  • I had picked this kit a while ago and decided recently to build it. I lost the original footage (it ended up going through the washing machine!!) along with another build so I had to re-shoot them after the fact! So an abbreviated build and quick run on the track!
    You guys are all awesome and I appreciate all the great comments and questions from everyone. Really enjoying talking to you all in the comments section.

    No more words to say about the DT-03. It's one of my most liked chassis. But as a child of the 80s I have to say cars have to have corners and edges, so I like the Fighter body more. Nice video Addam, thanks for showing👍

    • @AddamsPlayground
      @AddamsPlayground  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah the body on the Racing Fighter is more inline of the classics and the Neo Fighter is more of a fuselage almost. Both are great but like you I kind of prefer defined shape to the cars!

      They really are good performing buggies with a nice price tag. I have only broken the servo saver on one of them but those Tamiya servo savers are prone to just snapping. I don't mind it as it protects the rest of the steering bit s from damage!

      I do think it is a rather underrated kit as they do perform very well and cost very little compared to many other 2wd buggies. I do enjoy the DT03 chassis a lot and they all run very well. They don't take much to be super great cars!!

      Thanks! It is a fun and pretty easy kit to build up and other than those front stickers it is an easy one to finish as well. I had toyed with the idea of painting it another color but I had saw a few done in non-box art paint schemes and liked it. Once I got it in my hand I really did like the contrast of the orange and black so I went with it and I do like it a lot!

    The DT-03 will be a future classic. So glad I chose this buggy as my first RC after a very long hiatus. I'm curious about the DT-03T Aqroshot too. Those don't come up too often.

    • @AddamsPlayground
      @AddamsPlayground  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Aqroshot is on my list of things to get the moment I see it back in stock! I think it may drive a bit better out of the box with the heavier and wider front tires. I think that would have to help the light feeling front end and the understeer from it. As soon as they show up here again I am getting one for sure!!

    I like it! Orange was not available when I built mine. I painted it black. I was going to go stickerless for the Batmobile look but ended up putting on the decals. Nice job! The grey stickers up front are the hardest

    • @AddamsPlayground
      @AddamsPlayground  ปีที่แล้ว

      I had tinkered with the idea of painting it another color. I had seen a few done in non-box art paint schemes and liked it. once I got it in my hand I really did like the contrast of the orange and black so I went that way. I am glad paint seems to be easier to fin now. A year a go it was hit or miss if you were going to find what you wanted in stock anywhere! Thankfully my LHS has a full rack in stock now so I can be fairly confident they will have what I want. I agree the front sticker are the trickiest of the whole kit and make this kit a little tougher than the Neo to get finished but thankfully I was able to get them on without and major issue!

    • @AddamsPlayground
      @AddamsPlayground  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! I had looked at it prior but could only find the XB version which to me is defeating the purpose of a Tamiya kit by it being pre-built but I also didn't want to pay the roughly $60 extra for it. those front decals are a bit tricky but not hard. Just take some patience and care putting on. I think it looks a bit tougher and meaner than the neo fighter. Possible the pink and the big cartoon frog on my neo fighter softens it up looks wise a little! LOL! Focus mister, you need to get it done before you start getting snow up there!!!

    I think the color combination with the black wheels looks great. The car looked great on the track. I noticed that it wanted to wheelie on the turf section of the track. I have a friend with the same chassis and he runs in a parking lot series and he's trying to get it to turn better.

    • @AddamsPlayground
      @AddamsPlayground  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am going to stick a couple of the self adhesive wheel balance weights in the front to get a little more weight up there. you can find them on Amazon and most auto parts stores. I would like to find some stiffer springs as well for the rear. I think they make a sway bar kit for the DT03 as well but I have not ventured that far down the road yet. Some of the Schumacher "Cut Stagger" front tires may help as well. I think I am going to get a set for mine, I have just not ordered them yet.

    Grats Addam. Two wonderful Buggies you have there. I am with you. The DT-03 Neo / Racing Fighter are slightly underrated by the Tamiya community in my opinion. But I will definately pick one of these up. The price is so good, you can build them as a side project and once they are finished you have a nice runner with an acceptable perfomance. Have fun 🤘😎

      Thanks Nanni, I have seen the chrome on and it looks cool but I think the chrome one are best suited for collections of shelf queens. It is a niche finish that quickly gets torn up when driving them and it kind of ruins the idea of the pretty mirror finish with scratches on them! They are very straight forward builds and a great driving buggies. They are wonderful buggies for the price point and have extras included not on most kits around this price! If you opt to go fast in them it'll handle it but you will need to add some weight up front to aid in on power steering.

    Very good comparsion. Your sticker information ist also interesting, because I hate painting, and sticker jobs.
    For the Neo Fighter front wheels, the inner sponge Sp-1448 from the Zahhak 2WD Buggy DN-01 fits. In Germany most of the time, the Neo Fighter is a litte bit cheaper so I prefer (and have) the Neo Fighter.

    • @AddamsPlayground
      @AddamsPlayground  ปีที่แล้ว

      The painting and stickering can be the most time consuming and tedious parts of a build so I get it! Thanks for the tire tip! It used to be the same here with the Neo Fighter being cheap but I think they realized they sold a lot more of them so they raised the prices on them. I recently got this one for less the going prices of the Neo Fighter. Thankfully I got my Neo before the price increases!!

      Thanks! It does suffer from a heavy booty! The stock springs are a little soft but I crammed a few extra spring spacers in the Neo Fighter to compensate for it. I'll probably do the same for the RF as well as I did see some scrapes on the rear end after running it.

Tower servo , Hobbywing speed controller & Carson reciever & control . Plus all blacked out wheels 🛞 ( wider wheels in front ) rather than the skinny wheels . 11.02, not bad! That’s one of the faster times if I remember right, that thing is beautiful but it reminded me of a question I had meant to ask a while back. How do you go about masking the interior of the body to prep for paint? I got some fat fingers and I just can’t seem to get the masking right on the windows and such. I know you’ve got years and years of experience but I was mainly wondering if you had any tips and tricks that help.

    • @AddamsPlayground
      @AddamsPlayground  ปีที่แล้ว

      It is pretty quick around the track. I think the fastest is somewhere around 10.3/10.4 so this was not bad at all for a fresh out of the box build! So for window mask the best way is to completely cut out the masking with the backing applied or if it is pre-cut then I remove all the excess masking material and cut really close to the pre-cut masking. Then peel back one small corner of the backing and cut it off, maybe a 1/4 to 1/2 inch of it. It should stay rolled back a little, leave it like that as you don't want it to grab anything. Then I stick the masking up to the window on the inside and get it positioned where it needs to go and and then stick the one corner down. once that is stuck and the mask is in the right spot fold it over and begin peeling the backing away. I will get about half of it exposed and start sticking it down carefully making sure it stays lined up with the window. once that is down I then pull the rest of the backing away and finish laying it down. I do not press it all down as I am laying it. I tend to run a line from the lower corner of the mask to the upper corner across from it diagonally to get it down and in place but it could be peeled up if needed. Once you have it down nicely, start from the line you pressed down and work you way out from that line smooth trying to get all the air bubble out if it. Don't fret over a bubble or two if you have some. As long as the edges are down and have no creases the air bubble is not going to bother anything. I used to worry about them and pop them but run the risk of paint bleeding into the pinhole.

    Super fine video as always sir! How do you feel it drives compared to the Sand Viper? 🇬🇧🇺🇸🇬🇧🇺🇸

    • @AddamsPlayground
      @AddamsPlayground  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you!! The Sand Viper is a little more agile and has a little more steering overall. This one has a slightly longer wheelbase and is a little light in the front end and adding more power than the torque tuned motor is just going to amplify that. Now the Sand Viper was also a little light in front too but that was getting pushed around by the GT Tuned motor. A few self adhesive wheel balance weights up front will help the on power and off power steering a lot. A super cheap and easy fix. The only other thing is the rear shock springs are a little soft so a few extra spring spacers will fix that.

Too bad I couldn't have found it sooner as it was some of the cleanest footage I have ever had!!! I'll see myself out now....

    It looked good on the track, where does it place on your leader board?

    Seeing this kit pop up alot
    Would you recommend a brushless swap on this? Don't really know much about Tamiya

    • @AddamsPlayground

      They are really fun buggies for the price for sure! The gearboxes on these hold up to decent power and I have seen a lot of folks running brushless systems on them. I think the 3600-4000kv would be more than enough for it. Any more than that and you'll be blowing the tires off it!! LOL!!

    Does it come with the transmitter??

    • @AddamsPlayground
      @AddamsPlayground  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Currently they do not have the full RTR version available. You can get these in two ways, the kit version you have to build and paint yourself, Tamiya part #58628. Or they have the assembled version that just requires you to install your own radio gear and steering servo, Tamiya part #TAM46702. The kit is currently $124 and the assembled version is $192 at Amain Hobbies. A budget radio system will run you $40-65 and a servo will be $15-25 roughly.

    I would like to build mine because now you're going to have to open one that's built and put new ball bearings in it because it doesn't come with ball bearings.

      Mine has bearings in it, I did not get the XB version. I got the kit version.

    I like the racing fighter better than the neo.. kinda resembles an original RC-10

    • @AddamsPlayground
      @AddamsPlayground  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It does have the classic body line to it for sure. It is kind of like a Hornet body and an RC 10 body got smashed together!

    I prefer the racing fighter buggy body over the neo fighter however like the wing and wheels from the neo fighter better. I think it’s the graphics on the racing fighter that lose me. Love the orange however.

    • @AddamsPlayground

      Yeah they both have their pros and cons. I kind of see the Neo Fighter more of a blank slate to do whatever you want to with it. The Fighter Buggy has all the cage frame decals you kind of need our it looks odd. Both are fun and are decent performing buggies for a reasonable price so you can't be mad at that! LOL!

    The racing fighter would have better turn in would be quicker and more razor sharp and turning than the other one.
