I have always done light mechanics on my cars, from changing brakes, calipers, alternators, starter motors, bushings, bearings, all fluids, practically everything except opening an engine or transmission, but never a motorcycle. This video has encouraged me to buy my first Gold Wing, thank you and congratulations on your channel.
I wouldn’t limit this video to just Goldwings. Both Honda’s I’ve owned have been identical to this with the only difference being the furniture in getting to the headstock. Lovely video, going to help a lot of people!
we disassembled the entire rear part of such a motorcycle, cooked a stretcher, they have a disease, the stretcher bursts from loads, so I had to sweat to expose everything for welding ...)))) hello to you dear man! forgive my English, I'm from Russia.
Here I went spending money on a blind bearing/race puller for a job I may never do again, and then you just whip up a tool for the same job with ease. You win!
me : don't have the tool, followed by frantically searching through the Screwfix catalogue Del : don't have the tool, need to make a tool What!!!!! you da man Del. Great editing and camera work once again. Thanks for the lesson!!!!! Much love to you and Penny x
Thank you so much Brother, just simple maintenance, and a house keeping job really... its just that the house is a ten room mansion in this case..@!!!! have a great week and be safe.. D&Pxx
Very thorough video Del. It reminded me of watching my wife take all day to prepare Thanksgiving dinner and then watching the kids make it disappear in 10 minutes. Good to see the use of a torque wrench too. I rode the autobahn a few years back, and at 265 KPH you start thinking about things like that. Stay well.
Hi Joe, always good to hear from you, and yes, on a bike like this, it's good to know everything is done up properly... love the Thanksgiving dinner line, made me chuckle! Keep safe and have you made the other 5 glasses for the miniature cocktail set yet?! Have a great week!
All-day really? it takes the human body 12 hours to turn a good rib-eye steak to crap my partner can do it in 20 minutes, I have labels on the microwave (crematorium) and oven (the alter). No matter how hard she tries it turns out like leather. No joking I cook my own, and she leaves the kitchen like the aftermath of a war zone. She was christened Zita by her dad, the patron saint of maids and servants, though to be fair I prefer she is called Zita and not Laurence (save you looking it up he is the patron saint of cooks and chefs).
Yikes, I thought my CX500Turbo had a lot of stuff going on up there, but nope, nothing compared to this, lol. Brilliant change up to watch in your varied episode theme, as always. Did my heart good to actually see the bearings being greased the proper way, as I was taught over 40 years ago, awesome. Thank you!
And this is why I've finally gone back to naked bikes after years of plastic fights just to change a bulb .. But that said I do love the old goldwing perfect for what it's made for ! Great concise video Del production is awesome 👍🏻☮❤
Hey brother Springy, thank you most kindly sir, it was a fun day in the garage, and good to get elbow deep in such a big old barn of a bike.. reminds me of my days fixing buses.. lol! and i guess we all love naked bikes when its summer and the ride to work is in a balmy 20 degrees and fine milky sunshine... but 6 months from now, heading out for a night shift in the howling sleet, then suddenly life on a bike like this makes a bit more sense aye..!!! Peas N Loaf Brother.. take it easy and enjoy your week.. D&Pxx
I've learned so much by watching your channel. I got my 2018 Triumph Street twin salvaged(needless to say, it needed some work). It's my first bike and I was able to fix and maintain it just by watching you work on the Scrambler. Amazing Vids!! Thanks for the help! Cheers from California!
Thanks Rick, great to hear from you Sir, and really appreciate your support, good luck with the project, have lots of fun with it, it'll end up something to be proud of!
Thank you for the video. I just picked up a 2000 GL1500 and it needs a new triple tree and this video is a very big help on me doing it myself. Thank you sir. Be safe out there.
Hi there Mo, thank you for your kind feedback, we're glad the video's useful... and you will be saving yourself maybe 10 labour hours at the dealer at least for a job like this... and of course, congratulations on your new bike, enjoy every mile Sir!
If I ever have a blind bearing race like that lower one, I get the mig welder out and run a weld all the way round it and when it cools down it shrinks and drops out on its own ✌️
You are right that is what I do, im a maintenance machinist and we do this all the time, actually if you just heat the race it might just fall out, so if you don't have a welder this might work also
Even if I did get all the parts, screws, etc. The wheel would be 30 degrees of the handle bar! That’s so funny. I’ve made so many tools from old parts, wrenches! “Del” = genius at work.
Just seen this I just don’t have that aptitude to do what you do, hence why I probably wont have a gold wing as my final bike. My biggest fear is buying the tools i don’t have and then getting stuck with the bike all in bits. I have followed you for a few years now you always make me smile and its all about your subscribers saving money and being safe. I would like a gold wing though. Stay safe.
Just because you can't fix and maintain a Gold Wing doesn't mean you can't own one Peter, there are plenty of good independent garages that could take care of it for you, after all, you don't have to be a builder to own a house right.?
You're most welcome Ralph, congratulations on your new purchase, glad to hear you're saving the ol' girl and keeping her on the road... make sure you check those cam belts! Ride safe.
Goldwings. Wow a lot of stuff you have to take off in order to get the job done. Never liked all the plastic stuff covering up important areas of the bike. Makes it harder to get to. Other than that great video. Now I know what to do on those bikes. Thank you Del.
Job well done mate. Great how to, will help a lot of people out for years to come. That wing looks good all blacked out. Penny and you have a great and safe week. Cheers
Thanks mate, and I agree, when it turned up, I thought it was a darkside Ultra! Hope you're well Sir and enjoying some sunshine and keeping safe, we've heard about the new issues in Victoria, so stay vigilant mate, hope you and the family are all well, D&Px
GL1500 wow that surprised me, a pleasant surprise tho. As you well know Honda engineers came up with an air filter and said lets build a bike around it and the GW was born. Ever since I sold the busa Ive been looking for a GL1500 that wont require heaps of work for cheaper club registration. But lately I have been sold on the 2018+ DCT GW. What an awesome machine but at that price its pretty prohibitive. Great vid as always, hopefully will increase your subscriptions to GW members and you make it look so do'able. Kudos to you and Penny for all the time you put in to make such a great vid, Im sure it will be appreciated by many. Cheers.
Why thank you so much Brother Volvi, that's very kind of you... it's hard to believe this bike is actually 28yrs old, and still such a rock solid barn of a work horse! The solidness of engineering in it is amazing, nothing flexes or moves, even the plastics are beefier and more solid than the average sportsbike... I pity the fool that pulls out on one of these in the high street, I reckon it'd be a very bad day for them! If you're looking for a Wing, the very first generation 1800's are getting affordable now, and more importantly, they're as easy to work on as these 1500s, it's when you get to the modern current bikes, is when you start needing computers and science degrees to diagnose faults... and thanks for noticing the work on the filming, PP puts a lot of time in behind the scenes that usually doesn't get noticed, so she appreciated your comment, have a good week, stay safe and well, D&Px
This easily could have been a 2 hour or longer video but you hit all the high points. I have a GL1500 that needs this done and actually, it's not as bad as I thought it might be so thanks much for that. Also, since the forks have to come off, I might as well do the seals while I'm at it. Thanks Delboy!
Sure thing mate, if you're not done this yourself, then the very best of luck with it, just take a little care with the indicator cancelling mechanism, it's a bit tricky if it all falls apart, and make sure the piece of harness inside the neck tube is healthy, and that the years of twisting action haven't fractured anything... good luck with it, hope it goes well for you!
Thanks Del, I'm grateful for the different way you removed the bottom race, with a drift in a vice, looks easier than recent videos, I have bearings sitting but have been putting them off because they looked hard but that looks much easier. The bikes been wandering for a while and difficult to be precise at low speeds. Anyway thanks for another new tip.
Most welcome Sir, just an alternative method, kind of adapted it from the way you would insert them with a press,... if I had a hydraulic press, then that would be he method... we never have enough equipment do we, but there's always a way! And sure thing, if a bike starts to wander about, it's usually a sign the bearings are getting tired! Good luck with it!
you're a great mechanic and i learn alot watching your videos. i would be tempted to take off alot of those covers and leave them off if i owned a 1500 wing.
Cracking Chronicle of your mastery of the GL1500 Headstock Bearing, Del. The ubiquitous Road Gobbling Glide machine has very few informative Vids - Thanks for sharing yours with us. You have a great instructional technique and delivery - Keep it up, Sir! This funny talking Texan loves your Channel.
Why thank you Paul, i appreciate that Sir, and glad you enjoyed the video, the bike will be back in again at some point for a Cam Belt change,, so that's more to come in the future.. take care and keep safe.. Del.
You editing and filming skills have gotten off the charts! This job surprised me... Not saying it's easy peasy, but not nearly as hard as I imagined it would be. I may tackle this one day. Love to penny ..Mate!
Glad you enjoyed it and it was helpful... thanks for your kind words on the productions, we do work incredibly hard to keep the channel moving forwards!
Seriously impressed as usual, but I have say - Penny did well, awesome camera work and the editing gets better all the time. I can only begin to appreciate the work going in after taking the video. Well done to you both. Oh, and thanks... Your channel is top of my list 😁
Thank you so much Joe (and this is Penny answering this one!), this was a long day at the garage, and a lot of filming, and between us it took roughly 12hrs to edit, so overall a 21hr schedule to get this video online! And really glad to hear it's appreciated, it really gives us a boost to know that it's not unnoticed, thank you for your kind words and your long-term support, keep safe and keep well, Pennyx
Brilliant Video, I have a GL1500 as well, and do all the work on it myself, so this is one job I still have to do, have already done the timing belts, another straight fwd job, but as you say, anything to do with a gold wing is 4 hours taking the plastic off and an hour to do the job lol, looking forward to other videos you do on the wing 😃😃
Thank you buddy, great to hear from a fellow Wing Nut!... cam belts tomorrow evening, just finishing the edit... as you know, it's a simple enough job, just hours of shifting furniture to get at them!
great Del, another bike I'm not going to have, just because of all the plastic bits. Good point about the manuals, I also find the proper tools for the job help immensely, got the internal bearing pullers for my sportster wheel bearings, saved me loads of time, although I did have to modify one of the collets. I don't find Harleys therapeutic to work on. Keep up the good work mate.
Thanks Andy, Harleys are definitely a different kettle of fish when it comes to service and maintenance, and sometimes you do need a sense of humour at some of the daft engineering they seem to employ, but in some way, that's some of their charm cos there's nothing else like it on the market (probably for a reason lol), thanks for your kind words and really appreciate your support.
Goldwings are such a great bike tho. I totally understand your sentiment tho because that's what I used to think until I came into a GL 1500 for free (close relative that can't ride anymore) and it's the ONLY bike I ride anymore and I have a Honda Shadow and an old Kawasaki LTD I've owned for almost 30 years. They call these a lazy boy with wheels for a reason, ha!
@@rickdff62 I agree 100% the GL 1500 Honda Goldwing is the best bike ever made these people watch these videos they think oh my God what a nightmare!!! But what they don't realize is most of the stuff you don't have to fool with until it gets to 70 or 80 or a hundred thousand miles. For the most part you change the oil put new tires on them when they wear out and ride the hell out of them!!! Probably the most reliable bike ever made!!!
Hi Geoff, hope you're well! Thanks as ever for your kind support, hope you're managing to enjoy some sunshine rides on that beautiful Harley! Ride safe, D&Px
Great Video, thank You. wow! Nine billable hours @ $115 /hr U.S. (in my neck of the woods) that's $1,035 plus parts and tax. No wonder most guys do their own repairs even if it takes them days to complete.
I'm doing progressive springs and rebuilding the forks it would be stupid not to do stem bearings also guess I'll be ordering them too it's a easy job just time consuming I did my gl1200 thanks for the video
Not at all mate, you could do this on the main stand on the ground, am just a lazy bastid, too old to keep bending over, after all the years of doing this!
Hey man beautiful job well done man..when you tell people what you have to do to get the job done they don't want to pay..thanks again for a job well done👍👌😊🤗
I bought a cheap GL1200 last year and this was the first job I did on it. There's a UK based company on eBay called Honda Classics that sells custom tools to remove/torque the stem nut and lock nut. It's super important to get the right torque on steering stem bearings and these were much cheaper than buying the OEM tools. Also be very careful with the wires on the turn signal cancel unit (going through the steering stem). It's quite annoying to put the whole bike back together and then discover that the wire wasn't connected :)
ha ha, never done that yet, but its easily possible i guess, also remember the orientation of the three tin plates on the turn signal switch under the yoke, if they arent in the right order it won't work. if you have a need for parts for your 12' mate , you can also check out "Broken Wings" for used spares.. !
Thanks Cliff... glad you enjoyed it, got a cam belt change coming up soon as i can get to it.. just got to order the parts and get s free day to do it..!
Yes indeed, like fitting new tyres, where the wear and tear is gradual and you adapt to the awkward handling, and then back to sudden perfection again once it's replaced, there's always a marked difference in feel.
Great job, you answered one question.... total time. Next question where can I get the low setting torque wrench.... I’ve a heavy duty one bit need something up to 30 NM ?
Hi Nev, this is the one I use, I've never found a wrench with such a wide range from 7-112Nm, it's all steel and really solidly built, comes in it's own bespoke box, a really good tool for the money, here's a link: www.sealey.co.uk/product/5637202070/torque-wrench-micrometer-style-38sq-drive-7-112nm5-83lbft---calibrated
Nah, once you get stuck in mate, you'd soon get it knocked out, half the issue is filming, makes it longer, if you started early morning, anyone could knock this out in a day!
And next in next weeks video, I will be showing you how to replace the tracks on a chieftain tank!!😂😂😂. Nice vid Del, especially adapting the removal tool. I di love this channel. Always something to learn. Ta, mate!👍🏻🤗
Not a single rusty broken bolt.. who is this imposter? :D Can't get enough of these ones. Intimidating job for the "never done it before" crowd but so simple when you see and understand it.
That job is made 10 x Harder with all that clobber to remove. What a pain in the backside Mate! I didn't think all those bolts would come out without a fight either did you? Just imagine how much that would cost to all be done at a Main Dealer. The owner would need counselling for the shock. Even if they charged £50 an hr & was on it a day that is over £400 labour charge & they wouldn't do it any better than you! Well Done Mate. No doubt someone will find fault or pick holes in what you have done. Take no notice Del.
Hi Ian, yes any internal task on a bike like this is a heavy labour cost, but its not complex, just long winded and time consuming. just patience and a methodical approach is all it takes.
Delboy's Garage yes mate done more miles on the Enfield than the Harley already this year , needs a few home comforts as they seat is like a scaffolding plank and just as hard, but there’s loads of add one s , take care
Delboy's Garage think some 6to 8 mm preloads inserts may be the first on the front forks , but in all fairness it’s priced good for what you get thanks again mate
You bought a Goldwing! haha. You'll be glad to hear after nearly 6 years without a bike I have one being delivered Friday. You guys still ride out? I'm still on the same number. Hope your both good Del & Pen. See you soon maybe. Sal in Cornwall :)
Is that you Sal?! Oh my goodness, how great to hear from you again! Drop us an email and let's catch up... delboysgarage@yahoo.com And yeah, still riding, so maybe a cuppa at Kilmington Cafe (which has a new name now!)... let's chat soon, and enjoy that new bike, ride safe, D&Px
i would've greased the front shaft for good measure since it was out and replace front wheel bearings same time just for good measure. Then the front end is totally done. Time is all in taking the Tupper wear off. Do fork oil the whole 9 yards but as per customer budget. Get it all done once the wheel and Tupper wear is off. Perhaps in another episode of the change out.
Gday mate good video ,i never use steel on steel when doing bearings wheel or whatever i use a brass drift .Like the little setting tool set very handy ,the owmer could do with investing in a can of brakecleen i was surprised you didnt give em a clean get rid of that dust ect while you had those elephant ear things off ,anyway good video my lowering kit arrive from lust racing put it on today still cnt flat foot but pretty close take care .
Delboy's Garage Would love to ride one some day, to see if it’s as comfortable as it looks. About the plate I mentioned: I’ll look into it this week, been busy with my bike and completely forgot. 🤦♀️
Peice of cake campared to an 1800 2001-2017. I noticed it had already had the berings done, because they come with ball bearings from the factory. Whenever I do these I replace the fork springs and seals, because if the berings have had it the forks springs normally have too. No one can say these bikes arnt well built.
I have always done light mechanics on my cars, from changing brakes, calipers, alternators, starter motors, bushings, bearings, all fluids, practically everything except opening an engine or transmission, but never a motorcycle. Getting rare now those mate..!
Awesome thanks just a little refresher. Owned Goldwing's since I was 16yrs old now 60 still driving my 1999
Most welcome, glad to help.

My girlfriend brought an old ninja 250r. The headstock bearings were fucked. Without your videos, I would never have attempted it. Thank, mate.
The first part (disassembling the front end) was so stressful to watch.. 😆
Great job and even greater patience. 👌
After awhile I have me 1500 for five year you get to know how thing go. But I won't mess with the engine😲
me : don't have the tool, followed by frantically searching through the Screwfix catalogue

Bravo , l used a angled pry bar like you made. Just grabbed and tried worked out..Piece of pie to drive em
I own 1500 goldwing, never thought how much parts take apart. Was hoping put trike on it someday. Thanks for sharing!!
I have to say that is a lot easier than I thought it would be. Thank you so much
You are so welcome, glad it helped you!
Thank you for this video to make easier to us as Goldwing owners
Our pleasure!
Very instructive, answered my questions of WTF is this and why is it here, too. Thank you for sharing this job!

@@Moonfleet41 lol It sits nicely in the garage with two Gpz9’s and a triumph Speedmaster, happy days
As always neatly explained. I have learnt so many things by watch your work. I am a fan of your.
Thank you very much!
Now that's going to be a God send to anybody with a Gold Wing 1500, Great video Del , But I will stick to my Honda Chaly C70.
great Del, another bike I'm not going to have, just because of all the plastic bits.
Soooo glad I don't have a Goldwing 😀 - Nicely done as usual 👍
Agree on no Gold Wing!
Story of my 250r life lol
Mine is 18 years old. No problems
What a labour intensive job, as usual you aced it, top job young man, hi to PP & all the best 👌👍x
Hi Geoff, hope you're well! Thanks as ever for your kind support, hope you're managing to enjoy some sunshine rides on that beautiful Harley! Ride safe, D&Px
@@Moonfleet41 just about to go out for a tootle, x👍
Great job, I got to understand better what's under or inside my Honda 1500 Goldwing, I love this bike and plan to keep it for a while
Super video as usual. Love the fact you didn't wear gloves.
I enjoyed every single minute of this video , great work and superb editing .
Glad you enjoyed it so much Kenneth, many thanks.
that goldwing looks ace blacked out Del , ive done loads over the years and yes the actual bearing replacement is the easy bit ...keep it up Del
LOL Well done Del. Thats definitely one of those jobs where you don't want to find any parts left in the parts tray when you're done. Keep well.
Too right mate, it's good to get the parts bench nice and empty when you're done!
Great Video, thank You. wow! Nine billable hours @ $115 /hr U.S. (in my neck of the woods) that's $1,035 plus parts and tax. No wonder most guys do their own repairs even if it takes them days to complete.
True that!
And this is why I've only had naked bikes! Great video, as usual Del. All the best to you and Penny.
I'm doing progressive springs and rebuilding the forks it would be stupid not to do stem bearings also guess I'll be ordering them too it's a easy job just time consuming I did my gl1200 thanks for the video
Yeah like I thought at the beginning a doddle of a job....NOT !!! 😟. First tool you need is a1500lb bike lift 😁. Brilliant informative vid 👍
Well said, you got that right buddy, stay safe there and take care of the family, D&Px
Great video to watch Del, like you say, the amount of furniture to remove and refit is astronomical 😳
So from what I’m seeing, it’s a great tile to change your fork oil and grease your front wheel bearing as well
If they hadn't already been done, yes mostly certainly!
Del, absolutely Brilliant, nice to see you working on a wing !
Thanks Cliff... glad you enjoyed it, got a cam belt change coming up soon as i can get to it.. just got to order the parts and get s free day to do it..!
Excellent job Del. You made that look fairly easy.
Your a proper garage ageing. This time as the owner
I will NEVER complain about changing my 99 road star head bearings out again, geese! Lol, great job!
Flat black makes everything look cool.
I don't think i'd ever have a goldwing but a very interesting video. nice one.
That would probably take me several weekends to get done. Very satisfying job to do though - the first ride after it feels like new again!
Yes indeed, like fitting new tyres, where the wear and tear is gradual and you adapt to the awkward handling, and then back to sudden perfection again once it's replaced, there's always a marked difference in feel.
And I thought my 4 clip quick release windshield was a pain in the ass!
Ha ha.. yeah, kinda makes you grateful aye.! Thanks Alan, good to hear from you always..
Rick Simpson I’ve got that down to one helper. The other one I use to help me check the oil level dipstick
Wow... totally mesmerised by that job..alot involved good job Del
Great job and very clear ! How often should you change the fluid in the shocks ? Could you make a video ? Thanks
Presuming you mean forks and not the rear shocks, then oil is traditionally changed in all motorcycles every 2yrs!
@@Moonfleet41 Sorry that is what I meant to ask thanks and I did find your video ! Thanks for the help
Well that was easy......FFS. well done that man, impressed.
9 hours 😳 that’s a mission and a half Del 👍 that would be a 2-3 day job for me even with the right tools lol 😂
Nah, once you get stuck in mate, you'd soon get it knocked out, half the issue is filming, makes it longer, if you started early morning, anyone could knock this out in a day!
Straightforward but still a lot of work!
Nice video!!
Exactly that Harold, nothing complex about it.. just a long winded operation to dig your way into the job..!
And next in next weeks video, I will be showing you how to replace the tracks on a chieftain tank!!😂😂😂. Nice vid Del, especially adapting the removal tool. I di love this channel. Always something to learn. Ta, mate!👍🏻🤗
Cheers buddy, most welcome, glad you enjoyed it, simple housekeeping stuff, it's just in this case, it happened to be a 5-bed detached house lol
Thanks for the help, I won't be taking mine to the dealer
I like the wing, old plain Jane is best imo. Great video Del!
It's a car with 2 wheels!
Interesting how much time it takes to get to the job in question.
Great video. :-)
You said that right mate! A proper heifer...
Not a single rusty broken bolt.. who is this imposter? :D Can't get enough of these ones. Intimidating job for the "never done it before" crowd but so simple when you see and understand it.
Yes indeed sir, i whole pile of Tupperware to shift out the way.. but its just a motorbike underneath aye..!
Good to see repairs again Del you made it look so easy 👍😀
Hey Tony, good to hear from you mate, hope life is good, and you're enjoying the new pony..! D&Px
Delboy's Garage yes mate done more miles on the Enfield than the Harley already this year , needs a few home comforts as they seat is like a scaffolding plank and just as hard, but there’s loads of add one s , take care
@@tonymartin3780 go for it mate, make it your own.. but no tassels allowed this time aye..!
Thanks man that really helped keep up the good work!
Glad it helped Cyril, thanks for watching!
Bloody 'ell Fella. I feel knackered now, and that was just removing the front wheel!😂😂😂
Ha ha.. it is a big old barn ainit?..
Nicely done though mate. Keep safe.
I thought my Suzuki V-Strom has too much plastic. I won’t complain again when I have to change the air filter.
I need to change the bearings but i also need to rebuild the forks. Looks like i need to plan both at the same time.
No fork service? Of course you make it look easy, I hope my bike doesn’t need that for a long time.
Wow, nice job. Looks like the bearings weren’t even the biggest job here. That Goldwing looks like an airplane without it’s front wheel, haha.
Aeroplane or jetski! What a mad bike aye?
Delboy's Garage
Would love to ride one some day, to see if it’s as comfortable as it looks. About the plate I mentioned: I’ll look into it this week, been busy with my bike and completely forgot. 🤦♀️
good job, liked the new colour over the old colour, but it's still a big girls blouse LOL
Thanks Del I really enjoyed watching that. Nice and methodical as usual and made it look easy 👍
What a fantastic vid i had my breath held everytime you was cracking a bolt or nut glad it went well :-) cheers del variety is the spice of life
Glad you enjoyed it mate, and I really enjoyed this job too, you're absolutely right, variety does keep it interesting!
my gl1500 is awful with tar snakes and slow speed maneuvering, but doesnt exhibit any slop that i can tell, i may have to do this as well
Nice maintenance job Del,
Nick
You are an artist
Nice repair !
Nice job bro...
Thank you so much 😀
Excellent job mate..
Great video could not believe all them plastics I think I will stick with my triumph explorer
Great video!! Thank you very much!
Peice of cake campared to an 1800 2001-2017. I noticed it had already had the berings done, because they come with ball bearings from the factory. Whenever I do these I replace the fork springs and seals, because if the berings have had it the forks springs normally have too. No one can say these bikes arnt well built.
