Yes this is the best comment on the topic. I’m glad someone has the guts to speak the truth about this ridiculous show and how this “Dr.” Phil uses peoples suffering for entertainment. It’s like an old time freak show he is profiting off of vulnerable people even children sometimes! It’s disgusting and morally, ethically wrong. Why is it so hard for us as a society to have empathy that motivates us to help people instead of hurt them more. Dr Phil has such a huge influence on so many people that look up to him, he could choose to use that opportunity to help implement real change. It’s sad and frustrating. I believe he is a great big bully.

@@belle69ish I hope that you have many supportive and loving people around you! Don't worry too much about this life, it is short. I have learned not to allow people to label me. I do not have mental issues, but I have had people try to label me and shove me into the box of what they think I should be and how I should act and if I did not fit their definition of what is "right" I was treated differently. I imagine this happens to many. Love yourself, it is the best anecdote for this situation.

A few years ago, during an extremely stressful time in her life, my Mom became very ill and was diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder with Psychotic Features. Basically, she became paranoid to the point that she was no longer living in reality. Every thought, conversation, sound, person, song on the radio, etc somehow became "proof" of what she believed. She became an entirely different person - confrontational, irrationally angry, dangerously aggressive (because she thought someone was trying to kill her). It was horrible and terrifying and ended with her having to be forcefully hospitalized. It was devastating. Fortunately, while hospitalized, they found the right medications and she slowly became my Mom again. She's fine now, but it was a very long, difficult road.
All this to say, if someone had put her on television and exploited her while she was under the influence of this mental illness and at the lowest, most terrifying point in her life, I would be BEYOND furious. Unethical doesn't even begin to cover it. I've seen so many "patients" that were clearly not in a healthy enough state of mind to truly consent to his show. To make a spectacle of someone who is ill and openly ridicule them in front of the entire world (while encouraging a live studio audience to follow his lead) is reprehensible. Its not about medicine or education or treatment, it's about drama and ratings and I can't stand it.

Phil's tendency to bully, even when a guest makes a perfectly insightful comment is telling. It appears that he believes that he must be the "expert" and I've seen him get very angry at times, when guests put in their own 2 cents. I've also noticed in the past few years how it seems like the show is dedicated to him hyping his son's book co., or doctor on demand, Robin's skin care etc. I've really lost a lot respect which I was initially very prepared to give.

I'll never forget a Dr. Phil show where a teen/young woman was visibly angry, to the point of tears, because of her father's treatment of her. She gave as an example how her father would make donkey noises at her. Dr. Phil dismissed this and pretty much told the young woman to stop complaining over something so silly and get over it. This stuck with me I think because I had an abusive dad and if I were to share just one thing he'd do to upset me it may not be clear that he had a pattern of abusive behavior. That one thing, in isolation, might come off as "not a big deal." Also, the bigger question here, I thought, is why is this 50-year-old man making donkey noises anyway?? It pissed me off that Dr. Phil would basically defend that man.

Thanks for this fair critique. My wife and I frequently watched the Dr. Phil show--until we appeared as his guests in 2017. He claims it is a "safe place to talk about difficult subjects." Ours was certainly a difficult subject, but after our episode aired we received some credible death threats, in addition to the on-line threats in the comment section. We were thoroughly investigated by the authorities again. They found no evidence of any crime but it was a traumatic experience. We were immediately banished from our churches and told we would be arrested if we attended church. My wife has especially suffered and is quite angry at Dr. Phil. I look at the good points he made about the subject and the positive things that have happened as a result of appearing on his show. He did provide me with ten sessions of counseling through Dr. on Demand. Thank-you.

And Jerry Springer? He was merely a person who was trying to be professional, do his job, get the job done well, and didn't put on any "airs". He was himself; he didn't feel a need to try and convince his "guests" or those watching at home that he had all the answers and was always right no matter what. Life involving people was basically a 3-Ring circus, while he was in charge, he tried to keep things in check, but didn't try to control people, their answers, etc. Phil McGraw is VERY much about controlling the narrative, the responses from his "guests" etc. Honestly, I have no idea how his wife, Robin, has managed to live with him for so many years.

I just want to personally thank you for this. I was literally crying by the end haha especially when you said that mental health clinicians have a deep respect for people that suffer from mental health issues and that you guys want to protect them. I'm 23 and have never been able to afford a therapist, and the only time I had any type of counseling was when I was 8 and it was provided by the state thru a court mandate due to something I had gone thru but I ended up stopping within a month. But people like Dr.Phil made me scared of going to a therapist, truly. I figured it would just be an emotional beat down session. I thought every mental health person viewed it the same way he did. I refuse to watch his stuff just for the simple fact I could see myself in every single one of the guests on his show, in one way or another. Just no compassion or empathy, which I think to really know why a person is the way they are you have to at least care enough to figure out their past/family structure/ outside influences etc. Cause i know i wouldn't be the train wreck I am today if it wasn't for what Ive been thru thru out my life. So thank you for this. Truly. You are the type of person that deserves and needs to be helping people. I try not to judge Dr Phil, because its almost the paradox question of whether he's that way because he has that platform or if he has that platform because he is that way and i truly don't know that answer so i shouldn't judge him.and like you said, he doesn't know anything special when it comes to mental health. just very distasteful to take advantage of someone vulnerable like his guests, just to make a mockery of on his show just for ratings and views. I think he damages the mental health community more than he helps and play into the stigma "well this is your fault you are like this" which i can understand to an extent but if every single person viewed it that way we wouldn't get anywhere in terms of mental health. okay done ranting. thank you so much for this.

I agree with the review that he often seems to make fun and ridiculize the guests problems, which doesn't seem helpful to me at all. Then the audience claps at him making fun of the guests problems. I feel bad for the guests at times, even if they have errors in their reasoning or other problems, his approach to help them seems more aimed at getting laughs from the audience or making 'smart' remarks than anything else. It feels like his shows are much more entertainment oriented than would be appropriate for the type of content.

Yes, although it is not the living on people's problems that bothers me, but the show-business way it is done, and how he, arbitrarily it often seems, judges, evaluates and dismisses. F ex an entitled girl who was asked to leave: Why didn't he treat her according to his profession , helping her to see her attitude? ...oh, now I see !(maybe?) : it would take too long, not fit in the narrow limits of the show, with all its pauses and entertainment style. Surely with all the home-work he does in preparation of the shows, he knew what she was like? Could he not have prepared her a bit and had her see her mistake on the show? Wouldn't that be positive and healing to watch? it is the new world, to worsen the human, to make it bad.
I have not seen that many shows, but the one about men's infidelity was strange: The 4 men on stage had little of substance to tell and say, - it was women in the audience who gave interesting and important input! Could he not have either got more verbal, conscious men to the program, or prepared these. A waste of time to watch. He has written good books though.

I haven't seen his show, but daytime talk shows make me think of how a lot of parents pull out of family counseling because a therapist dared to imply that the kids weren't 100% of the problem. The "solution" for a parent like that might be to drag their kids onto a tv set so they can get humiliated on national tv. I think a lot of people, especially parents, have reason to assume someone like beloved tv personality Dr. Phil would be on their side even when real therapists are more critical.

I watched the "Dr." Phil Show years ago when he started his own show and found his so-called professional advice mainly based on the Twelve Step Program. So, it was no surprise to me when I later discovered that his father was an alcoholic and I assume he gained a lot of knowledge from the simple, yet the very effective program of AA. The cold, almost ice-cold expression in his eyes while listening to his guests on stage, to me shows no empathy or compassion for the guests sitting in front of him, and it seems to me that he exploits people for his own personal gain. I cannot stand Robyn when she's entering with him to get her moment of fame. My deepest concerns are with those suffering from psychosis whom Dr. Phil has positioned as a source of humor for his audiences. I use humor at work but not at the expense of a patient. There is nothing funny about this condition, which in and of itself can be traumatic. His ability to have a television show connotes authority and status. This concerns me. I find Dr. Phil likable as a person, but it is clear that his aim is to make money. This was demonstrated by his "jump on the bandwagon" endorsement for certain nutrition bars. There is no magic solution to any problem. I fear people get sucked in by drama and authoritarianism.

I agree. He uses the audience to laugh at his guests then says he can't control the audience to his guests. However if there is something high profile he asks his audience to respect the guest or has no audience at all. As a child I was humiliated by a preacher on stage regularly. This kind of humiliation is something no one ever forgets and if they have a disorder it is pure abuse.

There have been way more problems than that on his show, a lot of them show itself is really problematic, the show continuously takes advantage of people and their problems, often maximising them to the fullest, it lives off of peoples problems and many times overdramatises them and blow them out of proportion, there have been plenty of instances where they don't deal with people's problems seriously and give them the actual compassion and kindness they deserve, Dr Phil, his team and his audience frankly will even go as far as overlooking, shaming and humiliating guests, to glorify Doctor Phil with his wrong approach, many times laughing and scorning at people making them feel more humiliated and disgraced, they blast out people's private lives and insecurities to the world. Instead of giving people a comfortable, confidential and non judgemental area to speak. Dr Phil is literally an entertainment show. The Doctor Phil Show does give help and compassion to some people like Lauren Kavanaugh I suppose, but doesn't hand out an equal amount of support to everyone.

I'm quite sure the producers tell the guests before that Phil will have to be a little pushy, forceful or rude for the simple sake of the show's entertainment value, much like Jerry Springer. As well, I doubt they aren't coached to 'act out' with immunity. If Dr. Phil acted too much like a real, caring psychotherapist the show would have gotten cancelled long ago. I believe its ok to push a few guests' triggers if its going to introduce a million people (women mostly) to the concept of therapy. If Dr. Phil was on TV when she was a young woman perhaps my mother would have gotten help...but for her generation the notion of psychotherapy was shamed.

I'm so glad you did this video. I have watched how he has bullied, humiliated, and shut people down. I remember watching a clip in which he kept making the husband seem like the bad guy because he was with another woman. Although it was wrong, what got completely glossed over was the fact that his wife had actually left him, cheated on him, and then wanted him back. This particular truth was being stifled by Dr. Shame's overbearing nature that kept suppressing the husband's flow of conversation. Even after he squeaked out this truth, Dr. Phil ignored it and kept his diatribe going. Not one person seemed to have caught on to this fact. To me, this show is toxic and makes a mockery out of the noble profession of counseling.

Enjoyable commentary. I tend to agree and most people I know think of the Dr. Phil Show as entertainment. I also know that it has caused many to seek mental health services because the show somehow resonated with them. Seeing mental health issues or dysfunction in relationships does create more acceptance and 'mainstream' ideas on care, similar to what we have toward dentistry. Just as with some media 'entertainers' it would not hurt for the program to run a disclaimer banner (like pharmacy ads) and the # for services available.

Yes, Dr Phil's body language is unfriendly, intimidating and like that of a domineering person.. esp. the way he looks at others. It gives away his not-so-holy intentions,.. his self-importance, and lack of genuine empathy and kindness. I saw him on oprah Winfrey shows some 20 years ago in 2000 and never liked him.. I had this feeling that he is not genuine and a kind doctor mainly because of his body language.. but since I was young at that time, I thought it was just me... I could be wrong in my judgment. But I just didn't like him and i knew his approach and words were damaging in some way to the other person's being interviewed on the show. He shined at their expense. Now, I know, my negative feelings about him were So right! the last time I saw him on TV was 2000..!... never saw him again.

I know this episode was posted several months ago, but I just wanted to add to Dr Grande's point in regards to his attempts to coercing guests on his show.
I'M NOT A PROFESSIONAL IN ANY WAY...this is just an observation of mine.
First, my opinion: I don't hate Dr Phil, persay...but I don't like how the structure of the show has changed over the years. I definitely think early on, when he was a guest on Oprah's show, and with the first couple of books he had done, as well the early days of his TV show, I think he was genuine with wanting to help people, cover important topics and bringing some insight to mental health issues. He was 'no nonsense' but in a relatable, hometown, no bs kind of way. He was, at most, a bit brash...but I do think he was insightful and motivational as well as being entertaining. However, it seemed the more popular he became, the more arrogant and bullying he became...and his show has now really become more entertainment and for shock value. Which is sad.
Ok, so back to my ideas in regards, specifically, to his bullying and manipulation he uses for confessions and/or spurring reactions from guests:
    1) Dr Phil genuinely acts more like a detective/interrogator than a mental health professional...so when Dr Grande used the term 'coercing' I think it was a perfect descriptor.
    2) I think it's dangerous for those who suffer from genuine mental health conditions to be on his show, because besides the reason that Dr Grande provided, it's entirely possible that, depending what the condition/situation is, being in front of a live audience, having cameras all around, and having someone as intimidating as Dr Phil asking questions and just the overall pressure of that situation, they may give false info, or agree with something Dr Phil said even if it isn't true...or feel too intimidated to speak freely and openly...which I think most of the time nullifies any good that might have been possible from being on the show in the first place...or make that person, or others who might be watching and relatrs somewhat to the guests on his show, in an even worse state.
There have been so, so many instances in criminal justice where false confessions have been given from those who suffer from many different mental issues...or even from just the stress and nervousness- especially when dealing with imposing figures, such as cops...or Dr Phil. They get hit with a barrage of questions, they use intimidating techniques...manipulation...all things you see often on Dr Phil's show. Not always, or not to the same degree...but I still find the correlation there compelling.

I think it's fair to say if anyone has to resort to going on a TV show for help, the whole thing is messed up and Dr Phil obviously cannot provide long term remedies on a 30/45/1hr show. Ratings, fame, money, power. I think he sleeps comfortably in that area. @R Horn Oh i am not disputing that.
