An investigation has found that some valet companies are handing cars over to people without tickets, allowing them to take off with vehicles they don't own. An Inside Edition investigation put valet companies to the test after interviewing a man whose car was given to a thief when he left it with a valet. Josh Gelle said he returned from dinner in Newport Beach, Calif., and found the valet had given his car away to a man who asked for it without showing a ticket. #InsideEdition

I work as a booth attendant for valet and people get upset at US when THEY lose their ticket and we have to match their ID with the registration/insurance/rental agreement. This is why we do it people!! So we don’t give away the wrong car..
People will always be angry for no reason, they know why they need to specify their details. They just want to look down at you.

Lots of people. There's a myriad of reasons why but it's not uncommon.
In many 5 stars hotels, you HAVE to hand them the car if you want to park in their underground parking; and then you sign a paper at the reception when you check in that has a tiny hidden agreement that says "the hotel and its staff is not responsible for any damages done to the vehicle".
We found about this the hard way, when the hotel scratched my dad's Bentley. My dad has a REALLY good lawyer though.

Ron Spi I've been to one place where I had to valet my car (Job Interview) there was a valet and a very small and tight parking lot so he had to park and maneuver cars around and keep track of people, when I went in... the valet told me to leave the keys in the car, and other people had to do it too. big city limited parking

essel23fly when I went to downtown Buffalo for an auto show, the only parking available was Valet unless you knew the area. Luckily someone told me about a cheap parking lot nearby I could park at and take the train over
I'm a valet and there's plenty of reasons why people would want to valet. If you can afford it, it just gives customers less things to worry about when they're going out to dinner. I drive all of our customers cars very carefully and you're more than likely in good hands, trust me. i wouldnt be parking cars if i was no good at it haha

I always avoid valet service. If parking is such a hassle at a particular place, I'll take a cab and not have to worry about my vehicle all night!
I did that job part time for a year when I was in college. It was a bunch of college dudes parking the cars and giving tickets. The owner did not train any of us for any contingency. The only training was “you give this ticket to the client, the other half goes with the key and you run back for the next one”. That was the extent of it.

happens at car dealers as well. my aunt was running late and couldn't pick up her car from the Audi dealership in time. I lived only 2 miles from there, so she called me asked me to get it. I called the dealer and asked their shuttle van to pick me up. When I got there, I went to the cashier and paid the service bill. I then walked to the guy with the key. I pointed at a key fob with a rainbow Hawaiian keychain. I honestly thought that it was my aunt's because she had one like it. The guy took the key and drove the car to the front. I got in and left. Later that night, my aunt came to my house and thank me for the favor. I gave her the key fob and she said "that must be yours... I didn't know you got a new Audi?" I didn't... I told her those were for "her" Audi. We walked to the garage and there it was, an almost-new Audi A6. My aunt freaked out because it was not her A6.(different color, different year) The dealership was already closed at that time. First thing on Monday, my aunt came to my house again and we drove that Audi back to the dealer. The actual owner didn't come to pick up his/her car on Friday, so nobody knew about the mix-up except us. The service advisor apologized and got my aunt's car out front. Oh well...

When someone asks for a car and they don’t have a tag it’s not hard to ask what the name is and then check id. I’ve been doing it for a little over 2 years and it’s not very difficult to do it right

As a valet during school breaks, if someone has lost their ticket (which happens all the time), I ask them if they have any type of keychain on their keys and 100% of the time, I can see its their keys.
I would ask for id then check the registration.
D Hutchins it's easier to do a key check than a car registration check. If you borrowed someone's car you wouldn't be able to get it back

To make it fail safe you can ask to describe any item that's in the trunk or areas like that.

I had literally just gotten the car like 5 days before. I spent 78k on my Land Rover Range Rover Sport HSE. We went to the mall and left our car with the Valet. When we were done shopping we hand them our ticket and the dudes like “oh your sister got it” and I’m like “uhm sir my sister passed away when she was a baby” and he starred at me. Luckily I called Land Rover and they were able to track it down. When we got a Uber to the location a cop had pulled the lady over for speeding lmao! She was arrested. But THANK GOD I got my car back! I worked so hard for it!
