In today's video we take a Harbor Freight Predator 670cc V twin and fully build it for boost. We install performance 670 custom grind cam, billet rods, billet flywheel, billet .020 pistons, port and mill the head with copper o ring, alternator kit, roller rockers, steel pushrods, HD valve springs, billet valve cover, AMR300 supercharger, and S&S super b carb. This engine should push out around 70hp and 70ft-lbs. Stay tuned for a dyno of this engine and see it in action on our full independent suspension custom buggy!!! Can I put a supercharger like that on my Harley Davidson Street Glide? I have 131 HP and 149 ft lbs of Torque right now and its definitely way faster than it was but still not fast enough.

@@adytowe7969 I remember putting my Durango back together years back when replacing the trans….I had two really long bolts left and also heard a couple bounce from under and hit the road while driving….needless to say I drove it with no issues for 7 more years before selling it to my neighbor, who still has it. 🤷🏼♂️

Right. I have 6 tool sets. I had to make a 10mm wrench out of a 3/8 . With a grinder. I had 6 of them lol
They ran away to go live with the 3/8ths to 1/4 adapters.
What he doesn't tell us is, that motor comes with a free supply of 10mm sockets.
Supercharging an engine like that to 70 hp is absolutely unnecessary.

@itp5x5 yep guys use them for kart racing and build out the 212cc usually but aftermarket serves them fairly equally I think. You can get around 30hp out of the 402cc I think k that's the displacement

You’ll lose power actually. The cover is what makes the fan on the front work, a overheated engine will lose power.
Sooo, you basically bought a complete engine, and replaced Everything, except for the Block and maybe the oil filter. Now all you need is a block, and an oil filter, and you can make a working stock engine with all the spare parts
Right? Order a long block of a pred engine and save time money and waste.

The re-do includes removal of the rev limiting device. That way it is assured the engine will grenade in the first race.
@Ron T he basically built an SV650 motor. Same power output, but the SV doesn't need a freaking supercharger.
Yeah I was watching him pull the engine apart and was wondering why he didn't just stick a wrecked bike engine or 90s honda 1.6 in there. The Honda would have been heavier, but 30 more horse, fuel injected, and a shitload more reliable.
Would have cost way less too.

Crazy how much stuff is just bolted and attached to that engine. It actually looked like an engine once a bunch of that crap came off it
Achronic Deth As long as you have the baffling around the cylinders, the front cover, and the fan on it then overheating shouldn’t be an issue. Plenty of air should be directed around the cooling fins even at idle.
@Achronic Deth actually the majority of the plastic is there to make sure it doesn't overheat.

Shoot I worked on Koehler v twins and they are the same wat with the heat shields. They look so much better without all that garbage on it.
Gotta remember that plastic was designed for stationary use...mowers, pumps..ect.

That makes for a long video but I always enjoy all the problems the mechanic runs into. I have to say, this was really well put together and I enjoyed the pacing. I love to see mechanics rebuilding these predator engines, making them better than they were. What was the total cost of the rebuild of this engine?

I'm probably the 800th person to say this, but just in case nobody else did, you forget to tell people to have the ring gaps opposed and not in line with each other. To limit unnecessary blow by and compression loss. Great video btw!!! I loved it! That thing sounds meaty

So just glancing at the parts list this engine is around 3k to 4k. If you want to go fast you have to pay. Very cool. I would still prefer this over a motorcycle engine to avoid shifting. I have a stock 650 Kawasaki atv engine that i'll use. It's only(lol) around 50hp and not nearly as cool but my frame is smaller and I didn't pay much for it. I just got done putting an old school Briggs 8hp flathead on a vintage McCulloch F1 race kart it's a real hoot.

Nice uniflow 2 stroke conversion, ports intake on bottom exh valves on top, these aluminum blocks are easy to cost into for ports, thinking of doing this with a big v-twin Harley motor, brapp

When gapping rings always err on the side of caution. You will not hurt the engine being a little loose but if it is to tight you will have catastrophic failure
When it's loose it doesn't feel as good when it's tight

Cool project, I personally would have probably used a sport bike motor instead. I imagine it would be more cost effective and more powerful. But it’s still a dope and very detailed build
I was going to comment the same thing! Before all the craziness my ENTIRE 600cc sportbike (2004 Honda CBR600 F4i) was $2300 bucks. I actually got a mint 2005 CBR600RR for $2100 too. Something like 45 ft-lbs 90hp and includes an alternator, wiring, tach, ECU, clutch, transmission, radiator, fans, and a keyed ignition. Wrecked bikes that still run can still be had for even less I'm sure. Then sell off the extra motorcycle parts and you can end up with only $1500 or less in the powertrain. And you get more power and more reliability.
M/C build has no supercharger whine, less low-end grunt, and not nearly as cool though.
Maybe he does it if he races and the rules dont allow it ?....just a thought but i really wouldn't know personally
Just imagine how much power, reliable high rpms, and speed you would have if you just started with a motorcycle engine to begin with...
That would be the lazy Boy way of doing things. Plus he might have $2.500-$3.000 grand in parts/boring/machine work. So to go out and get a used engine ($500-$800 ) good luck on Reliability/power. 0r buy a new one from Harley Davidson /Suzuki/Honda etc. That will make 70+ hp. your going to spend $9.000 grand and UP!!.
Okay horsepower masochist. Go ahead and wildly modify your Chinese lawn tractor engine into unreliability. Plenty of good high performance motorcycle engines at the motorcycle salvage - for a lot less than $9,000. I’m just saying that if speed is your goal, starting with a low performance Harbor Freight engine is a colossal waste of money and time

uestion:. Since even with properly gaped rings you get some blow by, has anyone ever experimented with putting two compression rings in each ring grove? I know the existing groves might not be wide enough to accommodate two rings each, but they could be widened. The possible advantage would have the two rings in each grove offset from each other thus minimizing blow by and increasing compression with the 4 compression rings on each piston. Just a thought.

@Stable Genius How does this compare with a rotax 850. im on xd-100 on my converted kohler, but tha oil is 33.40$ gallon for etec 2 stroke oil, i also run amsoil dominator in it to as it is cheaper and runs just as clean!

I think he realized that once it gets compressed and heated up it will expand. An over expanding gasket can cause serious leaks

Hardly a gap. Copper deforms obviously. Pedantry really, even a gap that's not visible is still a gap.
While that's pretty cool, I think at that point I'd just pull out an old Honda 1.6L single cam and slap it in. Would probably be cheaper, though you'd have less speed off the line due to weight but a good bit more torque
As I was saying to the other fellow I wouldn't have changed any internals I would have put the butler on there and run the piss out of it anything less than 10 lb of boost is fine with most stock internals in hell if it did break He spent more money in parts You could buy a whole new motor lol
This engine has no cylinder liner, seems to have valve seats machined right into the aluminum head, and probably a number of other cost-reducing design features - hardly worth upgrading this engine I think.

I gotta had it to you. This was an excellent build. You did a perfect job, I mean I thought I would catch you slipping on those starter mounting bolts, I was like the one time my dude doesn't use a torque wrench then 20 seconds later you're torquing them down. I know this is an old video, but I just came upon it. I even like how you turned down the idle for a moment to let the oil get to the dry side and then when you did start giving it throttle you gave it baby bumps until it was warmed up. Nice job beginning to end!

At first when you flashed 10mm socket on the screen I thought you were bragging you had one. Might as well wear a Rolex while building.
Never heard of “cam followers” before I always heard em called lifters
Cam followers and lifters are different. Normally lifters work with rocker arms and push rods, cam in block design. Cam followers work with hydraulic valve lash adjusters, over head cam designs.
He also referred to them as cam tappets. They do not look like any type of standard lifter.

I have an old odyssey with a circle track challenger frame. always to under powered for pismo, but now. I think its time for an upgrade. Thanks for a great video!
