    The air intake is typically right above the manufacturer's logo at the front of the car. If the water gets higher than about 1 inch above the logo, the car is going to swallow water. That's why it's essential to drive dead slow to avoid making a wave that pushes water up and over the intake. If the engine swallows water, with a petrol you might be able to maybe run it after it dries out but probably not. With a Diesel it's even more unlikely because the high compression means you'll bend a connecting rod if the engine tries to compress water. Honestly, the best car out of all of these is the Tesla because it doesn't intake anything to run. That thing will keep working probably even totally submerged if the seals around the electronics hold.

      I'm thinking the best thing to do is pull the spark plugs out a petrol or glow plugs / injectors out a diesel whatevers easier then crank the engine over until it sprays all the water back out without compressing it. Definitely don't park the car using the starter motor in gear or even try to restart the engine. Will insurance or warranty even cover those fools or are they about to get shafted by the stealership! Love how the Tesla ate that for breakfast. Everyone goes too fast! Need to crawl through it instead. Air intake is behind the grill unless the range rovers take in from back of bonnet. In the event that water gets sucked into an engine, it is advisable not to attempt to restart it immediately. Instead, remove the spark plugs and then restart the engine. This will allow the water to be expelled through the spark plug holes, preventing hydro-locking of the engine and avoiding damage to its components, if not already sustained during the initial water ingestion.

    During my career as a mechanic I dismantled several engines that were wrecked due to hydraulic lock up. When water enters the combustion chamber on the compression stroke it has nowhere to go, and water cannot be compressed. When the piston reaches the top of it’s stroke it meets the uncompressible water, and the usual result is a broken piston and/or a bent con rod. It only takes an eggcup sized amount of water to enter the engine to destroy it.

    As so many have pointed out, water in the air intake is going to cause hydrolock, and most modern vehicles now have low level air intakes due to compact packaging requirements - but it's also interesting just how many petrol vehicles seem to be runners after the event, but running really badly due to damp looms and water surrounding the ignition coil modules.

    • @StrokeMahEgo
      @StrokeMahEgo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      There's often a drain to evacuate water from the air intake, provided you're not still underwater.
      If it ingests a lot of water into the engine yes, it will hydrolock, but if only a little actually made it in, it can often work itself out, provided you can otherwise get the car to run, from the wet coils and so on.

      I live in Louisiana where we have to deal with water in the roadways fairly often. Your really can't tell how deep the water is before you're in it and going around every little bit of water you see because you can't tell if it's 2 inches or 2 feet deep isn't practical at all. That said, 99 times out of 100 the police will barricade a roadway if its too deep to drive through so if you don't see a barricade like in this video, most people just go for it. The people that intentionally sneak around barricades and get stuck absolutely deserve it though lol

Usually once you're above your hubs you're dangerously close to things like your transfer case, dif and tranny breathers. Then above that is usually your air intake tucked somewhere in the bumper. Hell my Celica routes the intake right to the front grill, right at the bottom so maybe 6" off the ground at most it's actually below my tranny breathers.

      @@AndreFG I've never tried it, but it does sound like a good idea. The water level does appear lower at the rear end. I got my experience trying to get a flight out of Houston during a Hurricane. I made it to the airport, but unfortunately not enough the airport workers made it there and flights were cancelled. The only negative side effect, the starter was a little rusty trying to start it several days later. But, it did start and the vehicle had no issues.

      Not only this, but you want traction when driving through water. You go fast you're likely to get swept away if the water is moving at all, which only increases the deeper the water. Not to mention with flooding that bad it could cause road erosion. I had to drive through water in a truck and I could feel pieces of the road breaking up under me

    2- if you do it, do it slowly
    3- make sure the water isn't deeper than what your car can cross

    Forcing water into your air intake is a great way to destroy your engine, as some of these drivers found out.

    • @mjhmech4903

      Rufford ford kills more vehicles due to driver incompetence than anything else. Having watched countless video's 90% of the vehicles would have made it through fine had it been driven at low speed with minimal throttle input! In most of these vids the water is barely at hub height so no need at all for diff breathers or a snorkel! Those attempting to cross when the depth is 3' or over in a BMW or Sprinter are just begging for failure! Leave it for the JCB's. PS: Most 4WD's have a MINIMUM safe wading depth of 600mm ..... but NOT at 60mph! 😁
