- The AKI Corporation were once known for delivering the greatest wrestling games of all time. For those of us here in the US, those games all came under one banner: World Championship Wrestling. The video games of WCW were simply a cut above those of their main competitor, the World Wrestling Federation, and that's putting it nicely. Many fans wondered what might happen if AKI had, like so many people in the field of entertainment they covered, had jumped ship. What might WCW/nWo Revenge look like if it were a WWF game instead?
Well, in 1999, we got our answer. AKI and THQ moved away from the brand that gave us Nitro and Thunder, to instead join forces with the home of RAW and SmackDown. This installment of Triangle X Squared O: The Wrestling Game Retrospective Series covers the creation, reception and overall legacy... of WWF WrestleMania 2000.

What worked for me in the Road to Wrestlemania mode when the difficulty spikes happened was to make sure if I was using a CAW, to make sure it had the longest reach jumping off the top rope and also give him the move that eventually would be known as Whisper in the Wind, somehow spamming that attack when things got difficult worked for me
Is it cheesing it? Yeah, but with how tough the latter stage of RTWM can be, it was worth it to me XD, still, this is an amazing game, equal to No Mercy and Virtual Pro Wrestling 2 to me

Lol I use to buy the CDs that had the wrestlers theme music on it. Pretty sure they knew kids would buy those specifically for that. I meen what adult bought them to bump Nation of Domination or the Rocks theme while driving etc.

I always liked how WM 2000 had full entrances instead of the cropped ones No Mercy had. Also it had Big Show on the roster and Undertaker didn't just use the Raw is War theme.
Also that music in Edit mode, my god those flutes are so nostalgic for me at this point.
It reminds me of the theme song from "Home Improvement".
Well the whole Undertaker/Raw is war theme situation was pretty much only due to copyright issues.
Besides, there was a custom caw theme that was pretty much an instrumental version of American Badass by Kid Rock that I immediately changed his theme to when I found out about it 🤣

@@Dee1nOnly92 Well, one of the generic themes from No Mercy was my pick for the Undertaker. This one, "ORIGINAL4", started off with a spooky church bell like his real theme, but then goes off onto some funk-metal-disco-whatever thing that has no relation, ahah.. But you're right, the Hollys theme does have a very 'Rollin'' vibe to it.

This was my first wrestling game and my introduction to WWF. My friend brought it over and despite knowing nothing about wrestling I was having a lot of fun with the game. The game play was fun, the characters were cool, watching them come out to cool music and "live action" footage was surprising. After playing the game for about 2 months my friend told me I need to start watching wrestling and that Thursday I watched my first Smackdown and was hooked. Since I spent 2 months just playing the game and getting the know the WWF superstars that way it made watching WWF on TV feel like it was the movie adaptation of the game lol. From that point on I was hooked.

The match lengths in the championship mode are insane. My favorite I saw was Al Snow vs Road Dogg in a 65 minute classic in the middle of a Raw card.

I actually agree with you. Honestly, I feel like Wrestlemania2000 is underrated and goes under the radio compared to NoMercy. Although No Mercy was a better game, I personally liked WM2000 over it for some reason. 1999 I was 9 years old and this was the best Christmas ever.

I remember getting a copy of this at a flea market when I was like eight years old and EVERY SINGLE MEMBER of the roster was bald and set to 500lbs.

Good lord. I actually suggested that one. And the main canonical plot of the story mode which is seen from the prospective of the lead heroine and poster girl Reiko Hinamoto is so bonkers, so nonsensical it makes most of the storylines seen in current WWE or pro wrestling storylines written by Vince Russo in general look sane and understandable.
Rumble Roses XX sucked, OK it was Xbox exclusive (down with the Ponies!) but it still sucked.
@richallenxbox1976 Rumble Roses 1 also only had two wrestlers maximum. Given that it was built off of HCTP, that was disappointing to say the least.
I did the same thing with the entrance music sometimes I'd just sit there and listen to them this was before I had the music volumes and of course youtube didn't exist
I feel like Wrestlemania 2000 is what we needed it to be, it was a stopgap before No Mercy in a lot of ways like SmackDown was a stopgap for SmackDown 2.
It’s solid, it’s a wrestling game, it’s Revenge with a WWF paint job, SmackDown was a basic game too, but if you look at what followed it is very easy to see these guys had their fingers on the pulse of wrestling, they understood what fans wanted. I remember shitting myself when we could go backstage in these games.

One of my favorite videos you’ve ever released. I played WrestleMania 2000 more than No Mercy and Revenge. It’s honestly my favorite of all the N64 titles. It really is slept on compared to those other two. Keep up the awesome work Ian!
Wrestlemania 2000 also has the Road Warriors face paints, but just mirrored. I learned this from BeBetterGamer's CAW vids, I think. There's some Goldust taunts in there, too. All these people basically just left WWF around the time of this game.
Also British Bulldog's face, thighs and boots from revenge are in the game as well, i wonder if he was meant to be on the game at some point but eventually they run of time to properly add him.
@@DBoy38 I'm not sure. I don't think he made the jump back to WWE yet, but it certainly is a welcome edition. I wish they carried it over to No Mercy, since he was in a a cuffed jeans an gray hoodie phase for some odd reason. The guy with some of the most beautiful trunks and tights. I wonder if it had to do with the leg injury and stepping on that trap door in "The WCW."

I think I saw him attacking the Rock in tights in his tron) Makes sense for AKI to port those over from Revenge (or just not remove them, not sure exactly how that process worked, but I would love a documentary with all the devs while they're still kickin)Didn't know that about him fitting in. @@616Entertainment As a matter of fact, after I finished this video, I turned on my N64 and did what I always did as a kid; turned on Kane and The Undertaker's theme songs and jammed out to them. You were right on, having the actual theme songs was a HUGE deal back in the day, and really helped this game feel as cool as it did

I can totally relate. WM2K isn't my first wrestling game but was the first one I remember making a wrestler in my likeness and fully immersed myself into the game.
Best ring entrances in my opinion. When they first showed a video clip of this game we all went nuts. Revenge and WM2K were the best games back in the Attitude Era.
I probably put 500 hours into this game back in 1999 and 2000. I don't think I'd ever loved an N64 game as much (at least until WWF No Mercy came out). I remember dunking on all the PS1 fanboys at the time. "I got Star Wars Rogue Squadron, Zelda OoT, Zelda MM and WWF WrestleMania 2000! What do you got?!" They would probably answer "Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy VII - IX, Resident Evil 1-3, Spyro 1-3 and Tekken 1-3!" I would nervously say "I still got the best Star Wars and wrestling games!"
In hindsight, those AKI wrestling games really saved the N64's butt because when it came to fighting games, PS1 was the undisputed king. N64 games came slow and far between and costed way more than PS1 games. So quality wise, they HAD to be better than PS1 games. If it wasn't for the AKI games, N64 would have ended up like the Sega Saturn - mostly forgotten.
Shortly after this came out, the very first Smackdown game released on PS1 and the PS1 fanboys started trying to claim that they finally had the better wrestling game... nope... still nope... the best PS1 ever got was WCW vs the World and that's like the worst of the AKI games (still fun though).
I can't agree entirely, I was very happy to have SmackDown! and SmackDown! 2, even if the AKI games are just as good or better, but having a PS1 was great. Resident Evil, Twisted Metal, Crash Bandicoot, Syphon Filter, it was great!
The last game appearance for Droz. Before the unfortunate accident. Although he was mentioned in 2k17 and 2k18. When you go to the jukebox and go to Albert.you'll find that his theme is called Droz even tho it's actual name is pierced. And also Owen Hart was supposed to be in the game but we all know the reasons why he wasn't in it. And the last wwe game appearance of Jeff Jarrett.
I’ve always been the outcast because I prefer 2000 over No Mercy. No Mercy just seems off to me. They sped up the gameplay too much IMO, way too much chest out blocking on everything. It just seemed off. I liked the addition of ladders and what have you, but overall, Wrestlemania2000 was better IMO. Hell, I’ll even go one more degree of getting flamed, I would take Revenge over 2000. Not trolling either. Just my preference. Perry Saturn in Revenge was the Tits. Not to mention all the incarnations of the diamond cutter. Crazy!
Wrestlemania 2000 was one of the first N64 games I ever played when I was younger I barely got away with playing Conker's Bad Fur Day 😂 back then I love this game

7:22 D-Lo Brown's head game is on point LOL... Maaaaan! What a time to be alive when this game came out along with the previous THQ games. The good years when no one was complaining or caring about the graphics. We were just having fun playing an awesome wrestling game for hours.

This game to me is tied with no mercy. It also marks and interesting point in the Monday night war. WCW wasn't all that great in 1999 to be honest and for the WWF to get AKI to switch with them was a brilliant move. All 4 AKI N64 Wrestling games were fantastic I still play them to this day. I actually remember playing the Gameboy version as well. It's not great but it's not bad either. It's perfect for a long car ride that's about it hahaha.

To be far, SmackDown! had been on the air for months by the time of this game's release, but I never held that against the game. I enjoyed WM2000, but it was very dated by early 2000. Half of that roster was gone or had their gimmicks changed. I jumped ship to SD! on the PS1, but once No Mercy dropped, that's all I played
It was a good era to be able to go back and forth, that's for sure.

WM2000 Probably also had to work with the fact that PS1 & The Newly released Dreamcast was the main problem just too much Competition… But what struct me most is when you said WWF Smackdown didn’t exist yet. Now the Gamer in me would have said the Game. Then I’m like ooooh he means the show. Ah man those were the times before the Burn It To The Ground Theme! Still one of my favorite Themes next to the Beautiful People theme for Smackdown oh and the one that goes And I Won’t Be Denied! 😂
I remember cactus Jack being so hard and me being such a brat that when he started to beat me I would scream at the top of my lungs. My mom and stepdad grounded me for it lol
Funny story about this game, Copies were sold out everywhere and I had to wait weeks before I could find a copy...After calling a Walmart in a town about an hour away I forced my dad to drive me down there because the lady on the phone said they got plenty of copies of Wrestlemania 2000 that day. Well to my complete and utter dismay when I arrived I came to find out this lady's lack of experience in the electronics department as it was THE FUCKING GBC VERSION. So so disappointed and my dad was pissed. Luckily about 3 weeks later I secured my copy and me and my cousin had a blast for months, those long entrances were sorely missed from No Mercy.
Oh man ... I had the chance to buy this as a kid.
Instead I picked "Warzone", because it had a better score in some stupid game magazine! -,-
So instead of having fun with Wrestlemania 2000 I wasted my whole summer of 2000 by playing Acclaim's piece of garbage!

As a PS1 kid growing up, I never felt like I was missing out on much not owning an N64. That was until the day my monthly EGM subscription arrived in the mail that included a preview for WM2000, exclusively for the console I did not own. I flipped to the page with the preview for WM2000 and there it was, beckoning to me, a glorious screenshot of Austin making his entrance to the ring with his TITANTRON VIDEO PLAYING FRONT AND CENTER BEHIND HIM as he did his signature walk to the ring.
I was immediately green with envy over my friends who owned an N64. That one screenshot was the single coolest damn thing I had ever seen. Not even Attitude for the ps1 had Titantron videos playing during entrances, you know, the system that was perfectly capable of implementing such a feature.
Loved the video Iann, as always, I've been waitn on this. Btw the part where you said you would keep the themes playing on HCTP while you played with your action figures, was some wholesome stuff!! For all the fans of these AKI games, AEW is bringing back the engine if you didn't know. Got the producer from No Mercy and a few others from the original AKI team that now work with Yukes. So damn hype for that game

When I got my current copy of this game a few years ago to replace my big brother's og one that got lost, I was shocked to find that the previous owner had increased x-pac's height and weight to the max settings!

I got this for Christmas in 1999. Back when N64 games were $90 CAD. Loads of great memories :) But that cage was too tall!

WM2000 was always my personal favorite of the N64 AKI games so thanks for this. I think this was the first wrestling game to have a full blown CAW mode where you can edit every single move. My friends and I would spend hours making characters.
It's about damn time Wrestlemania 2000 got some love. Of course No Mercy was the pinnacle of the wrestling games back then, but 2000 was one hell of a road to get there.

No Mercy will get its own episode. WM 2000 is often overlooked, and stuffing No Mercy into the same episode would once again be dropping it in NM’s shadow. Can’t do it! Lol
The fact that WrestleMania 2000 and No Mercy are still the best wrestling games even in 2021, that's an amazing feat. And sad at the same time, because you'd think that with the technology now, we'd get amazing looking graphics and gameplay that should surpass these two classics, right? But we don't.
I don't think they're the absolutely best, I'd take SYM or HCTP over them, bu they're way, way up there for sure.
Wrestlemania 2000 doesn’t get the credit it deserves for being a good game. It was overshadowed by No Mercy’s success. By the way, you and I are the same age and I did the samething with my action figures and the in game entrance music. No Mercy was a great game. But for me WM2000 is the best of the two.
WM2000 was one of those life changing games for me. I liked Revenge and World Tour, but as a WWF guy I played Attitude more often than not. Once Wrestlemania hit, I never played Attitude again haha.
I actually did notice the warmer color tone to the game, I didn’t ever know how to describe it but it did look different than anything before or since. I didn’t mind it, for some reason it made it feel more Indy haha.
As it stands, WM2000 is a great game that led to an even greater one in No Mercy. No idea when the last time I played this was, but this video was a great throwback.
This is the AKI game I have the most fondness for, I got Revenge much later, after No Mercy. I still have my cart and pretty sure it still has my edits where I had changed all of the roster to my class year, that's one thing I really loved about this is that you could change nearly everything on the roster and it changed the intro to it. Good stuff, and Kane's theme sounds so eerie on this game with the compression and distortion. I also think the AKI games had the best move animations.

Dude I watched this with a tear in my eye. The memories I've had with these AKI games where truly the best times ever in my childhood and you just brought them all up brother👍My dad bought me this game in a flea market after I convinced him that I would be better son hahaha I owe that man everything cause he worked his ass off for me to have these memories available. Before No Mercy I challenged my cousin and neighbors to a match everytime they came over that Summer.

You sound just like me…a WCW & a PS1 kid….I remember seeing Wrestlemania 2000 before Smackdown for PS1 got released, in Video Stores wishing I had a N64 to play it…such nostalgia. Great video.
I loved the crap out of this game but I could never escape the cage. It was outright impossible for me and when I watched an AI match the AI couldn't escape it either. I don't if I was doing something wrong or if there was something wrong with my cartridge

Bro those GBC games LOOK hilarious. I bet Mayhem's was the shits, too. No Mercy was supposed to get a GBC game by AKI which was given to another dev and got canceled IIRC. NewLegacyInc play the mode (I think you can get it off a gameshark) basically you play through 7 chapters and if you win your CAW from GBC gets saved on No Mercy, but the mode is full of crazy dialogue. It has Angle talking about the 3 I's, Taka calling Stephanie McMahon a slag, a bunch of typos, a little "Gratuitous English" (as TV Tropes calls it,) and a couple promo animations that I don't think were used in the main game (LIke think of the shrugging and stuff they sometimes do in story.)
The music used when creating a character has always been one of my favorite video game music
I loved Wrestlemania 2000 better than No Mercy. Only thing i hated was i never could do the Peoples Elbow with the Rock. Shit was complicated to me lol
Here's something I just noticed, neither Wrestlemania 2000 or No Mercy feature Stone Cold on the box cover, but both have The Rock and Triple H.
I still own a copy of WM2K and I still firmly believe that its still one of the best wrestling games of all time....side note....Owen Hart was originally supposed to be in wm2k...but they removed after he passed away
Never owned Revenge as a kid, only rented it but absolutely loved it. Owned World Tour which was great but felt really dated and just wasn't the same in 2000. Then my friend brought over his copy of Wrestlemania 2000 and for whatever reason we didn't play it. I remember thinking it'll probably just be like Attitude again and dismissed it. Wasn't till like 15 years later I saw footage of No Mercy and my jaw dropped. I had no idea WWF AKI games existed. All the wasted years.

Dude no joke i bought a used copy of this. Yeah i had to wipe the entire cartridge because i had planned to stream it. But let's just say there were some inappropriate names for some of the superstars.

Virtual pro Wrestling 64 (the definitive version of world tour but only released in japan. But it has so much more content than world tour it's crazy ! )
Wwf no mercy
Wrestlemania 2000
Virtual pro Wrestling 2 (Also released in japan. And in my opinion. It's the greatest wrestling game besides fire pro wrestling returns.)

There's one major flaw with these AKI games.. NO GOLDUST! Dustin Rhodes was always on the opposite brand at the wrong time. It's so tragic, he's my boy!
WWF WrestleMania 2000 - AKA the underrated gem of N64 games that got eclipsed by WWF No Mercy in the US and Virtual Pro Wrestling 2 in Japan. Also, WWF WrestleMania 2000 was sold in both US and Japan while WWF No Mercy was only a US exclusive. Japan had to wait for their exclusive sequel which was Virtual Pro Wrestling 2.

Arguably my fave N64 wrestling game. I remember this at many sleepovers at my cousins house. I spammed use of Stone Cold a lot. Or would create a superstar and put the DX jersey on him in different colors. So much nostalgia. I absolutely enjoyed this retrospective.
Awesome video! For the Championship Belts I don't want, I just win by count out lol. Works for them all but the hardcore belt. It also speeds up Tag Matches lol.
