Woman Says She Unknowingly Bought a Flood-Damaged Used Car

  • Flooding from the historic storms that swept across the United States this year left both houses and cars underwater. One of those vehicles was caught up during Hurricane Ida in a South Orange, New Jersey, parking lot in September, and is now filled with smelly mold. But experts warn after every major flood, thousands of vehicles like this one are cleaned up and resold to unsuspecting buyers. Joyce Darden, 80, says it happened to her used car, which she bought from Enterprise Car Sales for $17,000.

The problem is that if the damage was never reported and if you don’t inspect it before you buy it, it’s virtually impossible to prove that you didn’t do it yourself. All of these dealerships know this and that’s why they don’t care.

Easy to wash (meaning: remove) the flood designation from a vehicle title. Many states, mostly down south, will re-title a purchased car with no mention anywhere of flood damage. Then they have a local shop clean up the car; maybe even replace certain tell-tale components such as carpets, then send the car to auction, where local corner-lot used car sales pick it up and put it on their lot as a "clean" car. Maybe they know it's now-hidden history, or maybe not.

  • @Bama1963

Although it doesn’t catch every wrecked or flooded car, getting a carfax report for me is a must before I’ll even consider buying a used vehicle. Some body shops will take a car that had airbags deployed, repair the body damage but not replace the airbags without disclosing it. Buyer beware, if you don’t know what to look for then find someone that does, your money ahead if they find something wrong with the car. Any reputable car dealer or individual will allow you to take it to a mechanic.

All the carpets were completely covered in plastic and the dealer said the smell and plastic was from them just thoroughly cleaning it. This happened to me. I don't know how the dealership was able to get it to the sales floor, but they did. My tell-tale sign was extensive engine trouble; a busted air-conditioner, after what i thought was a maintenance repair; the car radio picks up AM channels only; some of the console lights flicker; finally, a small puddle of water, on the driver's side, and within a few days, the water had swelled to the seats, almost. The dealer, as well as the certified-mechanics, who performed extensive (expensive) work on my car, could have had the decency to let me know what I was dealing with, to make an informed, decision about keeping that car or buying another one.
I only put-out good, because I want good to come back to me. My conscience would bother me, if I knowingly, misled someone. Sadly, some people's moral compass, leans a different way.
I have had this car for over five years, and I intend to have it for at least another five years.
Incidentally, the dealer wants me to now, put the repairs they performed, under warranty. Their unscrupulous, deception, won't allow me to contact them to inquire about what that even means (I want to call them out, but I digress).

They have to live with a conscience knowing that they’ve sold a flood ridden car that should never have been sold

This happened to me. I bought a car from a dealership last year. It was a 2001 Chevy impala. It only had 64,000 miles on it which was why I wanted it. I should’ve wondered why it was so old with so little miles. After about seven different repairs on the car, one mechanic let me know that my radiator was about to fall out because the whole bottom of my car was rusted out.He let me know that where I got the car from was probably a hurricane Sandy car because it was on the south shore where all the flooding took place. I don’t even know if the dealership knew this or not but I am the one that has to deal with the aftermath of it. I have since junked that car

So they'll take someone's car instead of calling that owner and or giving back their belongings if any survived, and just throw it all away and resell it? Yeah the system is screwed up

Enterprise knew exactly what they were doing. I did a vin check and my car came out clean. I GOOGLED my vin number and I saw the bumper on the ground in a parking lot. I had no idea you could google a vin number and learn more. Anyway I do love my mini cooper and a bumper is a minor problem. She looks wonderful for eighty...really great. I hope I look that good and am still driving.

Mold is a horrific silent killer. Especially black mold. It almost literally took my life. I recommend if someone feels very sick and they don’t know why, maybe have your home or car tested for mold. Wish someone told me that back then. But when we know better, we do better 👊

My family had to move due to mold toxicity in our old house! It’s no joke! I’ve had terrible headaches since we moved there when I was 8 and since we moved this summer they’ve gotten better

The problem is that if the damage was never reported and if you don’t inspect it before you buy it, it’s virtually impossible to prove that you didn’t do it yourself. All of these dealerships know this and that’s why they don’t care.

When you bring a car in for inspection, they don't check for mold. Have you ever had a car inspection? What a silly thing to say!

@@ccxcxz4377 this video was about water and mold damage so I was talking about getting it inspected for water and mold damage just like they did in the video. Please think before you comment.

No record of water damage, but it took a technician a few minutes to find evidence of it on components that would (or should) be checked by the seller before they ever even purchased the vehicle to resell.
