- WWF No Mercy is often regarded as the single greatest professional wrestling video game of all time. It's the pinnacle of AKI Corporation's prime, it's the perfect snapshot of the WWF's Attitude Era, and it's the star of many of our favorite, most important childhood memories. With a roster comprised of Stone Cold Steve Austin, Shawn Michaels, The Rock, Kane, Undertaker, The Hardy Boyz, Edge and Christian, Mankind, Trish Stratus, Lita and more, it really doesn't get much better than this. If you owned a Nintendo 64, WWF No Mercy was a must have for your collection. If you were a PlayStation kid like I was, you were excited to head over to an N64 friend's house, because you knew you'd get to play No Mercy. This retrospective has been a long, LONG time coming, and I promise, it won't let you down. Let's get to it!

Another feature that No Mercy had that WM2000 did not have was the ability to drop weapons and not have them disappear. Weapons would stay on the ground to be used later.

I had been homeless for nearly a year and finally found a home around the time this came out. This game was the first thing I spent any money on aside from the essentials. It's always going to have a special place in my heart.

You hit the nail right on the head with getting together with friends on the weekends, sleepovers, pizza, soda, chips, and the N64. Simpler fun times, brotha. No Mercy is one of my favorite wrestling games of all time.

I'm imagining a storyline where Javon has a rival youtube channel which eventually collides head on with 616 in an epic No Mercy Best of 7 Championship. Ian pulls off a monumental victory at Wrestlemania over Javon, finally securing the rights to Javon's Soul which Ian stores in a small matchbox resting on his bedside table.
Every night after Ian says good night to the beautiful Tara Darcy he leans over to the matchbox and quietly whispers...Damn.
Drifting off to slumber with a wry smile creeping across his face like the Moon outside his window.

@@LegendoftheAce1 Definitely the pinnacle of those Acclaim wrestling games during the PS1/N64 era... a vast improvement over "War Zone".
I have the Dreamcast version, and its definitely better than it gets credit for, as long as it's the disc version (sorry, N64).
The fighting system DOES kind of suck ass, though... MK type "dial-in" inputs for the myriad moves in a wrestling game simply don't work very well, in my opinion.
That said, there is a lot to like about the game... I still play it fairly often!
Will forever be one of the greatest wrestling games, Just a timeless classic.

Nope, it was long awaited.
I'm laughing because I had a similar story to "javon" but it was a CAW named Johnny that had the rock's $800 shirt, default gear and an afro. He was the world champ, made my CAW to be his tag partner and did a whole angle as I was creating the game world. Amazing memories.

The save wiping was brutal. I remember playing a good straight hour and a half in survival to unlock as many wrestlers as I could and I was so pleased (god I miss being 8). I turned the game on the next day and watched the opening cinematic, get into the game and it was reset. I damn near cried because I worked really hard to get a bunch of money for the Smackdown mall and unlock those wrestlers. All of it, gone. Imagine being a little kid doing that work and having something go “nah never mind lol”, just soul crushing.
Duuuuude heartbreaker.
As always, takes me right back to my childhood. 11 years old, just me and my mom, trying not to wake her up as I pedigreed my way through the world title story mode at 1am on a school night. Thank you Ian.

Words cannot describe how much this game means to me. When I played it for the first time back in 2018, it was honestly the greatest day of my life. The magical gameplay, the total freedom you have with everything, movement, customization, rules, everything, was incredible, and that overall vibe to it, was insane and it sucks that we cannot get this magic combined with the days of sleepovers with our friends, ever again. These were the days, and I would kill to go back and replay the PS2 with my friends anytime of the day. This video was truly a masterpiece, Ian, and I can’t thank you enough for your performance here. In my opinion, your best video up to date, and a fantastic return to my favorite series in your channel. I cannot wait for the next one, as SVR 2007 is my ALL time favorite wrestling game and I can’t wait to share with you my stories with it when we get there.😊

No mercy was one of the first wrestling games I played i have some awesome memories playing this with my friends making awesome ladder matches with our favourite wrestlers 😁
What a great way to start, right?
As for the Save Erasing glitch, I can tell you that it happened to me and my friends MANY times. It even happened mid-match! We all had our own CAWs, and during the entrance, one of our CAWs came out wearing only black underwear, pale skin, and had The Rock's face. And on top of that, the blank CAW didn't even have a walk animation. He was just in an idle pose, and glided into the ring. And there was no theme music. It was creepy. When the match started, the CAW was back to normal, but when the match was over, all of our CAWs and progress in the game had been deleted. So yes, the Save Erase glitch was common.

3 friends and I would have these epic matches for tag titles, hour long battles smack talk and having the times of our lives. Simpler times back then.

Everytime when I think of WWF No Mercy, I always think about the simple times when me and my brothers played the game for hours. One of my favorite things to do was making CAWs. My best work was a CAW for my older brother, Havoc. My own favorite that I made was high flying tall man named Colt

I had a first off the line copy that suffered the save wipe. It didn’t just wipe though, it totally corrupted. It replaced most character pictures with Andre the Giant, none of your story’s were playable, and all your CAWs were gone.
Man, outta control.

I remember getting this game as a present after graduating elementary school.. It was definitely dawn before I saw any sleep. Such an Incredible time for any WWE fan especially in the peak of the Attitude Era!

I like how you illustrate how this is better than SmackDown 1&2 (CPU wrestlers not selling shit, the crappy SD ladder matches, etc) but I did NOT care for No Mercy's cage match since you cannot jump off the top of the cage and that's the most important feature in a cage match to me. But yeah the "run the guy across the ring and throw them into the cage" move in NM was awesome.
Gives and takes on both of them, no doubt. Both are great.
I hope you can finally do the rest of the Smackdown Vs RAW series this year

@@dcarson89 It's not an app... it's an emulator. Which I suppose IS an application. M64plusFZ. Play all your favorite N64 games. You can even play with a bluetooth controller!
But uhh... not if you use an iPhone. First of all, they suck. 2nd, emulator apps aren't allowed in the Apple store. This only works on Android devices!
Yep We played this game for hours. Every Friday night me and my cousins would grab a controller get together for sleepover. I was born in 90 and was in the 4th or 5th grade too and every weekend was a blast. I was a N64 kid. Thanks for taking us down memory lane man.

Nostalgia is a major factor but I also have a lot more fun with the gameplay of the older games because they actually work as intended. These 2k games have incredible presentation but are full of bugs. These videos are dope
I remember picking up the game the week it came out, but it was only at a shop (Software Etc.) 30 miles across town. I didn't have a car or license yet, so I took a 90-minute bus ride there and back home to pick it up. It was still worth it, of course: Exhibition title defenses, champions coming out wearing belts, only added to the already excellent gameplay and story modes. The only downside other than the occasional game slowdowns during some matches were no entrances all the way to the ring.
Also, the legendary menu screen music stuck in our heads forever: Dig, dig, dig dig-diggety-dog!
I made a point to use the No Mercy soundtrack for this video to give it that special feel, absolutely.

Even though I feel that Virtual Pro Wrestling 2 is the better game overall, No Mercy is still an absolute "Slobberknocker" (I mean that as it's still a classic 🤣)

I wouldn't be surprised if AKI was kicking around the wwf backlash sequel idea but THQ was privy to that.
AKI didn't want to develop exclusively for Nintendo anymore. That's why their next game, WCW Mayhem 2, was also going to be for PlayStation. It became Def Jam Vendetta in the long run, and it's still good!

I feel sad again about AKI. I didn't grow up playing No Mercy but them just stepping aside and not continuing on is bittersweet. Seeing that screenshot of "Backlash" I could easily see the graphics getting better and the gameplay continuing into being like Def Jam or Day of Reckoning on Gamecube. I love DoR but I don't know how much people consider that a true successor in terms of gameplay. And I certainly think that the gameplay got worse after that (while I did like SvR06 as well). It reminds me of the woman who worked on the JB Harold games going totally away from mystery/detective games after her company didn't get what they wanted out of it. They went towards mobile games and didn't find success, but if I remember right she is still in that sphere today. You almost wish they could get one more shot at it with technology being what it is today but no sense holding on to the past right (not like I don't do it every day😅)
Backlash isn't/wasn't real! Fake internet nonsense. But yea, AKI was supposed to do WCW Mayhem 2 on PS2. That would've been incredible. Sadly, it was not to be.
The save wipe glitch was a very real problem for me, I even had a little blue notebook that I wrote in all my preferred character edits, so I could recreate them any time the game reset, e.g. unmasking Kane; shaving Kurt Angle's head; instead of "Devon" and "Buh Buh Ray" (which I always thought were really stupid) changing them to "D-Von" and "Bubba Ray"; skin-colour ring attire for the Divas; you know, the usual things!

My Friends and I use to play Revenge/WM2000 & No Mercy legit and we also use to have a blast Choreographing our matches and calling our spots............. also I disagree, I have 2K22 and and some other more recent games and I still play the Aki games wayyyyyyyy more, still fun AF yo

I have one of these cartridges with a save game erasing failure. And yes, that really sucks. Fortunately I didn't bought it in my youth. Meanwhile I own the game twice. And fortunately the other one doesn't have that problem. Still my favorite N64 game! 🍻

Worst part is playing Championship Mode with your created wrestler only to have him turn into Mr. Default randomly. Luckily, I had a memory card with all of our wrestlers intact.

Love Wrestling Games Rewind. I bought a month of AdFreeShows just to listen to it. Some of my questions made it to the Insiders Edge Podcast my buddy Jack was one of the host! I wish Sanders Keel was the face of the AEW Fight Forever project. He's dope as hell and sorely needed after the lost Bryan Williams to 2K about 9 months ago.
It was a fun show to be on. I didn't feel like it was promoted well by AdFreeShows and I fought for them to release at least one episode for free, just to show people what they'd be getting upon signing up. I don't know if anyone ever listened, lol.

I remember spending an entire summer playing this game with my best friend Alex and we would always go back stage for a custom game mode we created. As soon as we got backstage we would set a 15 minute timer on his wristwatch and whoever forced more stage transitions at the end of that 15 minutes would be considered the winner!!!

This game has a special place in my collection. The summer before the 9th grade an electrical fire started in my room due to faulty wiring. It destroyed everything but I went back in the next day to find the N64 half melted with No Mercy in it. I pulled the game out and it's only melted in the corner and still works to this day!! It's crazy how that happened but it's true.

The strange picture with afro, the Jukebox, the blue glowing lava lamp looking thing and that little slot machine looking thing next to it, the dartboard (No one tell BCC) the TV in the corner, the position of the bar, the stereo and most importantly the odd rectangular ceiling tiles are directly from the Friendly Tap. I can't see it, but I bet the picture in the corner facing the doorway is low rez mock up of the Hogan/Andre WrestleMania poster like in Tim White's real bar. (RIP)
It's so amazing how they used to go the extra mile back then. I imagine AKI surprised THQ with this. Or THQ would tell Yuke's to do some backstages and they'd check the current build it's like 34th Street, Penn Station and the MSG rotunda lmao.

Another really dope thing they did was include all wcw wrestler taunts & move sets so if you created them you would be all set to go. I use to love running in this game at your opponent & swinging a chair that would result in blood occasionally lol this game was so good. The alternate ring attires were really cool too.

Honestly, No Mercy has the most replay value of any game I have ever owned. Whether you challenge yourself in Survival, the Championship stories, a Royal Rumble or doing 1V1 or multiplayer. It is pick up and play value is through the roof and introducing it to my son over the last 3 years has been one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had. Playing this game on an emulator (Project 64) is also fun with the addition of the Z ladder function where any match can have a ladder introduced as a weapon and you can also win with said ladder even if it was not a ladder match. Not to mention the countless mods (shout out WCW Feel the Bang). I have to confess that my copy from EBay was a copy where I experienced the save-wipe glitch. However, I was fortunate that it wiped the original owner's save file, so here's hoping mine doesn't wipe anytime soon LOL.

Awesome start to Triangle X Squared Circle Season 3. Can we please end this season with Virtual Pro Wrestling 2 for the Nintendo 64? It's the sequel to Virtual Pro Wrestling 64 and it features the All Japan Pro Wrestling roster, New Japan Pro Wrestling roster, Pancrase Hybrid Wrestling roster, FMW roster, and Gaijins within those various companies. We got legendary wrestlers like Kenta Kobashi, Vadar, Mike Barton, Johnny Ace, Mitsuhara Mitsawa, Kamala, Giant Baba, and Jushin Thunder Liger just to name a few. Match types are limited because it's Japan, but we can choose the Pancrase Hybrid Wrestling rules for an MMA-styled match which is only KO or Submission to win. Virtual Pro Wrestling 2 was the first game to include running grapples almost 4 months before WWF No Mercy was released in America and it has the test of strength that was taken from WCW/NWO Revenge. It's a great game and Virtual Pro Wrestling 2 is the best Japanese N64 wrestling game, just like WWF No Mercy is the best American N64 wrestling game.
I don't own either of the VPW games, so that could be an issue. But I assure you, this season will be big time.

I assume you will be playing it on the Xbox 360 with its superior graphics as the PS2 version looks like it is a half-baked hotdog in the graphics department. That was the first WWE game I owned, the first WWE game I played was WWE SmackDown! Shut Your Mouth. The controls on both versions of the game are identical and the right stick for grapples is as smooth as a stick of butter, ultimate control moves that are devastating like a chokeslam outside of the ring or razor's edge powerbomb onto steel steps, an area to fight in the crowd in every match type on Xbox 360 (can only fight in that area on hardcore match types on the PS2 and PSP), story mode which has the animation looking finally accurate for most moves, bar brawls where you can perform a Stone Cold Stunner after sharing a beer if you're Stone Cold Steve Austin, throw your opponent's head into a pinball machine, clothesline them into a TV set, perform Undertaker's Old School off of the railing if you're playing as Undertaker, parking lot brawls that include a Rolling Thunder off a car if you're RVD or a 619 through a limousine if you're Rey Mysterio, create an entrance for the first time, and although the Fulfill Your Fantasy match was removed, it's almost completely made up with the new Money In The Bank match where 6 participants fight for a briefcase and everyone throws each other off a ladder outside of the ring for bones to break on impact. Instantly a 9/10, everyone should play this game for retro WWE action.

@@616Entertainment The Xbox 360 version is cheap to get. The PS2 version is fine, but it lacks a lot of features the Xbox 360 version has. If you could get the Xbox 360 version before you make that episode, I could provide you a copy of my 100% save file for it so you can use it. You just need to make a new save for WWE SVR 2007, download Horizon and copy your profile ID, device ID, and console ID to my save, extract it, and then save, rehash, and resign on my save. Then, with your save file you replace yours with mine by hitting replace the file when it pops up, select mine, and hit save, rehash, and resign for it to work. Sounds like a good offer to you?

As someone who got this brand new for Xmas in 2000 I can tell you that the save bug is real and caused probably 3-4 data wipes for me after significant progress was made. Supposedly one of the triggers for it is if you used either a created wrestler or an unlockable wrestler in story mode, but not sure that was ever confirmed. Wish I could go back and see what my save file looked like as a kid.
It got me so many times. I remember one of the modes used (feel like it was royal rumble) to unlock new wrestlers featured the bug - if a particular one came running out out (you'd figure which somehow) it would do the cartdige clear. Me and my 4 closest mates had this game and always had this issue. We worked around it by always backing up any unlockables or custom characters to our memory packs.
Wow! Now that you mention it, that’s about when mine would crash too🤔. Had it happen 7 or 8 times over the years. I would spend so much time on my character and the championship mode. Once I customized everything and it would get a little stale, I’d go to the rumble match to unlock some of the other characters. Sometimes I was fine until I’d unlock everyone but sometimes it would crash after a few different rumble unlockable characters. I think you’re onto something!
The triggers were random. If you had one of those copies, it was pretty much a matter of time. It would happen at random, leading to many people saying what caused it for them. Meanwhile, everyone was saying different things. Why? Because it was random! Hahahhaa. Sorry to hear you had a bugged copy.
I mean you kind of touched on it but WWF Bacclash is a No Mercy mod Retro Randy Price is working on that is including table matches, breakable tables, hell in a cell and more. That image used with Rocc and Austin on top of the cell was from the Bacclash mod.
It's a mod now, yes. But initially there were fake internet rumors that it was actually an official game at one point that was cancelled.

19:20 this game is what got me into wrestling. It takes me back to a time playing this game with my cousin and friends at the time. I was in elementary school and N64 was life. I really just played Survival Mode over and over to get money to unlock everything. Eventually I even got enough to unlock the Ho, it was insane.
The nostalgia talk is real though, I can go play this game again right now but it's not the same because my cousin and my childhood friends aren't here with me anymore. It's a different time, it's a different world. I'm just happy I got to experience it when I did.
17:58 after putting countless hours into the game, this happened to my copy of the game so I must've had one of the early cartridges, which sucks. No Mercy is such a good game though, I didn't mind doing it again.

I think more people need to admit that nostalgia can never TRULY be recapured. I have great memories of D&D sleepovers and playing WCW vs nWo World Tour late at night after D&D. Yes the game was fun, but it was my friends that made it. WWF Warzone on retrospect is ass, but I played it with my best friends (all the CAWs were in DX) so I can never truly hate the game. It's like when I went to my 20 year high school reunion in 2019. Was it fun seeing some folks? Sure.. but all my closest friends had long since moved all over the country and weren't there, so I left just kinda feeling sad because you can't ever get those days back.

im watching this video cause i finally found a copy at this retro store near me! it cost me $110 but they had 1 copy left and i couldnt pass on playing this classic/lengendary game, iv so far played a few matches and its harder then i remember and not to take shots at AEW fight forever which i enjoyed but its no where close to be as great as no mercy is. now hopefully one day i can find here comes the pain and either smackdown vs raw 06 or 07
