    An old hot rod trick for infinitely adjusting the same carburetor jet is by drilling out the hole to the desired size but if you go too big you can just solder it closed and redrill it as many times as you need. 👍

    Any plans for a Tachometer? I'm really curious to know what RPM the CVT holds the engine at during hard acceleration and is that adjustable? I.e. Putting out peak HP rpm for all the acceleration, or does that only occur at the end of an acceleration run? In other words, how tunable is the CVT? Acceleration run at 3000rpm vs 3600rpm would yield some different results I suspect.

    A cheap but very effective EMI attenuator for small engines is a common stainless steel braided plumbing hose like what is used under sinks.
    Just use a size that the stock spark plug wires will fit through and cut it to length and ground the braided SS jacket to the block. It won't take all of the noise out but it will knock it down considerably.

    That ReKnow is excellent! Just a little secret that we used back in the day of racing Sears riding lawn mowers. If you weld a 1.5 to 2.0 inch adapter to the exit of a straight pipe and then a short radius 90 deg elbow aimed directly toward the ground it will sound about twenty percent quieter to passersby with almost no back pressure. Some of the sound waves reflect off the heel of the elbow and cancels the emerging sound waves and the ground absorbs and deflects some of the rest. Still loud but very cheap and less offensive to none car-person's ears.

    I've seen some stuff about mufflers and for a performance muffler you want to expand the room for the exhaust to expand. So if you have a muffler that opens up to large chamber and ideally necks down to the size you need that's perfect for performance. Back pressure is just bad Information but a little isn't gonna be end of the world so if it's just a straight pipe exiting the muffler and it's not necked or flush with the body that's okay as long as there's room for the exhaust to expand and lose some pressure before it has to exit that's okay

    To all the people who heard “I can drive a manual without a clutch” you can, he’s right. But it will absolutely wear out the synchronizer rings inside the transmission if you’re not great at timing out when the engine and trans will match speeds. Clutch changes aren’t easy, but they’re way easier than taking the trans apart to change the synchros.

    • @Markworth
      @Markworth ปีที่แล้ว +2

      On a YT short comment, I managed to find like 4 or 5 people who claim that they do this on their 5 speeds all the time, and insinuated that I'm a noob for saying it's difficult. Chances of that being 0% aside, you definitely should not do this unless you have a particularly good reason to. Not only will you obliterate your synchros, your grampa style driving of repeatedly dumping 1000rpms in the middle of the road isn't fun for people behind you.

    • @duncancremin1708
      @duncancremin1708 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The secret to changing manual gears is matching the rpms of the input shaft to the speed of the desired gear. When you have a functional clutch, this is achieved by allowing the shaft to idle and letting devices known by a variety of names, within the transmission, synchronise the speed before allowing the gears to connect.
      (Look up synchromesh, synchroniser ring, dog clutch, cone clutch for explanation of how this works). Without a working clutch, it’s pretty easy to learn the rpms for a given road speed and match them up manually, leading to smooth changes, even when pushing on. The difficulty here is, with the cvt in the picture, you can’t directly control the input shaft rpm by altering the engine rpm. The cvt keeps adjusting the gear ratio constantly, trying to maximise efficiency and, while in neutral, trying to change manual ratio, there’s no load on the cvt and it’s trying to create one. The only time the cvt expects to have no load is when idling with a stationary output. With a rev on, or with rolling output, or both, it tries to get the best efficiency by adjusting the gearing, so you end up bashing the manual gears in, hoping for the best. That’s why it’s so slow and crunchy, when he’s doing that.

    The staggered jetting maybe needed for the odd ball firing order on that V twin. The only reason they make any industrial engine a v twin is to make them more compact. The old opposed brigs was a much smoother more durable engine. But It was a flat head that ran dirty if they added overhead valves it would have become to wide to work for many industrial application's. So we have v twins. I said it on the 212 and I'll say it here too, a low restriction way to muffle sound is to simply put a turn in the pipe. A U bend will scramble up some of the sound waves and quiet it a lot more than you'd think but even a simple turn down toward the road after the muffler will effectively muffle sounds by using the ground to absorb some frequencies. I have a high revving high output 1800CC 4 cylinder car that's notorious for being very loud with essentially a straight through exhaust and it's not loud at all because the muffler I chose is a glass pack with a big U bend inside of it. All the flow, very little of the noise.
    For you, I think a 90 to the driver side, some pipe, then a 90 out the back would do nicely and give you AMPLE room to mount all the muffler you need and then some along the pipe. Sometimes simply stepping the diameter up and down can kill sounds too.

    I found on my 2000 Kawasaki ZR-7 (air/oil cooled 750), that when I fitted a 'Fuel' brand end can (had a Dynojet stage one kit in carbs), then when I had baffles removed yeah, she howled, but, when I had the baffles in, she had a deeper note, BUT, also 'Felt' smoother, more torque low down and just a generally nice ride... Underrated bikes them ZR-7s! 🤔😏

    Thanks Jimbo for another cool video. I can appreciate the amount of time you put into these videos, I'm guesing about a 50:1 ratio?
    Perceived exhaust sound is (of course) very hard to quantify on a video but, that's the best that can be accomplished with a TH-cam video. In trying to quiet down an air cooled engine over the years, it's a difficult task to be sure. Without a water jacket, the engine block rings with every detonation, not to mention the sound of all the reciprocating parts thrashing around inside the engine. One of the best ways to quiet the engine is to limit engine speed to basically a fast idle but, of course, there goes your power.
    Good idea to state which mods you will do and not do at the outset, thereby (hopefully) reducing the flood of well meaning modification suggestions.

    I know you said no aerodynamic modifications, and I agree we definitely shouldn't ruin the classic appearance of this car, but... an undertray would definitely help the aerodynamics a lot and wouldn't affect the appearance at all. So maybe that? Improving aerodynamics is more than just fuel economy, it helps top speed a lot too!

    People keep complaining about the CVT? I don't get it. My 2019 Insight has a CVT, gets better gas mileage than a car I know about that has a lawnmower engine and is about half the weight. Has twice the top speed and quieter too, but nevermind; thanks for the amusing content every Sunday morning.

    Jimbo, it would be quite interesting to see what the acceleration numbers are for 100 and 200 meters.
    I don’t think Usain needs to worry about getting beaten by your little creation at 100 meters, but it still does surprisingly well for a lawn mower !!
    This Renault is a fascinating conversion …

    Hey Jimbo, I get it, no aero mods, OK! Would dropping the car into the weeds for a really cool looking stance be a consideration? Not for the reduced frontal area to reduce aero drag though, but strictly for looks. Then you could try to avoid an an accidental fuel consumption comparison, or would you?

      if nothing else, I love to look of a lowered car. I'm concerned about damaging the 54 year old suspension components and bushings if we start fiddling around under the car. some of the parts are a bit crusty.

  • @randr10

    After your monologue at the end there about how much you like the CVT, I can't help but chime in on it lol. The car it's attached to already has an off the shelf clutch system you could use. A motorcycle chain to a countershaft with a flywheel on it that will accept an OEM clutch would get your shift speeds way down. Shifts take forever the way it is now, and as you said, the CVT robs power. I don't think it would be significantly more complex to build than what you have now, and it may even end up coming out cheaper if you can source the clutch parts. Just some thoughts, and as usual, love the videos. I'll keep enjoying either way.

    If your starter is strong enough, like on a Daihatsu Hijet weighing nothing with a 660cc motor; you can start in first gear without a clutch. I only know this because I snapped the clutch cable on a rock and drove around for a week without a clutch until the cable came in.

    Have you thought about playing with the internals of the CVT to make it deliver the power more effectively, ie let the engine rev to its peak power before it starts it's shifting process, it's pretty common in the scooter world to have to change spring and variator weights after carb/ pipe modifications because it shifts where your engine makes peak power.
    CVT tuning is relatively cheap and could make a huge improvement

    So does the CVT act like a torque converter? I wonder if you put a bigger pully if it would get more torque? Kind of like changing gears on a bike having a bigger sprocket for more power and smaller for the get up and go.

    I dont know much about cvt transmissions but when i was younger i had a scooter with the weights in the cvt. And it seems engine rpm is just dipping slightly when acceleration occurs in your video. Isnt it better to put in some other weights that will keep engine rpm at its optimal state of operation. Love your channel btw. Regards from The Netherlands.

    Carburator spacers and Carburator black magics would be dank. Thermal isolation and a longer runner seems like a good start on engine. I'm personally interested in kohler k series single cylenders and the tractor pullers that use them in cub cadets rly rly hot rod those engines. A different cam grind might help with playing when the power come in too. In the 60's king midget micro cars used 12 and 14hp k series the 350 small block of single cylenders
