I like the way Caiphas pushes the rhythmic envelope with some of his sung lyrics. It’s not a measured nor an even delivery-at times the accompaniment almost seems to be outrunning his words, and then he’ll accelerate just in time to catch up and hit the key metric milestones. I choose to believe this was a genius at work making playful, if unlikely, choices. One thing I’ll say for him-Caiphas is cool.
Prime example of late 60s, early 70s filmaking aesthetic. The movie was filmed on a budget by actors and singers that arrive on a bus with just a few props. Costumes and set design were not meant to be flashy or overly complicated or historically accurate - just enough to get the story across.
The music (Singing, instruments and rhythm/flow ) still makes this one of the best version. Heck the Judas in this version was just awesome. That voice man.. what a voice!
I love how when Caiaphas says "This Jesus Must Die" for the first time, the two unnamed priests look at each other as if they are saying: "He is going too far". Meanwhile, Annas is giving them the death stare, like a teacher's pet ready to tell the teacher (Caiaphas in this case) that they didn't do their homework. Those two poor guys were 100% peer pressured into wanting Jesus to die.
Look at it from their perspective. They knew the religious leader of the province wanted to kill a very popular pillar of the community who had thousands of followers at his disposal. They were terrified of what Rome was going to do to them and the people if they let Jesus' heresy continue. Annas is the highest priest, even as Caiaphas is at the head of the Sanhedrin. At the end, he looks to Caiaphas to make sure he understands what he is asking of them, because he gave the stinkeye to those other priests to have faith and do their duty to God. Of course, in the Christian tradition, this was a patent rejection of God because they knew the truth and did not change their wicked ways.
The funny thing is that according to the Bible, Annas was Caiaphas’ father-in-law. He should be in charge and older, but they made Caiaphas more intimidating and Annas younger. Also, imagine having your inlaw as your leader. 😂
It's very effective with Annas being very high pitched, Caiaphas very low, and the various others in between them. Bingham's very deep voice really adds effect to lines like "Fool! You have no perception".
I love how all the tones of voices are different, Caiaphas has a really deep voice but Annas's voice is high pitched and yet they all blend so well together
This song always feels incomplete to me on the soundtrack without the drumming on the scaffolding - it's so good to have the movie scene here so I can listen with that any time 😄

I've always felt lowkey ashamed that my favorite song from JCS was essentially the one advocating for his death lmao. That being said, I'm a sucker for a good villain song, and Caiaphas and the priests kill it with this number.
Judas has some great songs too, though the perspective is changed from the source material and one could argue that Judas is the real protagonist of JCS.
@@Lark1610 What is awesome about Caiphas is his beautiful bass voice, something that stroke me from the first time I saw it in a cinema in Rome. I was 13 yo and the whole film was kind of scary to me, but Caipha's voice is still in my memory 50 years after.
When I first heard it as a kid I hated the song. I was stunned how deep Bob's voice was. As I grew older, I appreciate the contrast in voices. Yes the topic is upsetting. But the performance is amazing. Now I love all the songs, and the only one that's sort of dated is "What's the buzz?" that's a little too hippyish, but it suits it.
I've loved this movie ever since I saw it as a kid in the theater back in 1974. One of the things that I particularly like is the use of locations in the film. It's desolate but beautiful.
Giving the way they're hitting the scaffolding, this was intentional. When monkeys are agitated, they will rattle the bars of their cages. Caiaphas and the Sanhedrin are the same- agitated, rattling the bars of their own cages. They didn't just fear Jesus, they feared even more that Rome would come down on them, punish them for any uprisings that occurred.
@@danielstephens1185 my friend surmises that this is symbolism of them fearing Jesus tearing down all they built - I think that fits better than the monkey thing
That was my thought too…like they can’t be so broke they literally have to meet at a construction site like drug dealers. Lol.. Then I realized this was based off a play. So they needed something to give the committee height and an open view so they could look down upon Jesus entering their village. Because there’s only one stage, and two scenes happening. Either they have a glass fronted, new ages Office suit, a suspiciously and conveniently placed plateau that is easy to access, or they find a novel and more realistic solution like this one, which holds a bit of symbolism. Also it’s easy for the actors to use bars and such in their act. I think in retrospect they did pretty good.
I don’t think any other production has been able to match the organ melody in this song which really adds to the tension. It’s these small details which sets this film apart from the rest.

This movie is and will always remain a classic, no matter what comes next. Caiaphas singing, like see it this way!!!! It only takes one person to support or maybe change a view sometimes to make a difference.
Credit to the costume designers, they recreated Aaron's breastplate, as described in the Bible, though there is some disagreement about what order the stones are in. But I appreciate the historical accuracy.
I love this because it gives the antagonists an actual motive. In the bible they are pretty much just the baddies, but in this they are trying to save Israel.
In the Bible they say "It is good that one man should die for the good of the nation" (paraphrase since I don't have the exact quote on hand). This scene just expands that one line into a full song.
Or maybe that is just fear mongering and their motifs are darker and that is just the facade, calling him a danger to the nation, I see more like jealousy and Jesus will not be the last man people who don't like him and are actually jealous that will get called dangerous. Robert DeNiro Cosplayed Califas days ago.
@@Martinus777 I was raised Catholic, and it was always on in my house at easter. Despite now being sceptical about Jesus being the son of God, this musical perfectly portrays the bible verses corresponding. I do believe in Jesus historically, and again this musical is very accurate.
Andrew Lloyd Weber and Tim Rice first performed this in 1970, which was two years after the US war protests in 1968 and the death/assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King. The consequences for peaceful revolutionaries is the same no matter the era.
My theory about the intention to have the Pharisees on scaffolding is to show how even though they oversee everything, their actual government body is super weak and unstable; able to be blown through in an instant. By Rome.
Or...the scaffolding was the only construction, or kind of, around and Jewison wanted them to be on some elevated place representing their grade. That is a fact, the scaffolding was there, wasn't part of the production, the Israeli were doing some restauration work on the ruins and they just used it.
Yes and no. Like every religious leaders, they were able to talk to the irrational side of the humans - if not to the most irrational people of the pack. And, whereas Rome was powerful enough to crush religious leaders, nonetheless it couldn't afford to rule over a land which people depended so much on religion and irrationality without someone they trusted keeping them calm on their behalf. On the other hand is normal dictatorial tactics to concede favours to the major religious leaders for they keep their believers quiet. Rome had nothing against Jesus but the governor in Israel didn't want the high priests to ignite troubles and riots.
