As a Vietnamese, I absolutely love this episode; you guys did a great job featuring some of Vietnam's most famous street dishes. I also have some recommendations for you if you want to make a second part. I will go with my absolute favorite food I grew up eating: Bánh Tráng Trộn (Rice Paper Salad), Bánh Tráng Nướng (Vietnamese Rice Paper pizza), Bún Bò Huế (Hue's Beef Noddle Soup), Bún Chả (Grilled pork with cold rice noodle), and finally the hidden gem, my ultimate favorite: Bánh Tầm Bì (Thick Noodle with Creamy Coconut sauce).

Really? Why? I rather them do another korean themed food video. And then another one. And another one. Hopefully they don't hire any viet reactors to the korean cast of reactors.. That would be weird, no?

Vietnamese food is amazing. My sister’s husband is Vietnamese and he introduced my entire family to Vietnamese food. We don’t have many Asian options where I live and it’s a blessing that he cooks Vietnamese food. My favorite dish that makes are bun bo hue, banh beo, banh loc, and banh nem. He makes many other Vietnamese dishes (like lemongrass chicken or pork), but those 4 dishes are the ones I look forward to the most when he comes over and brings food for Football Sunday. Wished we had pho and banh mi restaurants around me to have those more often.

I always feel like foreigners are missing out when the bread used for bánh mì is closer to a traditional French baguette than the type of baguette we use here in VN. The texture and taste is quite different, its so much softer, airier and has a very thin but crunchy crust adding to the dish's overall texture. Bánh mì literally means bread so that's really a big change when you switch out the key ingredient man.

The fatty gelatinous piece in the pho was beef tendon, not tripe. The tripe is stringy white

  • @kiki246810

Some of the dishes such as the Bot Chien and Banh Mi is not accurately made, but it's nice to see the taste of culture being shared. Pho existed before the French colonization. Just that the pho then is closer to Hu Tieu which is Chinese influenced. Now the toppings have changed to contain more beef which was in demand during French colonization of Vietnam.

2:05 correction here, phở refers to the bánh phở (NOODLES), not the broth, so no it did not come from the word feu in French
A few other pointers: I think Ash is the one making the food? Not sure. But here’s my feedback on the food. The bánh xéo looks overcooked, it looks like it’s too crispy. The real bánh xéo would have crispy edges but the center would still be soft and bouncy. I don’t think you used lettuce for the wraps? It looks like it’s been cooked or blanched bc how soft it was. Bánh mì in Vietnam uses the Vietnamese short and soft baguette. I know some Vietnamese chains here use the “French style baguette” that’s way tougher and longer, but that doesn’t mean it’s authentic. Bột chiên, we use pickled papaya, not daikon. Lastly, the chè thái uses durian, jackfruit, and longan, not mango and lychee like you had here. I know some of the videos you watched are from people that don’t live directly in Vietnam so they might have created their own version using ingredient they can find here but I think it’s better to watch videos from the direct source and have deeper research done on the dishes. Regardless, thanks for all your effort for introducing Vietnamese dishes.

Phở and pot-au-feu are two totally different dishes and the words just coincidentally have some similarity in the pronunciation, especially when France is not the land of noodles. It is closer to Japanese and Chinese noodles, and those two countries even have greater influence on Vietnam than France.

It's a pleasure to see you enjoy Vietnamese food, as a Vietnamese. The dishes presented look very appealing, but I really hope you have the opportunity to taste them with traditional flavors, they will be many times more delicious. I don't mean to criticize, but the dishes presented were not prepared in the most correct way. For example, Banh Xeo was overcooked, Banh Mi seemed too soggy (banh mi will taste best when freshly baked, it will be fragrant and very crispy, not chewy like what you have enjoyed),... Anyway, it's a pleasure to see you enjoy those dishes. Wish you all happiness and success!

Being Vietnamese I voice my opinion. A big misunderstanding that Pho is from French word Feu meaning fire of a French dish Pot au Feu. It does not make much sense. Some Vietnamese Pho restaurant owners made up this to make the dish as some kind of haute cuisine. I believe Pho name is from Cantonese word Phanh meaning vermicelli. The technique to cook Pho is closed to Cantonese dish Hu Tiew.
Correction. Banh xeo is a Vietnamese southern dish.x

The word Phở had a good story to it as I learned. Like you mentioning it derived from "Fen" or "Phanh" aka "Flat Rice Noodle". During colonization, the French soldier were offer the hot noodle and heard the people said it make of Fen => this pronunciation bring closeness to the word "Feu" or fire in French and they keep calling it "Feu" => I think due to that the word Phở soon imprint onto the delicious hot soup from those historical event factors😂

As a French language learner from secondary school to the university, I believe the misinformation was spreaded by the students of French department since decades ago. During their studies they just found out that the pronunciations were similar, then with their lack of info and critical thinking, they believed it was something related to the France. The situation got worse when some of those students became lecturers, they spreaded that "wrong info" to younger students and even to the their French colleagues, then it is like it is now. Same thing happened to bánh mì with the "pain de mie", which concidentally have similar sounds, but are totally different dishes.

To be honest, I don't consider Pho to be street food. It works as main course.
Egg coffee need to be warm, if it run cold, the whole cup will get stinky smell.

I have eaten those snails from where I live (Malaysia) though I’ve never eaten them with coconut milk… But, I would eat like 20 of those snails. They taste so good! (Also, sucking them out is just something you’re used to when you eat them)
Got to taste Pho where I live and they taste really good! It’s one of the foods I end up eating a lot when my family wants to go out and eat together.

Love this episode, seeing my childhood favorites and what I grew up eating. If the nước mắm (fish sauce) is made really well, I would always eat it with pork chop, spring rolls, and bánh xèo. Y’all should try thịt kho, it’s really good. It’s like a caramelized braised pork belly or pork that is sometimes made with boiled eggs.
