last year, I built a Blackberry trellis with post and wires. Love your idea using the cattle panels. Simple, but ingenious. A much better way to train, support the vines weight, control width and easier picking. I haven't built my raspberry trellis yet, glad I came across your video. I'll probably rebuild my blackberry trellis later using your idea. I have two espalier fruit trees, both have branches on three horizontal wires. I bet the cattle panels would better support the fruits weight much better. Thanks for sharing your video!
Our culture is absolutely taught to believe everything must be square and level.(Thanks a lot to living in the banks house and the insurance that's required to do so ,not to mention our human nature that wants to be like others less they criticize us somehow.) The black berries would grow happily no matter how straight the row may be. I was blessed to live a number of years in another culture. At first it drove me almost mad until I let go of some preconceived ideas I had inherited about plumb, square and level being essential in any build. Anyways just some food for thought. Now I'm able to build 5 trellises in the time it use to take me to build 1. I'm kind of liking the free flowing curves in my new way of doing things. 😉 Hope someone here may give it some thought and maybe a try. Look out into nature, is anything straight or square? I believe this is incredible advice. We are taught so many things at young ages that we have to "unlearn" to truly enjoy life. I don't think people should get to caught up in making everything perfect or beautiful. All it needs to is last a long time and provide for your family. But sometimes looking good can be important especially if you live in a subdivision. Thanks for the comment!

I'm gonna adapt this to holding tomato boxes off the ground. My ranch is in a state park and the critters eat everything you put in the ground. This will be strong enough to hold raised beds without them tipping over when the winds kick in. Thank You so much.
I planted my thorn-less Blackberry and my Raspberry bushes along my (field wire) fence line. I was in a hurry to get them in the ground and wish now that I had not done this. I haven't moved them because I didn't like any of the trellis' I've seen built for them by others. I Like the way you built yours, it looks Super sturdy and so practical! Thanks for being so descriptive in your build video, it will be helpful for those of us who want to copy it.
Great idea. Only thing I would have changed, would be to leave newly installed posts full length. That way you'd give yourself places to set an owl or hawk bird scare decoy. Which would work better for keeping the birds from eating your berries once they start to ripen, and you wouldn't need to fight with the bird netting. Again, great idea to eliminate having to install wires.
I have to use closed captions to understand most of what this very fine looking gentleman is saying. Mind you, with a body like that, he could be reading the weather forecast and it wouldn't matter to me😊
I've been wanting to build my very first berru trellis and kept seeing the same wire trellis videos, but that just didn't set right with me as the canes would require fastening to the wires to keep from sliding off all the time. Then I came across this video and WOW. Just like that this set up made 100 times more sense than the rest. Thank you for thinking outsdie the box and for sharing.
Interesting idea that seems to address a problem I have with my wire sagging from the weight of the vines and fruit. I see you are using soaker hose and that has given me very uneven results. I’m interested in how that turns out for you. Perhaps you are using a better quality hose than I have. May God bless your endeavors.
I have had really good luck with soaker hoses. We had 100 foot rows of pumpkins and watermelons last year and these hoses worked great there also. I just make sure they are straight and don't have any twist in them. Thank you!
We did this about 5 years ago. It is working out great. And yes do something with the sharp edges…first year I came out looking like I did a couple rounds with a wild cat. Nice job!!!

This looks like an excellent plan. I'd love to learn how it works out and how it looks after 1,2,5 and 10 years. Draining your posts is a good idea. With the 2x4 cross beams for stability you might have tried screw piles instead, then there's no wood below grade. I'm planning a blackberry & raspberry plot this year and really don't like the idea of tying the canes (and thorns) every year. Here's to a good harvest!

Quick tip at 8:32. use your speedy square as a guide for the skill saw for making clean cuts on 4x4's. You rest the saw guide on the square for the first cut, leave the blade in the 4x4 then turn the saw and move the square and slide it up to the guide again. Makes for clean cuts. My Father (an 84 year old contractor showed me this) It gets scary to use it on ladders with beam saws:').

I made some stuff out of cattle panels. I ended up cutting with an angle grinder and cutoff disc. Takes a bit longer, but if you spend a few seconds after each cut, you can eliminate all sharp edges.

Yes water definitely still penetrates concrete. I would always recommend someone to do there own research for their area/soil. However I will always believe a post in concrete will outlast one directly in soil and yes I have had great experiences this way.
I grow boysenberries in my backyard here on the central coast of California. I just use a few 2x4 cross beams from my posts and ties the stalks and top them at different heights to insure thick production at all levels. I only have to tie a couple vines as they grow out from the stalks and then weave the rest around each other. Seems to work so far and have one section 17 feet tall. I don't have the space to grow on the scale you are growing so your methods would not be cost effective for me. Very interesting methods thanks for sharing them
Great Ideal we just started on our 1 acre a few years ago, last year we started with bantam chickens. This year started a few raised beds and a small inground veritable garden. We also added one blue berry, one thorn less black berry and a fig tree. I want to start a small grove like yours this fall, with the dry concrete you just tamp dry? No water?
We jumped in pretty big when we started. I would do it slower and pace myself if I had to start over! Yes, I use this method of pouring concrete around all of my post. I built a 36'x100' shelter a few years ago. I used the same method on those post also. It will harden by pulling moisture out of the ground.
Love that you took music out...too distracting and it was harder to hear. Your accent is kind of like a southern drawl which is way different than Wisconsin....so with the music it was a tad difficult to understand. Transcript or subtitles would help when I rewatch the video. Also love, love, love that you give tips for working alone and for not wasting materials. You are a very buff guy who probably has lots of strength....any suggestions for not so strong women working by themselves? Nobody here to help. Also my raspberry patch has been around for years...got them growing in places they should not be growing. Tried to dig a 4 in deep trench around the patch to attempt to keep the canes in the patch. Didn't work...just created a trip hazard for myself because grass grew around the mini trench and partner didn't mow directly over the grasses...so when it was picking time...trip hazard. My patch didnt have rows, though I have now attempted to put them in. But the new canes grow in the path of the rows. I had started one side of wires...didnt get far...have to keep tightening the wires every year. The herds of 8-12 deer that come to my yard, year round, but especially in winter...seem to enjoy being in the raspberry patch. Though the canes might be nibbled down to a foot height...the patch always comes back every year. The patch is located next to a wood pile so with the decomposing wood and fertilization from the deer..gets plenty of nutrients. In trying to work out the best way to to string the wires and such...I did worry that the deer would get caught in the cabling. The cattle panel would prohibit this possibility. My cats would probably enjoy walking on your fence lines, etc. So how to do get the canes to grow exactly into the panels? You mentioned guiding them into place...I understand that but do you just snip the canes that grow outside the frame? Anybody know how to keep the canes from growing in the rows? Raspberry canes are only about 4 feet...so would you just do 2ft and 4ft levels to capture the canes?
weed fabric is no good...i pulled up all that i had...will never use it again...t posts and wire for my blackberry rows works great for me and i mow on each side of the rows...for additional cleanup i use my scythe...getting ready to add another row of berries this spring...
We had an old pheasant pen that I plan a strawberries and they really took off. You need to predict him from the birds that was the worst problem we had and that's why I moved them

I believe lattice would support the weight but it could be a little difficult to maneuver the canes through the smaller lattice holes. I will definitely post a video when I get the netting up.
Is it ok to just use fencing with posts 8 ft apart?? Would it be ok to put fencing on both sides of fence poles?? How far apart would I put blackberries, raspberries, grapes??
Im in CT. Not much farming here (unfortunately). I cant get cattle or hog panels. Ive been trying to special order them from tractor supply for THREE YEARS and still cant get them because not a single store in the state carries them. No cattle panels, no hog panels. Nothing of the sort. A couple of online stores ship and it is over $200 in shipping. If you have any suggestions, I would love to hear it. I could use them for so many things including a raspberry and blackberry trellis, but no luck.
What part of CT? Simsbury and Winsted Tractor supply have them. Just saw a guy leaving with a full truckload yesterday. Also think Torrington carries them.

Put caps on top of your posts. We did and they lasted over 25 years and still were in pretty good shape.

Just remember to move the owl or hawk to different places, so the small birds don't get used to it in one location.

Good video. I’ve used this type of landscape fabric. It works well unless you have Bermuda grass. This will push right through the weave.

That's what I started doing myself. The bolt cutters are faster but the grinder is a lot smoother

I grow boysenberries in my backyard here on the central coast of California. I just use a few 2x4 cross beams from my posts and ties the stalks and top them at different heights to insure thick production at all levels. I only have to tie a couple vines as they grow out from the stalks and then weave the rest around each other. Seems to work so far and have one section 17 feet tall. I don't have the space to grow on the scale you are growing so your methods would not be cost effective for me. Very interesting methods thanks for sharing them

Great Ideal we just started on our 1 acre a few years ago, last year we started with bantam chickens. This year started a few raised beds and a small inground veritable garden. We also added one blue berry, one thorn less black berry and a fig tree.
I want to start a small grove like yours this fall, with the dry concrete you just tamp dry? No water?
We jumped in pretty big when we started. I would do it slower and pace myself if I had to start over! Yes, I use this method of pouring concrete around all of my post. I built a 36'x100' shelter a few years ago. I used the same method on those post also. It will harden by pulling moisture out of the ground.

Love that you took music out...too distracting and it was harder to hear. Your accent is kind of like a southern drawl which is way different than Wisconsin....so with the music it was a tad difficult to understand. Transcript or subtitles would help when I rewatch the video. Also love, love, love that you give tips for working alone and for not wasting materials. You are a very buff guy who probably has lots of strength....any suggestions for not so strong women working by themselves? Nobody here to help.
Also my raspberry patch has been around for years...got them growing in places they should not be growing. Tried to dig a 4 in deep trench around the patch to attempt to keep the canes in the patch. Didn't work...just created a trip hazard for myself because grass grew around the mini trench and partner didn't mow directly over the grasses...so when it was picking time...trip hazard. My patch didnt have rows, though I have now attempted to put them in. But the new canes grow in the path of the rows. I had started one side of wires...didnt get far...have to keep tightening the wires every year. The herds of 8-12 deer that come to my yard, year round, but especially in winter...seem to enjoy being in the raspberry patch. Though the canes might be nibbled down to a foot height...the patch always comes back every year. The patch is located next to a wood pile so with the decomposing wood and fertilization from the deer..gets plenty of nutrients. In trying to work out the best way to to string the wires and such...I did worry that the deer would get caught in the cabling. The cattle panel would prohibit this possibility. My cats would probably enjoy walking on your fence lines, etc. So how to do get the canes to grow exactly into the panels? You mentioned guiding them into place...I understand that but do you just snip the canes that grow outside the frame? Anybody know how to keep the canes from growing in the rows? Raspberry canes are only about 4 feet...so would you just do 2ft and 4ft levels to capture the canes?
weed fabric is no good...i pulled up all that i had...will never use it again...t posts and wire for my blackberry rows works great for me and i mow on each side of the rows...for additional cleanup i use my scythe...getting ready to add another row of berries this spring...

No. We just have our strawberries on a long row with landscape fabric on top. Basically just like "You Pick" strawberries

We had an old pheasant pen that I plan a strawberries and they really took off. You need to predict him from the birds that was the worst problem we had and that's why I moved them
Treated wood years ago had arsenic as component, now not any so biodegrades faster now.

I believe lattice would support the weight but it could be a little difficult to maneuver the canes through the smaller lattice holes. I will definitely post a video when I get the netting up.

Is it ok to just use fencing with posts 8 ft apart?? Would it be ok to put fencing on both sides of fence poles?? How far apart would I put blackberries, raspberries, grapes??
Im in CT. Not much farming here (unfortunately). I cant get cattle or hog panels.
Ive been trying to special order them from tractor supply for THREE YEARS and still cant get them because not a single store in the state carries them. No cattle panels, no hog panels. Nothing of the sort. A couple of online stores ship and it is over $200 in shipping. If you have any suggestions, I would love to hear it. I could use them for so many things including a raspberry and blackberry trellis, but no luck.
My best advice would be to try to find a few people that are wanting to buy cattle panels. Y'all could get together and split that shipping cost.
What part of CT? Simsbury and Winsted Tractor supply have them. Just saw a guy leaving with a full truckload yesterday. Also think Torrington carries them.
No music at all is best. When music fills quiet voids, its louder than voice so its up and down on the volume until i just give up and move on.
