Yeah, that's like half the reason why I want a game like that! The only lore that I went OUT of my way to get was Chozo and Space Pirate. All the other ones, I got just to complete them.
Samus was referred to as he in the instruction booklet, not because of an oversight, and only partially to make it a shock to the gamer. The story goes that not much was known about "him." Even the Federation didn't know she was a chick when they hired her for the first time. Yes, that story point was written to cover it up to the gamer too, because it was felt no one would play a video game with a female protagonist, but it WAS written in the story that they thought she was a man, so it's not like they're pulling a fast one or anything. Of course, this also means the prequels can't be canon, but that's a given since they're by a different writer anyway.
The Ceej Also, let's be fair. You're going by the retconned version of the story. In the canon, the Metroid's home planet was Zebes. SR388 is where the Space Pirates moved them to after Zebes was destroyed. That's why they mutate on SR388. Because their bodies react negatively to the atmosphere.
I don't remember that passage. I just remember the booklet for the original Metroid was referring to her with male pronouns and saying "not much is known about him." It is possible that one of the non-canon games mentions that it was thought she was a robot, but I'm fairly sure that wasn't mentioned in the canon.
+The Ceej Maybe,I gotta admit I saw this info many _many_ years ago and might have been altered through time, and I can't remember when I saw it. Again like I previously saidt,I might be wrong, and there's many chances I am in this particular case
When I first played Super smash bros melee and saw Kraid for the first time, I always thought he was in Metroid prime and I was so excited for him! I beat it and instead I fought a Crab-like monster and a flying squid.
Wouldn't now Be the perfect time for a Metroid Movie? you have more woman getting into science fiction thanks to Hunger games and this has been a good time for Female protagonists and as long as they get someone to make it less like a video game movie and more like a science fiction thriller then man you could walk away with some good stuff
I really would feel that the series should of been just different, amazing bounties each game, bringing loads of new stuff each game. I hope the next game is set out like Prime, and is set on something completely different.
Y'know, despite the lead dev for AM2R saying that Samus Returns was a good game and that if people want more Metroid they should definitely go support it.
"They removed the voice for sounding too sexual" I wish they still had that train of thought for when they let fucking terrible team ninja ruin everything about her.
Chip Roberts I did a touch of research and found some info about her name. metroid.wikia.com/wiki/Samus_Aran Check the 'Behind the Scenes' section and see what you think. I just recently got a Wii and have yet to play Corruption, so I haven't heard it for myself yet.
As a seasoned Metroid fan, I found Fusion to be refreshing, and while harder than Super Metroid, I didn't think it was all that bad, difficulty wise, with the possible exception of that when you first run into the Ki Hunters again during the plant life sequence, and maybe surviving SA-X early on. However, with forgiving save station mechanics, the former's reasonably easy if you're cautious as you explore, and the later is largely just sensible evasion. I LOVED how SA-X made me feel hunted.
It's really sad to see nintendo can't figure out what to do with this franchise. Every metroid game was awesome in its own right except OTHER: M which was a mixed bag. It had a lot of potential to invite fans to know more of one of the strongest female protagonists in gaming to reduce her to a lady(pun intended) emotionless monologues taking orders from a man when she's tough enough to handle her own. I hope someone from nintendo can can come up with a way to redeem their strongest female lead if a future title(s). That kiddie Metroid Federation force is a joke, I get they want expand on the audience with the Metroid franchise but Metroid isn't for kids but for those mature nintendo fans. Not everything needs to be kiddie-fied...
Dezza2241 same, but not many people wants remakes wick is kind of funny because most Mario games and many others have tons of remakes and nobody complains most of the people who complain are those who haven't played the game.
+Patrick star Thats because Mario games (the 2D ones) are simplistic and cater to a broader audience compared to Metroid. But as far as a NEW Metroid game, I wouldn't want another Prime entry. That trilogy is done so it's time for a new saga to continue the story. There's that Metroid Dread I've heard about years ago which might be a story after Prime 3 or continue after Fusion game. Whoever does it needs to make her a badass strong female lead as she was before Other: M.
I'm reading this and thinking "YES!" You're onto something there. How do we know there's not some Chozo colony that's been isolationist or something until now? What if there's a plague or something after an alien ship lands and infects them all "Invasion" style? That's just one idea. Nintendo could come up with a dozen more. I'd LOVE to see more of the Chozo and their mythology! You should be working for Nintendo. This is a great idea.
Woooo! Metroid! :D As you can see by my profile pic, I am a huge Metroid fan. I am so happy a Did You Know has been done for this series, thank you so very much for this.
did you know? metroid, as well as other franchises such as paper Mario, and many others, are actually listed in the genre on Nintendo's website titled, "Things that were awesome, but we haven't known what to do with them for a while, so here's some Shit!"
FlippantFoe Hm? I don't follow. if anything, I'm mocking Nintendo for not knowing what to do with perfectly good IPs. an "insufferable fanboy" denies that there are any problems with current games, or they refuse to regard ANY other games as coming even close to the things they worship. there are plenty of non Nintendo games I absolutely love. hell, I haven't even turned a Nintendo console on in like 2 years. so, in short.........what exactly seems to be the problem here? cuz I'm sort-of confused on the logic behind your response
Nightmare still remains one of the most freaky bosses ever featured in a Metroid game. I think I still have stronger memories of first playing the intro of Super Metroid in a store though. Super Metroid was in a whole new league over what came before, and I remember that by the time I'd gone through both Ridley and the space station escape, I was just trembling from the adrenaline rush. To be fair though, if I was that young when I played Fusion and fought Nightmare, it'd have been total WTF. D:
The "-oid" ending doesn't have to come from "android". It comes from the Latin "eidos", meaning "form or shape". Also, considering the history of the word metropolis (the long-form of metro), coming from "mḗtēr", meaning mother, and "pólis", meaning city; "metroid" could easily mean "mother-shaped". Ergo, it's not a weird name at all, considering her gender. Do you guys even research this stuff?
I'm glad someone is using Latin, since many of our words come from a Latin word. Take the Pokemon Umbreon. It's a shadow Pokemon, and umbra in Latin means shadow. I actually take Latin as a second language in school. Keep Latinizing guys, keep on trucking.
***** If we were to go power crazy and try to take the universe, then it would be ours for cetrain. I just kill the stuff that dangers people or that I have been told to kill.
Actually, Mister Chief, I'm well versed in my Halo lore. Guilty Spark didn't put out anywhere near a single terra-watt of energy. At any rate, that specific weapon isn't that powerful. Either way, considering that Sammy here was raised on a planet with nearly 1000x the Gravity of Earth. She showed massively superhuman feats in these conditions. Given this, If she punched you, out of her suit, with you in your suit, you would die.
Not to mention that the story itself is basically the same order of events as in Fusion. End up at a research lab, explore the different sectors, find out about Sector Zero where they are using Metroids as bio-weapons, fight a reincarnated Ridley, and even alot of elements are similar. You could only get power-ups in Fusion when those unnamed scientists said it was ok. I honestly wished they labeled Other M as a "What If" scenario. That way, it wouldn't retcon Prime (3 in particular) from canon.
P Ferreira I suspect that age and prestige can take some of that creative edge from artists. I imagine that guys like Lucas and Sakamoto's creative indulgences were kept in check by the fact that they didn't have as much power as they do now and by budget restraints.
Did you know: the roars of Kraid from Metroid Zero Mission are taken from the made for TV Steven Spielberg film "Duel" from when the truck drives off the cliff. The same roar was used in Jaws after the shark explodes.
Damn I hate that censorship crap. I would very much like to see the original, Japanese sprites however a Google search nets me plenty of nude and even pornographic drawings of Samus but not what I actually want. Are you fucking kidding me?
tgsachris "In Super Metroid, Samus INITIALLY appeared naked as she died. She was given clothes to avoid controversy outside of Japan." This means that while in development, she appeared nude. But they changed it before the game was released, and this change was made to all versions, including the Japanese one. Play the Japanese version buddy.
Well it's also not a ton of pixels for creating the image. So it's not like you would see much anyway. Even if she had nipples, the Japanese don't care as much about boobs as us, silly westerners do.
weirdkid5 That's a good point. Hadn't thought of that. Could have also been that it was released in Japan but recalled because parents complained. I know boobs are no big deal in Japan now but Super Metroid was 1994 so things could have changed.
Other M's gameplay was really enjoyable. Minus the progression. That's the only reason to like it. Actually that's a lie. It was a very pretty game, nice to look at. That's the only other reason to like it. Other M and the Zelda CDi games are a perfect example of why establishedly silent protagonists shouldn't speak. Someone get Team Ninja some muzzles.
I love that the entire reason that Samus is a girl is because they thought, "Hey, this would be a cool twist!"

I guess we got that Metroid 2 DX after all
Yeah, that's like half the reason why I want a game like that! The only lore that I went OUT of my way to get was Chozo and Space Pirate. All the other ones, I got just to complete them.
Metroids makers need to cut Dan OBannon a check
At 0:50 they say Pelé's real name "was" so and so, but he's still alive
It will be right eventually
+insertusernamehere51 That's a pleasant thought 😂😂
2:04 take a shot every time he says Crocomire
My mind was blown away into small fragments of awesome in less than 8 minutes. Holy shit at all those easter eggs and references.
Another interesting similarity between Metroid and Aliens is that their most recent entries had poorly written stories (Other M and Colonial Marines)
XD lol
orangeapples Better theory:
Like in Colonial Marines, Platoon 6 (or 7) are picked off one by one. Almost feel sorry for them.
5:50 Lol it's coming for 3DS now
Samus was referred to as he in the instruction booklet, not because of an oversight, and only partially to make it a shock to the gamer.
SR388 is where the
Space Pirates moved them to after Zebes was destroyed. That's why they
mutate on SR388. Because their bodies react negatively to the
atmosphere.
+The Ceej when she first got hired by the Federation,I think she was thought to be a robot by the Fed'. I might be wrong though
With the number of times they've retconned the story, who knows?
Can you guys make a part 2
Crocomire - Titanusaurus
Draygon - Anguirus
but is it me or, does Baby Metroid’s death cry sound like Mothra?
What if Samus' Morph Ball inspired Sonic's Spin Dash?
+Jorge Rueda metroid: 1986
sonic the hedgehog: 1991
I'll take that as a yes?
Jorge Rueda
shit i read your comment wrong, i thought you said sonic's spin dash inspired the morph ball
Jorge Rueda That could be a possibility. 🤔
*"Sonic Speed!"*
I beat metroid fusion and zero mission this month
i beat it today
The Great Arceus nice
yooo im playing them again right now as well haha. God damn this game handles great!
When I first played Super smash bros melee and saw Kraid for the first time, I always thought he was in Metroid
prime and I was so excited for him! I beat it and instead
I fought a Crab-like monster and a flying squid.
Well metroid 2 is being remade for the 3ds and switch
George Brady
i think you mean 3ds only
The first thing that comes to my mind when someone mentions Metroid Fusion is SA-X. damn she/he/it is creepy >_
Definitely an IT, lol
I would love to see a game that comes after Fusion so that they can develop her metroid body to a greater extent.
Who is watching this after the announcement of Prime 4 and Samus Returns?
Wouldn't now Be the perfect time for a Metroid Movie? you have more woman getting into science fiction thanks to Hunger games and this has been a good time for Female protagonists and as long as they get someone to make it less like a video game movie and more like a science fiction thriller then man you could walk away with some good stuff
we already have a metroid movie, it's called Alien
come on we both know that alien only inspired Metriod it is it's own thing
LazerDude99 while yes, metroid is it's own thing, a movie would on the surface feel all to similar to an alien knock-off
you would have to make changes that is for sure, because you would need a supporting cast and so you would need more characters
No.
This is the first Metroid-Related Item I've ever seen that shows the official arts for the enemies and bosses. I will never have a good dream again!
I'm here after Metroid dread
Many of these facts I knew and some I didn't. Very interesting.
I really would feel that the series should of been just different, amazing bounties each game, bringing loads of new stuff each game. I hope the next game is set out like Prime, and is set on something completely different.
And then they actually DID remake Metroid 2. And people whined that it wasn't AM2R. Thanks, guys!
Y'know, despite the lead dev for AM2R saying that Samus Returns was a good game and that if people want more Metroid they should definitely go support it.
"They removed the voice for sounding too sexual" I wish they still had that train of thought for when they let fucking terrible team ninja ruin everything about her.
The way you worded that is epic and deserves more love.
Secret Gamecube = AWESOME!!! (IDK know why LOL)
cannot wait for the next metroid game, i dont own a wii u but if it came out on it i would buy one just for it
Same here!
I would love to see events after Fusion as that´s my favourite game from the series.
Samus "Iran"? Does this mean I've been saying it wrong? I always call her Samus "Erin". SO do most of my friends.
Yep.
Not necessarily. They pronounce it "Erin" in Corruption and Other M; and she also pronounces it that way, so...
Chip Roberts
I've always pronounced it "uh-RAN".
They pronounce it that way in the Collegehumor video; I usually just pronounce it like the country...
Chip Roberts
I did a touch of research and found some info about her name.
metroid.wikia.com/wiki/Samus_Aran
Check the 'Behind the Scenes' section and see what you think. I just recently got a Wii and have yet to play Corruption, so I haven't heard it for myself yet.
0:49 he died today, RIP.
Whos here after the announcement of Metroid 5 :)
I’m here after the announcement of Prime 4
My favourite game, metroid ^^
Not everything needs to be kiddie-fied...
preach brother. we got to defend our Lady samus tons of respect for her. I agree with you :D
***** let's hope is not a let down
I want a super metroid remake.. That'd be cool
We need a 3D rendered Metroid side scroller for the 3DS.
Yes. Preferably made by Retro Studios.
Psychkemia Even more preferably Metroid Fusion/Super Metroid
Brendan Matthews Those were my favorite. A mixture would be best.
Metroid 5! (Rumored as Metroid Dread.
Well, now that Metroid: Samus Returns was released for the 3DS..
Pele!
Good thing they are remaking metroid 2.
Robbie Rotten why are you here?
Woooo! Metroid! :D As you can see by my profile pic, I am a huge Metroid fan. I am so happy a Did You Know has been done for this series, thank you so very much for this.
did you know? metroid, as well as other franchises such as paper Mario, and many others, are actually listed in the genre on Nintendo's website titled, "Things that were awesome, but we haven't known what to do with them for a while, so here's some Shit!"
good to know
FlippantFoe Hm? I don't follow. if anything, I'm mocking Nintendo for not knowing what to do with perfectly good IPs. an "insufferable fanboy" denies that there are any problems with current games, or they refuse to regard ANY other games as coming even close to the things they worship. there are plenty of non Nintendo games I absolutely love. hell, I haven't even turned a Nintendo console on in like 2 years.
so, in short.........what exactly seems to be the problem here? cuz I'm sort-of confused on the logic behind your response
Seriously, Super Metroid 3D for the 3DS.
Nintendo would make serious money from me, just saying.
And than you get this bullshit fp shooter with the name metroid. Metroid is dead ;(
@@nargaman261 hi
It's actually Greece...
If I share this video, then maybe the Metroid fanbase will stop pelting me with questions. This ought to shut them up.
***** Oh
Fun fact: In mp: hunters, it is revealed that some beams are in the terra-watt range. Samus could literally one-shot master chief.
FadedDrummer I think that you are forgetting that I wouldn't harm Chief. Only if he were to try to kill me first.
I used to think that metroid was a boy and Samus was a girl when I first played it Fail :(
DON'T WORRY! Some people do fall on that first hurdle, but it won't happen anymore.
Yoshio Sakamoto is the George Lucas of gaming. The man committed franchise harakiri with Other M.
+evillink1 Everyone has their off days I guess.
P Ferreira I suspect that age and prestige can take some of that creative edge from artists. I imagine that guys like Lucas and Sakamoto's creative indulgences were kept in check by the fact that they didn't have as much power as they do now and by budget restraints.
evillink1 I think you're right.
I don't think even in Japan she was nude.
weirdkid5 I dont think you watched the video before you posted that
tgsachris "In Super Metroid, Samus INITIALLY appeared naked as she died.
To safe anyones time, you can't find a official naked samus sprite from super metroid.
My favorite game franchise of all time. Prime 4 please be good.
Retro Studios is back, the game won't be bad
@@brobunni praying!
I had no idea of this stuff
Did you know, Nintendo fucked up the Franchise with Metroid Other M?
No kidding. Other M is all kinds of wrong.
The reason I don't like Other M is because of 10 hour cut scenes
Money_Milkshake I've got lots of reasons to dislike it.
Ok sorry. That's the only one ive played other than Super Metroid and i still like Other M...
