You are 100% right someone tried to tell me one of the later versions was better. Carl Had a voice that could never be touched!
Murray Head in the first Broadway cast did a better job by my lights... but that's just opinion, and this is (for a singer) a really big role and *both* of them were *incredible*.

What sells the song is when Carl looks around when he sings “such a strange land”, as if he’s actually there.

I went to Cathiolic school and our nun loved this musical and forced us to watch this in the 90s. I thought it was so lame but today...i really do appreciate it. We partcularly thought this scene was hilarious
Carl was an AMAZING vocalist! My mom had the soundtrack from jcst on lp back in the 80's and I almost wore it out
Newer film adaptations of musicals really must take note of this film. The camera is so alive and intimate but then we get these grand sweeping shots of the set then cut to Jesus. It's amazing.
Only the top musical ever made.....and I'm not even religious......Vocals unsurpassed.

This musical (at the time) made the teens and twenties re-think the whole concept of the dull, repeative stories we heard Sunday in & Sunday out. It brought it into focus for us. That can't be a bad thing!!!!
After seeing this movie for the first time in its complete form, I can say without doubt that this has become one of my favorite movies!
The first time I saw it it was the very first time they had aired on television. This will forever be the image of Jesus that I know him to be.. I was eight when they made this 50 years later it's still chokes me

This was a brilliantly done masterpiece throughout. The dancers are also extraordinary in every scene. The symbology- sometimes quietly sometimes loudly- bringing emotion and insight was phenomenal.
best musical ever, im back few minutes ago from sistina theater in rome. I saw this show live almost 25 times and i know people who saw it 230 times, These year there isnt ted neeley for the first time. jesus was lorenzo licitra and I cried during Gethsemane, an amazing voice

more then anything the song is mocking Jesus with all the crock wiggling and blaspheme! Carl's singing is like no other!
With respect I think you are missing the point. Judas here is the 'modern' audience's POV saying the sort of things that must have occurred to them many times when hearing Christ's story and thinking why there, why then?
