    As a screenwriter, I appreciate your helpful review of active versus passive voice. Active voice along with present tense works best in screenwriting because the narration portion of the script must be described in dynamic real time. Just as an audience watches a movie on the big screen, the screenwriter must write it as if it was happening in front of us. Passive voice and past tense sounds too draggy and novel-like for a screenwriter's purposes. Thanks for the punchy lesson.

    Hi, your videos are amazing i learned a lot from your channel but my request is please make some videos on day to day life incidents and tricky English short and sweet conversations for example like sitting on the floor at least an hour after then when you stand up on the floor suddenly your legs are might be numbness like this kind of expression i hope you understand

  • @gpknkee
    @gpknkee 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Here is simple understanding. :)
    verb-ing and verb past participle are adjectives.
    : verb-ing shows state of actively doing something.
    : verb p.p shows state of being result of past action by others
    when you use adjectives, you need be verb to complete the meaning of sentence.
    so, < subject+ be(verb) + adjective(kind of object of be) > structure is formed.

      Hi Abdollah. That's a great question. TO KNIT is an irregular verb. For the past simple & past participle, we can use knit/knitted. Both are okay. I think the -ed form may be more common in the US. So for example: Yesterday, I knit a sweater. / Yesterday, I knitted a sweater. Hope this helps! 😃👍

    Very useful lesson,
    how can we find there is no object in PV

    • @InteractiveEng
      @InteractiveEng  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your comment. That's a great question. First, you can ask "Who?" or "What?" the subject is doing to determine if there's an object. If you can answer the question, then the answer is your object. For example: My best friend paints pictures --> What does my best friend paint? (pictures) / She helped me yesterday. --> Who did she help? (me). If there's an object, then we change it to passive. If the sentence is already in the passive voice, then we can change it to active. And the subject in the passive will be the object in the active voice. 😃

    Hi my name is Selvin and I’ve been watching your videos for 2 months but I haven’t commented yet. I’ve been living in the USA for almost 2 years and my English is improving while I speak and I need to ask. Should I stop thinking about my first language to Learn more and more English?

    • @InteractiveEng
      @InteractiveEng  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Selvin. Thanks for commenting & checking out today's lesson. If you'd like to continue improving your English skills, I'd recommend continuous practice & study. So if you're living in the US, hopefully you're getting daily speaking practice. Then there's a lot of fun practice you can do on our own between reading & watching TV (I'd recommend using subtitles from time to time). The more exposure you have to the target language (English), the more you'll train your brain to start processing everything in English. Keep practicing & keep up the good work! 😃👍

    Why do we use the word voice with passive and active. What does it mean here? Sound or not?

    I have a question. If I said, "A Honda is what my friend drives", would it be considered as passive? Does passive voice strictly need to be with a past participle? Also if the statement isn't passive, what would it be categorised as? Or is that just plain bad English? Thanks

    • @InteractiveEng
      @InteractiveEng  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for commenting James. In your sentence, "...what my friend drives" is an adjective clause. So this is not the passive voice. The adjective clause in this case describes the car. 👍

    Well explained and understood video - thanks loads - however why is passive voice 'formal' and active voice 'informal' ?? Thx

    • @InteractiveEng
      @InteractiveEng  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Isabel. Thanks for your comment. The passive voice has more authority & often used in formal texts because in some contexts the subject may be irrelevant. For example, writing down the steps of a complex procedure. It's not necessary to identify the person/scientist/researcher completing the action each time. Active is more common, easier to read, and therefore viewed as being less formal. 😃👍

    • @isabelnavarro6611

      Brilliant now I understand. It's not something which is taught in English schools. In fact, in the UK you aren't taught as much grammar as what you ought to be.
      Your videos are of great help and it's very much appreciated.
      Thank you

      @@isabelnavarro6611 We were not taught this either in high school (USA). It's like the U.S. Dept. of Ed. wants everyone to sound stupid. I'm sure they would have another class on Ebonics, before they taught this.

      Thanks for writing sentences Annie. Here are a couple of things to keep in mind: 😃👍
      2. We were locked out of the room by someone. (Remember to use the verb "to be" + past participle in the Passive.)
      3. I have kept up my diet for over a month. (This is an active sentence written in the present perfect. And "to keep" is the main verb.)

      You must have heard someone say "I have been kept up 'on' my diet for over a month," which I think is dumb for a native speaker to say but never mind. They've been saying it anyway where I used to live before I relocated to Germany.

    What abut simple future how to change the active to passive

    • @InteractiveEng
      @InteractiveEng  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Natalie. Thanks for commenting. Changing the simple future looks like this: He will take the bus. --> The bus will be taken by him. 👍 Truthfully, it's not often used unless when omitting the person/thing doing the action. For example, you may hear something like: The report will be submitted tomorrow. This would be a more common use. 😊
