front of any video recording equipment

It took a while but now so many churches involve contemporary acoustic rock and country music that attracts parishioners. I don't think A.L. Webber had any idea what he was accomplishing at the time.
Lets face it, the 1970's was when human coolness reached it's zenith. Such cool people created the best musicals ever. Jesus Christ Superstar, Hair, Tommy, Rocky Horror Picture Show, Grease, Godspell, and probably a few I'm forgetting. So glad my childhood and teen years took place in the 1970's. I loved all the great weed, the hippies, the easy sexuality, and the hopefulness of the youth who thought they could change the world into a peaceful loving place. They were wrong, but it was cool while it lasted.
Good god! You named them all when it came to "rock operas" of the time of the 60's and 70's. Over decades, I was lucky enough to see Neeley and Anderson preform together and the see Jesus Christ Superstar yeas later. One time with Ted Neeley and one time with Carl Anderson. As to everything else you mentioned, I have Hair, Tommy, Rocky Horror Picture Show, Grease, and Godspell either on musical disc or video.
I was 20 years old when this came out. The broadway cast came to my community college and did some songs from it. It was one my favorite movies at the time and I liked it better than some of the other stage productions I saw.
Love his expression at 1:52 … He really wants to know the answer, did Jesus mean to die like that? Like someone angry at an old friend, demanding answers.
35+ years since I've seen this film. Spent all of my adult years (49) as a musician in rock bands and listening to it all now OMFG the feeling in these vocals and the lyrical content is just mind blowingly deep..... It my be my drugs kicking in....... No it really is that good!
I heard it thousand times in 1980th at then soviet union, because my dad loved this , and then I went to Hollywood Pantages performance with Ted Neely. Wow..... my late dad wouldn't believed that!!!!!
Why can't we see and hear the piece til the end? The end is AMAZING! If you want people to buy let them hear it! I own the movie several times over! I have seen the production on Broadway, and Ted Neeley's touring company twice! I have seen Carl Anderson on stage and he got better as he aged. I can't play the disc on my computer. It won't work BUT I OWN IT! I have paid more times than you can count for this production. Why are you cutting the end off? Those who have not see this production have NO IDEA how great Carl Anderson, and the original cast really are - THANKS TO YOU - AND YOUR NEED FOR PROFIT! THEY NEVER WILL! God help you and Jesus Christ too! AND I have been to Ted Neeley's screening of the movie. Neeley is a Gift from God! I paid for that too!
Even if Jesus wasn’t the son to god, this act of love and compassion, this sacrifice has touched people for generations, for two- *thousand* years. Regardless of the truth, his impact is undeniable

I like that Judas was apparently in his heaven with a harem of beautiful angels. He was part of God's plan after all and served well. I saw the play as a middle-schooler when it first came out and still have some of the songs playing in my head from time to time. It's a masterpiece and I love it.
Fitsnwellnwith thr Gosple of Judas where Jesus told Judas he isntivign him thr most important chores, to release his if "his clothing" to the plan could be completed. Obviously this was not written by Judas, and thr Gospel of Juadas was not found until long after this move was finished yet it fits. Judas was not the evil betrayer. He was given three chore to betray Jesus so he could be crucified. What woukd have happened if Jeus had escaped and lived a nice long life and married Mary Magdalene, had kids, and died line a regular person? Thr Last Temptation of Christ delved into that scenario.
Judas in this song isn't Judas but a Representation of the modern Agnostic and even those who is struggling with Faith with reference to mass Communations and Mohammed who was born centuries after Jesus died.
This entire piece moves me so much: the dancing, Anderson's singing, the awesome bass playing by Alan Spenner, and wonderful Baayork Lee (angel in front at 0:55, 1:20, and 1:28). Like many of you, I love the panning camera at 1:52, but my favorite shot is the righthand white-afroed dancer stopping and smiling into Judas's eyes at 0:37. I once found her name, but have since lost it.
This scene is so hard. I love the first part with the questions, Why did you let things get so out of hand? and Why did you pick such a strange time in a strange land?...Do you think you are what they say you are? but as Jesus struggles to get up the hill with the cross... hurts my heart so much. I think this entire play must have been very hard to play a character.
The staging and costumes are perfect. This film is so freaking good!
I think it's the most underrated movie musical in history. Freakin brilliant!!!!

You are right when rock was so cool and music and lyrics just flowed
Absolutely true, the 70s are the best.
Add to that list Fiddler on rhe Roof- also directed by the great Norman Jewison.
Honestly, the shot at 1:53, where it pans across his face, feels very modern, and it's such a cool shot.
Best scene in the movie. It truly makes you think how special it is for all of us to be here.
"Did you know your messy death would be a record breaker" is such a great line and Carl Anderson nails it perfectly
That man can sing. What a voice.
I was 20 years old when this came out. The broadway cast came to my community college and did some songs from it. It was one my favorite movies at the time and I liked it better than some of the other stage productions I saw.
Jesus Christ is so beautiful. The jcs is a high praise to the king of kings. Fantastic.
Love his expression at 1:52 … He really wants to know the answer, did Jesus mean to die like that? Like someone angry at an old friend, demanding answers.
Absolutely fantastic Judas!! What a voice!!! Still holds up today on its own.
this is the best of the best scene of all time. the lead and the 3 back ground singers and the dancers it was perfect and touching.
Ted Neely can still hit those high notes!
Carl Anderson is the man. Would have loved to have seen him live
The emotion in Carl's voice and facial expressions just gives me goosebumps. The best Judas ever ❤
I was 11 and our music teacher in Levittown played this album for us, thanks Mr ?
Good Lord Carl Anderson was talented. amazing!!
I’m a nun who dances this out in the privacy of my room. 💃🏽😄
HA - - - AND CROWN THY GOOD WITH SISTERHOOD, FROM SEA TO SHINING SEA
No u ain’t
@@labrea5399 Lol 😂
Dios mio. If you are a nun, and dancing this out, you are slipping into a very bad habit... 😏
Slay
Even if Jesus wasn’t the son to god, this act of love and compassion, this sacrifice has touched people for generations, for two- *thousand* years. Regardless of the truth, his impact is undeniable
Yeshua never existed - he was probably a creation of Saul of Tarsus
I agree, and I'm an atheist. I also love his message of forgiveness and mercy. "Cast the first stone.." etc.
@@philsymesEven non Christian historians such as Josephus and Tacitus have recorded that there was a dude named Yeshua, living in Israel in the 1st century.
Unfortunately some of his followers still won't listen.
He was.
Love this movie. Meeting Ted Neeley was an honor a few years ago and Pilate .
51 years after filming, no one has been able to achieve this level...
Still the Most MIND BLOWING movie interpretation of the Bible ever created.
It pertains to our time, and all the scum leaders on our planet m
I got to see the tour last night in my city, and I absolutely loved it. I was silently mouth in the words along with Judas.
Incredible performance from a great adaptation of a great musical.
R.I.P. Carl.
I Learned Every shred of these Well written and Performaces of these Songs, on a 100 Plus-year-old Piano, all the Tie together variants This Judas Wiped the Beatles and Motown for a summer or 2
I love how it’s the fashion of the 70’s instead of the fashion of the first century
The production blended the aesthetics of Jesus's actual time and more modern days.
My friends and I used to have a theory that it was actually a post apocalyptic future and that this was all being performed by people who had discovered certain lost relics from before the End; a Bible, some 70’s music collections and imagery, and a broadway performance recording of some kind.😆🤣😆🤣
@@allthingsnerd.4484 The movie opens with the actors coming off of a bus and putting on their costumes. It ends with them going back on the bus and leaving. So yeah, it's supposed to be actors acting out a Passion Play within the movie.
I can't get over the bass in the intro I love it so much
Ironically, Judas is the superstar in this performance. Carl A articulation is so amazingly good. Tough when you are singing your heart out.
Excelente película musical ,sobre los últimos años de Jesucristo..grandes actores y música original de m calidad..muchas gracias por presentar y compartir.
There were many wonderful and very special performances in this but ... precious Carl" Anderson OWNED this movie. RIP, brave brother Anderson.
I love this! The performance is amazing and the ambiance is so seventies it’s just awesome!
Simply stunning. Carl Anderson forever.
Carl Anderson sang this song in the same musical style of the black American church. He could also sing rock and rnb.
I'm new to this but dangggggggggggg this sooo hyped this is a Golden moment.
Edit music in 20th century is at it finest it better than our 21 century oness
There will never be agian another rock opera like this and others that were written back then
This was always my favorite song in the movie, followed closely by Could We Start Again Please.
1:13 That part will always be one of the dopest bits of choreography I've ever seen.
It’s still a piece of classic even if judging purely from perspective of art. Love this version the most.
Carl deserved an Oscar.😢
Except he wasn't even *nominated* for one. The only Oscar nomination this received was for the score. That didn't win either.
Had the luxury of watching Ted in person, will always treasure it
One of those musicals that just gets better with age!
Easily the best part of the movie. Carl and the ladies 🙌
After all these years, this song still blows me away!
Whatever you may think about Judas, that dude could SING!
I will never forget the day in 5th grade when my music teacher played this movie without knowing as she left the classroom.
Many feelings with this song, chief amongst them is anger that I will never be able to look good in a white jump suit with tassles!
💃🕺only jesus is superstar and has the power. Acting, dancing, singing, friends, family, backstage, love much love 😊💗💗💗
