The way they make sure to be the loudest in the restaurant, try to get everyone to interact with their dumb camera and films everyone without any permission at all. Really insufferable and to be completely honest typical of white travellers

For those of you wondering Hải Nam is the Vietnamese translation for Chinese Hainan province. So it's literally Hainan rice chicken.
Also if you want to make that rice, it's super easy. First stir fried the Gao, or uncooked rice (usually in oil). Then, boiled your chicken. Don't rip the chicken up yet, throw the entire Chicken into the boiling pot.
The proceed to use the boiled chicken broth to cook the stir fried uncooked rice. And voila Hainan rice chicken.
The secret to the crunchiness to Vietnamese salad is either young bamboo shoots or banana tree peels.
In Vietnam, banana trees are used in their entirety. The thin white and brown slice that you see in the salad is the banana branch peel.

@manhphuc4335 brother can you tell/show me how to stir fry the gao for this? i'm a complete newbie at cooking, i followed a few recipe on youtube but they all taste bland with a hint of chicken smell, this sounds like the missing step, thanx in advance !!

    • @manhphuc4335
      @manhphuc4335 ปีที่แล้ว +4

@@MrQ12elve so normally we put the Gao in a wok, so that the heat is kept within the rice, and you only need to stir fry shortly.
Put the rice in a wok, heat up slowly, after a while, put oil (vegetable oil) at the rim of the wok so sips in the Gao slowly. Stir until slightly gold. Then wait until it cools slightly, then cook in the chicken broth you just cooked.
Remember to use whole chicken to cook the broth. If you chop up the chicken to use as broth, it will get dirty and sifting the water to clear the broth loses essential fat and chicken taste.
Cook the rice and broth in the rice cooker, I vaguely remembers some recipe puting bay leaf along with it, but I'm not sure so put in at your discretion. Just safely cook the rice in chicken broth normally.

Well in this case traditional is not the right word to use since Hainanese chicken rice is Chinese in origin. Also the reason comes from the fact that Jolibee, Lotteria, KFC is dominating Vietnamese fast food right now. Heck even Burger King had a nice (but niche) run. McDonalds just can’t compete, not to mention the multiple knockoff chains and places that serve food similar to those from popular fast food chains.

Your pronunciation is great, very audible and recognisable even when you are speaking two languages simultaneously, and your learning strategy is absolutely correct, after all, that's how Vietnamese children learn too. I study German, English and dabble a little in a few other languages and I realised that English is quite one of very few languages that do not sound the way it is spelled according to the alphabet, I actually admire how children from English-speaking countries manage to learn every single word like that without an actual rule.

Vietnamese version of Com Ga Hai Nam is a bit different than the original dish invented from Hainan Chefs that immigrated to Singapore and altered the original Wenchang Chicken. Singaporean Hainan Chicken and Rice is more complex in favors (tho just still "boiled" chicken and rice) due to the boiling technique they use and the seasoning in the broth. It also usually comes with three different sauces, but Vietnamese tend to like to pair Ginger with poultry. Both variation tastes good and has its own charm that's represented of where it's cooked and eaten. In the US many Vietnamese restaurants that serves Goi Ga will also add a lot of thinly sliced lotus stems for the refreshing crunch factor, Doing it at home you can find Jars of the lotus stem at Vietnamese/Asian markets.

You hit the nail on the head there about the Vietnamese language; it's pronounced exactly as it's spelt. It's in stark contrast to the crazy spelling in English. I cursed a lot when I first learned English, wondering what kind of crazy language this was, that pronounced LIVE in 'I live' differently from in 'live match'. I reckon you can't really have spelling-bee contests for Vietnamese.
Just wondering, if the present civilization suddenly collapsed, in the future archaeologists would easily pronounce Vietnamese accurately when they stumbled upon it; English spelling, on the other hand, would confuse them greatly. 😂

How long have you been learning/studying viet? From your videos you know way more than me - someone who lives in the west who has been raised in a viet speaking only household. Keep up the great vids! 👍

Same thing happens to coffe. The reason why Starbuck is available in Viet Nam but still not as popular as it is in many Europe nations is that Việt Nam is already renowned for its creamy coffe. Have great fun there my man.

It's interesting how the chicken rice is named after Hai Nan province in China, but the dish is known to be Singapore cuisine. Even more interestingly, I have never seen it served in any Chinese restaurant overseas.
