4:40 Piture this: Samus is strolling around Planet Zebes, goes through a door, and sees an Energy Tank at the other end of the room. She runs over to the Energy Tank, picks it up, and suddenly, it grows Rareware googly eyes, a cloud text bubble appears, and it starts talking to Samus, explaining what it does! Best idea ever. Lol. I need a Rareware Metroid now.
it's not just about that, it's full of 3D games that are nothing compared to this game, I'm praising retro studios because they were capable of making a TOTAL masterpiece, everything in the prime series was pure perfection
1. I don't mind Fusion's Linearity. It manages to tell a good, focused story, yet only give you a portion of the map, and a vague description of where to go and what to do. You had to figure out where to go, where the security door lock is, and so on. Especially at the end of the game where you go "off the grid" and figure out what to do by yourself. 2. If there was no Light/Dark Beam ammo, you'd only use those two weapons and be over powered very early on. Great video, can't wait till part 3!
this is a good retrospective, very fun and informative. BONUS FACT: Retro studios founder use to be the president of Iguana, which worked on the Turok series. If I remember correctly many team members had moved from Iguana to Retro, and used there experience on Turok, which has Metroid-like elements in it.
You do start off various Metroid games without the powers at all. I'd say it's actually better that you do have the powers at the start, but are shortly stripped. It makes the process more believable. I like how Symphony of the Night handled it. It doesn't make much sense why Samus or Batman for that matter, would begin the game with none of their abilities. I like how Soul Reaver 2 carried over all your abilities from the first, and provided additional Metroidvania abilities instead.
If I never used the Metroid Prime 1 and 2 Strategy Guides I probably would have had no complaint about the backtracking. The music found in both is so enjoyable, it sort of makes you forget that you have to still do something. I could never grow tired of the music. Truly amazing and unforgettable.
Errr... in Metroid Prime, the Chozo temple gives you hints as to where to find the chozo artifacts if you remember. They're cryptic, yeah, but the colour of the hint lets you guess what area it's at, and what's coloured is a hint to the name of the room in that specific area. Once you know the area and room, just go there and start scanning, it's not really THAT hard :P. At least I didn't get any problems finding them on my own without a guide back then :P.
I don't agree with your opinion, that you can only find the Chozo artifacts with ammount of luck. In the temple above the impact crater, there're insciptions giving useful hints for the locations. I found the all alone with these because I didn't have internet at the time. Same for the keys in Metroid Prime 2.
I totally agree, finding the artifacts was one of my favorite parts. I didn't know you could even look up walkthroughs when I was a kid, and for the back tracking? I think it was a beautiful way to make the player feel like the game really had NO LINEAR ASPECTS. which I love.
Yeah I loved the back tracking and investing in the game like I did but it still was freaking hard for many of us :P. I took day to week breaks before I would go back and have another crack at it.
aeris44 oh there is no question it was hard. SO hard. especially Prime 2. Holy cow... but hey! They're going to re release them on the Wii u this month! so now we get to do it all over again! YAY!
Time for more of my magical nitpicking... 6:35 The pirate frigate was not "attacked by the Parasite queen"; the crew of the pirate frigate was attcket by the creature after they had created it on the frigate as a mutation. 8:30 For Echoes, Retro did not "start from scratch". A lot of the basic enemy structures and animations were carried over to Prime 2.
Can't wait for part 3! I'm not a huge Metroid fan, more of a huge Zelda maniac, but I got to say Super Metroid and Metroid Prime will stay in my heart forever... haven't played Corruption... let's see what you have to say about it :-) By the way, I'd suggest you doing a retrospective on the Gradius series and its spin/offs (Salamander, Parodius...) Konami were kings back then! :-)
"Nowadays, Nintendo is known for trying new things and inspiring others" I had to lawl at that. What New Super Mario Bros are we up to now? Seven? Fifteen? Forty-two?
@Ouroboros what are you talking about. nintendo is the least repetetive company out there. even their FPS like metroid prime have way better story telling and replayability than any other developer. they have shown time and time again that they care mor about trying new things and trying to make video games fun, instead of making money like other devs. even if it has backed them in a corner. i still respect them for it.
crfstewarje Oh, you're right! They also have Mario Party 37, Mario Kart 19, Mario Tennis 6, Mario Strikers 4, Mario Baseball 5, Paper Mario 5, Legend of Zelda 26, Pikmin 3, Pokemon 18... lots of original content, there...
I love your mix of in-game videos, pics of the developers, whiteboard drawings, and shots of you as a reporter. For someone who is a visual learner, your videos are quite effective! The one thing that bugs me about the Metroid series is every game appears to have the same plot. I'm tired of having to acquire the same adaptations.
Ugh, Thankfully it was retro. :) They did the best job that could have been done on such a great title and franchise. Heres hoping for the next installment
Hey this is a great series, it is a credit to yourself for making awesome video's i look forward to catching part 3 of the History of Metroid but my favorite video as far is Conkers i love that little guy and i bet you had a blast looking into the history of it from being a cute squirrel to a drunken awesome mess that is Conkers xD Anyway i would love to see more of these videos hopefully Zelda or Pokémon keep up the awesome work (Like+Subbed) :P
Prime 1 is the perfect game to speedrun / sequence-break. The backtracking actually becomes less problematic when you get certain items earlier than the game typically would allow it. It's executing the glitches and techniques that take up more time. I nearly cried while trying to get the Plasma Beam early! xD
Metroid prime trilogy was amazing! In metroid prime, once you beat it you can unlock the fusion suit skin! I will totally play through again with that!
For the ammo system in Prime 2, think about this: Chozo armor suit, Luminoth Weaponry. It would kinda make sense that Chozo technology doesn't have the ability to self-produce the energy required to endlessly use the Luminoth weapons. And so the "ammo" can actually be portions of energy that fuels the weapon.
People keep complaining about the artifact hunting in prime. I had no problem with it at all, and I think no one would if they actually bothered to read the artifact log. It tells you in what region, and even what room you can find the artifact. It also gives you a rough explanation of what to do to get it. I found it enjoyable to traverse the planet one last time with all the upgrades before facing the boss.
You should try to get part 3 done. Also, could you do Megaman retrospective? I love the series. (There's so many Megaman games it'll probably be like 4 videos.)
I love Metroid since my early years, when I overcame my fears about the game itself to taste all of its impressive details of an exploring-puzzle-shot-adventure-horror (rsrsrs) game. (I confess that I still play it with a little fear hehehe). Fantastic videos! Congratulations and THANKS A LOT!
I actually managed to find all the Artifacts in Metroid Prime as a kid without a guide. It wasn't just dumb luck though, if you scan the various totems at the Impact Site's entrance each one gives you a hint to find its respective artifact.
I'm assuming they made ammo limitation because if they didn't the annihilator beam would be broken. If they did not not an ammo limitation then players could just hold down the fire button and it would automaticly homes to enemy's and can kill bosses with ease. Which will drop difficultly.
Woo!!! Thanks for doing there vids lol I love metroid and can't wait to get metroid trilogy!! I wish they had fusion and zero mission playable on our consoles or current handheld I can't get them anywhere. ;(
Two things: 1) At 3:19 from my understanding, Sakamoto actually snuck in the description of the Metroid's origins in the instruction booklet to establish some creative control for the franchise (since he is the co-creator), because Retro Studios had plans to give nuggets of clues to something alien and sinister for the Metroids in the Prime games (with some connection to Phazon I believe). Sakamoto wanted his Metroid games to be the staple of the series and not the American-made Prime games which he considers a "side story" to the public, or in his case, "non-canon." I think Sakamoto wanted Other M to the staple of the franchise as a reference point, not for people to look back at the Prime games for answers. Although he has done well in the past games, I have no fucking clue as to why he went apeshit in Other M, because while he was trying to appeal to the Japanese gamers, it failed in Japan and beyond failed on epic proportions in America. The use of the Metroid's origins was completely wasted. It could have been a good plot device, a twist in the story to shock the players. Imagine the spread of the X parasite with plot points revealed of the Metroids and later, nuggets of clues about the Chozo (maybe something more terrible, the X was hardly scary or threatening looking with exception to the SA-X which was scary as hell). All the games are called METROID for God's sake! That is a great opportunity for good storytelling and to become the set of defining games for the Metroid franchise! That's two trilogies right there! Instead, it is a sentence within an instruction booklet... So the game that all Metroid game revolve around would the the shittiest Metroid game Other M, with the overly used "the goverment is secretly evil" cliché, twice counting Fusion. Good going Sakamoto, you done fucked it up. 2) Halo: CE is not linear, it's a sandbox game.
xCrimsonxTidex Strange cause I do like the Prime series best for the lore.. as in answers for exactly what the Hell... is going on... I like the lore of Phazon and the connection metroids have with it.
***** I consider the Prime Trilogy to be superior in all ways, especially the lore. I use the Prime games as my source of the lore, you should as well.
mmm, I hear yah there. I think though in this video she states this is false.. as it's western views and not that of the real intention of the creator. Still I find it more accurate to what these things are, metroids and the like so i don't see why not? you know. SO I agree but still it's just to be used as data. Lol I guess what I'm saying is I like his take on her personality but that series is great for what these things are and can do and some background on how they can to be. Yes.
I actually enjoyed the ammo limitation on prime 2, it added a bit more challenge with the somewhat harder bosses since the two primes failed to give really any challenge after a while ur just kind of OP even on it's highest difficulty
10:20 lol it does kinda suck to be given that Grapple Beam in Prime 1 then lose it for the next 70% of the game x) That said it actually has a really great effect on the player. When you start with some of the games powerups you feel somewhat strong. When these are taken from you, you feel much weaker and it adds to the atmosphere of the game.
6:25, that statement is iffy. While the Pirates are known to take squatter's rights on deserted planets, it's debatable whether or not they were searching for another planet to colonize, per se. The way I came to know it was that they had ships already stationed in the FS-176 system (which is the star system that includes Zebes and Tallon IV) and red an energy source coming from the planet, so they touched down and set up shop.
Ammo count was essential for the dark and light beams. If they were unlimited, there would be no reason to use the power beam and little use for missiles. Also you can criticize Fusion for linearity and Prime 1 for its open ended-ness, you cant do both
So you like terribly written, boring, and unnecessary back-stories and being led around by the nose with almost no freedom to explore? Yeah, I can see how Fusion would appeal to someone like that. You must love FFXIII, too... All hail the hallway!
OuroborosChoked Unlike Other m, Fusion has an interesting back story and though much linear than other Metroid games, still allows for some exploration. But I can tell you are stubborn, so to every man his own.
Like Spyro Legends, I have not been able to get on board the Metroid Prime series. Its just too different. I'm so used to the side scrollers that I couldn't deal with it. Prime still sits on my shelf gathering dust.
Very good retrospective. Have to admit I'm not looking forward to Other M. I've seen some longplays and the game just dissapoints. From a gameplay perspective and graphical stand it's one of the best I will admit but the story... It just let me down a lot. I feel like Samus deserved better characterization. She was my childhood hero and seeing her in that game had the feeling of reading bad fanfiction.
I didn't have the same end after MB at the end of Zero mission... No Chozo temple, just the pirate base you had to infiltrate to find your powers and the power bomb, and then defeat metal Ridley and flee away. Alternative end or european version change ?
Love your retrospects, but when you "express" a previous feeling towards the game, it's made quite obvious that you're reading off of something behind the camera, but it adds a little humor at the same time. Granted, not everybody is an actor, but it makes me feel like you're reading off someone elses thoughts, and haven't actually played the games yourself. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt that you have. I thoroughly enjoyed your videos thus far, and look forward to more Metroid history!
This game was hard at points especially the Ridley fight posses me off but the Spider guy I loved it. Other:M was my 2nd favorite Zero Mission was way too easy but overall Prime 1,2,3 were the best and I got stuck for about a year on Metroid Prime 3: Corruption my favorite game!
Loophole in the chronological order, as metroid prime happens after Super Metroid 3, as Meta Ridley didn't come into play until after Ridley died in metroid 3
Dark samus is a phazon enhanced metriod known as metriod prime after samus defeated it the creture stole her armour and fused with it becomin a clone of her but still with the parasitic need for phazon as such this clone needed phazon and became the major antagonist in the metriod prime trilogy.
This history lesson is better than any other one I've gotten at school
Retro Studios has been the best choice ever, they turned an epic game as metroid into an epic masterpiece
Already a masterpiece before then. Super MEtroid deserves more credit.
Super Metroid is awesome still now, it was and it still is a masterpiece to me but prime....well it brought everything to a whole new level
steg140 It's because of the 3D environment, right?
it's not just about that, it's full of 3D games that are nothing compared to this game, I'm praising retro studios because they were capable of making a TOTAL masterpiece, everything in the prime series was pure perfection
+steg140
I could not agree with you more.

your videos are amazingly well researched, good to see people still care about this stuff.
I love this! This is a brilliant retrospective; Metroid is one of my favourite franchises ever. Can't wait for Part 3!

Yay! Great video, it's nice to see a retrospective done so calm and informative, keep it up! :D
Great retrospective. I love that you used Phendrana's music during that part about Metroid Prime. My favorite music of that game.
You do start off various Metroid games without the powers at all. I'd say it's actually better that you do have the powers at the start, but are shortly stripped. I had Metroid Prime. I fucking loved the game but I never finished it because at the time, I was too terrified to complete it.
FUCKING SAAAAAAAAME

I had to lawl at that. What New Super Mario Bros are we up to now? Seven? Fifteen? Forty-two?
I agree about the repetitiveness of NSMB games. But I had hardware in mind when I said that, like wiimote nunchuck and 3DS.
4, we're up to 4 NSMB games, one for each console, which means they wont show up until nintendo's next console.
Yes, because Mario is the *only* thing that Nintendo *ever* works on. Moron.

I looooove Metroid! Thank you so much for these retrospectives.
Fantastic series and great coverage of the history of Metroid =)

Frick, I love Fusion. SA-X still freaks me out.
This some really great stuff you're putting out here! :D
Zero mission man that brings back memories that one is my favorite handheld metroid out of the 2
Great video! Where did you get the photo you used for it? Really liked it xD
What do you mean you have to get lucky to find the Chozo artifacts without a guide? They give you hints that tell you exactly what room they're in.
DeathThePlague Exactly, I never understood why so many people had a hard time with this.
Oddly Other M is my favorite metroid by far, it seemed the least gimmicky, and was an absolute blast to play.
You put quite a bit of work into this,Thank You.
People keep complaining about the artifact hunting in prime. I had no problem with it at all, and I think no one would if they actually bothered to read the artifact log. Zero mission was my introduction to the franchise. Hooked ever since
I'm obsessed with these videos!
Watching these retrospectives has convinced me to subscribe. I definitely hope to watch a lot more. I would love to see a video on Mega Man.
Your Metroid Retrospectives have earned my like/share/subsribe. *tips hat* Awesome job.
You should try to get part 3 done.
Also, could you do Megaman retrospective? I love the series. (There's so many Megaman games it'll probably be like 4 videos.)
Such fascinating information! I'm loving this so much
I love Metroid since my early years, when I overcame my fears about the game itself to taste all of its impressive details of an exploring-puzzle-shot-adventure-horror (rsrsrs) game. (I confess that I still play it with a little fear hehehe). Fantastic videos! Congratulations and THANKS A LOT!
Now that I think about it, Echoes and halo are really similar. Echoes is my favorite Metroid game EVAR, and one of my favorite games period.
I actually managed to find all the Artifacts in Metroid Prime as a kid without a guide. It wasn't just dumb luck though, if you scan the various totems at the Impact Site's entrance each one gives you a hint to find its respective artifact.

part 2 was great cant wait for part 3, oh look there it is on the right hand side of the screen, lol
Looks like I could play these some day.
ok i gotta know. is that you actually playing in the gameplay videos? if so, you are really friggin good. uber like

Great video! Unfortunately I ain't gonna watch the part 3 beacuse I haven't completed Prime 3 or Other M yet, but good job anyway :D
Samus could grab ledges in super metroid. This history lesson was great though.
10:20
lol it does kinda suck to be given that Grapple Beam in Prime 1 then lose it for the next 70% of the game x)

Great video about Metroid.
That was good. These Retrospectives are interesting. I remember G4 used to do a show similar to this before they turned to crap.
6:25, that statement is iffy. While the Pirates are known to take squatter's rights on deserted planets, it's debatable whether or not they were searching for another planet to colonize, per se. I NEVER had to look up a guide or walkthrough while playing Prime 1 when i was searching the artifacts
A history of Sly Cooper video would make my life
Ammo count was essential for the dark and light beams. If they were unlimited, there would be no reason to use the power beam and little use for missiles. Also you can criticize Fusion for linearity and Prime 1 for its open ended-ness, you cant do both

Keep it up you are doing great :)
also i freaking love metroid fusion

the only hard part of that game i had to go through is hiding from the infected power suit, and those parts are f***ing scary.
Zero Mission was fantastic. But honestly all of them are.
I totally found every artifact in Metroid Prime without a guide. Didn't even take me that long, either.
I had a guide to that game. I was a little kid so I ended up tearing it apart! XD
the artifacts weren't hard to find at all if you scanned the chozo statues were you bring the artifacts it basically tells you where they are
I think your videos and knowledge is great and do you still use Facebook and hope to get a new video from you soon.
Anybody else notice that the metroid prime footage looked like it was on the metroid prime trilogy game package for the wii?
May I ask is when the other one coming put
for me, fusion is the best of 2d metroids.
they had fusion in the 3ds ambassador program GBA games, but you can't really get it anywhere else then that :/
I need to play the classic Metroid games, ive only played the Prime series which I love and hoping they make another one as well.
Loophole in the chronological order, as metroid prime happens after Super Metroid 3, as Meta Ridley didn't come into play until after Ridley died in metroid 3
Her emphasis on the word Halo made me laugh. XD
Is Dark Samus, like Shadow Link? That would be cool.
Dark samus is a phazon enhanced metriod known as metriod prime after samus defeated it the creture stole her armour and fused with it becomin a clone of her but still with the parasitic need for phazon as such this clone needed phazon and became the major antagonist in the metriod prime trilogy.
Maybe next you could do other games like Skyrim or Dishonored or Minecraft
Could somebody guide me to what remix of Kraid's theme it is at 9:55?
We need a Metroid Prime style game again. I would so buy a Wii U for that.
Me too!
are you going to make your sonic retrospecitive half life 3?
I sure hope to god Metroid 5 will be along the lines of Super metroid, fusion and AM2R.
*But sir, they might use it to break the game."
"Nah.... They wouldn't do that."
Nope, that was a valid concern.😂😂
Other M, is pretty much fusion but with more story telling, and lots of raging fans.
Metroid Prime is actually very similar to Super Metroid. Mostly in terms of world areas.
"At least three times more cutscenes"
Three times zero is still zero.
subbed
Say what you want about Nintendo, but my NES still works from when I was a kid, both mine and my wife's PS2 shit the bed a while ago.
Wow 6:15 is a Tool Assisted Speedrun or TAS for short
I'll be interested to see what you have to say about Other M. :p
nice!
