- Here's my take on a 'Top 5' of the most essential, basic and affordable upgrades for your Tamiya DT-02 or Tamiya DT-03 buggy ... All without breaking the budget or Tamiya warranty!
Would love to hear your personal opinion about this Top 5 list (did I get it right or wrong?) and I would also love to hear about your personal DT Buggy and DT experiences as well as the set-ups of your Tamiya DT-02 or DT-03 2WD 1/10 Entry-Level Buggy RC Car. Let us share. The comment section can be of great inspiration to us all.
Remember, this is just Part 1 and targeted for people trying out a Tamiya kit for the first time or wondering how to start upgrading on a reasonable budget. In Part 2 we will discuss further upgrades and hop-up options to increase performance, run time, top speed, acceleration and durability.
You can find a list of the most common DT-02 and DT-03 buggy assembly kits down below. Some are supplied with a few of the basic upgrades and some are not. Check your exact specifications of your personal unit to see which features from the Top 5 list your model already comes with stock (or not).
Apart from a different amount and size of ball bearings these basic upgrades can also be applied to your Tamiya DT-01 Buggy and other entry-level RC Cars from Tamiya.

Many different versions, special editions and XB (expert built/ready to run) models exist. Only the assembly kit 'main/core family members' up to 2019 are listed above. Worth to mention though, is that the DT-01 Chassis was introduced with the ready-to-run model Tamiya Rookie Rabbit (57501) in 1991 and that an MS Edition (49475) of the DT-02 Sand Viper was released in 2007.

Hi Mikael. Yeah I think that your top 5 is bang on. I was just noticing that the main ones you are showing have the less good front ribbed tyres. The ones you have on the Racing Fighter are much better off road as they dig in to the ground more so less understeer. Worth upgrading if the kit doesn't come with those. Anyway, good vid mate :-)
Hi Pete! Thanks! Glad you agree. Ahh, yeah, the front tires are included in part 2, where I will discuss them. Only got three pairs of the good ribbed front tires with the Star Dish wheels, and then three pairs of the stock spiked rear tires and star dish. That’s the set I prefer on the lawn. And then I am moving those around on the DT buggies, depending on which buggy is running. All my DT-01’s got them on now. The star dish wheels are becoming more and more expensive and mostly out of stock when I order. That’s why I settled for this system, for now anyways. You can see one of the sets in the video on one of my DT-01’s. . All the other sets you see are just for the shelf or for speed runs 🤭🙂 But I still think the other five upgrades are more important than the front tires (when it comes to having fun).
Seriously fantastic advice. Just the type of advice that will keep someone in the hobby. Many people I've met have/had no idea how cheap it can be to discover this exciting fun hobby. Your video is perfect for the newbe

Really nice to see this, and I am lucky to actually have these upgrades on my two 03's. I think the slower one (Aqroshot) is actually still with the 17T alu pinion, so I think I should actually get a steel one, it's a good reminder. I'm looking forward to part two, I think I can learn a lot there!
Thanks, my friend. Sounds like some good set ups you got there. Would love an Aqroshot too some day. Yeah, the steel pinion is cheap and saves one from a lot of trouble later on. But I also got cars with the stock alloy still.

I installed a lot of upgrades on my DT-02 ("DT-02 Resurrection" video). Today I wonder if I did not put a little too much ...
In fact I find that now it is more difficult to find the good settings ... The other disadvantage is the fact that it is is seriously weighed down with metal parts. Hmm, I think we'll talk about it in your next videos.

Hi Alex! Thank you! Great to hear you agree. Yeah, I get carried away too with the upgrades. But as hobbyists I don’t think there should be any rule against over-upgrading. I remember your DT-02 very well and absolutely love it. Projects are fun and everything doesn’t have to make perfectly sense, performance wise. My projects certainly doesn’t always. Hi there, nice basic review of the two different chassis and simple, inexpensive upgrades. I think you’re spot on, battery packs, bearings, oil dampers, pinion gears and motor. All relatively cheap, I would certainly go bearings straight away when ordering the kit, to save time on stripping down the car again to replace those terrible while plastic 1150 bushings. I would even say the dampers should also be changed immediately to oil filled units too. Other than that your right on ! Great video take care and all the best 😊😉
Hi John, yeah, I build all mine with ball bearings from the start too. Usually these ones, the two Top DT-02s, the viper and gator, and then the two DT-03’s, come stock with oil filled dampers. And thank you! All the best to you too

I definitely think the five basic upgrades can provide some fun for people not looking to spend a fortune upgrading, but just want some fun. Just a bonus. Could be a channel with both food and RC’s. Maybe eating waffles while running RC’s and waffling..
Another upgrade I would personally recommend is the servo saver. The kit servo saver is pretty terrible, swap it out for the high torque servo saver, much sturdier and way more precise.
Hi Barry. Yeah, I hope to remember that one in the next part. It’s a good upgrade, but requires a strong servo (or a person that’s fine with the risk). Good tip.
Mine was originally a holiday buggy so I then turned it into falcon tribute.....yellow CVAs l,the yellow wheels from the holiday buggy and metal drive cups with metal dogbones, finally I put a sand viper shell on in the red and black of the falcon,with falcon decals...

Yes the front tires that come with the racing fighter are much better than the ones that come with the Neo fighter. My dt-03 that I run has oil filled shocks, 25kg servo, brushless combo, metal driveshafts, the Tamiya upgraded servo horn which really has helped the front as I’ve blitzer beetle wheels on it, the bearings really make these cars smooth and save on wear. I bash it but think I’ve about got it right as the back end does not bottom out anymore. Another great video and every upgrade you’ve shown is good for your car 👍😎 Mikael keep up the great content just one last thing pls I need a wheelie bar?? Any suggestions? 🙏
Hi bro! Yeah, great front tires. They will really dig in off road, compared to the Neo Fighter tires. Uhh, sounds like an awesome set up you got there. Hmm. Wheelie bar. Maybe the lunch box wheelie bar? Or some of the after market ones for the Lunch Box. That one definitely works on the Stadium Blitzer Beetle gear box so maybe it works on the DT-02/03 too. Right now I can’t remember the placement of screws etc.
@@NordicRC cheers Mikael I hope your well? I’ve seen the lunchbox wheelie bar fitted on the dt-03 chassis right on the back. Think you have to drill a small hole but it can be modified?? Atm I’m waiting for a beetle shell and chassis skin for a 144001 hoping to do a bit of a dragster beetle…🤔 💨 And I whacked my TT-02b on Sunday and took a chunk out of the wheel 🙈 . All good fun 🤩 so new wheels in the new year 👍take care bro 😎
Hi there two things I noticed on your upgraded 02/03 which you haven’t done yet which you could do. 1) low friction step pins to mount the front shock on the wishbones. 2) you can use tt01suspension shafts as king pins to replace the screw pin that goes through the c/hub and steering knuckle, gives you smoother steering. 3) replace
3) replace all the screw pins with tl01 and Tt01 suspension pins make everything move more freely with less friction. Hope that may help :)
Yeah, I’ve seen several replacing those. I just don’t see it as a basic upgrade to include in the top 5. But thanks for the input and info. Very helpful.
I'm from Australia and my DT-03 fighter buggy that I brought pre built came without the oiled filled shocks. I can tell you now it was very bouncy with just the springs
Uhh, only thought it was the ones in Japan. Maybe they are more wide spread than I thought. But yeah, lot's of Tamiyas XB models come down graded. The bouncy Desert Gator you see in the vid, is an XB. The kit version comes with oil filled shocks, adjustable upper arms, metal dogbones and full ball bearings.
Great video.👍 I really prefer the DT-03. Because it comes along with oil filled shocks. If Tamiya hasn't upgraded the 02-kits, they still have friction dampers. In my mind the DT-03 is the actual best kit in comparison price for the fitting you get. Upgrades are cheap, too. A great car for beginners as well as for hobby professionals. I'm looking forward for your next video with more uprades.
One thing I'd like to admit: The standard Tamiya ESC, which is in the kit, won't work with the SILVER Sport Tuned Motor. The Motor has 23 turns and the ESC limit is minimum 25 turns. The BLACK has 25T and is a cheap tuning option to increase the speed. Or change the ESC😉
Hi! Great reading you. Interesting. I think the DT-02 Sand Viper , DT-02 Desert Gator and DT-02 MS definitely got higher specs, apart from the motor, than all the DT-03’s. They come with oil filled shocks, semi turn buckles and full ball bearings. But that can be upgraded on the DT-03. The DT-03 chassis and towers have some advantages compared to the DT-02 though. Not sure why your ESC has a limit of 25T? I think all mine come with a limit of a 23T Sport tuned motor.

My story about the limitation of the ESC: I had a issue with Tamiya's Super Stock Motors and the TBLE02. After a few minutes the cars stopped without any reason. I thought they get too hot and putted a fan on and a heat sink on the motor. Both solutions dididn't work. So I researched a little bit and found out, that I had ignored the motor limit on the ESC. The standard ESC is limeted to 25 turns and upwards. I had just checked it, so I don't talk trash accidently. It is mentioned in the manual, too (but hey, I'm a guy, I'm doing and not reading😂😂😂). Now I use the Hobbywing Quicrun 1060. And no more unplaned stoppings. This ESC is cheap and has a Tamiya-plug, so I'm fine with this solution.
But maybe the TBLEs have specifications that differ dependiong on the region they are sold...
I definitely have never seen a TEU or TBLM limited to 25T. They all say ‘sport tuned’, and even the black is a 23T even though it’s not specified. But the Super Stock is a whole other motor. Same ‘23T’ but higher RPM specs. So even though I have seen people run their standard Tamiya ESC with it with no trouble, it’s not specified to handle it. So the 23T Sport Tuned limit is just for the Sport tuned, not necessarily any other 23T. Don’t worry I believe you’re not talking trash 😅 I will have another look at my manuals again before doing part 2 of this DT upgrade video.
And yeah, love my 1060 too. Same 60A as the Tamiya ones, but waterproof and with a LiPo cut off. A good alternative to Tamiya.
Nice upgrades..I have the DT02 buggies... So what chassis is stronger better of a basher I know the DT02 buggies are pretty darn tough.
Thanks, Steve. Yeah, love your Rover and Fighter. I think in terms of performance and durability the DT-03 has some advantages. The DT-02 definitely has issues with the front shock tower and bulk head, in terms of durability. The 03 has a hard brittle front tower as well, but at least that isn’t a part of a bulk head that needs to be replaced. The 03 is also better balanced and with a longer wheel base.
Can a 19T pinion gear be used with the sport tuned motor on the DT-02? The instruction manual says to only use the 17T if you upgrade to the sport tuned motor.

Good point on the battery. I just purchased a Lunchbox for my 8 yr old naphew and got him a Lipo with it. I'm ordering him a NiMh as we speak. I don't think it's wise for me to give him a Lipo, my sister wont be too happy to find out that her house burnt down because of me.
Yeah, I know a lot of people try to discourage people from having fun running with NiMHs, but yes for the beginner and youngsters like your nephew a NiMH is a much better option. The risks with it are so small compared to a LiPo.
Get yourself two 5x11x4 flanshed bearrings for the inner side of your front wheels and it has no wheel wobble anymore ✌🏻

@@NordicRC You're welcome, just look out that the flansh is 1mm. Then it's a perfect fit and the wobble is gone.
even the basic 4 channel or three channel Dumbo radio that I have would be good and it's cheaper than probably that reflex wheel.
i spend a lot to get ALL upgrade for the dt03, even the less common. i highly suggest the stabilizer, a good 2s lipo + a cheap brushless combo, the carson all terrain weels 5009/0027 or 0136 for onroad and carpet race, the stock ones are incredibly goodfor offroad and have and incredible grip . i got as a start the metal driveshaft but than i moved to a ball diff with cvd tamiya driveshaft universal, a good chinese speed servo (8 kg is decent even if u go brushless, the car is very small and will handle fine) and a flysky gt2e if u want to go cheap and have a very good basic transmitter , very decent compared for the same price carson one. the essential one that u absolutely need if u mount a metal gear sevo is either a 5 euro stock servo saver since the one u get will wear off fast or the hight torque one that will last longer (the small teeth get ruined with constant metal cotnact and the servo saver will start slipping without control). If u have still the stock servo saver CHECK THE ENDPOINT of your servo, especially metal. in such a small car no servo motor will get ruined or gear teeth broken but instead the servo saver teeth will worn out fast . Remeber, no matter how much u upgrade a good brushoess combo and a decent servo + transmitter reciever combo will make the difference, for the rest will always be a 2wd buggy i can be competitive but sadly always topped by 4wd alternatives. also carbon fiber shocktower front and rear are absolutely useful and very resistents, since they are very adjustable, forget turnbuckles since will just destabilize more the front weel and add some unecessary wiggle!

Only one thing: The Carson All Terrain Tires actually wear up more quickly on tarmac than the Tamiya spiked ones (check my video on that). When I run buggies on tarmac I use radial tires or other ones designed for on road. More durability ☺️
@@NordicRC i mostly run on carpet onroad so they barely wear off, but yes i tried myself after a few brushless run they wear off fast

Hi Jesse. Ahh, a torque tuned and 19T pinion is a cheap and good upgrade to add a little extra. But yeah, if you wanna go fast you need something else with a higher RPM.
I always get ball bearings for all my kits before I will ever build them and I don't like using stock motors less I think it's particularly good for that particular car because it may be slower in real life to me how it was built like a Volkswagen beetle I think that should use the 5:40 nothing higher than men I'd want a little faster motor in that same same with little faster motor in the teeth the Citron models but I have the 540 in the regular sit right in the rally one would have a faster one but that's how I go I think in my mind I know which cars are faster in real life compared to others and that's what I would want for me.
There’s nothing wrong with nimh. All we had 30 years ago was 6-7 cell nicd and the modern nimh give you plenty of punch on these cars, and you’re correct in saying nothing to worry about with Lipo issues. Only advantage to lipo is a bit more punch and maybe a bit longer run time
One more advantage: LiPo voltage won't drop as drastically as NiMH during run time. But I agree. I use both. LiPo when I have the time to charge and storage charge properly. NiMH still works for all the other runs and for initial tests. And no fire hazard :-)
If you were going to have just 1 Tamiya 2wd buggy, just to have 1 and do some light running with it... which would you want, DT02 or DT03?
I am looking to get a few Tamiya kits, but can't decide which ones.... I know they won't compare to our Tekno and AE race kits, but I just want a few Tamiya rigs in our collection and want them to be decently fun to drive around sometimes... not pogo springs, decent steering , etc... would likely use Torque Tuned motors or something no faster than a Reedy Radon 19t...
The Neo Fighter is one possibility that is available where I am...
Hi Isaac! I think the DT-03 would be an excellent choice! Easy assembly. There’s also some classic cars that run good if you want the 80’s vibe. Like the Nova Fox, Wild One etc. But if not, the DT-03 or DT-02 would be a great way to experience the Tamiya kits.
I bought the silver Sport Tuned motor off Amazon last month for under $18, which was only $0.30 more than the Torque-Tuned. As of today, the sale price is still on if anybody is interested. It's usually $30.
Sounds like a very good deal indeed! Where I buy my stuff they are usually above 20€
Got a holiday buggy, just upgraded the motor to a hpi racing firebolt 15t motor and Tamiya 18t pinion. It’s a whole new animal now. Was pretty mundane on the stock 380
Sounds nice! Must have been the 19T pinion. But it sounds fast! 36 kph with just the 25T stock 540 motor and the 19T pinion.
@@NordicRC actually it’s got an 18tooth Tamiya pinion. I couldn’t find a 19 but it meshed ok and no problems yet. Mounted in the 19t holes
on the viper don't you think maybe you should increase the spring rate bring it down some more I mean tighten it up so it doesn't bottom out in the slap in the back?
Yeah, seen others fit harder springs and oil in the rear with good success.

Hi sir, do you think or any idea if this part will hold and work well on wild dagger (tamiya 53791) DF-02 universal shaft. I’m thinking of installing it on front drive. Have you tried any of these universal cvd shaft on your WR-01 chasis cars and or other compatible chasis/drives...thanks!
I think they will fit, but I’m not sure though. But if I remember correctly it’s the same length (and they use the same 1150 bearings on the wheels axles). But no, I haven’t tried it myself.

Planning to gift my son his first kit building up by himself. Whats the runtime with nimh - let's say 3600mah - with stock motor? PS: Great videos!
Hi Michael! Good idea! Did the same with my son. Uhh, run time is always too difficult. Depends on surface, how you are running it, battery condition etc. But 3600 mah will give you plenty of run time. 20 min? 40 min?

@@michaelschmid6430 Yeah, better keep the youngsters away from LiPos. Got the same system with my son. He only runs with NiMH and Li-Ion. Yeah, the DT-03 is the same blood-line as the Grasshopper.
Sorry last one front shock tower on the dt02 is it’s most vulnerable part a carbon or alloy front shock tower brace is essential on the 02s especially if your running them hard or racing them

You must to try put on a wltoys 12428 540 motor, 8€ and make your tamiya fly! More punch! And more speed anda power!! In my tt02 rally i used one, and is really amazing

Do you know the difference between the "sport tuned" and the "torque tuned" Tamiya motors? Do they require you to go to a 19 tooth pinion?
Hi Magnus. The sport tuned is a 23T and the torque tuned a 25T. The sport tuned has higher rpm but lower torque. No one of them requires a 17T or 19T pinion. Larger pinion = Higher gear ratio, higher top speed. Lower acceleration/torque (compare it to your car or bicycle, and the difference between 2nd and 3rd gear etc).
So if you want a lot of top speed go with a sport tuned and the 19T pinion. If you want torque and good off road acceleration go with the torque tuned and a 17T pinion. Or mix them how you prefer it ☺️

Depending on the particular dto2 and dto3 I would want to put different types of brushless motors on them technically I'd want the DT 03 faster over the DT 02 meaning I would want to have the dto3 with always the faster motors than the dt02.

@@NordicRC because to me the DT of three is an upper level kit to the dt02 unless you go for the trf ones which they need to make for the dt03.
I have 2 7.2v ni-mh batteries each rated at 5000mah. Would those work on the dt02 and dt03?
The largest I’ve had in the DT-02 is a 4600 mah, but that one fits. And plenty of room in the DT-03.

You know 550s can fit on grasshoppers as far as a motor concerned so I bet you could fit a 550 brushed on the dto2s and dto3s and the 550 will also fit the DT 01.
Yeah, a 550 can fit wherever there is room enough. Not sure what the benefit would be with such a light little 2WD. Even though it’s bigger than a 540 it’s not necessarily faster (increasing the size just means more torque and the 540 provides plenty of torque for the 02/03 I think, in my humble personal opinion).

Believe it or not the GT tune is 25 turning it's faster than the sport 2 and 23 turn I think cuz there's five degrees of timing on the 25 turn GT tuned and I want to say the dirt tuned is faster it has like 10 degrees of timing with a 27 turn one runs 19,000 and the other one runs 17,000 RPM I think the sport tunes are around 16,000or 16,500 RPM.
Got some GT tuned but they doesn’t seem much faster than the Sport Tuned, but it’s just to compare the specs. A Sport Tuned got 18.300 RPM
@@NordicRC I actually went on a look on to my base which is a website for their motors and the support tune is actually slower it's actually slower than my dirt tuned in the GT tuned has 19,000 RPM also the ugt is 19,400.

I use both. NiMHs are safe for youngsters and doesn't need storage charging.

Life is much lower voltage. And while Li-Ion holds the voltage better than a NiMH they still require safety precautions (while discharging and charging). And they haven’t got much ‘punch’ compared to a LiPo.
