Come on IGN, if you're going to review a visual beast like ARMA 3, do it justice by playing it on one of your proper rigs at max settings and native resolution. This makes it look ugly
"Stumbling into the bushes, until I 'accidentally' pulverized my self by a satchel that I didn't mean to deploy," *Opens scroll menu and clearly chose the "Put Explosive Charge(1 left) and clearly chose the "Touch off bombs(1)" button....* Bad acting...
*facepalm* This is what happens when you let a reviewer do a review who has no experience or even interest in the genre. This is not CoD, so it shouldn't be measured by the same standards. Of course it's tough to learn, it's a simulator, but most things can be learned in a day or two. This isn't a game you necessarily play to relax, this is a game you play to feel like you're in a real war, it's a game that makes you use your brain to think and learn, like chess. I'm not butthurt about the score, this guy is just ignorant.
This game isn't "Tough to learn" you just have to use tactics, and i am not talking about CSGO tactics i mean REAL LIFE tactics. Sure it may be harsh to new comers but, I've seen people go from noob to good in a couple of minutes. Other than that i think ArmA 3 is one of the best open world FPS sandbox games out on the market.
+Gordon Freeman Past the controls learning curve I actually did far better in ARMA than other shooters...because like you said, real world tactics matter, its not a run and gun DM fest. You can really plan your moves in this game, use covering fire etc like in real life...most games these ideas are not even viable.
I really feel that he is looking at the game through the eyes of someone who loves games like Battlefield and Call of Duty (nothing wrong with that), but I feel like he isn't looking at the game for what it is, a mill sim. But I guess the more opinions the better right (:
I love his argument for the sound design, "even if tanks and helicopters sound that way it detracts from the experience" THATS WHAT I WANT IN A GAME LIKE THIS REALISM!!! Why is this idiot reviewing this when he clearly doesn't understand the spirit of the game?!
I am not an Arma fanboy, but I have played Arma. It is not for everyone. He clearly isn't someone that wants to play the game for its realism, but instead, he came into the game expecting it to be an easy "call of duty" style game. They should have picked a different reviewer for this game that has a passion for Arma-like gameplay. Plus multiplayer is fun af.
add double jump omg this is the best game ever hands down, cod is the best -said no one ever pc master race scrubs(i know aw is on pc but it is mainly played on console)
I could understand the low score if games like COD didn't exist. COD never pushes the boundaries, never attempts anything that could be considered spectacular, and is pushed out every year. And Battlefield is following suit. Just because those games are polished, it shouldn't make them preferable, but I believe that's what's happening. People, including reviewers, should be encouraging others to jump into games like this, to make them better, instead of essentially making the case to buy the other uninspired competition. It could be a tough sell, but not if you consider the staleness of other games.
This game is freaking great. At least give it an 8.5 to 9.5 because most games don't really give out what Arma can. Sounds...really? The sounds in 3 are way better than 2 and still better than Cod. I do agree about the controls, but within 10 to 30 minutes with just messing around with the manual and the game you will feel at home.
tough to learn?? Arma 3 was the first Arma series game I played. I got used to the controls and learnt to play it in a day.. -.- Wait till Barbie games come out. IGN's gonna give it a rating of 9.9 Missed out by 0.1 cause of 'voice acting'
You learn how to play the game with trial by fire. It adds additional hours put in by players to the game itself. Plus it adds a more rewarding experience rather than a bunch of tutorials that tell you almost everything about what you can do (done in Arma 2). Basically it's the same as reading the "button manual" for an xbox game even though there are only 17 buttons that you can just find out while playing the game.
Best thing about Arma 3 is that the rebound the "throw frag" to G, the old "inventory" key. If i had a penny for every time my squad blew itself up during briefings, when after we went from A2--> A3! x'D
The game can be boring at times but if you find the right server then you'l have a blast. Arma 3 will give you the best online gaming experiences ever but you just got to deal with the bugs and servers that suck in performance. As long as you find the right people to play with, its amazing.
I don't understand why people get so hot n bothered when somebodys opinion differs. He explained his reasoning very well. When you rate the video, you should be rating the quality of the video, not whether or not you agree with him.
I personally think the score is for the potential the game holds, bohemia always has launch issues, ArmA fans get over that. Anyone joining the series with any dedication will look past the issues because they usually get fixed. They aren't a big company, they do struggle to make ends meet, but the game the produce gives players some of the finest gaming experiences they will ever get
agreed, but since we're already in 2013, improvements can be made in order to make the game a little bit more attractive. graphics aren't everything, sure, but they definitely add to the experience.
When I first played Arma 2, it only took my friends and I a couple weeks to learn how to play the game ourselves just like any other game. Arma 3 even comes with a field guide to help you out, but if you can't even do that then that's a shame, and demonstrates how the average gamer has plummeted badly. I always feel bad observing how games turn out today, the usual overpriced run and gun cheesy B'S.
I to have played this since its first introduction as Operation Flashpoint. For a start this is a simulation, yes a simulation, not a Battlefield, Cod or any other unrealistic fast paced FPS game, and that is what sets this apart from the rest. Arma and operation flashpoint were derived from a battle program called virtual battle space specifically made for training the military in many countries around the world. The maps, missions and mods are jaw dropping and are now available through steam or the great site Armaholic. The guy who tries to review this should actually be aware that this is NOT for consoles it is a true simulator with open maps that are literally hundreds of miles square, with towns, cities and a full time seasonal and weather system and comes complete with its own editor to which other console games do not, and are incapable of doing so. Hence there are hundreds of maps, mods and missions that do not charge money for the privilage, they are community based and free. Please dude stick to reviewing the usual doom and quake based games for consoles as you are totally inept to review such a program to quote you, you state the vehicle sounds although realistic add nothing and make the experience, "it's like piloting toys", well lmao if the sounds are taken from the actual vehicles how the hell can you say it is not realistic, maybe you should dub in your own sounds from the expendables movie, dress up as sly and install the latest COD or even Battlefield 4 as they seem to be more atune to your more childish expectation of what a military simulator is about.
the only thing i dont like about arma is how much time it takes to do everything. gearing up, waiting for a helicopter pilot, flying for 5 mins towards the objective. being 6-7 hundred meters out, moving in slowly so you dont get sniped out by really really good enemy bots. and hopfully getting into a gunfight you can maybe shootback in. i probably get into 1 gun fight an hour. but that changes based on the server.
Oh, I should emphasise that when I say can not, I do not mean cannot, I mean that it's fine for him not to like it. It just occurred to me that bit might be read in a way unintended.
Well, he is right. It is super difficult to learn the controls your first time. To learn all the controls, I had to spend 20 hours into the game. But that isn't nearly as much of a problem for me as they made it seem in this video. (The game is hard 7/10). What really made me want to give this a 7/10 and return the game in the first place was the optimization. Don't even get me started on that. I have a budget PC build and it had problems running at stable 30 FPS on normal settings.
I'd say it's a bad review, two parts of the recorded gameplay were repeated at least three times (e.g. the ATV driving around). Plus, whoever was playing it, did it in a low resolution. In some parts of the gameplay the borders were cut off the screen. And one of the cons was: "though to learn"... Most of the games are hard to play AT FIRST. You must be kidding, just because a game is hard to learn it's considered a bad aspect? The person who was playing it on the review CLEARLY didn't know how to play, easily noticed when he suicided with satchel charges because he didn't know how to use the scroll menu. IGN does some good reviews, but this is not one of them.
"Maybe that's what helicopters and tanks sounds like. But it doesn't change the end result that they still sound like toys?" That makes no fucking sense.
i play only altis live in Arma 3.. and I have no Problem comunicating... the first hour i played, 4 ppl asked me if I wanna join their ts Server, and I play with them altis life now.
Yes, the guy that reviewed this game obviously doesn't understand the full aspect of this game, we need someone with experience out of all the arma series and how Bohemia has came so far with this game and the major improvements. This game has so much potential that the reviewer is leaving out, people like Dyslexi that have so much experience with these games. Kinda disappointed IGN... the only problem i've seen so far with this game is the lack of content.
You know, combat sims dont need to have stunning graphics. VBS2(the actual Mil Sim made by bohemia interactive) is based on ARMA 1 engine, so, not much eye candy there but instead it offers a much more complex "gameplay"
maybe, but the fact that you can have so many people in one server, with a open map of over 200sq/km id say the graphics are amazing. sure its no bf3/4 but those maps are way smaller and they could spend more time on them. but once your in the game, and your looking at everything its pretty good, and once you get into a gun fight thats over 600km apart. you ignore the little things.
i dont see how you can think arma 3 is that difficult, just got Iron front liberation with dday dlc and arma 3 2 days ago, an tonight has been the first night i actually played the campaign, im around 10 hours in and i just completed the convoy ambush mission wich is the 3rd mission on Altis i believe. i found the game super fun and not easy but mild, the only issue i had was Death Valley trying to lazer target 2 artillary spotters with the Darter UAV, and this is the first time i ever played a game produced by Bohemia. controls were complex, but thats why theres a keyboard and mouse, only people who complaim about controls are ppl who try to use a controller on their PC. simply not enough buttons. Yet you guys give idk the 13th COD (same game every year) a 9/10 but you give arma a 6 or a 7, that says alot.
I have trusted IGN reviews before this... It's not supposed to be easy, it's simulator and feels really realistic! This isn't casual FPS... It doesn't have campaign, yet, but where you need it when coop scenarios and MP is sooo much fun. I have played this game ~100h and it gets better and better. PS. Other FPS games are not even close to this.
This game does deserve a seven, but for its huge performance issues, lack of content, and technical problems (which are somehow never even mentioned in this review despite being by far the most widespread criticism of this game by the community). Its really not that difficult to learn.
If you are a returning fan to the series, this game is a lot easier than he puts it. The game is not as hard as it looks, like any other Arma it is simple if you know what you are doing.
For the first minute I disagreed with the reviewer but after watching the whole review twice it's an incredibly accurate and non biased review and it got a 7 which is a great score. If you're are complaining because it didn't get a 9 or a 10 go make your own review and see how well it does.
So the controls seems very complex, but yet very helpful like the stances (Except for the action menu). Some detail might be able to be improved (more dynamic and realistic destruction and possibly physics and ballistics). The Arma editor and modding seems pretty nice, but kinda lazy too. Some say that the AI is pretty bad, but I'm not sure if it's able to be modded (Dslyecxi did it for Arma 2). Lets hope more improvements are made over time from the actual developers.
Yeah that is one point that wasn't very great about it. I understand your argument. I would give it a higher score mainly becuase I've played Arma II and I know how to work the game. Learning the mechanics was easy for me.
I'm sure that isn't even the only way to get into it. It's not the point I was trying to make though. I was just saying that you have to rate a game on it's whole. Not just on how good it is after you have gotten used to it.
Reviewing ArmA III in the mindset of Battlefield and Call of Duty is like judging a hamster on the fact it can't fly.
It's like judging a regular sedan on not being capable to stop 100 rounds of .50 cal without a problem.... If we are keeping it military XD
i thought they do fly .... bats
c109 wtf why cant my dog turn into a submarine
Hamsters can fly. Don't discriminate against them, man. They're adorable.
Come on IGN, if you're going to review a visual beast like ARMA 3, do it justice by playing it on one of your proper rigs at max settings and native resolution. This makes it look ugly

CoD is an average FPS. Arma is a military simulator. Nothing alike
True. BF is also too, and Planetside 2, a step further with classes and mechanics that makes it different.

If I want Arma 2 and dayz for Arma 2, should I buy Arma 2 standalone game, Operation Arrowhead, or combined operations?
combined operations is the original arma2 + operation arrowhead
I to have played this since its first introduction as Operation Flashpoint. While I understand many points in this video just because it takes more than 5 mind to learn does not make it a bad game.
omg what res is he playing on 800x600 ?
BOMBASTIC SET PIECES...funny just came form the gamespot review and he also used the word bombastic in his review.
I agree. Same controls as 2 and very intuitive. Just have to mess with it that's all.
TheShadowhatake18 Mhm.
I would give it a higher score mainly becuase I've played Arma II
and I know how to work the game.
Learning the mechanics was easy for me.
I'm sure that isn't even the only way to get into it. It's not the point I was trying to make though. I was just saying that you have to rate a game on it's whole. Not just on how good it is after you have gotten used to it.
Don't get a Call of Duty fan boy to review a game like ArmA 3 Please, thank you!
Especially considering Ghosts isn't even out yet
I never play FPS games, but even I was able to play this game alright...
The reviewer is just salty because he was so stupid he blew himself up.
